From prehistoric villages in Scotland to Emperor Qin’s terra-cotta warriors in China, here are some of the most impressive archaeological sites you can explore and puzzle over.
Lascaux Cave Paintings, France
In the region of southwestern France lies the Lascaux cave system, where some of the world’s best-preserved Paleolithic cave paintings can be found. Nearly 20,000 years old, these images and engravings (雕刻) feature animals as well as abstract designs. Since 1963, the site has been off-limits to visitors to prevent worsening. However, a team of scientists have recreated this UNESCO World Heritage Site with advanced technology and you are able to have a specially arranged visit with prehistoric cave experts.
Skara Brae, Scotland
The ancient stone village of Skara Brae stands on a coast in Scotland’s islands, just one of many destinations you’ll visit on this trip to the United Kingdom. Settled about 5,000 years ago, it is also one of the best-preserved Neolithic sites in Europe. The ruins consist of a series of stone homes where nearly everything remains undamaged. This once-developed community of farmers, hunters and craftsmen was mysteriously deserted around 2500 BC.
The City of Tikal, Guatemala
Tikal is home to the ruins of a powerful Maya city that flourished (繁荣) from around AD 300 to 800. Located in the depths of the Guatemalan rainforest, this site was once inhabited by more than 60,000 people and covered an area of at least 47 square miles, making it one of the largest pre-Columbian cities. On this trip, you’ll explore a variety of Tikal’s unearthed structures, such as its palaces, temples and ball courts. But archaeologists still don’t have any clues as to the cause of Tikal’s decline.
1. What do we know about Lascaux Cave Paintings?
A. It has been recreated and allows for free visit.
B. It is always open to the public with limited access.
C. It only features engravings of animals’ images.
D. It is listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
2. What do Skara Brae and The City of Tikal have in common?
A. They can date back to 5,000 years ago.
B. They once experienced rise and fall.
C. They consist of a variety of different structures.
D. They are well protected by the local people.
3. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A news report. B. A science textbook.
C. A travel magazine. D. An academic article.

At just 20 years old, Nick Griggs from Northern Ireland has become one of Europe’s most promising athletes. The young runner has won two European Under-20 Championship gold medals and now aims to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Like many athletes, Griggs found inspiration from a sporting legend. “Watching Usain Bolt at the 2012 London Olympics changed everything,” he recalled. “I cheered loudly when he won the 100 meters in 9.63 seconds. That moment made me dream of becoming an Olympic medalist.”
Though starting as a sprinter (短跑运动员) and playing multiple sports including football, Griggs discovered his true talent after joining Mid-Ulster Athletics Club at 14. His coach quickly noticed the teenager’s strong discipline (自制力), often arriving first for morning runs and staying late to improve his techniques. Changing to long-distance running proved successful — within two years, he won gold in the 3,000 meters at the 2021 European Under-20 Championships.
His success didn’t stop there. In 2023, he helped Ireland win gold at the European U20 Cross Country Championships and claimed individual bronze (铜牌). Then, just last November, Griggs set a new parkrun world record, completing the 5-km course at Victoria Park in Belfast in 13 minutes and 44 seconds beating the previous record by one second.
Behind these successes lie strict training routines. Griggs runs over 100 kilometers weekly, combining track workouts with hill training. “Some days I feel exhausted,” he admits, “but thinking of standing on the Olympic platform keeps me going.” His teammates describe him as “the most focused athlete in the gym”, always completing extra main exercises after regular sessions.
With the 2028 Olympics approaching, when he’ll be 23, experts believe Griggs’s steady progress could make him as a strong medal hope. “Every race teaches me something new,” says the determined runner. “My Olympic dream that started in 2012 continues to guide my training.”
4. What inspired Griggs’s Olympic dream?
A. Advice from his coach. B. His parents’ being athletes.
C. Winning a school competition. D. A famous sprinter’s Olympic victory.
5. Which of the following is the correct order of the events in Griggs’s life?
a. Griggs claimed individual bronze.
b. Griggs won gold in the 3,000 meters.
c. Griggs set a new parkrun world record.
d. Griggs joined the Mid-Ulster Athletics Club.
A. c-b-a-d. B. c-b-d-a. C. d-b-a-c. D. d-c-a-b.
6. Which of the following best describes Griggs?
A. Self-controlled. B. Patient. C. Adventurous. D. Easygoing.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. A Promising Runner with Determination
B. Nick Griggs: A New Star in Sprinting
C. The Training Secrets of a Runner
D. Teamwork: Break Records in Competitions
D 5. C 6. A 7. A

C
Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管) , including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. She says, “While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain.”
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results.
Older people can beef up their brain as well. Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of seniors aged from 70 to 79. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for seniors should involve some complexity (复杂). Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or Tai Ji, helps open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time.
For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as three hours of exercise a week.
8. What do we know from paragraph 1?
A. The brain needs special mental exercise. B. The more exercise, the bigger the brain.
C. Exercise helps the brain develop better. D. Exercise makes us stronger and happier.
9. What does the underlined “beef up” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Organise. B. Improve. C. Relax. D. Rescue.
10. How can 3 hours of proper exercise a week help?
A. Lengthen the age from 70 to 79. B. Increase the heart rate of babies.
C. Benefit seniors’ short-term memory. D. Open up memory paths for students.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To offer advice on how to do exercise. B. To introduce ways to change the brain.
C. To give tips on how to raise test scores. D. To encourage exercise for brain benefit.
C 9. B 10. C 11. D
根据第一段中的“Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development.(医生们开始发现越来越多的信息表明运动和大脑发育之间存在联系。)”可知,医生发现运动与大脑发育之间存在着联系,结合下文的“Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管) , including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better.(俄勒冈健康与科学大学的科学家Judy Cameron研究大脑发育。根据她的研究,运动似乎可以使血管,包括大脑中的血管,更强壮,更充分地发育。)”可知,运动可以使包括大脑中的血管在内的血管能更充分地发育,由此可知,从第一段中我们可以了解到的是运动有助于大脑更好地发育。故选C项。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第二段中的“The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active.(运动对大脑发育的影响甚至可以在婴儿身上看到。那些需要大量运动和体力活动的婴儿比那些体力活动较少的婴儿表现出更大的大脑发育。)”可知,运动对大脑发育的影响甚至可以在婴儿身上看到,根据划线短语前的“Older people can”与其后的“their brain as well.”可知,此处讲述的应是运动老人的大脑也有影响,结合下文中的“Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of seniors aged from 70 to 79. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week.(来自11所大学的科学家对一组年龄在70岁至79岁之间的老年人进行了研究。他们的研究表明,每周只运动三小时,短期记忆力就会提高40%。)”可知,研究发现,每周只运动三小时,年龄在70岁至79岁之间的老年人的短期记忆力就会提高40%,由此可知,运动有助于增强老人的大脑,所以划线短语的意思与“增强”意义相近。故选B项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of seniors aged from 70 to 79. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week.(来自11所大学的科学家对一组年龄在70岁至79岁之间的老年人进行了研究。他们的研究表明,每周只运动三小时,短期记忆力就会提高40%。)”可知,对年龄在70岁至79岁之间的老年人的研究表明,每周只运动三个小时,短期记忆就会提高40%,由此可知,运动有利于老年人的短期记忆。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据尾段中的“For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as three hours of exercise a week.(对大多数人来说,任何增加心率的体育活动都是有益的。主要目标是增加大脑的血液流动。你的大脑可以从每周3小时的运动中受益。)”可知,任何增加心率的体育活动都是有益的,大脑可以从每周3小时的运动中受益,由此可知,本文主要介绍的是通过适当的体育活动能够促进大脑功能的发育,所以本文的目的是鼓励人们为了大脑健康而进行运动。故选D项。
D
When Deirdre Loughridge first began teaching classes on music technology in 2012, there was a lot of talk about how computers were “dehumanizing” music. The general thought among her students was that computers could not make music.
But over the years, Loughridge noticed a shift in this attitude. “When I started teaching, it was very common to be surprised and disturbed by the idea that a computer could make music,” she said. “But five years later, that started to seem like a much more common idea for students.”
With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), there’s been an increasing number of conversations surrounding AI and art, and whether the work we’re enjoying is from a human or a machine. But the answer, Loughridge says, is not always so simple, at least not when it comes to music. After all, a computer-generated piece in the style of Chopin was created by human programmers and Chopin composed with a piano that is also sort of a machine.
This is the example Loughridge uses to open her upcoming book Sounding Human. The December release was inspired by the shift in attitude Loughridge has seen over her career, and explores how the human and machine have been seen as both oppositional (对抗的) forces and working pairs.
“The book is trying to get out of this division of human and machine to explore how they relate to each other, and what it opens up for us to think about those relationships rather than get stuck on a human or machine question,” she said.
In the book, Loughridge explores this debate and how it played out from 1740 until 2020, starting with the emergence of an android-like (像人形机器人的) device that plays the flute (长笛) and ending with musicians experimenting with machine learning.
The subject matter is particularly poignant (引人深思的) as there’s more debate around AI. The conversation has evolved even over the last year, Loughridge said, with more people viewing the use of this type of technology as either “good” or “bad”. But looking through the history in her book can provide greater context to these conversations.
12. Why does the author mention the example of Chopin?
A. To explain what machine-generated art is.
B. To introduce the history of music composition.
C. To praise his skills of using pianos to create music.
D. To show the interaction between the human and machine.
13. What inspired Deirdre Loughridge to write Sounding Human?
A. The increasing debate about AI and art.
B. The rise of AI in music.
C. Students’ changing views on computerized music.
D. Her shifted opinion on AI and art during her career.
14. What is the main focus of Sounding Human?
A. Debating the morality of AI in music.
B. Analyzing the compositions of Chopin.
C. Exploring the evolution of music technology.
D. Breaking the boundary between human and technology.
15. Which of the following can best describe many people’s viewpoints on AI according to Loughridge?
A. Unchanged. B. One-sided.
C. Old-fashioned. D. Refreshing.
D 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据文章第三段“After all, a computer-generated piece in the style of Chopin was created by human programmers and Chopin composed with a piano that is also sort of a machine.(毕竟,一首Chopin风格的电脑生成作品是由人类程序员创作的,而Chopin则是用一种也算是机器的钢琴创作的)”可知,作者提及Chopin的例子是为了说明人类与机器在音乐创作中的相互作用。
根据文章第四段“This is the example Loughridge uses to open her upcoming book Sounding Human. The December release was inspired by the shift in attitude Loughridge has seen over her career, and explores how the human and machine have been seen as both oppositional (对抗的) forces and working pairs.(这就是Loughridge用来开启她即将出版的新书《Sounding Human》的例子。这本12月出版的书灵感来源于Loughridge在职业生涯中观察到的态度转变,探讨了人类和机器如何被视为既是对抗的力量又是合作的伙伴)”可知,Deirdre Loughridge写《Sounding Human》的灵感来源于她在教学过程中观察到的学生对计算机音乐态度的转变。故选C项。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第五段““The book is trying to get out of this division of human and machine to explore how they relate to each other, and what it opens up for us to think about those relationships rather than get stuck on a human or machine question,” she said. (她说:“这本书试图摆脱人类和机器的这种划分,去探索它们是如何相互关联的,以及这为我们思考这些关系打开了什么,而不是陷入人类或机器的问题中。”)”可知,《Sounding Human》这本书的主要焦点是打破人类与技术之间的界限,去探索它们之间的关系,而不是简单地纠结于“人类或机器”的问题。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“The conversation has evolved even over the last year, Loughridge said, with more people viewing the use of this type of technology as either “good” or “bad”. But looking through the history in her book can provide greater context to these conversations.(Loughridge说,即使在过去一年里,这种讨论也在不断发展,越来越多的人将这种技术的使用视为“好”或“坏”。但浏览她书中的历史可以为这些对话提供更广阔的背景。)”可知,Loughridge认为,很多人对AI的看法是片面的,他们倾向于将AI的使用简单地归类为“好”或“坏”,而没有深入思考AI与人类之间的复杂关系。。故选B项。

根据上文“According to the US Department of Education, there has been a big decrease in the number of courses that teach typing in the classroom.(根据美国教育部的数据,在课堂上教授打字的课程数量大幅减少)”可知,教授打字的课程数量大幅减少。选项F“That’s despite a big increase in the use of technology in classrooms.(尽管教室里技术的使用大幅增加,但这种情况还是发生了)”表明尽管教室里技术的使用大幅增加,但打字课程却减少了,形成对比。故选F。
根据空前“The department said that in 2000, 44% of students had taken a typing course before finishing high school.(教育部称,2000年,44%的学生在高中毕业前上过打字课)”可知,上文提到2000年44%的学生在高中毕业前上过打字课程。选项E“However, by 2019, only 2.5% of students had taken such a course.(然而,到2019年,只有2.5%的学生上过这类课程)” 通过“However”转折,给出2019年的数据,体现出打字课程参与率的下降,与前文对应。故选E。
根据下文“It involves using all fingers to type without looking at the keyboard. However, young people today often lack this ability.(它指的是使用所有手指打字,且无需看键盘。然而,如今的年轻人往往缺乏这种能力)”可推测,空处需要指出“this ability”。选项G“In older generations, touch typing was considered an important skill.(在老一辈人中,盲打被视为一项重要技能)”中的“touch typing”即下文的“it”以及“this ability”。
根据上文“Some teachers think young people’s typing speeds might cause them problems when they’re writing long assignments at university, or working in a job that needs them to type a lot.(一些老师认为,年轻人的打字速度可能会在他们在大学写长篇作业,或者从事一份需要大量打字的工作时给他们带来麻烦)”可知,年轻人打字速度可能在大学写长篇作业或从事大量打字工作时带来问题。选项B“It might not be needed for all jobs.(也许并非所有工作都需要(快速打字能力))”与上文内容形成转折,指出不是所有工作都需要快速打字的能力,自然引出下文“But experts still say being able to touch type can help people find better job opportunities.(但专家们仍然表示,能够盲打可以帮助人们找到更好的工作机会)”。

My mom was a kind woman. She had an unusual view on helping others that I didn’t really understand until one cold, winter day when we picked up my brothers at school.
“Who is that child?” Mom pointed at a skinny, angry-looking girl across the street. “She doesn’t even have a coat. It’s freezing!” “That’s Becky Ingler. She always looks mad like that,” I replied. Becky didn’t have a father, and everybody laughed at her. “I’ll visit her tomorrow,” Mom said.
The next day, we went to the Inglers’ house. A tired-looking woman appeared, and Mom smiled, “Hello, Mrs. Ingler. I’m just visiting some of our neighbors.” Once inside, I noticed there was a rusty coal stove and a big messy bed. Mom looked at each of the children carefully.
As we left, Mom told Mrs. Ingler she would visit them again soon.
Mom’s old sewing machine (缝纫机) worked for two days and nights to turn some shabby clothes into stylish winter coats. She said to me, “I need your help to send these coats to the Inglers this afternoon.”
“Wow!” I said. “They’re lucky to get these.”
“No,” said Mom as she faced me. “We’re the lucky ones to be able to help them. We must make sure these coats are given freely, without the Inglers paying a price for them.” I didn’t understand what Mom meant. Mom explained, “I don’t want these coats to cost them their pride or dignity (尊严). We can’t show we are somehow better than they are.”
I asked Mom what we should do if they refused the coats. Mom smiled and said, “I have a plan in mind.”

As we left, I noticed Becky examining the coats happily.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Later that day, we want to the Inglers’ house again. “I know this might be an improper request, but I hope you won’t mind,” Mom smiled at Mrs. Ingler. “We have some winter coats here, and I just wondered if you might help deal with them. It seems a shame to donate them.” Mom lifted a beautiful coat out of the bag. Mrs. Ingler looked at the coat, and then glanced at Becky. “I’d be happy to help.” Mrs. Ingler gave my mother a knowing look. “Thank you.” “You’re doing us a favor,” Mom smiled.
As we left, I noticed Becky examining the coats happily. She lifted her head and smiled al Mom and me. She looked so happy and satisfied. It seemed that she became a Becky I hadn’t seen before. And we smiled back. Over the years, I thought about how Mom accomplished that act of kindness, and about her gift for caring about others. What Mom did was truly an act of kindness. I will follow in Mom’s footsteps and care for others truly.

From prehistoric villages in Scotland to Emperor Qin’s terra-cotta warriors in China here are some of the most impressive archaeological sites you can explore and puzzle over.

With the 2028 Olympics approaching when he’ll be 23, experts believe Griggs’s steady progress could make him as a strong medal hope. “Every race teaches me something new,” says the determined runner. “My Olympic dream that started in 2012 continues to guide my training.”

A Organise. B. Improve. C. Relax. D. Rescue.

D. Refreshing.
