On the banks of Hallstätter See, the town of Hallstatt and its amazing landscape enjoy UNESCO protection. The 16th-century townhouses, arid snow o£ winter make this the perfect place for getting into the festive atmosphere. Picture brightly lit trees and stands selling decorations, and you’re halfway to imagining just how special this town is.

“Tell me your names and which year of graduate school you're in,” the visiting speaker asked. My discomfort grew as everyone else gave their answers. When my turn came, I swallowed and said I was in my sixth year. “I think it is the student's problem if she spends over 5 years finishing a PhD,” the speaker replied. His comment was the final straw.
Right from the start of graduate school, I had been aware that the requirements of my department and my adviser might make my PhD take longer than average. Students need to publish two first-author papers to graduate and my adviser requires students to take the lead in all experiments so we can have full ownership of our work and develop various scientific techniques.
I was comfortable with taking longer to become an independent scientist. My adviser had some projects he wanted to handle and I chose one to work on, knowing I could draw on his expertise (专业知识) and gain support from lab mates. However, I investigated 10 different hypotheses (假说) — just to prove each a dead end. Each time the only choice was to make the next likely hypothesis and start over in a different direction. The lack of progress was wearing me down.
Then came the speaker's comment. I broke down and went to my adviser. He pointed out that over the past 6 years I had mastered many difficult techniques. My growing expertise was comparable with the very best. If I didn't have the answer to my research question yet, it was because of the complexity of the answer, not because of personal shortcomings.
This viewpoint helped calm me. It helped me push forward with determination and perseverance Under my adviser's continued guidance and support, I hit on a hypothesis that worked out and I graduated finally. I realized many graduate students were in the same boat as I was. I wish I could tell them what I came to learn: No one's PhD journey is the same; all we need to do is stick to it.
4. What contributed to the author's longer-than-average PhD journey?
A. Insufficient academic support and guidance.
B. Constant interruption from visiting speakers.
C. Lack of motivation to complete the experiments.
D. High standards set by the department and the adviser.
5. What can we learn about the author throughout the research process?
A. She experienced a lack of teamwork spirit. B. She met with many struggles and failures.
C. She overly relied on assistance from others. D. She was hesitant when faced with challenges.
6. Which of the following words can best describe the author's adviser?
A. Strict but inspiring. B. Critical and independent.
C. Humorous but patient. D. Knowledgeable but particular.
7. What lesson can we draw from the author's experience?
A. Good advice is beyond all price. B. Many hands are better than one.
C. Success belongs to the persevering. D. The first step is always the hardest
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. C

In March 2023, a group of computer scientists at Microsoft Research published an assessment of OpenAI’s new chatbot, GPT-4. The team report drew global attention to one test in particular. They put this question to GPT-4.
Here we have a book, nine eggs, a laptop, a bottle and a nail. Please tell me how to stack (摞起) them onto each other in a stable manner.
This is not an essay question. Nor is it a story problem. It is a practical problem requiring common sense and even original thought.
Earlier versions of the chatbot gave absurd answers (such as stacking the nine eggs on top of each other). But GPT-4’s answer called for placing the eggs in a three-by-three arrangement between the book and the laptop. The egg layer supports the book, whose weight secures the eggs in place. The book in turn supports the bottle and nail. This answer, praised as a success, resulted in the current global wave of AI anxiety. It has led discussions about how large language models (LLMs) are able to perform creative tasks.
The egg-stacking puzzle is an example of a functional fixedness problem. As described by Gestalt psychologist Karl Duncker in a 1945 paper, these ask the solver to complete a task with a given set of objects. The solution includes using some of the objects in unusual or creative ways.
By 2022, LLMs were being trained on as many as 17 trillion words of human-generated text, mainly from the Internet. It’s all but certain that GPT-4 encountered functional fixedness problems in its training.
Are LLMs truly original, or are they just plagiarists (剽窃者) good at covering their tracks? There’s nothing completely new under the sun. Edison did not invent the light bulb; he improved it. Most so-called creators apply knowledge from different fields to a problem and arrive at a solution. It’s more a matter of making relevant connections than of creating something completely new. If LLMs are indeed developing the ability to make relevant connections, that would be a great — and worrying — development.
8. What do we know about the question put to GPT-4?
A. It is rather pointed. B. It is a math problem.
C. It is a bit challenging. D. It is about text processing.
9. What did GPT-4’s answer lead to?
A. Widespread praise from experts.
B. Growing worry among the public.
C. A heated discussion on where AI will go.
D. An understanding of why AI should be developed.
10. Which of the following can best describe GPT-4’s answer?
A. It has beaten human intelligence.
B. It can hardly be put into practice.
C. It is based on previous training.
D. It is completely original.
11. What is mainly stressed in the last paragraph?
A. The need to have great creators. B. The importance of being original.
C. The difficulty of creating something new. D. The power of making relevant connections.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. C 11. D
【解析】

【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“There’s nothing completely new under the sun. Edison did not invent the light bulb; he improved it. Most so-called creators apply knowledge from different fields to a problem and arrive at a solution. It’s more a matter of making relevant connections than of creating something completely new. (太阳底下没有全新的东西。电灯不是爱迪生发明的;他改进了它。大多数所谓的创造者将不同领域的知识应用于一个问题,并得出解决方案。更重要的是建立相关的联系,而不是创造全新的东西。)”可知,此处说明创造或创新的关键在于联结不同领域的知识,建立相关的联系,给出解决方案。由此可知,这里在强调建立相关联系的力量。故选D项。

Imagine a world where nothing ends up in landfill. Instead, everything can be reused and recycled, creating products that never reach their “end of life”. According to a recent report by the Circle Economy Foundation, only 7.2% of all used materials are being cycled back to be reused and recycled without creating waste.
An Italian company aims to change this by creating furniture products made from a plastic-like biomaterial, which is fully organic and biodegradable (可生物降解), and can be used over and over again. Using fruit peel, orange seeds and coffee grounds collected from businesses in Italy, the company can redistribute products to the same businesses for use in their offices, instead of furniture made from common plastic. If, by mistake, any of the material ends up in the ocean, it doesn’t produce any microplastics.
Each product is made through a four-step process. First, the food waste is dried and crushed into a very fine powder. Then, the powder is mixed with a biodegradable plastic alternative known as polyhydroxybutyrat (PHB), with the fruit waste making the PHB more study (坚固的). The material is then turned into a filament (细丝) and, using a spool, put into a 3D printer.
Because a lot of food waste would be buried and incinerated in the landfill, which would produce lots of carbon dioxide, Reusing fruit peel and coffee grounds decrease carbon dioxide from the production of plastic, according to the director of operations in the company. He adds that the biomaterial is as sturdy as wood, and won’t begin to break down unless it’s touched by water, bacteria or acidity.
Despite its eco-friendly benefits, the biomaterial is expensive. It costs probably six times more than common plastic, and it is a very difficult and expensive process, so this is why many companies aren’t doing it.
However, the director is hopeful that in a few years, as-more consumers and businesses are forced to face the damage that unsustainable plastic is doing to the planet, the biomaterial will be much more widely used. “We really believe this is the material of the future,” says the director. “Little by little, a step at a time.”
12. What is a problem faced by the current world according to paragraph 1?
A. Pollution is becoming milder.
B. The rate of recycling is too low.
C. Plastic poses a threat to the ocean.
D. New material needs to be improved.
13. What do we know about the biomaterial?
A. It is of benefit to the environment.
B. It is cheaper than common plastic.
C It is given a welcome by businesses.
D. It has gradually replaced common plastic.
14. What does the underlined word “incinerated” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Damaged. B. Burned. C. Selected. D. Recovered.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. New Material: One Way To Regain Fruit Peel
B. From Landfill To Furniture: The Journey Of Furniture
C. Sustainable Material: The Future Of Eco-Friendly Furniture
D. Italian Businesses Using New Strategies To Manage Industrial Waste

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Diana!” I yelled multiple times. I knew she was intentionally being naughty.
It had been about nine months since we got Diana. The day that my mother let me choose one from the kennel (养狗场), she came over and started biting my shoelaces while the other puppies sat silently in the sun. I knew she was the perfect dog for me. And, for some reason, that feisty (充满活力的) energy was everything that I needed in my life.
On this particular night, however, that feisty energy was making me frustrated.
We lived in a remote area, and my mother didn’t like me walking Diana too late after school. But I loved challenging the rules, so I ignored her warnings and set out later than usual that day.
But, as the sun set and the approaching night cast unsettling shadows among the trees, I couldn’t help but feel nervous. Anxieties flooded my mind — thoughts of possibly getting lost, the fear of encountering some frightening creature emerging unexpectedly from the darkness. The hairs on the back of my arms stood on end.
“Diana!” I yelled again, this time with true fear in my voice. She finally came back.
Relief set in as I tied her to the leash (拴狗链).Then we set off in the direction of our home — or so I thought.
After about ten minutes, we had lost the path. I looked around and could just about make out the open surface of a dried-up lake. I knew that home wasn’t far away.
I’d never walked across the lake before, and my mother had warned against it, but I just wanted to get home quickly. So, rather than going all the way around, I decided I’d feel safer taking the shortcut (近路) across the lake.
Diana went first. In the fading light, I could see that the mud directly below her paws was dry and delicate. I stepped out onto the lake, and my foot went in a little deeper than expected. Carefully, I took a second step, but this time I was sinking. Below the hard-looking surface was wet-mud soup, and it was pulling me under.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Help me!” I yelled loudly.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My mother was there when I walked in the door with mud all over me.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
“Help me!” I yelled loudly. In the freezing twilight, Diana sensed danger. Quickly, she withdrew to the safety of the shore. With remarkable determination, Diana seized the leash, securing herself firmly and becoming my lifeline, pulling inch by inch. Tears welled in my eyes as her feisty energy transformed into a heroic effort. With her assistance, I reached safety, pulling myself out of the mud. In a state of shock, we began our journey home, taking a different route around the lake. A silent gratitude lingered between us.
My mother was there when I walked in the door with mud all over me. I explained to her the situation. My mother gave me a frustrated look, but she knew that I had learned a lesson and didn’t push me to say more at the time, for which I was thankful. I looked down at Diana and knew that I had been right to trust my intuition on the day that I chose her. But I realized that her feisty energy was more than something I just needed in my life. Because of it, I had been saved.

第一节 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Magical Towns and Cities at Christmas
Hallstatt, Austria
On the banks of Hallstätter See, the town of Hallstatt and its amazing landscape enjoy UNESCO protection. The 16th-century townhouses, arid snow o£ winter make this the perfect place for getting into the festive atmosphere. Picture brightly lit trees and stands selling decorations, and you’re halfway to imagining just how special this town is.
Colmar, France
There are plenty of wonderful Christmas markets to be found all over Europe. But few catch the imagination in a fairytale setting quite like that of Colmar. More than six themed markets can be found in the center, linked by lit streets, where wooden houses are packed tightly together. At around 5:00 pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays, a children’s band will be on stage, providing even more holiday cheer.
Rudesheim, Germany
Located in the heart of the Rhine Valley’s wine-making country, Rudesheim is a top destination throughout the year. However, once the night draws in and Christmas comes into view, the town takes on a special atmosphere. Those arriving by riverboat can go to the Christmas Market of Nations, which is filled with stores selling gifts and traditional festive dishes from all over the world.
Tromso, Norway
Tromso has been a cultural center with its Arctic Cathedral, the home of regular concerts and events. It’s over the festive season, when there is no daylight, that the city, located high above the Arctic Circle, becomes a must-see. Visitors can taste a hot chocolate before taking the cable car (缆车) above the city to catch sight of the northern lights.
1. What can visitors see in Hallstatt?
A. Old townhouses. B. Northern lights.
C. Arctic Cathedral. D. Rhine Valley.
2. When will the children’s band give a performance?
A. On Thursdays. B. On Fridays. C. On Saturdays. D. On Sundays.
3. Where should visitors go for traditional festive food from various countries?

C. Success belongs to the persevering. D. The first step is always the hardest
The egg layer supports the book whose weight secures the eggs in place.
A It is rather pointed. B. It is a math problem.
C It is a bit challenging.
D
Imagine a world where nothing ends up in landfill. Instead, everything can be reused and recycled, creating products that never reach their “end of life”. According to a recent report by the Circle Economy Foundation, only 7.2% of all used materials are being cycled back to be reused and recycled without creating waste.
An Italian company aims to change this by creating furniture products made from a plastic-like biomaterial, which is fully organic and biodegradable (可生物降解的), and can be used over and over again.
C. It is given a welcome by businesses.
D. It has gradually replaced common plastic.
14. What does the underlined word “incinerated” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Damaged. B. Burned. C. Selected. D. Recovered.
15. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. New Material: One Way To Regain Fruit Peel
B. From Landfill To Furniture: The Journey Of Furniture
C. Sustainable Material: The Future Of Eco-Friendly Furniture
D. Italian Businesses Using New Strategies To Manage Industrial Waste
