Passage 1
Seeing terror films is typically a harmless activity. But the fear it generates can cause the body’s fight-or-flight system-releasing chemicals into the body and causing a number of physiological responses.
Our body’s fear response is actually a fantastic tool for survival in dangerous situations because it kicks in fast, makes us full of energy, heightens our focus, strengthens our muscles, and gets us ready to handle whatever is coming at us. It’s a built-in survival mechanism, which has been with us since our ancient ancestors. But even as it helped our ancient ancestors escape from tigers and keeps us out of harm today, activating the body’s fear response isn’t always a good thing. If it’s initiated too often with constant stress or frequent jump scares, it can wear our bodies down.
The body’s fear response, or fight-or-flight response, always begins in the amygdala — a part of the brain’s system that’s critical for recognizing threats and processing emotions. After it detects a threat, the amygdala sends a distress signal to a command center in the brain, which tells the nervous system to release hormones and neurotransmitters (荷尔蒙和神经递质). Research shows that these hormones and neurotransmitters work together to quicken your breathing and to make your heart send oxygen-rich blood faster to your muscles and vital organs. This prepares the muscles and brain to rapidly set up a threat response.
Indeed, when stress hormones are released too often or for long periods of time, it can wear your body down. In some people, it can lead to health issues like high blood pressure, heart problems and digestive issues, because your body is constantly in “high alarm mode”.
Another consideration is that our immediate biological response to fear is the same whether we’re facing true danger — or something that only appears that way. Overexposure to jump scares can make you less sensitive to fear. So people who enjoy terror films regularly might not react as strongly to real danger because their brain gets used to these situations.

Passage 2
When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms. Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free. A study estimated that every year, 26,735 people went to the emergency room for adverse (不利的) events related to OTC cold and cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together, their interactions can sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects. Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses (剂量重复). Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients. A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience adverse effects from cold and flu medicines, some groups — including older adults, children and pregnant women — may be at greater risk. Older people who are using prescribed drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-to-drug interactions with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicines to children under age 4. Because of a variety of factors, young children have a higher risk of an accidental overdose and adverse events that could lead to death.

Passage 3
Chinese material scientists have found the soil on the moon may potentially be able to generate oxygen and fuel, a finding that means more possibilities of humans to use lunar resources to further exploration of the moon and beyond.
The researchers at Nanjing University showed that the lunar sample brought back by China’s Chang’e-5 contains active compounds (化合物) that can change carbon dioxide into oxygen and fuel. Initially, they hoped to design a system that took advantage of lunar soil and solar radiation, the two rich resources on the moon, according to a study published on Thursday in the journal Joule.
After analyzing the Chang’e-5’s lunar soil, the team found the sample contained metal- rich substances, which could work as a catalyst (催化剂) to make oxygen using sunlight and carbon dioxide. The team proposed a strategy using lunar soil to electrolyze water from the moon and the astronauts’ life support system into oxygen and hydrogen. The process was powered by sunlight. The carbon dioxide breathed out by moon inhabitants can be collected and combined with hydrogen to produce the fuel, also catalyzed by the lunar soil, according to the study. The researchers said with this method, no external energy apart from sunlight would be used to produce oxygen and fuel to support life on a moon base.
“We use the environmental resources to minimize rocket payload, and our strategy provides a scenario for a sustainable and affordable living environment for life out of the Earth,” said the paper’s first author Yao Yingfang from Nanjing University, expressing his assumption.
“The challenge lies in the fact that catalytic efficiency of lunar soil is lower than catalysts on the Earth,” said the researchers. They are testing different approaches in order to improve the design. The team is looking for an opportunity to test the system in space with China’s future manned lunar missions.
9.What is the main implication of Chinese scientists’ discovery of the moon’s soil?

B.The analysis of China’s Chang’e-5’s work.
C.The supportive method producing metal-rich substances.
D.The sustainable living strategy employing lunar resources.
11.What does the underlined word “scenario” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Contract. B.Profession. C.Possibility. D.Sponsor.
12.What is the text mainly about?
A.The discovery of active compounds on the moon.
B.The testing approaches to improving the lunar soil.
C.The research on the environmental system of the moon.

Passage 4
Recently, I accidentally found a set of Hanfu l only wore once from the bottom of the cupboard. I remember buying them simply to match the ancient-style hair accessories (配饰) a friend gave me. It occurred to me that 1 had been trapped in the “birdcage effect”.
“Birdcage effect” means that when you get an item one day, you will prepare more things to match it. Weeks ago, I was in the company of friends engaged in shopping. One said that she wanted to buy a good writing pen to match the delicate notebook that her sister gave her, so that she would fall in love with taking notes on reading, and thus love reading, not just reading. I joked that she must have fallen for the “birdcage effect”. But the friend said with a smile: “Why not use the ‘birdcage effect’ instead?”
For the first time, I heard that the “birdcage effect” can be used in reverse (逆向). However, this can’t help but remind me of middle school, and I seem to have used the “birdcage effect”. Passing by a bookstore one day, I purchased a magazine and saw the call for contributions published in the magazine, so I started writing with eager hands, and then I fell in love with writing.
After shopping with my friends that time, I began to proceed to use the “birdcage effect”. I bought a small fresh tablecloth to decorate my desk, and a beautiful notebook to record my inspiration. When everything was ready, I started writing again.
But how can we get rid of the “birdcage effect” in many things, and even use the “birdcage effect” in the opposite way? Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can distinguish them. If it is not in line with the actual situation, it is a “negative birdcage”, then we must learn to stop losses in time and maintain a heart of abandonment and separation. If it is a “positive birdcage” that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and motivate ourselves to move towards our goals. At this time, you will find that the “birdcage effect” is actually not so terrible!
13.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The application of the “birdcage effect” in life.
B.The necessity of using the “birdcage effect” in life.
C.The turning point of the author’s idea on the “birdcage effect”.
D.The author’s conflict with her friend over the “birdcage effect”.
14.What is the author’s purpose in mentioning her middle school experience?
A.To recall her delightful days at school.
B.To explain the reason for her love with writing.
C.To confirm the positive of the “birdcage effect”.
D.To prove her knowledge of the “birdcage effect”.
15.How can we make use of the “birdcage effect” positively?
A.By realizing this effect has two sides.
B.By promoting our personal consumption.
C.By recognizing this effect is not so terrible.
D.By guiding our acts to go with reasonable goals.
16.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Getting Rid of the Birdcage Effect Confidently
B.Motivating Ourselves to Move Towards Our Goals
C.The Birdcage Effect: Influence on Consumer Behavior
D.The Birdcage Effect: How to Use It to Your Advantage

Passage 1
Imagine hopping on a school bus and being transported to an immersive (沉浸式的) educational tour of the inside of the human body — and no, not on a fictional episode of The Magic School Bus. This is the kind of experience that Meta hopes to enable for students, digitally, through its Quest virtual reality (VR) headsets.
Bring VR into more classrooms could enable new kinds of learning opportunities. For example, it may allow drama students to feel like they’re having an immersive, real-time experience watching Shakespeare’s work performed at the Globe Theatre in the 17 century. New Mexico University is using the headsets to teach criminal justice students to investigate virtual crime scenes, and Morehouse College has developed a “digital twin campus” to teach students a range of subjects through VR, both through a partner program with Meta to test educational applications of the technology.
But VR also creates concerns about digital safety and the potential harm to humans who are having more digital interactions and fewer in-person ones. Moreover, the cost of involving VR headsets in the classroom could be an obstacle to adoption for the many schools already struggling with limited resources. While cheaper than some other headsets on the market, Meta’s Quest 3 devices still start at $499 each. Most importantly, it remains unclear just how useful virtual reality is in helping students learn better.
“I think that VR is one area where additional research is necessary,” said Vincent Quan, an education researcher and co-executive director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab. “With technology, sure, it can have a lot of promise, but at the same time, there can also be a lot of hype (夸张的宣传), and I think it’s important to carefully evaluate these types of technologies. Sometimes you don’t know if it’s just innovative and cool versus actually impactful.”
1.Why is The Magic School Bus mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic of VR. B.To promote immersive education.
C.To recommend a popular TV series D.To advertise a new means of transport.
2.How can VR benefit students according to Paragraph 2?
A.By increasing their in-person interactions. B.By satisfying diverse learning requirements.
C.By assisting them in understanding concepts. D.By enabling learning beyond time limitations.
3.What can be inferred from the price of VR devices?
A.The price will affect that of similar products in the market.
B.The price is quite acceptable to both teachers and students.
C.VR devices are more cost-effective than other learning tools.
D.The price can be a heavy burden for financially troubled school.
4.What does Vincent Quan suggest about VR in education?
A.Technology will make it useful and cheap. B.Teachers can depend on it in the classroom.
C.It can benefit all students around the world. D.More research is needed to evaluate its impact
Passage 2
In recent times, with the advent (到来) of electric cars, the idea to fuel them with solar energy also gained momentum (动力). Electric cars—even though they run on electricity and don’t use fossil fuels — are still NOT GREEN! People suffer from the misconception that not using fossil fuel means “green” which is kind of absurd, considering the electricity we use is generated by burning the very same fuels!
However, what if your car had solar panels that could charge it? Now that would indeed be a green machine! Basically, while we would like to incorporate (吸入) this energy source into our car, the efficiency of the currently used solar panels is subject to the fulfillment of different criteria.
Firstly, solar panels occupy a large amount of area. An average car has an area of 10-25 sq. ft on the roof, which can generate between 50-150 W under ideal conditions. This is hardly enough power to light a bulb! Also, moderate sunny temperature needs to be ideal, as extremely high temperatures can reduce the efficiency of the solar panels. Cars must work in all weather conditions, so if a solar panel limits the car’s functionality, it becomes practically useless. More importantly, the cost of the panels and development required to power the electronics using the sun’s energy outweighs the benefits that solar panels provide.
Most cars today that have solar roofs, use the solar energy to power only a few basic functions of the car. While there is still time before we will be able to drive cars fully powered by solar energy, there are some alteratives, such as solar power stations, which are being designed to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for electricity.
Solar-powered vehicle are surely the future, but not the near future. As the cost of solar panels continue to fall and their efficiency increase, things will begin to look much “brighter” for this alternative and sustainable option!

A.What do solar cars book like? B.Why don’t we power the car with solar energy?
C.How do solar cars work? D.Could solar cars replace the electric cars?
Passage 3
According to the Solar Energy Industry Association, the number of solar panels installed(安装)has grown rapidly in the past decade, and it has to grow even faster to meet climate goals. But all of that growth will take up a lot of space, and though more and more people accept the concept of solar energy, few like large solar panels to be installed near them.
Solar developers want to put up panels as quickly and cheaply as possible, so they haven’t given much thought to what they put under them. Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.
“Solar projects need to be good neighbors,” says Jordan Macknick, the head of the Innovative Site Preparation and Impact Reductions on the Environment(InSPIRE)project. “They need to be protectors of the land and contribute to the agricultural economy.” InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to “low-impact” solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land. One of the easiest low-impact solar strategies is providing habitat for pollinators(传粉昆虫).
Habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change have caused dramatic declines in pollinator populations over the past couple of decades, which has damaged the U.S. agricultural economy. Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use. Conservation organizations put out pollinator-friendliness guidelines for home gardens, businesses, schools, cities—and now there are guidelines for solar farms.
Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction. “These pollinator-friendly solar farms can have a valuable impact on everything that’s going on in the landscape,” says Macknick.
9.What do solar developers often ignore?
A.The decline in the demand for solar energy.

A.Pollinators: To Leave or to Stay B.Solar Energy: Hope for the Future
C.InSPIRE: A Leader in Agriculture D.Solar Farms: A New Development
Passage 4
How can you find out what is going on inside a person’s body without opening the patient s body up? Regular X-rays can show a lot. CAT scans can show even more. They can give a complete view of body organs.
What is a CAT scan? CAT stands for a kind of machine. It is a special X-ray machine that gets a 360-degree picture of a small area of a patient’s body.
Doctors use X-rays to study and determine diseases and injuries within the body. X-rays can find a foreign object inside the body or take pictures of some inside organs to be X-rayed.
A CAT scanner, however, uses a group of X-rays to give a cross-sectional (横截面) view of a specific part of the body. A fine group of X-rays is scanned across the body and around the patient from many different directions. A computer studies the information from each direction and produces a clear cross-sectional picture on a screen. This picture is then photo-graphed for later use. Several cross sections, taken one after another, can give clear “photos” of the entire body or of any body organs. The latest CAT scanners can even give clear pictures of active, moving organs, just as a fast-action camera can “stop the action”, giving clear pictures of what appears unclear to the eye. And because of the 360-degree pictures, CAT scans show clear and complete views of organs in a manner that was once only shown during operation or examination of a dead patient.
Frequent appearance before X-rays can cause skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body. Yet CAT scans actually don’t cause the patient to more radiation than regular X-rays do. CAT scans can also be done without getting something harmful into the patient, so they are less risky than regular X-rays.
CAT scans provide exact, detailed information. They can quickly find such a thing as bleeding inside the brain. They are helping to save lives.
13.The underlined words “a foreign object” in Paragraph 3 most probably refer to .
A.a badly injured part inside the body
B.a new thing that is unknown to the doctor
C.a strange cell that has grown in the body
D.a thing that gets inside the body by chance
14.What is the special use of the latest CAT scanners?
A.It can take pictures of inside organs.
B.It provides clear photos of moving organs.
C.It won’t cause serious skin bums, cancer or other damage to the body.
D.It helps to find out illness inside a person’s body without opening it up.
15.What can we infer from this text?
A.Patients in front of CAT may suffer a bit of radiation,
B.Doctors need no opening-up of the body with CAT scanners.
C.CAT scanners are more expensive than regular X-ray machines.
D.CAT scanners can take photos of either the whole body or a part of it.
16.What can be the best title of this text?
A.The newest medical invention.
B.A special X-ray machine to save lives.
C.How to avoid the damage from X-rays.
D.Advantages and disadvantages of CAT scanners.

Favored by many internet influencers, the city of Zibo, once a sleepy industrial city, has gone viral on Chinese social media platforms. The topic Zibo “barbecue” on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, was played 4.96 billion times since the city stormed the Internet for over a month. On 29 April, Zibo Railway Station saw a record 87,000 train trips to and from the station, according to Chinese news website Caixin.
Local authorities in Zibo have been quick to respond to the sudden flow of visitors. A barbecue zone that can accommodate 10,000 people, featuring live band performances, was built overnight. Volunteers have been dispatched to the railway station to offer advice and recommendations to tourists. Designated (指定的) buses and trains bring tourists to and from the hottest barbecue spots. The government has even threatened to punish profiteering hotels who raise prices by more than 50% .
What makes Zibo barbecue so special is that it does offer a distinctive (独特的) dining experience. The skewers (烤串) are 70-80 percent cooked before they are brought to the table, where diners can finish cooking them on their own stoves, offering an immersive dining experience.
Zibo’s low prices are also appealing. Many college students in Shandong have made concrete plans to enjoy Zibo barbecue at the least cost, and traveling back and forth by train for only 200 yuan ($29.1). So what better way to attract adventurous, hungry college students with a tight budget other than “tasty barbecue that makes you full for only 50 yuan!”

Passage 1
Sirine Jahangir has been singing, writing and performing music since she was a little girl. She lost all her vision in one eye by the time she turned 5, so now the teen uses her gift “as a way to —not escape, but to help me through.” Not only did her passion get her through some difficult times, but when she was 14 it also brought her to the “Britain’s Got Talent” stage, where she impressed everyone with her performance.
Sirine has a rare condition that left her completely blind by the time she was 10 years old. While her parents and doctors have tried to find treatments for her, there isn’t much they can do. So her parents focused on helping her adjust to her new life, which was when her dad said she was first introduced to music. “I remember one day, we were driving in the car. This is about when she was getting to the stage where she couldn’t look out the window anymore to see things, and I didn’t know what to do. I just put the music on really loud. She started singing in the car, and she was so happy. And then she just found happiness every time I put it on,” her father said.
It didn’t take long for them to realize Sirine has tremendous talent. When she appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent”, she told everyone just how much her passion means to her. “I guess music is my vision,” she said. “That’s just what I live by, and music is my thing.” Then she headed over to the piano, where she played the piano and sang beautifully enough to bring the audience to tears! Unsurprisingly to everyone but Sirine, all four judges voted her into the next round of the competition!

Passage 2
Halloran has loved mountains since she was five or six, when her mother took her to Ireland during the summer holidays. They lived overlooking Annascaul lake on the Dingle peninsula. “It’s a lovely viewpoint. I used to sit there as a child. I loved the freedom of going up the mountain alone, when I was nine or ten. I cried for days before going back to London because I felt I would be in a rabbit hutch (窝).”
For Halloran, life had settled into a comfortable rhythm. But then her four-year-old son died in a car accident; six years later, her husband also passed away. After the loss, she became a workaholic. She went into the office at 5 am, and worked until 10 pm, which was her stability. And it was time to make a change.
One day last September, Ann Halloran made her way to her nearest bus stop in Hove, East Sussex. She had done plenty of travelling but, at 65, was setting off alone on her first backpacking adventure. Somewhere between her first stop in Turkey and her final destination—a yoga retreat (静修) in Mazunte, Mexico—she found a new perspective.
In Nepal, climbing the 5,400 m Gokyo Ri in the Himalayas, Halloran broke her walking stick. She has osteoporosis (骨质疏松症), which makes bones more likely to break, so the stick was essential in the mountains. Losing it was a blow, but she found reserves of inner strength.
Now, she says: “Whenever I get scared, I think of myself on top of that mountain, looking out over Lake Gokyo—and beyond that, Everest. I say, if you can do that, you can do anything.”
Since the backpacking adventure, she understands more fully the role that work played in her life for so long. “Work was reliable. I knew what I was doing. I’m a workaholic to this day,” she says. “I’ve just realised on this yoga retreat that I have to let go of all that. The penny is dropping for me now.”

Passage 3
I was cutting up lettuce (生菜) in the kitchen when I suddenly remembered watching a video about putting the lettuce stub (残余部分) in water to grow a whole new vegetable. So I took out a wide-mouthed mug (大杯) and placed the stub into it, gave it a little water, and placed it by the window.
On a snowy morning, I noticed the first sign. A first small leaf from its heart spread out. A tiny green flag of hope. Beaten, but not defeated. Within days, it was impossible to see the cuts where I had removed the leaves. The growth was explosive. And when I lifted the blossoming head out of the mug, tiny root threads fell down, seeking for the earth. What is growing here? Lettuce or hope?
If I were a lettuce in a similar condition, I’d want to doubtfully assess where I found myself before being devoted to full growth. Yet for this lettuce, my inadequate offering of water and a place by a window was enough for it to decide to reclaim itself again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name. I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in, or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.

Passage 4
Crowded by defenders, Charlie Villanueva leaps toward the basket. One hand lifts the ball high, and for a moment he seems to hang in the air. Then he hammers the ball through the rim. Slam dunk! His career may look like a slam dunk, being a national champion at the University of Connecticut, and setting beginner records with the Toronto Raptors.
However, life wasn’t always easy for him. His success is due to more than his ability to play basketball and he owes much of who he is today to a skin disease called alopecia areata, which is not infectious but is caused by an error in the immune system that triggers germ-fighting cells to attack the body’s own hair-growing cells. Charlie was affected at age 10 and lost all his hair by age 12. This made him a target for bullying, leading him to withdraw and hide under caps and hoods.
With the support of his mother, Charlie found refuge in basketball. He channeled his frustrations and stress into motivation, improving his skills to the point where his talent overshadowed his condition. The bullying stopped, and his basketball career took off.
All along the way, Charlie has consistently dedicated himself to helping others. Ever since his first year as a new player, he has served as a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, and went on to establish the Charlie Villanueva Foundation, an organization aimed at supporting families with children suffering from alopecia and stopping all forms of bullying. As the son of immigrants from the· Dominican Republic, he has even worked towards ending poverty in that country.

Passage 5
We journalists live in a new age of storytelling, with many new multimedia tools. Many young people don’t even realize it’s new. For them, it’s just normal.
This hit home for me as I was sitting with my 2-year-old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday. I had brought a children’s book to read. It had simple words and colorful pictures — a perfect match for his age.
Picture this: my grandson sitting on my lap as I hold the book in front so he can see the pictures. As I read, he reaches out and pokes (戳) the page with his finger.
What’s up with that? He just likes the pictures, I thought. Then I turned the page and continued. He poked the page even harder. I nearly dropped the book. I was confused: Is there something wrong with this kid?
Then I realized what was happening. He was actually a stranger to books. His father frequently amused the boy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colorful pictures that come alive when you poke them. He thought my storybook was like that.
Sorry, kid. This book is not part of your high-tech world. It’s an outdated, lifeless thing. An antique, like your grandfather. Well, I may be old, but I’m not hopelessly challenged, digitally speaking. I edit video and produce audio. I use mobile payment. I’ve even built websites.
There’s one notable gap in my new-media experience, however: I’ve spent little time in front of a camera, since I have a face made for radio. But that didn’t stop China Daily from asking me last week to share a personal story for a video project about the integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province.
Anyway, grandpa is now an internet star — two minutes of fame! I promise not to let it go to my head. But I will make sure my 2-year-old grandson sees it on his tablet.

However, the news I came across online touched my heart and changed my mind. A little girl from Jieyang, Guangdong was practicing lion dance when a professional lion dance performance team (专业舞狮表演队) passed by. Passage 3
Five years ago, when I taught art at a school in Seattle, I used Tinkertoys as a test at the beginning of a term to find out something about my students. I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said: “Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today — and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”
A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.
Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time, his constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.
Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, “But I’m just not creative.”
“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep?”
“Oh, sure.”
“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you?”
“Nobody. I do it.”
“Really-at night, when you’re asleep?”
“Sure.”
“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay?”

Passage 3
I was about 13 when an uncle gave me a copy of Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World. It was full of ideas that were new to me, so I spent the summer with my head in and out of that book. It spoke to me and brought me into a world of philosophy (哲学).
That love for philosophy lasted until I got to college. Nothing kills the love for philosophy faster than people who think they understand Foucault, Baudrillard, or Confucius better than you — and then try to explain them.
Eric Weiner’s The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers reawakened my love for philosophy. It is not an explanation, but an invitation to think and experience philosophy.
Weiner starts each chapter with a scene on a train ride between cities and then frames each philosopher’s work in the context (背景) of one thing they can help us do better. The end result is a read in which we learn to wonder like Socrates, see like Thoreau, listen like Schopenhauer, and have no regrets like Nietzsche. This, more than a book about understanding philosophy, is a book about learning to use philosophy to improve a life.
He makes philosophical thought an appealing exercise that improves the quality of our experiences, and he does so with plenty of humor. Weiner enters into conversation with some of the most important philosophers in history, and he becomes part of that crowd in the process by decoding (解读) their messages and adding his own interpretation.
The Socrates Express is a fun, sharp book that draws readers in with its apparent simplicity and gradually pulls them in deeper thoughts on desire, loneliness, and aging. The invitation is clear: Weiner wants you to pick up a coffee or tea and sit down with this book. I encourage you to take his offer. It’s worth your time, even if time is something we don’t have a lot of.
7.Who opened the door to philosophy for the author?
A.Foucault. B.Eric Weiner.
C.Jostein Gaarder. D.A college teacher.
8.Why does the author list great philosophers in paragraph 4?
A.To compare Weiner with them.
B.To give examples of great works.
C.To praise their writing skills.
D.To help readers understand Weiner’s book.
9.What does the author like about The Socrates Express?
A.Its views on history are well-presented.
B.Its ideas can be applied to daily life.
C.It includes comments from readers.
D.It leaves an open ending.
10.What does the author think of Weiner’s book?
A.Objective and plain.
B.Daring and ambitious.
C.Serious and hard to follow.
D.Humorous and straightforward.
Passage 4
Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI-powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. This absorbing new book by Catriona Campbell is a practical roadmap addressing the challenges posed by the forthcoming AI revolution (变革).
In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to understand as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a businessperson rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, eventually, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.
As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now — several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse.
Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI — the technology companies and world leaders — so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation (管理), will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall.
AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.
11.What is a feature of AI by Design according to the text?
A.It is packed with complex codes. B.It adopts a down-to-earth writing style.
C.It is intended for AI professionals. D.It provides step-by-step instructions.
12.What does Campbell strongly recommend people to do about AI development?
A.Observe existing regulations on it.
B.Reconsider expert opinions about it.
C.Make joint efforts to keep it under control.
D.Learn from previous experience to slow it down.
13.How does the author introduce AI by Design?
A.By comparing it with other similar works.
B.By sharing reviews of experts and readers.
C.By giving examples of dangers posed by AI.
D.By summarizing the main idea and main points.
14.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To recommend a book on AI. B.To honor an outstanding AI expert.
C.To clarify the definition of AI. D.To raise awareness of the risks of AI.

1.Why are ancient ancestors mentioned?
A.To admire their quick response to fear.
B.To show body’s fear response is inborn.
C.To introduce tough living conditions in ancient days.
D.To demonstrate how they survived the scary situations.
2.How is paragraph 3 developed?
A.By listing data. B.By giving examples.
C.By defining and comparing. D.By explaining and analyzing.
3.Which may be the result of watching terror films frequently?
A.Getting tired of them. B.Doing good to health.
C.Losing interest in other films. D.Being less sensitive to real danger.
4.Which might be the best title for the text?
A.Effects of Fear on Brain and Body. B.Fight or Flight?
C.An Extreme Entertainment. D.Are Terror Films Harmless?

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了看恐怖电影会产生应激反应,并分析了其产生的原因和危害。
1.推理判断题。根据文章第二段第二句“It’s a built-in survival mechanism, which has been with us since our ancient ancestors.(这是一个内置的生存机制,自我们的古代祖先以来就一直伴随着我们。)可知,提及先人的目的是说明身体对恐惧的反应是天生的,是古人遗传下来的。故选B。
2.推理判断题。根据文章第三段“The body’s fear response, or fight-or-flight response, always begins in the amygdala — a part of the brain’s system that’s critical for recognizing threats and processing emotions. This prepares the muscles and brain to rapidly set up a threat response.(人体的恐惧反应,或称“战斗或逃跑”反应,总是始于杏仁核——大脑系统中一个对识别威胁和处理情绪至关重要的部分。
根据文章最后一段“Overexposure to jump scares can make you less sensitive to fear. So people who enjoy terror films regularly might not re-act as strongly to real danger because their brain gets used to these situations.(过度接触突如其来的惊吓会使你对恐惧变得不那么敏感。因此,经常看恐怖片的人可能对真实的危险反应不那么强烈,因为他们的大脑已经习惯了这种情境。)”可知,过度看恐怖电影会使人对真正的危险失去敏感度。故选D。
4.主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文主要介绍了恐惧会对人脑和身体造成的影响及其原因。由此可推知,A项:Effects of Fear on Brain and Body.(恐惧对大脑和身体的影响。)最适合作文章标题。故选 A。
5.What does the author advise patients to do in Paragraph 2?
A.To ask for suggestions from doctors. B.To buy medicines from hospitals.
C.To read the package ingredients of drugs. D.To take drugs as early as possible.
6.What’s the purpose of mentioning cold medicines in Paragraph 3?
A.To provide a medical choice for people who catch a cold.
B.To show cold medicines are more likely to cause bad effects.
C.To explain OTC medicines often have more than one ingredient.
D.To stress the importance of learning about medicines’ ingredients.
7.What can we infer about older people in Paragraph 4?
A.They can’t cope with aging positively. B.Their body can’t handle medicines easily.
C.They are more easily affected by diseases. D.Their desire for health makes them unwise.
8.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Say No to OTC Drugs B.Tips on Taking OTC Drugs
C.OTC Medicines May Not Be Safe D.How to Deal with an OTC Drug Overdose
【答案】5.A 6.D 7.B 8.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要向我们介绍了服用非处方药(OTC),如感冒和流感药物的风险。
5.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.(医生通常对潜在的药物相互作用非常了解,所以对病人来说,询问他们的医生哪些非处方药对他们来说是安全的是非常重要的。)”可知,作者建议病人们应该询问医生哪些非处方药对他们来说是安全的是非常重要的,即作者建议病人向医生寻求建议。故选A。
6.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses. Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients. A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.(仔细阅读非处方药的包装成分以避免重复剂量是很重要的。感冒药通常由多种成分组成。一个人服用单一成分的药物与其中一种多种成分的药物搭配,可能会收到不安全剂量的该成分。)”可知,作者在第三段中提感冒药是为了强调了解药物成分的重要性。故选D。
7.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Older people who are using prescribed drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are.(使用处方药治疗多种健康状况的老年人可能有更高的药物相互作用风险,因为同时使用更多的药物来治疗不同的疾病。衰老的身体不像年轻的身体那样擅长吸收、分配和清除药物。)”可以推断出老年人的身体不容易接受药物。故选B。
8.主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段中的“When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms. Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free.(当感冒和流感来袭时,许多人会不由自主地求助于非处方药(OTC)来克服和治疗他们的症状。虽然这些药物很容易获得并被广泛使用,但许多人可能会惊讶地发现它们并非没有风险。)”可知,本文主要讲的是非处方药(OTC),如感冒和流感药物的风险。C选项“OTC Medicines May Not Be Safe(非处方药可能不安全)”最适合用作本文的标题。故选C。
A.The moon is rich in rare elements. B.Lunar soil can be used for exploring space.
C.The moon can be lived on by humans. D.Lunar soil is a new renewable energy source.
10.What did the researchers work on according to paragraph 3?
A.The process of the sun producing light.
D.The study of using lunar soil for oxygen and fuel production.
【答案】9.B 10.D 11.C 12.D

【答案】13.C 14.C 15.D 16.D

Various “birdcages” unavoidably appear in life, but we can distinguish them. If it is not in line with the actual situation, it is a “negative birdcage”, then we must learn to stop losses in time and maintain a heart of abandonment and separation. If it is a “positive birdcage” that motivates us to develop upward, we can clarify our goals, shop or decorate appropriately, and motivate ourselves to move towards our goals. At this time, you will find that the “birdcage effect” is actually not so terrible!(但如何才能在很多事情上摆脱“鸟笼效应”,甚至反过来利用“鸟笼效应”呢?
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了将虚拟现实技术应用到课堂的现象,并指出了其中的一些问题。
1.推理判断题。根据第一段“Imagine hopping on a school bus and being transported to an immersive (沉浸式的) educational tour of the inside of the human body—and no, not on a fictional episode of The Magic School Bus. 2.推理判断题。根据第二段“Bring VR into more classrooms could enable new kinds of learning opportunities. For example, it may allow drama students to feel like they’re having an immersive, real-time experience watching Shakespeare’s work performed at the Globe Theatre in the 17 century. New Mexico University is using the headsets to teach criminal justice students to investigate virtual crime scenes, and Morehouse College has developed a “digital twin campus” to teach students a range of subjects through VR, both through a partner program with Meta to test educational applications of the technology.(将VR带入更多的教室可以带来新类型的学习机会。
根据第三段中的“Moreover, the cost of involving VR headsets in the classroom could be an obstacle to adoption for the many schools already struggling with limited resources.(此外,对于许多已经在资源有限的情况下苦苦挣扎的学校来说,在课堂上使用VR耳机的成本可能会成为采用的障碍。)”可知,VR设备的价格高,对财政困难的学校来说是一个沉重的负担。故选D。
4.细节理解题。根据最后一段中的““I think that VR is one area where additional research is necessary,” said Vincent Quan, an education researcher and co-executive director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab.(Abdul Latif Jameel贫困行动实验室的教育研究员兼联合执行主任Vincent Quan说:“我认为VR是一个需要进一步研究的领域。”)”可知,Vincent Quan建议有必要对VR设备在教育中的运用进行进一步研究。故选D。
5.Why aren’t electric ears environmentally friendly?
A.They won’t work as well as the common cars. B.They are not powered by solar energy.
C.They cause more pollution to the world, D.They run on electricity produced by burning fuels.
6.What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A.The performance of current solar panels depends on various factors.
B.Powering the electronics costs little.
C.A car’s roof generated enough power to light a bulb.
D.Temperatures have little effect on solar panels.
7.What can we infer about solar energy in the car industry?
A.Most cars are powered by solar energy now. B.Cars may be powered from solar stations.
C.Cars powered by solar energy are of poor quality. D.Solar cars look brighter than electric cars.
8.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.What do solar cars book like? B.Why don’t we power the car with solar energy?
C.How do solar cars work? D.Could solar cars replace the electric cars?
【答案】5.D 6.A 7.B 8.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍目前的电动汽车虽然不使用化石燃料,但是仍然不是绿色的。目前使用的太阳能电池板的效率取决于是否满足不同的标准。
5.细节理解题。根据第一段“People suffer from the misconception that not using fossil fuel means “green” which is kind of absurd, considering the electricity we use is generated by burning the very same fuels!”(人们有一种误解,认为不使用化石燃料就意味着“绿色”,这是一种荒谬的想法,因为我们使用的电力是通过燃烧同样的燃料产生的!)可知,电动汽车不环保是因为它们靠燃烧燃料产生的电力运转。故选D项。
6.推理判断题。根据第三段“Firstly, solar panels occupy a large amount of area.”(首先,太阳能电池板占据了大量的面积。)和“Also, moderate sunny temperature needs to be ideal, as extremely high temperatures can reduce the efficiency of the solar panels.”(此外,温和的阳光温度需要是理想的,因为极高的温度会降低太阳能电池板的效率。)以及“More importantly, the cost of the panels and development required to power the electronics using the sun’s energy outweighs the benefits that solar panels provide.”(更重要的是,利用太阳能为电子设备供电所需的电池板成本和开发成本超过了太阳能电池板提供的好处。)可知,目前太阳能电池板的性能取决于多方面的因素。故选A项。
7.推理判断题。根据第四段“While there is still time before we will be able to drive cars fully powered by solar energy, there are some alternatives, such as solar power stations, which are being designed to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for electricity.”(虽然我们还需要一段时间才能驾驶完全由太阳能驱动的汽车,但仍有一些替代品,如太阳能发电站,其目的是减少我们对化石燃料的电力依赖。)可知,目前,汽车可以由太阳能发电站提供动力。故选B项。
8.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Solar-powered vehicles are surely the future, but not the near future. As the cost of solar panels continues to fall and their efficiency increases, things will begin to look much “brighter” for this alternative and sustainable option!”(太阳能汽车肯定是未来,但不是不久的将来。
B.The negative impact of installing solar panels.
C.The rising labor cost of building solar farms.
D.The most recent advances in solar technology.
10.What does InSPIRE aim to do?
A.Improve the productivity of local farms.
B.Invent new methods for controlling weeds.
C.Make solar projects environmentally friendly.
D.Promote the use of solar energy in rural areas.
11.What is the purpose of the laws mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To conserve pollinators. B.To restrict solar development.
C.To diversify the economy. D.To ensure the supply of energy.
12.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Pollinators: To Leave or to Stay B.Solar Energy: Hope for the Future
C.InSPIRE: A Leader in Agriculture D.Solar Farms: A New Development
【答案】9.B 10.C 11.A 12.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。介绍的是用一种更加友好的方式建立一种新型的太阳能农场,这种新型的农场更有利于保护各种传粉昆虫,从而促进农业的发展。
9.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.(通常,他们最终会用小石头填满该地区,并使用化学物质来控制杂草。结果是,许多社区,特别是在农业地区,将太阳能农场视为土壤的破坏者。)”可知,太阳能开发者采用不环保的方式处理太阳能板安装后产生的问题,导致人们把太阳能农场看作是土壤的破坏者,由此可以推断,开发者在安装太阳能板后忽略了其带来的负面影响。故选B项。
10.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to “low-impact” solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land.(InSPIRE正在研究“低影响”太阳能开发的实用方法,其重点是以对土地更友好的方式建立和运营太阳能农场。)”可知,InSPIRE采用有好的方式建立和运营太阳能农场,也就是使得太阳能农场更加环保。故选C项。
11.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use.(超过28个州通过了与传粉媒介栖息地保护和农药使用有关的法律。)”可知,这些法律都是与保护传粉者栖息地和农药使用相关,所以这些法律的目的是保护授粉者。故选A项。
12.主旨大意题。根据最后一段中的“Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction.(在过去的几年里,许多太阳能农场开发商将太阳能电池板下的空间改造成各种传粉媒介的庇护所,从而改善了土壤并减少了碳排放。)”
【答案】13.D 14.B 15.A 16.B

13.词句猜测题。根据后半句“take pictures of some inside organs(拍一些体外器官的照片)”可知,X射线可以发现体内的异物,由此可知“a foreign object”指的是“偶然进入体内的东西”。故选D。
14.细节理解题。根据文章第四段“The latest CAT scanners can even give clear pictures of active, moving organs, just as a fast-action camera can ‘stop the action’, giving clear pictures of what appears unclear to the eye.(最新的CAT扫描仪甚至可以给出活动器官的清晰图像,就像快速动作相机可以‘定格动作’一样,给出肉眼看起来不清晰的清晰图像。)”可知,最新的CAT扫描仪的特殊用途是提供活动器官的清晰照片。故选B。
15.推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段“Frequent appearance before X-rays can cause skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body. Yet CAT scans actually don’t cause the patient to more radiation than regular X-rays do.(频繁接触X射线可能会对皮肤、癌症或身体其他部位造成损伤。然而,CAT扫描实际上并不会让患者受到的辐射比常规X光更多。)”可推知,站在CAT扫描仪前的患者可能会受到一点辐射。故选A。

Afterward, she said, “I can’t even say it’s a dream come true, because I didn’t even dream of it at any point... I never thought that would be realistic in my life.”
1.What helped Sirine get through her difficult times?
A.Britain’s Got Talent. B.Her passion for music.
C.Support from her parents and doctors. D.Encouragement from four judges.

5.Why did Halloran cry before returning to London?

9.Why did the author put the stub in water?
A.To hope that it would grow. B.To decorate the nice mug.
C.To play a game. D.To remove his bad mood.
10.What is the first sign of life in the author’s eyes?
A.The remaining stub. B.The small leaf.
C.The disappearing cuts. D.The tiny root threads.
11.How would the author feel if in the lettuce’s situation?
A.Hesitant. B.Fearless. C.Confident. D.Annoyed.

17.What do the underlined words “hit home for me” mean in paragraph 2?
A.Provided shelter for me. B.Became very clear to me.

A.He took it for a tablet computer. B.He disliked the colorful pictures.
C.He was angry with his grandpa. D.He wanted to read it by himself.
19.What does the author think of himself?
A.Socially ambitious. B.Physically attractive.
C.Financially independent. D.Digitally competent.

8.The teacher used Tinkertoys in class in order to ________.
A.know more about the students
B.make the lessons more exciting
C.raise the students’ interest in art
D.teach the students about toy design
9.What do we know about the boy mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.He liked to help his teacher. B.He preferred to study alone.
C.He was active in class. D.He was imaginative.
10.What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Mistake. B.Drawback.
C.Difficulty. D.Burden.
11.Why did the teacher ask the students to talk about their dreams?
A.To help them to see their creativity.
B.To find out about their sleeping habits.
C.To help them to improve their memory.
D.To find out about their ways of thinking.
【答案】8.A 9.D 10.B 11.A
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。本文主要讲了作者通过让学生拼装玩具发现并鼓励学生的创造性和想象力。
8.推理判断题。由第二段A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations. 故选A。
9.推理判断题。由第三段中Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.可知,这是一个非常有创造力的人在工作。他的出现意味着我在课堂上有一个意想不到的助教,他的创造力会感染其他学生。所以这个男孩很有想象力和创造力,故选D。
10.词义猜测题。由第四段I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking.
故选A。

【答案】11.B 12.C 13.D 14.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了Catriona Campbell所著AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence一书,该书作为应对AI革命挑战的实用指南,从商业视角阐述AI发展现状与前景,强调控制AI的重要性,呼吁各界协同确保人工智能安全发展,以防潜在危机。
11.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to understand as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. (在错误的人手中,这样一本书可能会被证明像驱动人工智能的计算机代码一样复杂,但谢天谢地,坎贝尔有20多年的专业经验,可以将令人兴奋的内容转化为可理解的内容。)”可知,坎贝尔在书中将令人兴奋的内容转化为可理解的内容,结合下文的“She writes from the practical angle of a businessperson rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, eventually, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.(她从一个商人而非学者的实际角度出发,撰写了一本非常通俗易懂、内容丰富的指南,最终会让你觉得自己几乎和人工智能一样聪明。)”可知,她从实际的角度写的该书,这本书的特点是通俗易懂,由此可推测它采用了朴实的写作风格。故选B项。
