Have you read The Magic School Bus series? For years, these books have transported children to strange and unusual places, from the outer reaches of our solar system to the bottom of the ocean, and even inside the human body! Sadly, Joanna Cole, author of the renowned The Magic School Bus series, passed away on July 12, 2020, at age 75. Cole is remembered for inspiring a love of science and literature in young children through her books.
Joanna Cole was born on August 11, 1944. As a young child, Cole had a passion for science and writing and loved reading science books and studying plants and insects in her backyard. It was a strange hobby, but she didn’t mind standing out. In fact, she decided to pursue this interest into a career. After graduating from university, Cole worked as a librarian, elementary school teacher, and editor, but didn’t particularly enjoy any of these jobs.
Cole believed that elementary school was an important stage in a child’s life and intended to contribute to children’s education. She wrote her first book on a topic that had never been written about before: cockroaches (蟑螂)! Soon after, she met Bruce Degen, who also had an interest in science, and the two decided to cooperate on The Magic School Bus series. The first book was published in 1986, and twelve others have been published since the original series. This series, which follows the adventures of Ms Frizzle and her students, received overwhelming support and fulfilled Cole’s lifelong dream. The Magic School Bus books have shaped the childhoods of many young adults by teaching them science in a way that hadn’t been done before. The books were made into an animated (动画的) show that was aired from 1994 to 1997 and in 2017, Netflix created an addition to the original animated show titled The Magic School Bus Rides Again.
Cole’s writing weaves (编织) humour, science, and literature skills that writers of children’s books admire to this day. Though Cole is not with us anymore, she has left something worthwhile and her books will continue to inspire children for decades to come!
41. Which of the following can best describe Cole’s former jobs?
A. Productive. B. Unattractive. C. Diverse. D. Respectable.

A. They were finished by Cole alone.
B. Their animated show had a follow-up.
C. Their stories are based on Ms Frizzle’s own experiences.
D. They were made into animations once published.
44. What can we infer about Joanna Cole from her experience of writing The Magic School Bus series?
A. She was not good at working with other people.
B. She successfully combined her interest in science with writing.
C. She only cared about making money from her books.
D. She gave up her dream of writing after publishing the series.
45. What is the text mainly about?
A. A series of books and the author. B. A woman writer and her experiences.
C. A female biologist and her dreams. D. A set of books and its influences.
C
It’s natural for parents to praise their children, but offering this praise could actually backfire, according to new science.
In the study, researchers at Michigan State University looked at 123 children who were about 7. The team assessed the children to determine whether they had a “growth mindset” (believing that you can work harder to get smarter), or a “fixed mindset” (believing that your intelligence is unable to change). They then asked the children to complete a fast-paced computer accuracy task while their brain activity was recorded.
Based on the data they collected, the researchers concluded that children with a growth mindset were much more likely to have a larger brain response after making a mistake, and in turn were more likely to improve their performance by paying closer attention to the task after making an error.
While previous research has shown that people with a fixed mindset didn’t want to admit they had made a mistake, this study found that children with a fixed mindset were able to—“bounce back” after making an error, but only if they gave their full attention to the mistakes. “The main implication here is that we should pay close attention to our mistakes and use them as opportunities to learn study,” author Hans Schroder told Science Daily.
For parents, the lessons are clear — if a child hands you an A+ test, don’t say “You’re so smart!”
Instead, say “Wow, that studying really paid off!” or “You clearly mastered this material — way to go!” Note the effort, not the intelligence.
Second, focus on using errors to work together and learn. Many teachers and parents avoid addressing children’s mistakes, telling them “It’s OK. You’ll get it next time...” without giving them the opportunity to figure out what went wrong. Dr Schroder says, “Instead, it’s better to assure children that mistakes happen, and to pay attention and work to figure out where and how they made the mistakes.”
46. The underlined word “backfire” in paragraph 1 probably means “______”
A. make a loud noise B. leave a good impression
C. have an opposite result D. produce an explosion
47. According to the text, which one belongs to the group who has a “growth mindset”?
A. Tom manages to correct every mistake by heart.
B. Mary believes her mistakes are made by chance.
C. John keeps an idea that he has a good gift for studying.
D. Lily thinks she can get A⁺ without any effort.
48. If your child gets the best mark in the test, you should ______.
A. praise him with some delicious food and money
B. praise him for being cleverer than other students
C. confirm his effort that he has made for the test
D. believe that he is an honest and smart child
49. What should parents do with the child’s mistakes from Dr Schroder?
A. Parents should avoid talking with the child about his mistakes.
B. Parents should compare his mistakes with others’ and criticize him.
C. Parents should ignore the mistakes and believe he will do better.
D. Parents should analyse the mistakes with their child patiently.
50. What is the best title for this passage?
A. How to Help Children Get Better Grades in Tests
B. The Differences Between Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset
C. Why Praising Children’s Intelligence May Not Be Good
D. How to Teach Children to Avoid Making Mistakes
D
Gardeners such as Prince Charles who claim that talking to plants encourages them to grow have long been seen as a little silly. But scientists have discovered evidence which suggests the Royal may actually be right and they could be listening to him. Biologists at Tel Aviv University in Israel have found that flowers can act as a plant’s “ears” to help them detect the sound of approaching insects.
When the researchers played recordings of flying bees to evening primrose flowers, within three minutes the sugar concentrations in the nectar of its flowers increased. The fluid, produced to attract pollinating (授粉) insects, was on average 20 percent higher in flowers exposed to the buzz compared to those left in silence or exposed to higher pitched sounds. Professor Lilach Hadany, who led the study, said: “Our results document for the first time that plants can rapidly respond to pollinator sounds in an ecologically relevant way.”
However, Prof Hadany said a plant’s ability to respond to pollinators may be weakened in city environments or beside a busy road. While plants require water, sunlight and the right temperature to grow, it is widely believed they do not have senses in the way animals do.
But the study, published on the open-science website BioRxiv, suggests the efforts of gardeners who talk to their plants may not be in vain. “Plants’ ability to hear has implications well beyond pollination — plants could potentially hear and respond to herbivores, other animals, the elements, and possibly other plants,” Prof Hadany added.
A month-long experiment conducted by the Royal Horticultural Society in 2009 found female voices appear to speed up the growth of tomatoes. The research offers a possible explanation — women’s voices were at the right frequency for the plants to hear.
51. What’s evening primrose flowers response to bees’ buzz?
A. Longer bloom. B. Sweeter nectar. C. Brighter color. D. Less fluid.
52. Where can plants grow better according to Hadany?
A. On a square. B. Beside a highway. C. In the woods. D. Along the street.
53. What can we infer from the research?
A. Prince Charles proves kind of stupid.
B. Plants can only potentially hear animals.
C. Plants respond to sounds slowly and ecologically.
D. Plants gardeners talk to frequently develop well.
54. What is the author’s attitude towards the idea that talking to plants helps them grow?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Neutral. D. Critical.
55. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. Flowers can hear. B. Bees are best pollinators.
C. Plants can’t grow without sound. D. Environment improves plants’ growth.

My father always told me: “All work is noble.” He wasn’t wealthy, but he earned a reasonable living. Thanks to his effort, I was able to go to an art college. I, however, wanted to do something different, something more interesting — I was special!
After graduation, I moved to New York in search of a graphic designer job. It was winter and I only brought money to support myself for about a month. I wasn’t worried — I was sure I’d find a fantastic job immediately.
Within a few weeks, though, I found myself wandering around the streets having been rejected by every design office in town. My hostel rent was almost gone and I hadn’t eaten for days. “How had I reached this point?” I wondered as I trembled in my thin jacket.
I was just about to give up when my dad called. He suggested I get a job in a restaurant until something else came along. At first, pride made me hesitate but I was cold, hungry, and unwilling to go home feeling ashamed and defeated.
I entered a café near one of the design offices that had turned me away and asked the manager if they were hiring. She said they were shorthanded, and offered me a job right away. Surprisingly, I found that I really enjoyed serving people. I started making big tips right away. Later, the manager learned that I had a design background and asked me to design the café menus. That led to a part-time job at an advertising company.
Previously, I had never considered being a waiter, but there I was. I eventually got my dream design job, but that winter I learned not to make assumptions(假定、设想) about work.
56. Why did the author go to New York after graduation? (No more than 10 words)
57. What does the underlined word “trembled” mean? (No more than 3 words)

44. What can we infer about Joanna Cole from her experience of writing The Magic School Bus series?

C have an opposite result D. produce an explosion
C 47. A 48. C 49. D 50. C
根据第一段“It’s natural for parents to praise their children, but offering this praise could actually backfire, according to new science.(父母表扬孩子是很自然的事,但根据新的科学研究,这种表扬实际上可能会backfire)”,结合but表转折的逻辑,可推测backfire意为“产生相反的结果”。
根据第二段对“growth mindset(成长型思维)”的定义“The team assessed the children to determine whether they had a ‘growth mindset’ (believing that you can work harder to get smarter), or a ‘fixed mindset’ (believing that your intelligence is unable to change).(研究团队对这些孩子进行了评估,以确定他们是否具有“成长型思维”(认为你可以通过更努力来变得更聪明),还是“固定型思维”(认为你的智力无法改变))”及第三段“Based on the data they collected, the researchers concluded that children with a growth mindset were much more likely to have a larger brain response after making a mistake, and in turn were more likely to improve their performance by paying closer attention to the task after making an error.(根据收集到的数据,研究人员得出结论:成长型思维的孩子在犯错后,大脑反应更强烈,反过来,他们更有可能通过在犯错后更专注于任务来提高表现)”可知,成长型思维的孩子会积极应对错误以提升自己。 故选A。
根据第五段和第六段“For parents, the lessons are clear — if a child hands you an A+ test, don’t say “You’re so smart!” Instead, say “Wow, that studying really paid off!” or “You clearly mastered this material — way to go!” Note the effort, not the intelligence.(对父母来说,教训很清楚——如果孩子给你A+的考试成绩,不要说“你真聪明!”相反,你应该说:“哇,学习真的很有回报!”或者“你显然掌握了这些材料——干得好!”注意努力,而不是智力)”可知,孩子考了好成绩时,父母应认可其为考试付出的努力。故选C。
【49题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Dr Schroder says, ‘Instead, it’s better to assure children that mistakes happen, and to pay attention and work to figure out where and how they made the mistakes.’(施罗德博士说:“相反,最好向孩子保证错误是会发生的,并且要关注错误,努力弄清楚他们在哪里、如何犯了这些错误”。)”

根据第二段中“When the researchers played recordings of flying bees to evening primrose flowers, within three minutes the sugar concentrations in the nectar of its flowers increased. The fluid, produced to attract pollinating (授粉) insects, was on average 20 percent higher in flowers exposed to the buzz compared to those left in silence or exposed to higher pitched sounds.(当研究人员播放蜜蜂飞行的录音给月见草花时,三分钟内,这些花朵所分泌花蜜中的糖分浓度有所上升。花蜜这种分泌物的作用是吸引传粉昆虫,与处于安静环境或接触高音调声音的花朵相比,接触蜜蜂嗡嗡声的花朵,其花蜜浓度平均高出20%)”可知,听到蜜蜂声音后,月见草花蜜中的糖浓度上升,即花蜜更甜。故选B。
【52题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“However, Prof Hadany said a plant’s ability to respond to pollinators may be weakened in city environments or beside a busy road. (然而,哈达尼(Hadany)教授表示,植物对传粉者的反应能力在城市环境中或靠近繁忙道路的地方可能会减弱)”可知,城市环境或繁忙道路旁会削弱植物对传粉者声音的反应能力,由此可推知,安静的自然环境(如树林)更利于植物生长。故选C。
【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“But the study, published on the open-science website BioRxiv, suggests the efforts of gardeners who talk to their plants may not be in vain. “Plants’ ability to hear has implications well beyond pollination — plants could potentially hear and respond to herbivores, other animals, the elements, and possibly other plants,” Prof Hadany added.(但这项发表在开放科学网站BioRxiv上的研究表明,园丁们与植物对话的努力或许并没有白费。哈达尼(Hadany)教授补充道:“植物的听觉能力所涉及的意义远不止传粉——植物或许能够听到食草动物、其他动物、自然元素的声音,甚至可能听到其他植物的声音,并对此做出反应。”)”以及最后一段中“A month-long experiment conducted by the Royal Horticultural Society in 2009 found female voices appear to speed up the growth of tomatoes. The research offers a possible explanation — women’s voices were at the right frequency for the plants to hear.(2009年,英国皇家园艺学会进行了一项为期一个月的实验,结果发现女性的声音似乎能加快番茄的生长速度。这项研究提供了一个可能的解释——女性的声音具有适合植物听闻的频率)”可知,园丁们与植物对话有利于植物生长,园丁和植物交谈,植物可能长得更好。故选D。
【54题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“When the researchers played recordings of flying bees to evening primrose flowers, within three minutes the sugar concentrations in the nectar of its flowers increased.(当研究人员播放蜜蜂飞行的录音给月见草花时,三分钟内,这些花朵所分泌花蜜中的糖分浓度有所上升)”、第四段中“But the study, published on the open-science website BioRxiv, suggests the efforts of gardeners who talk to their plants may not be in vain.(但这项发表在开放科学网站BioRxiv上的研究表明,园丁们与植物对话的努力或许并没有白费)”以及最后一段中“A month-long experiment conducted by the Royal Horticultural Society in 2009 found female voices appear to speed up the growth of tomatoes.(2009年,英国皇家园艺学会进行了一项为期一个月的实验,结果发现女性的声音似乎能加快番茄的生长速度)”可知,作者通过引用蜜蜂声音提高花蜜甜度、女性声音加快番茄生长速度等科学实验结果来证明植物能感知声音并促进生长,且指出园丁的努力可能不是徒劳,由此可推知,作者对与植物交谈有助于它们生长的观点持赞成态度。
通读全文,尤其根据第一段中“But scientists have discovered evidence which suggests the Royal may actually be right and they could be listening to him. Biologists at Tel Aviv University in Israel have found that flowers can act as a plant’s “ears” to help them detect the sound of approaching insects.(但科学家们发现了一些证据,表明这位王室成员或许真的说得对,而且他们可能真的是在听他的建议。以色列特拉维夫大学的生物学家们发现,花朵可以充当植物的“耳朵”,帮助它们探测到即将飞来的昆虫的声音)”可知,全文核心围绕植物能感知声音展开,讲述了科学家通过研究发现植物能对声音(如传粉者声音)做出反应,证明园丁与植物对话的努力可能并非徒劳,同时提及环境对植物听觉能力的影响及过往相关实验;A选项“Flowers can hear.(花儿能听见)”能够概括文章主旨。故选A。
