Every eight students prepared their farming tools—together as a group, which played a key role in developing their ability to work with each other. Then, following a process of farming, we managed to create an excellent environment for the growth of vegetables. Although there were challenges like the hard soil and heavy tools, these could be seen as chances to build up both our bodies and minds. At the end of the day, we students mastered the skill of building cucumber frames(黄瓜架). It seemed easy to make them, but in fact, it was quite difficult to make them stand straight. Although it might be tiring, we enjoyed the simple joy of farming. “There couldn’t be a better chance to enjoy the beauty of farming, which enhanced(增强)my responsibility to value the fruit of others’ labor and improved my farming skills,” said Liu Li, one of my classmates. More amazingly, great influences were seen when it came to students’ daily life. “I began to make sure of the zero waste dinner, and loved planting in my yard,” said another student in my class. All students loved the school trip. Some of us even suggested making a school garden in the empty land so that we could grow our vegetables and enjoy the fruit of the labor. They are more likely to act kindly toward classmates who are different from them. Having many kinds of friends can help kids understand and care more about each other. The study looked at 603 children from schools in the southwestern United States. The children were between 7 and 11 years old. About half of the children were from different racial groups. For the study, the researchers asked the children to name their best friends. They also asked who they thought were the most helpful classmates. The results showed something interesting. Children with more friends of a different gender were often more helpful. For example, if a boy had many girl friends, the girls in his class thought he was kind and helpful. The same thing happened with race. Kids who had friends from other races were more likely to be seen as kind by classmates from different racial groups. The study also found that having friends of a different gender made kids more likely to be kind to classmates from other races. But just having friends of other races did not always help them be kinder to classmates of a different gender—unless they also had friends of that gender. Sonya Xinyue Xiao, one of the researchers, said her own experiences made her want to do the study. “I was the ‘new’ kid during primary school, middle school, and high school,” she said. She wants to keep learning how children grow to be kind. 1. What can we know about the study from Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2? ①Its results    ②How it affects children   ③How people like it   ④Who took part in it A. ②③ B. ①④ C. ②④ D. ①③ 2. Which picture can best show the following students’ kindness according to the study? a. Jack, who only has 10 boy friends of the same race b. Jenny, who only has 10 girl friends of different races c. Lily, who only has 10 boy friends of the same race d. Tom, who has 10 girl friends of different races A. B. C. D. 3. Why does the writer talk about Sonya’s story in the text? A. To tell us how Sonya grew up. B. To show Sonya is a kind person. C. To explain why the study is important. D. To show why Sonya wanted to study children’s kindness. 4. What’s the text mainly about? A. The right ways of choosing friends. B. The importance of friends in our life. C. Why it is important to be kind to others. D. How the kinds of friends affect a child’s kindness. 【答案】1. B 2. C 3. D 4. 根据“A new study shows this: children with friends of a different gender or from other races are kinder.”以及第四段中“But just having friends of other races...that gender.” 根据“Sonya Xinyue Xiao, one of the researchers, said her own experiences made her want to do the study.”可知,因为Sonya自己的经历,才想做这个研究,所以是解释的原因,故选D 4. 主旨大意题。根据“A new study shows this: children with friends of a different gender or from other races are kinder.”可知,文章主要围绕这项研究的发现展开,即讲述了朋友的类型如何影响孩子的善良程度,故选D。 C Are You in a “Fringe Friend” Moment? We’re hiding behind a dining table, waiting for the birthday girl to arrive. The door cracks open. “Surprise!” we shout. When her shock fades, my friend yells, “I thought the party was tomorrow!” My heart sinks as I realize she’d planned her own, separate party—and hadn’t invited me. In that awkward moment, after a decade of knowing her, I had become her fringe friend—a non-essential pal, the person who’s “always welcome but never invited,” a relationship where assumed closeness has quietly faded. Heart-stung as it is, being a fringe friend is a universal experience, according to friendship experts. A study of college students found that most people assume their friendships are mutual, yet only half of them actually are. In a similar vein, people crave quality over quantity—while 75% of adults were satisfied with the number of friends they had, but more than 40% felt they weren’t as close to them as they’d like. Dr. Kirmayer, a clinical psychologist and friendship expert says negative thought patterns are common when you’re a fringe friend: Did I do something wrong? Am I worthy of friendship? “It’s important to, first validate and then normalize those feelings, that is to accept them.” says Kirmayer. “But on the other hand, I find a lot of them stem from misconceptions we have about what’s necessary in order to feel connected.” In fact, there may be some benefits to being a fringe friend. Companionship helps us feel more satisfied with life and protects us against mental and physical health problems, at the same time, social relationships impose norms and expectations that can have opposite effect, says Kirmayer. For example, you might think you need to attend every group hang or risk not getting another invite; Or you may agree to all your pal’s inconvenient requests so they know you have their back. But these “shoulds, musts, and have-tos” may increase pressure and feelings of shame when we fail to behave in the way that’s expected. Cue the first benefit of being a fringe friend: you are not beholden to anyone’s expectations. It’s nice to not have somebody depend on you. It doesn’t feel like you are rejecting anyone.” Embracing your fringe friend era also gives you the space and time to invest in other areas of your life, says Levine, including new hobbies, self-care routines or family bonds. Meg Foster, a 22-year-old graduates had her own reflections after her close friend in high school “forgot” to invite her to the wedding. This experience gave her time and confidence to try new things—pottery, cycling, making bread—that she wouldn’t have otherwise had. She also had zero fear of being judged for any of it. “There is a lot of freedom in anonymity.” As long as you are not being mistreated, it’s perfectly fine, necessary even, to be a fringe friend, says Jackson, a relational health educator and the author of Fighting for Our Friendship. Becoming aware of emotional and physical distance from others can help you reflect on what you want and need from friendships. Are you spending time in spaces that feel nourishing and meaningful? What do you feel comfortable telling others about yourself? Are you craving emotional bonds or shared experiences? This information can help you diversify your social relationships, says Kirmayer, which is a relatively easy way to meet different people who could potentially turn into close friends. Studies suggest that people who have fringe friends—sociologists call them “weak ties”—feel happier and more connected that those who have fewer of them. 1. The classroom of the future will surely not be the same as the classroom of today. So what will the future classroom be like? Let’s try to find it out. ②To start with, facing the blackboard will be a thing of the past. Students will take classes by looking at their touch-screen(触摸屏的)desks. And doing homework, taking down notes, and taking tests will be just a click away(点击鼠标即可). The walls of the classroom will also be filled with real-time screens for students and teachers to show any information they want. ③In the coming years, another technology called metaverse(元宇宙) will make learning more exciting. Metaverse is a 3D virtual(虚拟的)world where people can meet, play, and work with others through digital avatars(数字化身). In the metaverse, people can do things like going to the mall, attending a concert or buying virtual clothing. The only difference is that they’ll be doing all these in a virtual environment. Teachers and students can get into a virtual classroom, while in real life, they may be sitting on the sofa at home. The experience will be like being in an actual classroom. Students can also “visit” historical sites, see the real geography of the planet, take tours through international universities or research labs, and much more. ④Besides, the classroom of the future holds several learning styles for students. They will be given the freedom to learn things in the way they want. This includes learning through video lectures. Everyone moves at their own pace(节奏), with teachers guiding them along the way. This practice will help students learn faster and have better results. 1. What might happen according to the second paragraph? A. Students won’t need to take tests. B. Students won’t need to do their homework. C. There will be no desks in the classroom. D. There will be no blackboard in the classroom. 2. What can’t people do in the metaverse according to the passage? A. Enjoy the smell of beautiful flowers. B. Attend a famous singer’s concert. C. Take classes in world-famous universities. D. Tour around the world on their sofa. 3. What does the passage mainly tell us? A. How the metaverse will change our life. B. How the classroom will change in the future. C. How virtual classrooms will become popular. D. how students will learn at their own pace 4. How is the passage organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2,…) A. B. C. D. 【答案】1. D 2. A 3. B 4. But now it is different. Know More:In the past, people connected with friends in simple ways. ●meet friends face-to-face. ●go to their friends’ homes to play or chat. ●meet at places like parks or small shops. ●talk and have a good time together. With the development of technology, people’s lives have changed a lot. Today, more young people like to connect with their friends online better. They think it is a good way to connect with their friends. However, some people think that connecting with friends online may make them lose their real-world friendships. Do you agree with it? Here are some ideas. Agree Disagree Technology hurts friendships. When I communicate with a friend online, it’s not easy to understand what he or she really means and feels. We might think our friends are happy while they’re upset and angry. A friend might send a text message as a joke. But our feelings might be bad because we think he’s serious. Hi, I’m Jack. In fact, technology doesn’t hurt friendships at all. Instead, it can make them stronger. For example, my best friends live in California where I used to live. The last time I met them in person was three years ago. But I talk to them online every weekend. It feels like they’re right here with me. Without technology, we can’t be so close friends. According to experts(专家), connecting with friends online is not enough to build true friendships. Spending time together face-to-face is quite important, especially when people are in trouble. During hard times, people don’t need someone who likes their pictures or posts on social media. What they really need is someone who can offer them help. 1. The purpose of the activity was to give us a chance to experience labor and improve our skills. We were excited when we heard the news. Guided by our teachers, we took part in the activity. The teachers thought the idea was quite great. 1. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? A. The activity is done in groups. B. The students don’t have any challenges. C. The cucumber frames are easy to build. D. The tools are not useful to the students. 2. What can we predict(预测)from the end of the passage? A. Students may enjoy the fruit on the farm. B. More farming activities will be organized. C. There may be a vegetable garden in the school. D. Teachers may build a fruit garden in the school. 3. What does the passage mainly tell us? A. Students prepare their farming tools. B. Students master the skill of building cucumber frames. C. Students value the fruit of others’ labor. D. Students learn a lot from the meaningful farm experience. B A new study shows this: children with friends of a different gender(性别)or from other races(种族)are kinder. C Are You in a “Fringe Friend” Moment? 1. Which of the following describes a fringe friend? A. Mary invites Amy home weekly after solving their misunderstandings. B. Lily and Tony greet politely but never go to each other’s private events. C. Jenny is often invited but she rarely invites her friends home or to parties. D. Jane and Ann often attend events together though their hobbies are different. 2. What does the underlined word “validate” probably mean? A. hide B. deepen C. question D. recognize 3. We can learn that being a fringe friend ________. A. is exempt from all social norms and expectations B. is necessary for people to meet potential best friends C. helps gain deeper emotional bonds with close friends D. provides more possibilities to focus on personal growth 4. The purpose of the passage is ________. A. to encourage everyone to meet more fringe friends B. to criticize those who make others feel like fringe friends C. to help readers understand fringe friendship and its value D. to call for social attention to solve fringe friends’ troubles D ①With the development of technology, education is changing. 2. Their initial goal was simple: to survive the war. Every day was a struggle, filled with fear and uncertainty. 1.
