While I watched mouth open in surprise, Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop (拖把). She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, “Very dirty floors.” “Yes, I’m glad they’ve finally decided to clean them,” the nurse answered. She looked at Mum strangely and said, “But aren’t you working late?” Mum just pushed harder, each swipe (拖一下) of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall. I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned back to writing in the big book. After a long time Mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She quickly put the mop back and took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, Mum bowed politely to the nurse and said, “Thank you.” Outside, Mum told me “Grandma is fine. No fever.” “You saw her, Mum?” “Of course. I told her about the hospital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. Dad will stop worrying as well. It’s a fine hospital. But such floors! A mop is not good. You need a brush.” 4. Which of the following words best describes Mum? ______. A. Clever B. Warm-hearted C. Strange D. Hardworking C Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the Internet — but in forms will be very different to what we accept and recognize as English today. That’s because people who speak English as a second language already outnumber native speakers. And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the Internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent (口音). Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “Englishes” including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they’re now expanding and coming online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not in the English dictionary. And most large companies have English websites, while smaller businesses are learning that they need a common language — English — to reach global customers. The increasing popularity of the Internet allows more languages to develop quickly. “Most people actually speak several languages — it’s less common to only speak one,” says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its place as the world's common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.” Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new. 8. What does the text mainly talk about? A. English is a common language around the world. B. There are now many different language styles. C. English is developing with the Internet. D. Smaller businesses are learning a common language. 9. Which of the following is true about online communication? A. People need to spell exactly. B. Grammar is not so important. C. People need to pay attention to their accent. D. Most English speakers are native speakers. 10. What can we infer from the text? A. We can only communicate online in English. B. It's impossible to find all the English words in the dictionary. C. Some technology companies start to publish English dictionaries. D. Smaller businesses are not allowed to have English websites. 11. What can we learn from what Mr. Munro says? A. The other languages are enriching English. B. One can’t live well without speaking several languages. C. English will become the only language in the world. D Chinese used to be the world's common language. D As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more. Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping (录像) the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.” The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.” 12. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to _________. A. show the relationship between parents and children B. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table C. report on the findings of a study D. give information about family problems 13. Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because _________. A. they are busy serving food to their children B. they are busy keeping order at the dinner table C. they have to pay more attention to younger children D. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family 14. By saying “Middle children are invisible” in paragraph 3, Lewis means that middle children _________. A. have to help their parents to serve dinner B. get the least attention from the family C. are often kept away from the dinner table D. find it hard to keep up with other children 15. Which of the following statements would the writer agree to? A. It is important to have the right food for children. B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner. C. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently. D. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner. High school is a magical time when students can learn and grow. ____16____ Many students are feeling more pressure than ever before when it comes to performing well at school. Strange D. Hardworking 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. 根据文章结尾母子的对话“Outside, Mum told me ‘Grandma is fine. No fever.’ (在外面,妈妈告诉我:“奶奶很好。没有发烧。”)” 和 “Of course. I told her about the hospital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. (当然。我告诉了她医院的规定,她明天之前不会等我们来。)”可知,妈妈的核心目的是去看望住院的奶奶(一位病人)。故选C。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, “Very dirty floors.” “Yes, I’m glad they’ve finally decided to clean them,” the nurse answered. (她把拖把推过桌子,当护士抬头看时,妈妈点点头说:“地板很脏。”“是的,我很高兴他们终于决定清理它们了,”护士回答。)”可推断,护士把妈妈当成了清洁工,故选D。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章结尾母子的对话“Of course. I told her about the hospital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. (当然。我告诉了她医院的规定,她明天之前不会等我们来。)”所以可以推理出医院制度很严格。故选B。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文可知,探视病人的时间已经过去,值班护士不再接待病人家属,也不会再让任何探视者入内 ,妈妈大概知道医院规定严,无法通融,才会想出冒充清洁工入内这一主意,所以推断妈妈是聪明的,故选A。 C Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. D. Chinese used to be the world's common language. C 9. B 10. B 11. 根据第一段“Online, English has become a common language for users from around the world. In the process, the language itself is changing. There are now thought to be some 4.5 billion web pages worldwide. Some language experts predict that within 10 years English will occupy the Internet—but in forms will be very different to what we accept and recognize as English today.(在网上,英语已经成为世界各地用户的通用语言。在这个过程中,语言本身也在发生变化。现在全世界大约有45亿个网页。一些语言专家预测,10年内英语将占领互联网——但形式将与我们今天所接受和认可的英语大不相同)”可知,在网上,英语成为世界范围内用户的普遍语言。在这个过程中,语言自己也在改变。由此可以推断出文章谈论的是英语随着网络的发展。故选C项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“And increasingly, they use it to communicate with other non-native speakers, particularly on the Internet where less attention is paid to grammar and spelling and users don’t have to worry about their accent (口音).(而且,他们越来越多地用英语与其他非母语人士交流,尤其是在互联网上,人们对语法和拼写的关注较少,用户也不必担心自己的口音)”可知,网上交流,语法不是那么重要。 根据第三段“Users of Facebook already socialize in a number of different “Englishes” including Indian English, Spanish English and Korean English. While these different styles have long existed within their cultures, they’re now expanding and coming online. Technology companies are introducing newly-developed English words with products aimed at enabling users to add words that are not in the English dictionary.(Facebook的用户已经可以使用多种不同的“英语”进行社交,包括印度英语、西班牙英语和韩国英语。虽然这些不同的风格长期存在于他们的文化中,但它们现在正在扩展并出现在网上。科技公司正在推出新开发的英语单词和产品,目的是让用户可以添加英语词典中没有的单词)”可知,要在字典里找到所有的英语单词是不可能的。故选B项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段““Most people actually speak several languages--it’s less common to only speak one,” says Mr. Munro. “English has taken its place as the world's common language, but it’s not pushing out other languages.” Instead, other languages are pushing their way into English, and in the process creating something new.(Munro说:“大多数人实际上会说几种语言,只会说一种语言的情况比较少见。”“英语已经成为世界通用语言,但它并没有排挤其他语言。”相反,其他语言正在挤入英语,并在这个过程中创造出新的东西)”可知,Munro认为其他语言正在挤入英语,并在这个过程中创造出新的东西,所以是其他语言丰富了英语。故选A项。 D As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. A. show the relationship between parents and children B teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table C. report on the findings of a study D. give information about family problems 13. C 13. B 14. B 15.
