Then he gave the students a second option. If the teens wanted to keep the Warriors band going and teach themselves, the school would support them. Most students decided to take a different class, but ten students took him up on the offer. The guys didn't give up faced with unpleasant situations and they found the courage to keep the band going. The ten band members elected Hailey Fitzgerald, 17, as band director, and then invited two teachers from the school to serve as advisors. Math teacher Jennifer Nail-Cook agreed to offer support.“They are an impressive bunch of kids,” Nail-Cook said. “We are all very proud of them.” Band students practice the school song every day,and they have learned to work together, Fitzgerald said. They also had to solve a problem when they realized they had too many drummers (鼓手). The band's latest performance was at their school's Homecoming Day. “When we do our school song, that's probably everybody's favorite,” said Jadyn Lane, 17. “To see so many people supporting and cheering us on, that's a huge motivator.” Several school alumni (校友) volunteered to join the students in the stands on Homecoming Day. “Our school is the heart of the community,” Riley said. “Everyone is really appreciative of these kids working together to make sure our school still has a band. It's unbelievable to witness the progress they've made on their own.” Years from now, Fitzgerald said she imagines she’ll look back on her junior year as band director with pride. “It was never an option for us to quit — we all love it too much,” she said. 29. According to a government report, TCM has been introduced into 183 countries and regions around the world. However, westerners only have a little knowledge of TCM. Their understanding of TCM may be limited to acupuncture(针灸), cupping and massage(按摩). For instance, the purple, injury-like marks left on a U.S. famous swimmer’s back from cupping to relax his muscles and reduce pain became the centre of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016. In fact, Chinese herbs(药草) play a more important role in curing diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. Therefore, it is disappointing to know that although 103 World Health Organisation member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognise Chinese herbal medicine. TCM is much less popular than Western medicine partly due to the slow development of Chinese herbs. Herbs can be made into pills, powder and soup. The kind of herbs used, their quality, quantity and the processing together determine the effectiveness of the prescription(处方). Compared with Western medicine, which has standardised drug production processes and treatment methods, TCM lacks standardisation. The chemical composition and functions of its medicine are still unclear and their effects are unstable. Fortunately, standardisation has improved in recent decades and a number of factories are increasingly producing patented TCM drugs. Another reason why TCM prescription drugs have developed slowly is that it lacks creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year, TCM drug producers tend to make medicine according to prescriptions handed down from the past. That Chinese chemist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her research into malaria(疟疾)treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China’s TCM industry. However, Rome was not built in a day. The current situation cannot be changed within a short time. 33. What does the example of an American swimmer in Paragraph 2 show? A. Westerners know a little about TCM. B. Cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment. C. He was injured in his swimming. D. TCM is very popular among westerners. 34. Why don’t some member countries of WHO recognise Chinese herbal medicine? A. Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases. B. They only approve the practice of acupuncture. C. Western medicine is more effective. D. Medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly. 35. How does the writer feel about the future of TCM? A. Anxious. B. Negative. C. Optimistic. D. Disappointed. 36. What is the best title of the passage? A. The Effectiveness of TCM. B. The Barriers to TCM’s Development. C. The Weakness of TCM. D. The Future of TCM. A 34. D 35. C 36. 根据第二段中“However, westerners only have a little knowledge of TCM. Their understanding of TCM may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage.(然而,西方人对中医知之甚少。他们对中医的理解可能仅限于针灸、拔罐和按摩。)”及下文美国游泳运动员的例子可知,这说明西方人对中医药了解很有限。故选A项。 根据第三段最后一句“TCM is much less popular than Western medicine partly due to the slow development of Chinese herbs.(中医不如西医受欢迎,部分原因是中草药发展缓慢。)” 根据第四段最后一句“Fortunately, standardisation has improved in recent decades and a number of factories are increasingly producing patented TCM drugs.(幸运的是,近几十年来,标准化程度有所提高,许多工厂越来越多地生产中成药。)” D D After hours of working, many people experience significant drops in energy and find themselves in desperate need of a recharge. But instead of grabbing a coffee, it may be more worthwhile to take a short sleep break known as a power nap. A power nap can “provide the refreshment you need if you're struggling to stay alert or haven't had a good night’s sleep,” explains Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist. A power nap “gives people the chance to rest for a short period of time to boost workplace productivity (生产率),”she says, but they are only beneficial when they are done correctly. How long should a power nap be? Sleep experts say that an effective power nap should only last20-30 minutes to increase alertness throughout the day. According to James Maas, a former professor and chair of psychology at Cornell University who invented the term “power nap” more than 50 years ago, “It's an opportunity to shut your eyes, breathe slowly and recharge.” For most people, 15 minutes should be enough to power through the rest of the work day. However, Maas warns that lengthier naps are counterproductive and even harmful. “Never nap for 60 minutes. If you power nap any time longer than 40 minutes, you’re going to wake up feeling very weak and tired for another hour or so.” Shelby Harris, a clinical psychologist, adds that the best time to take your power nap is between1 p. m. and 3 p. m., because napping any later in the day “can interfere with your sleep at night.” In contrast to coffee, which is likely to “damage your sleep at night and only offer short term energy for about 30 minutes,” Robbins says a power nap is a healthier alternative to improve workplace performance, strengthen memory and boost creativity. Harris adds naps have long-term health benefits too, such as improving your mood and aiding in stress management. “Power naps can reduce accidents and mistakes while also improving attention, alertness, concentration and performance. They can even be used effectively to fight sleepy driving when a short nap is taken just before getting behind the wheel,” she says. However, Rome was not built in a day. The current situation cannot be changed within a short time. 37. What did James Maas suggest about a power nap? A. The best time to nap is from 1 p. m. to 3 p. m. B. The longer you nap, the more refreshed you'll be. C. It's better to be kept within 15 minutes. D. Napping too long does more harm than good. 38. Good power naps have the following benefits except________ A. contributing to our refreshment. B. improving our memory and mood. C. disturbing your sleep at night. If you power nap any time longer than 40 minutes, you’re going to wake up feeling very weak and tired for another hour or so.”(然而,Maas警告说,更长的午睡会适得其反,甚至有害。“千万不要午睡60分钟。如果你午睡超过40分钟,醒来后你会感到非常虚弱和疲倦,持续一个小时左右。”)”可知,James Maas认为长时间的小睡会适得其反,甚至有害,小睡超过40分钟,醒来后会感觉非常虚弱和疲惫,即小睡太久弊大于利。所以James Maas建议小睡时间不要太长。故选D。 【38题详解】 细节理解题。根据第六段“Robbins says a power nap is a healthier alternative to improve workplace performance, strengthen memory and boost creativity.(Robbins说,小睡片刻是提高工作效率、增强记忆力和激发创造力的更健康的选择)”以及第七段“Harris adds naps have long-term health benefits too, such as improving your mood and aiding in stress management.(Harris补充说,午睡也有长期的健康益处,比如改善情绪和帮助管理压力)”和“Power naps can reduce accidents and mistakes while also improving attention, alertness, concentration and performance.(小睡可以减少事故和错误,同时提高注意力、警觉性、注意力和表现)”可知,良好的小睡有助于恢复精力、增强记忆力、提升创造力、改善情绪、帮助有效管理压力等,并未提及会打扰夜间睡眠。 根据第一段中的“But instead of grabbing a coffee, it may be more worthwhile to take a short sleep break known as a power nap.(但与其喝杯咖啡,不如小睡一会儿,这可能更有价值)”可知,在精神状态不佳时小睡一会儿比喝杯咖啡有价值,引出本文的主题,结合第二段中的“A power nap can “provide the refreshment you need if you’re struggling to stay alert or haven’t had a good night’s sleep,” explains Rebecca Robbins, a sleep scientist.(睡眠科学家Rebecca Robbins解释说,小睡可以“在你难以保持清醒或一夜没睡好时,为你提供所需的精神恢复”)”、第三段中的“According to James Maas, a former professor and chair of psychology at Cornell University who invented the term “power nap” more than 50 years ago, “It’s an opportunity to shut your eyes, breathe slowly and recharge.”(50多年前,康奈尔大学前教授兼心理学主席James Maas发明了“小睡”一词,他说:“这是一个闭上眼睛、慢慢呼吸、充电的机会。”)”以及倒数第三段中的“Shelby Harris, a clinical psychologist, adds that the best time to take your power nap is between 1 p. m. and 3 p. m. , because napping any later in the day “can interfere with your sleep at night.”(临床心理学家Shelby Harris补充说,小睡的最佳时间是下午1点到3点之间,因为再晚一点小睡“都会影响你晚上的睡眠”)”可知,在介绍小睡的相关情况时,作者引用了很多专家和研究者所说的话,由此可推知,本文是通过引用别人的话展开文章的。 故选A。 At 40, I fell in love with cycling and joined a local cycling club. I befriended cycling lovers and we often went cycling together. ___41___ I decided to go on a solo (独自的) cycling journey from Singapore to Indonesia. I was anxious to visit his birthplace but I never acted on it until the idea of cycling there came to mind. ___42___ And I decided to go big — make the whole journey across the island and head to the northernmost tip of Indonesia. I made sure I planned my first solo ride around Indonesia well. My whole trip would cover more than 1,600 km. I aimed to cycle around 100 km to 140 km a day, which would take about four to six hours. Possible bicycle breakdowns and accidents needed to be taken into account. ___43___ During the first leg of the journey, I hardly felt tired because I was so driven by my excitement. The locals couldn’t remember the names so I wasn’t sure whether it was my grandfather’s family. ___44___ All the small pieces of the history reminded me of the hard work of my forefathers to find a better life for their later generations. ___45___ Once, I got lost while cycling towards Lake Toba. Luckily, a family of three showed me the right directions. The whole journey was unforgettable. Luckily, a family of three showed me the right directions. C选项“My cycling journey was not without challenges. B On the first day of school this year, Joseph Riley, the principal (校长) of Pocahontas County High School in West Virginia, dropped by the band classroom and told the 38 students that the school had been unable to find a band teacher after the former teacher left over the summer to take a teaching position at a different school. “I said that we'd have to get them into other classes,” Riley said. “When we do our school song that's probably everybody's favorite,” said Jadyn Lane, 17. 29. C In the past, westerners were not familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM), but now it is becoming globally popular. B They only approve the practice of acupuncture. D D After hours of working, many people experience significant drops in energy and find themselves in desperate need of a recharge. 38.
