It was Saturday when the entire summer world was bright and fresh. Tom looked at the fence which was long and high, feeling all enthusiasm leaving him. He dipped his brush into the whitewash before moving it along the top board of the fence. He knew other boys would arrive soon with all minds of interesting plans for this day. As walking past him, they would tease him for having to work on a beautiful Saturday—which burnt him like fire.
He, putting his hands into his pockets and taking out all he owned with the expectation of letting someone paint, found nothing that could buy half an hour of freedom. At this dark and hopeless moment, a wonderful idea occurred to him, pouring a great bright light into his mind. He took up his brush and continued to work pleasantly with calm and quietness.
Presently, Ben Rogers came in sight—munching an apple and making joyful noises like the sound of a riverboat as he walked along. Tom went on whitewashing, paying no attention to the steamboat.
“Hello!” Ben said, “I’m going swimming, but you can’t go, can you?”
No answer. Tom moved his brush gently along the fence and surveyed the result. Ben came nearer. Tom’s mouth watered for Ben’s apple while he kept painting the fence.
Ben said, “That’s a lot of work, isn’t it?”
Tom turned suddenly saying “Here you are! Ben! I didn’t notice you.”
“I’m going swimming,” Ben said. “Don’t you wish you could go? Or would you rather work?”
Tom said, “Work? What do you mean ‘work’?”
“Isn’t that work?”
Tom continued painting and answered carelessly, “Maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t. All I know is it suits Tom Sawyer.”
“Do you mean that you enjoy it?”
“I don’t see why I oughtn’t to enjoy it.”
“Does a boy have a chance to paint a fence frequently” said Tom.
Ben stopped munching his apple.
Tom moved his brush back and forth—stepped back to note the effect—added a little paint here and there. Ben watched every move, getting more and more interested, more and more absorbed. After a short time, he said, “Tom, let me whitewash a little.”
Tom seemed to be thinking for a moment before he said, “No, Aunt Polly wants this fence to be perfect. If it was the back fence, maybe you could do it. But this fence beside the street is where everybody can see it. It has to be done right.”
“Oh, come on, let me try. I’ll be careful. Listen, Tom. I’ll give you part of my apple if you let me paint.”
“No, Ben, I’m afraid—”
“I’ll give you all the apple!”
Tom handed the brush to Ben with unwillingness on his face but alacrity in his heart. While the riverboat worked and sweated in the hot sun, Tom, an artist sat in the shade close by, munching his apple, and planning how he could trick more of the boys.
Before long there were enough boys each of whom came along the street; stopped to laugh but soon begged to be allowed to paint. By the middle of the afternoon, Tom had got many treasures while the fence had had three layers of whitewash on it. If he hadn’t run out of whitewash, he would have owned everything belonging to the boys in the village.
Tom said to himself that the world was not so depressing after all. He had discovered a great law of human action: in order to make a man cover a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain.
4. By using “Tom continued painting and answered carelessly”, the author shows Tom ______ when he was talking to Ben.
A. made mistakes B. damaged things
C. was natural D. wasn’t concentrating
5. The underlined word “alacrity” in the last but two paragraph most probable means “______”.

B. Tom was asked to help Aunt Polly paint the fence
C. Tom did not get along well with his friends
D. Tom was very busy that Saturday afternoon.
7. We can draw a conclusion from the last paragraph that _______.

D. a bad excuse is better than none.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A
根据“Tom continued painting and answered carelessly, “Maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t.”(汤姆继续画画,漫不经心地回答说:“也许是,也许不是。)Tom这样做是想表现的很自然,以引起Ben的好奇心,最后引诱Ben上钩。故C正确。
【5题详解】
词义猜测题。根据“Tom handed the brush to Ben with unwillingness on his face but alacrity in his heart”(汤姆把刷子递给本,脸上不情愿,心里却很alacrity)实际上Tom成功的诱骗了Ben帮他干活,表面上很不情愿,实际上心里很急切,说明Tom很狡猾,故选D项。
根据文章“Aunt Polly wants this fence to be perfect. If it was the back fence, maybe you could do it.”(波莉姨妈希望这个栅栏完美无缺。
根据最后一段“in order to make a man cover a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain.”(要使一个人掩盖一件事,只要使这件事难以达到就行了)说明在人们看来难以得到的东西都是好的。故A正确。
C
While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors—drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing (酝酿), a new study finds that there’s another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.
These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle. Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study warns that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors.
The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including excessive (过多的) alcohol use, heavy smoking and high media use. Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression, in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger— nearly one third of our sample— that it became a key finding of the study.”
Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.
8. Which teenager probably belongs to the “invisible group”?
A. A teenager who drinks frequently. B. A teenager who exercises regularly.
C. A teenager who skips school. D. A teenager who suffers from a lack of sleep.
9. What can we know about the new study?
A. It was intended to dig into the reasons for depression.
B. Its findings were under expectation of the research team.
C. It was conducted by analyzing and comparing the previous data.
D. It revealed an alarming rate of the invisible group suffering depression.
10. What is Carli’s attitude toward the findings?
A. Unclear. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
11. What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To introduce a new therapy for teens’ mental disorder.
B. To share a novel psychological experiment with teens.
C. To caution teens against developing unhealthy habits.
D. To warn about the unobserved signals for teens’ mental problems.
D 9. D 10. B 11. D
根据第二段“These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle. Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study warns that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors.(这些青少年使用大量的媒体,睡眠不足,久坐不动。当然,这听起来像是地球上每个青少年的描述。但研究警告说,正是那些极度从事这三种行为的青少年才真正处于危险之中。因为他们的行为通常不被视为危险信号,这些年轻人被研究报告的作者称为“隐形风险”群体)”可知,“隐形风险”群体的青少年具有大量使用媒体、睡眠不足、久坐的特点。所以D选项“一个睡眠不足的青少年”可能属于“隐形群体”。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger — nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study.”(这一发现让Carli措手不及。“我们没有预料到这一点,”他说。“高风险组和低风险组是显而易见的,但第三组不仅出乎意料。它如此独特,规模如此之大——几乎占我们样本的三分之一——以至于它成为了这项研究的关键发现。”)”可知,研究结果让Carli感到意外,这个“隐形群体”的比例很大,成为了研究的关键发现,说明这项新研究揭示了“隐形群体”中患抑郁症的惊人比例。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.(Carli指出,这项研究最重要的意义之一在于,它为家长、教师和心理健康服务提供者提供了新的早期预警信号。他强调,对心理健康问题进行早期识别、支持和治疗,是防止其演变为全面心理疾病的最佳方式)”可知,Carli 认为研究很有意义,也就是说Carli对研究发现的态度是积极的。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors—drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing (酝酿), a new study finds that there’s another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.(虽然有抑郁风险的青少年有危险行为——喝酒、抽烟和逃课,这通常会提醒父母和老师严重的问题正在酝酿,但一项新的研究发现,还有另一群青少年几乎同样有经历相同心理症状的危险)”,最后一段的“Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers.(Carli指出,这项研究最重要的意义之一在于,它为家长、教师和心理健康服务提供者提供了新的早期预警信号)”以及全文内容可知,文章围绕新研究展开,重点强调“隐形风险”群体(大量使用媒体、睡眠不足、久坐)的心理健康问题常被忽视,其抑郁风险接近高风险群体。
D
American education stands as a model for many countries around the world. Findings, however, have shown that students spend more time in American schools, but this time spent doesn’t exactly result in a better performance when compared with students in other countries, where the young spend fewer hours in school. Is this an important signal for the need to review the American school system?
It’s commonly believed that spending longer hours in school results in better performance; this has been found to be untrue. The time spent in school isn’t the only reason why students in Japan and South Korea do well in international examinations. The excellent performances of these students are tied to extra trainings such as cram schools (补习班)and the time spent during these extra periods of learning isn’t part of the time spent at school.
American schools start early in the morning, with the kids having lunch in school and they stay until school closes. But the school time is flexible (灵活)in countries such as Germany and Finland and the kids have lunch at home and won’t return, but will continue with homework.
It is interesting to note that the education system in America within the last ten years has embraced (包含)some school schedules such as online classes, evening classes and this has allowed students to take part in after-class activities. Many are the results of the development of technology.
It’s not actually advised to compare the American school system with that of other countries. What is important is that each country should work hard to make their education system achieve more results.
12. What do we know about the American school system?
A. It isn’t as good as we thought. B. It has improved greatly recently.
C. It will make school time shorter. D. It puts students under great stress.
13. How does the text explain the American school system in Paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By studying reasons.
C. By making comparison. D. By explaining its changes.
14. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A. More Americans can receive education.
B. American education is trying to be more flexible.
C. Technology makes American students perform better.
D. American schools are more developed than other countries’.
15. What’s the best title of the text?
A. The development of the education system in America
B. Differences between American school system and other countries’
C. Why have American kids done worse in school in recent years?
D. Is it necessary for American kids to spend long hours in school?
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据第一段“American education stands as a model for many countries around the world. Findings, however, have shown that students spend more time in American schools but this time spent doesn’t exactly result in a better performance when compared with students in other countries, where the young spend fewer hours in school. Is this an important signal for the need to review the American school system?(美国的教育是世界上许多国家的榜样。然而,研究结果表明,学生在美国学校花的时间更多,但与其他国家的学生相比,这段时间并不能带来更好的表现,因为其他国家的学生在学校的时间更少。这是需要重新审视美国学校体系的重要信号吗?)”可知,虽然美国教育是其他国家的榜样,但实际上美国学生在校时间长,却并未取得更好的表现。因此得出结论:美国的教育并未像人们想象的那么好。故选A。
根据第三段“American schools start early in the morning, with the kids having lunch in school and they stay until school closes. But the school time is flexible in countries such as Germany and Finland and the kids have lunch at home and won’t return, but will continue with homework.(美国学校早上很早就开始上课,孩子们在学校吃午饭,他们一直待到学校关门。但在德国和芬兰等国家,上学时间是灵活的,孩子们在家里吃完午饭就不回来了,但会继续做作业。)”可知,此处列举了美国,德国和芬兰等国家的上课时间安排差异,因此是通过对比的方式解释美国教育系统的。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“It is interesting to note that the education system in America within the last ten years has embraced (采纳) some school schedules such as online classes, evening classes and this has allowed students to take part in after-class activities.(有趣的是,美国的教育系统在过去的十年里已经接纳了学校安排在线课程,夜校,这使得学生参加课外活动。)”
根据第一段“American education stands as a model for many countries around the world. Findings, however, have shown that students spend more time in American schools but this time spent doesn’t exactly result in a better performance when compared with students in other countries, where the young spend fewer hours in school. Is this an important signal for the need to review the American school system?(美国的教育是世界上许多国家的榜样。然而,研究结果表明,学生在美国学校花的时间更多,但与其他国家的学生相比,这段时间并不能带来更好的表现,因为其他国家的学生在学校的时间更少。这是需要重新审视美国学校体系的重要信号吗?)”可知,这里通过一个反问句的形式提出论点:需要重新审视美国的教育体系。所以短文的最佳标题为“Is it necessary for American kids to spend long hours in school?(美国孩子有必要在学校花很长时间吗?)”。
Four tips on increasing your confidence
Avoid addiction to social media.___16___ If you stay connected to your phone and dive into social media all the time, your energy is going to be wasted. Addiction to social media is a big no-no when it comes to building your confidence. It’s all too easy to compare and feel hopeless when you see those online photos. It’s too much!
Know your triggers (触发因素). There are things you probably know about yourself that send you down the path of negativity.___17___Whatever the trigger is, you can make clever choices to ensure you feel your best. This is amazing for reducing anxiety and building your confidence.
___18___You know the one I’m talking about: the one that’s always telling you, “You’re not good enough,” “That didn’t work,” or “Why did you say this?” It’s part of life to have doubts, but if that critical voice is too loud, you won’t hear all the good stuff you’re doing. So, when you hear that voice of criticism, switch it off and focus on something you’re grateful for or something positive you did.___19___
Tackle small goals first. Tiny goals can lead to huge results. If you have a major achievement in mind, break it down into the smallest goal possible.___20___For example, let’s say you want to lose 20 pounds. I want you to lose one pound and do one activity that you can commit to, like a 7-minute workout. This will build new, positive habits that will eventually make you achieve much.
A. Keep away from your inner critic.
B. Surround yourself with honest people.
C. If you’re aware of those things, you can avoid them.
D. Stop putting things off until you feel more confident.
E. That way, you can actually accomplish it and feel amazed.
F. Or literally look in the mirror and say, “Hey, I’m doing awesomely.”
G. To build your confidence, remember that real magic happens in real life.
G 17. C 18. A 19. F 20. E

根据空后内容“If you stay connected to your phone and dive into social media all the time, your energy is going to be wasted.(如果你一直与手机保持联系并沉迷于社交媒体,你的精力就会被浪费掉)”可知,空处建议我们要远离社交媒体。选项G“To build your confidence, remember that real magic happens in real life.(为了建立自信,记住真正的奇迹发生在现实生活中)”符合语境,建议读者要把注意力放在现实生活中,而不是沉迷于社交媒体。且“real life”与空后的“social media”形成对比,且“build your confidence”与下文的标题“increasing your confidence”相呼应。故选G。
根据空前内容“There are things you probably know about yourself that send you down the path of negativity.(有些事情是你可能知道的,这些事情会让你走向消极的道路)”以及空后“Whatever the trigger is, you can make clever choices to ensure you feel your best.(无论触发因素是什么,你都可以做出明智的选择来确保你感觉最好)”可推测,空处建议读者如果意识到会让自己走向消极道路的事情,就可以避免它们。选项C“If you’re aware of those things, you can avoid them.(如果你意识到这些事情,你就可以避免它们)”符合上下文内容,指出如果意识到会让自己走向消极道路的事情,最好避免这些事情。故选C。

根据空前内容“So, when you hear that voice of criticism, switch it off and focus on something you’re grateful for or something positive you did.(所以,当你听到那个批评的声音时,关掉它,专注于你感激的事情或者你做的积极的事情)”可推测,空处是在建议读者在关掉内心的批评者之后要去做一些积极的事情。选项F“Or literally look in the mirror and say, “Hey, I’m doing awesomely.”(或者干脆对着镜子说,‘嘿,我做得很棒。’)”符合语境,是对前文“focus on something you’re grateful for or something positive you did”的进一步说明。故选F。

If you have a major achievement in mind, break it down into the smallest goal possible.(先完成小目标。

It was Saturday when the entire summer world was bright and fresh. Tom looked at the fence, which was long and high, feeling all enthusiasm leaving him.

“We didn’t expect that” he says.

So, when you hear that voice of criticism, switch it off and focus on something you’re grateful for or something positive you did.___19___
