The minister will be giving a speech on international affairs in July. They won’t be playing football on Sunday morning. When shall I be expecting you this evening? We will be seeing a fashion show this time tomorrow. I’ll be taking my holidays soon. Will you be telephoning him tomorrow? I will go to Shanghai tomorrow. (表意愿、打算、决心等) I will be going to Shanghai tomorrow. (单纯表将来时间) I’ll be having classes tomorrow morning. They will be watching football game now. It’s Sunday. She won’t be studying now. Will you be needing anything else? When will you be coming to see me? Will you be lending me your bike? Be careful when you are crossing the street. If Tom is doing his homework when you come back, don’t disturb him, please. What will you be doing at seven the day after tomorrow? What will you do at seven the day after tomorrow? I’ll be going to see him after school. I’ll go to see him after school. When will you be finishing your homework? When will you finish your homework? Mary won’t be paying this bill. (单纯谈未来情况) Mary won’t pay this bill. 1. Yvonne used to be CEO of a London insurance company and I was on the board of a branding agency, so we had decided to join forces and build something together. The company, Dutch Engels, did very well quickly and we were running around like headless chickens. There was lots of travel — Singapore, the EU, and we’d won a project where the client wanted us to spend six months in the US. We’d be standing on the platform getting a tube at seven in the morning, thinking, “Why are we juggling all this? There must be a better way to live.” In April 2018, we were in Edinburgh for work, rushing off our feet, when someone at the meeting said that we looked like we needed a break. She suggested we go to one of the islands for a couple of days. It wasn’t a bad idea. Yvonne looked on Google Earth and spotted this tiny island, less than eight miles long and two miles wide. It looked like it was in the tropics — turquoise blue water and golden sand beaches. We headed there. The ferry journey from Oban was splendid — you’ve got the mountains, the ocean, the yachts. It was a world we didn’t even know existed. Everything conspired (共同促成) to make us fall in love with the place. Both of us were feeling this gut instinct (直觉) which said, “This feels like home. Make this our home.” The great thing about having your own business is that you can make those decisions. That same day, instead of looking for a place to spend a holiday, we started looking for a place to live. The back windows looked on to the sea and the hills with nothing blocking the view. We went back to London and sold our apartment. By October, we’d moved here permanently. We ended up raising sheep there and they’re not cheap. We went ahead and launched a woolly hat business — WELAN. We sell online and in the shop on Tiree harbour. Yvonne does the spinning and the knitting. I wash the wool, separate the fibres — all the dirty jobs. We still run the consultancy. 4. What did Yvonne and I mean by “Why are we juggling all this”? A. They made a mess in the business. B. They experienced a sense of failure. C. They were tired of the present life. D. They had to travel here and there. 5. Why did Yvonne and I go to an island? A. To go on business. B. To have a break. C. To attend a meeting. D. To inspect the beaches. 6. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. Their love for the island. B. Their exploration around the island. C. Their decision on the move. D. Their feelings during the journey. 7. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Splendid Journey, Peaceful Mood B. Beautiful Harbors, Dream Home C. Joint Forces, Hard Work D. Tiny island, Better Life 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. By October, we’d moved here permanently.(我们回到伦敦,卖掉了我们的公寓。 D。 C People consistently underestimate how much others in their social circle might appreciate an unexpected phone call, text or email just to say hello, and the more surprising the connection, the greater the appreciation, according to a new study. In the study, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh conducted some experiments involving more than 5, 900 participants. In one experiment, half of the participants were asked to recall the last time they reached out to someone in their social circle after a prolonged (长期的) period of not interacting with them. The rest were asked to recall a similar situation where someone reached out to them. Participants were then asked to indicate on a 7-point scale how much either they or the person they reached out to appreciated. People who recalled reaching out thought the gesture was significantly less appreciated than those who recalled receiving a communication. In other experiments, participants sent a short note, or a small gift, to someone in their social circle with whom they had not interacted in a while. Similar to the previous experiment, participants who initiated (发起) contact were asked to rate on a 7-point scale the extent to which they thought the recipient would appreciate or feel grateful for the contact. After the notes or gifts were sent, researchers also asked the recipients to rate their appreciation. Across all experiments, those who initiated the communication significantly underestimated the extent to which recipients would appreciate the act of reaching out. Besides, the researchers found that people receiving the communication placed greater focus than those initiating the communication on the surprise element, and this heightened focus on surprise was associated with higher appreciation. “We also found that people underestimated others’ appreciation to a greater extent when the communication was more surprising, as opposed to part of a regular communication pattern, or the social ties between the two participants were weak,” added lead author Peggy Liu. Initiating social contact after a prolonged period of disconnection can be daunting because people worry about how such a gesture might be received. But these findings suggest that their hesitations may be unnecessary, as others are likely to appreciate being reached out to more than people think. 8.How did the researchers conduct the experiments? A. By listing arguments. B. By giving examples. C. By making assumptions. D. By making comparisons. 9. According to paragraph 3, what were the participants asked to do? A. To rank their appreciation. B. To make an unexpected call. C. To express their thoughts. D. To do the same experiments. 10. Based on the research, who would show higher appreciation? A. One receiving a gift of great value. B. One often contacted by a close friend. C. One connected quite unexpectedly. D. One making regular contacts with others. 11. What does the underlined word “daunting” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Unbearable. B. Discouraging. C. Illogical. D. Immoral. D 9. A 10. C 11. 故选A。 根据第四段中的“Besides, the researchers found that people receiving the communication placed greater focus than those initiating the communication on the surprise element, and this heightened focus on surprise was associated with higher appreciation. 根据划线词下文“because people worry about how such a gesture might be received. 由此推知,划线词daunting与discouraging(令人气馁的)意思接近。故选B。 D I Don’t Want to Be … To those who, my dear parents, teachers, and seniors, want to see the future of China in us. His mother who was engaged in her work replied casually, and he went away. It was bitter cold outside. Though he had his cap and muffler (厚手套) with him, he could still perceive much cold. He followed his daily routine when something different happened to him. There laid a small puppy on the other side of the road, just beside a canal, who seemed shivering and trembling with the cold. He went towards it, looked into its eyes, experienced its pain and couldn’t help but pick it up on his hands. It was voiceless, but expressed everything to the boy, without any language. There was no other thought which stroked his mind and he decided to take that puppy with him to his home. Then came a thought of his mother, who never liked dogs and restricted whenever possible. But his compassionate feeling overcame all his fears and he went back to his home, holding the puppy in his hands. He headed on towards his home though he wanted not to go and thought if he could delay his arrival at his home, but no way possible … After five minutes of thoughtful walk, he reached his home, where was his mother, who was surely to be annoyed with a puppy in his hands. He got inside his home and underwent what was expected. His mother asked furiously “What is it?”, and continued a number of questions when Rohan uttered a single sentence “Mumma, he needs us”, which made her mother believe “What Love is”. And his mother remembered the words of her favourite teacher “Love is the feeling to help someone when he is in need, knowing there would be barriers” . His mother allowed that puppy to stay with them. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Then came the day when Rohan had to leave home to study abroad. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version 1 His mother allowed that puppy to stay with them. Surprised but overjoyed, Rohan thanked his mother and then found a warm place to settle him. About two hours later, the trembling puppy recovered and became full of life. He looked so cute and adorable that Rohan fell in deep love with him immediately. From then on, apart from feeding and walking him, Rohan played with him and even trained him to behave well every day after school. Gradually, he became attached to Rohan and familiar with the whole family. Then came the day when Rohan had to leave home to study abroad. Worried about his companion, Rohan hated to part from the family. Sensing Rohan’s unease, his mother went over and told him that she was willing to take care of him during his absence. She also said she knew he needed them and that there should be no barrier to love. Deeply moved and grateful, Rohan hugged his mother. The dog wagged his tail around them, seeming to understand what was happening. With his bags packed, Rohan said good-bye to his family and set out on his journey with great relief. One possible version 2 His mother allowed that puppy to stay with them. Rohan thanked his mother many times, rushed into the bathroom (puppy in hand) and showered the puppy. From then on Rohan and the puppy accompanied each other, played and grew together. At first, the little creature was cautious and shy, but gradually he became familiar with the family and accepted “Puppy” as his name. Every morning Puppy would see Rohan off to school reluctantly. Every evening he would welcome Rohan back home, wagging his tail and licking Rohan passionately. The two were just like peas and carrots. Then came the day when Rohan had to leave home to study abroad. He repeatedly asked his mother to take good care of Puppy before he tore himself away from home. Mom took over his daily routine. She and Puppy accompanied each other and played with each other. Every morning and evening she would walk Puppy to the park and the two had great fun. One evening, when Rohan video-called his mother, Puppy appeared on the screen, licking his mother’s cheeks now and the screen then. Seeing this, Rohan thanked his mother wholeheartedly. “Son, he needs us.” his mother stroked Puppy on the head, smiling, “and we need him.” 词汇激活(一个词汇要写出相近的表达) 行为类 ①安置:settle/emplace ②照顾:take care of /attend to ③出发:set out/start off 情绪类 ①高兴的:overjoyed /happy ②轻松地:with great relief/ with ease 【点睛】[高分句型1] He looked so cute and adorable that Rohan fell in deep love with him immediately. (运用了so...that句型) [高分句型2] The dog wagged his tail around them, seeming to understand what was happening. (运用了what引导的宾语从句和现在分词作状语) [高分句型3] Sensing Rohan’s unease, his mother went over and told him that she was willing to take care of him during his absence.
