The Pain of Forgetting My First Language
No one prepared me for the heartbreak of losing my first language. It doesn’t feel like the sudden, sharp pain of losing someone you love, but 1 a dull ache that builds slowly until it becomes a part of you. My first language, Cantonese, is the only one I share with my parents. As it 2 from my memory, I also lose my ability to communicate with them.
I was born in New York City and spent most of my childhood in Brooklyn speaking Cantonese. It was (and still is) the only language that my parents understand. In the 1980s, they 51 to the U.S. from China’s Guangdong Province. The jobs they found in kitchens and garment factories came with long hours, 3 them no time to learn English.
When I first learned English in elementary school, my parents encouraged me to be excellent in English class because they believed it to be the key to success in America. It was an easy decision to suppress (抑制) Cantonese in an 4 to blend in and to feel more American.
Over time, Cantonese played a smaller 5 in my life. It didn’t occur to me that my Cantonese was regressing until it was too late. First, my directions were off. I started saying jau, which means “right,” when I meant to say zo, which means “left.” Then, the names of colors started to 6 me. “I like your green dress”, I said to my mom in Cantonese once. “This is blue, silly!” she laughed. Eventually, I struggled to construct sentences altogether, often 7 words or failing completely to recall them.
It’s deeply frustrating to be unable to express thoughts that I so eagerly want to share with my parents. We have no heart-to-heart conversations or mutual understanding. My heart aches, knowing that there’s a distance between us that may never fully be 8 . My parents are in their 60s now. There’s no 9 the fact that we have a limited amount of time together. So I made it a goal to relearn Cantonese and, ultimately, rebuild the relationship with my parents, for I don’t want the language barrier to disconnect us anymore.

On my first day living at the student dormitory, I went downstairs to the convenience store to buy a(n) 2 of chips. I came back five minutes later to buy a Coke. As a joke I said to the cashier, “Long time no see!” She 3 corrected me and said,“ No,you were here five minutes ago.”That was lesson number one in China: Irony does not 4 .
Soon after, a local friend invited me to his house for my first ever lunch in a Chinese home. His father finished eating first, put down his bowl and chopsticks and said to me manman chi(“Eat slowly”). I was 5 . I didn’t realize this was part of Chinese etiquette. I had already studied the language for three years before I came to China, but there was so much I didn’t understand.
Why were people putting food into my rice bowl? Why were people at the table telling me when I could and couldn’t drink my cup of beer? Why was it okay for everyone to spit things out 7 onto the table, but they covered up their mouths with their free hand when using a toothpick to be polite?

And it’s not just the little things. The way I see society, government, and personal relationships has all changed. The culture shock happens when I go back to America.

The most difficult part of a Chinese-Western marriage is the cultural differences. The traditional Chinese culture is 1 on the Confucian philosophy (儒家哲学). Even in a relationship, we are somehow still 7 to our family and relatives. Our partner has to understand it and at least does not oppose it.
My suggestion for the cross-cultural relationship is always trying to put yourself in the other’s shoes; always 8 your partner but making clear your own red lines; showing your interest in the 9 culture and carefully remarking on it and so on.

Imagine meeting a foreigner for the first time but he/she is fluent in your language. There may appear to be no 1 communication barrier. Would you adapt the tone of your voice, or the spacing of pauses in your speech? How about 2 your body language and facial expressions, depending on the background of the person in front of you?
These are just a small part of the changes in behavior that can improve your “cultural intelligence”, or CQ. There is growing evidence that suggests that they are well 3 learning.
“The number one predictor of your success in today’s 4 world is not your IQ, not your resume, and not even your expertise,” writes social scientist David Livermore. “It’s your CQ.”
Much of the research on CQ has been done by Professor Soon Ang with the Nanyang Technological University. In the late 1990s, her job was dealing with the “Y2K bug.” It was a software bug that was feared would bring down the world’s computer networks. Ang put together an international team of programmers to update computer systems in Singapore. They were some of the brightest 5 in the industry. However, Ang soon found that these people just couldn’t work together. Often, 6 members would appear to agree on a solution, but then carry it out in completely different ways. Clearly, it wasn’t a question of language skills or expertise. Instead, she saw that these employees were held back by each other’s cultural differences.
This would lead Ang to work with psychologist P. Christopher Earley. Together they built a theory of CQ. They defined it as “the capability to 7 effectively in a variety of cultural contexts.”
Someone with a low CQ might view everyone else’s behavior through his own cultural lens. If he comes from a more 8 environment, for instance, and notices that his Japanese colleagues are very quiet in a meeting, he may think that they are being unfriendly. In aviation, such cultural differences might cause a(n) 9 in communication between pilots and air traffic controllers. The consequences would be unthinkable.
A person at the top of the scale, meanwhile, might realize that silence is one of the 10 of respect. In Japanese culture, feedback often won’t be given unless it is asked for. As a result, he/she will offer suitable opportunities within the meeting for others to provide their opinions.

How Many Devices Are You Wearing?
The classic bad dream of suddenly realizing you’re naked in public could soon get a futuristic twist: it might involve the 1 of losing not just your modesty but also pass codes. The concept of interactive “smart clothing” that can store data, 2 unlock doors or control a nearby smartphone with gestures has drawn great attention in the past couple of years. For example, Google and Levi’s created a(n) 3 jacket that can operate a smartphone. This and other smart clothes are made with conductive thread and usually require an attached electronic device.
To 4 the need for such devices, researchers at the University of Washington recently took advantage of what they say is a previously unexploited property of conductive thread: its ability to be magnetized (磁化的)—attracted to objects made of iron. Using magnetic instead of electric properties of the thread “may seem like a 5 difference, but it’s what makes this work interesting and exciting”. The new technique allowed the researchers to do something they say is unique among wearables: turn them into 6 devices.
The Washington team magnetized a piece of cloth decorated with conductive thread, giving different parts of the cloth a north or south orientation. This step allowed the researchers to store up to 33 million different 7 —such as pass codes for doors—on a shirt. They also created magnetic gloves that could control a nearby smartphone with gestures.
The clothes still stored data after washing, drying and ironing, but they could not 8 time’s erasers. After about a week, the threads’ magnetic fields had 9 by around 30 percent. The researchers suggest that using custom-made thread designed to hold stronger magnetic fields might work longer. But for now the clothes may be best suited for storing 10 codes, such as those found on hotel key cards or clothing tags in stores.

Go Recycling
No one looking at the state of Earth in 2023 can be in any doubt that we are facing three serious environmental problems: climate problem, loss of biodiversity (生物多样性) and pollution of air, soil and water. To solve the problems, we increase the use of electric cars, 1 greener eating and reduce plastic use. However, sometimes these solutions can be opposite to the expected goals. For instance, creating space for biofuel crops to give off fewer pollutants and greenhouse gases can, in fact, 2 increase the cutting down of trees. That means in most cases solutions aiming at one problem each time are 3 to be effective. And, what is perhaps lacking is a(n) 4 of how interlinked these problems are.
We should realize that a key 5 linking all the three problems is waste. The root cause of global warming is CO2, a waste gas. The seas are polluted by plastic and other waste products. We 6 forests, among other things, to grow more food — much of which goes to waste.
A shocking figure lies at the heart of our special report on our world — of the more than 100 billion tons of things that humans use each year, hardly 10% is recycled. That makes it obvious a full-range war on waste should be paid 7 attention. The situation requires our speedy moving away from the way of thinking — “take, make, throw” — towards a more recyclable one, which means we should begin 8 the products and when they reach the end of their useful lives, they can be recycled.
Solving the three problems calls for a huge transition with joint efforts. Governments must take the lead by introducing laws with the purpose of rewarding green practices, such as the 9 of waste. Industries can reduce, re-use and recycle wherever possible, and 10 themselves with suppliers and the like-minded to realize recyclable business models.

A Letter to My Daughter
I know perhaps you will be surprised to read this: I remember well what it was like to be a (n) 1 . As I watch you prepare for your first day of senior high school, there are a few things I want you to know.
You may be putting yourself under 2 to make sure that everything is perfect for that first day, but I want you to know that there’s no such thing as perfect. I’ve said it before, but it 3 repeating. There is nothing perfect. There is only good enough, but what is most important is believing you’re good enough — just as you are.
Also, remember that you’re not in this boat alone. You’re not the only one facing a new school, new classmates, new teachers, new 4 and new pressures. At some point, everyone else is — or was — where you are right now. I hope you find 5 in that.
There might be some people who will not always be so friendly to you . You will find such people not only in senior high school, but throughout your 6 life . When you are reflecting on a (n) 7 comment someone made on you or an unfriendly glance that came your way, I hope you’ll remember that these behaviours always say more about the giver than the receiver and there will never be a (n) 8 of kind people and genuine smiles in your life. Remember that, too, when you are tempted to be nasty to someone else.
As you go forward into this new chapter in your life, I hope you’ll realize early that we are most often held back by the 9 we put on ourselves — by the stories we tell ourselves about who and what we are. Whenever you’re tempted to say, “I can’t ...” or “I’m not ...” about something you really want to 10 , I hope you’ll change that story — because you can and you are.

Half a life half way around the world
I lived the first two decades of my life in America and the next two in China. It is a strange feeling to know your own country only as a child and to become an adult on foreign 31
I experienced very little culture shock upon arriving in 1998 because I knew very little about China. I had no 1 . Just live and learn. I arrived in China as a college student at Nanjing University.
He wanted to express that just because he was done eating, I should not feel 6 to finish. I thought, “Am I eating too fast? Why does he care about the speed at which I eat?” After they explained it to me, I learned my second important lesson: To learn the language, one has to learn the culture.
Living my adult life in a foreign country has become a life-long learning process.Chinese 8 have now become my own. They are so deeply 9 in my daily routine that I do not think about them. And it’s not just the little things. The way I see society, government, and personal relationships has all changed. The culture shock happens when I go back to America.
Passage 2

G. perspective H. based I. misunderstanding J. independence K. relatives
The most difficult part of a Chinese-Western marriage is the cultural differences. The traditional Chinese culture is 1 on the Confucian philosophy (儒家哲学). However, the Western culture is founded on ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Cultural differences exist in almost every aspect and are therefore reflected in 2 relationship and marriage.
It is not easy to keep a Chinese-Western relationship, for cultural differences may result in 3 . From the traditional Chinese 4 , marriage is a relationship involving family, friends and relatives. In contrast, Westerners’ marriages recognize the 5 and privacy of the couple.
That is why Westerners sometimes cannot understand why we Chinese need to support our 6 if we are asked to do so. Chinese people need to maintain their “face” and “relations”.
There have been more and more cross-cultural marriages 10 recently. I would like to take this chance to sincerely wish them the very best in their love journeys.

— Ave, Los Angeles
Males face 6 pressures and hurdles to talking about their struggles
Not only on social media but also in the real world, males are taught differently than females about how to think about their struggles. People seem to notice the struggles females face when it comes to body image issues, but it is all too common for them to overlook the struggles that males face. As a result, males are often discouraged from sharing their struggles and are often ignored when they do make 7 such struggles.
— Devynne, Comets
Some said that following body-positive content can be encouraging.
I find that I encounter more body-positive content than that which is negative. The reason for this, though, 8 on who you follow. When I see body-positive content on social media, I find that it just makes me feel confident about the body I have. Positive content can show you that your body does not 9 you, and that you should not worry about having the smallest waist or biggest muscles. -Alexis, Hanover Horton High School
Teen warning - just remember, social media doesn’t show you the full picture of someone’s life.
In my case, social media has definitely affected the way I feel about myself and my body. Users on these platforms usually post things when they look their best, often neglecting to 10 to us their usual day-to-day appearance. Social media has caused me to feel as if I have to look a certain way at all times of the day, even if it is clear to me that 15-second TikTok clips of attractive users show just that: only 15 seconds of their day

Every year, 1 4 million people die prematurely due to household air pollution. Many die from 2 linked to breathing in smoke from kerosene (煤油), wood and charcoal fires, which are commonly used in the developing world for cooking and heating.
“Household air pollution is one of the world’s greatest public health 3 and it is especially harmful for children,” says Martina Otto, Head of Secretariat of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Here’s a closer look at this issue.
How widespread is household air pollution?
Worldwide, nearly one in three people cook on inefficient stoves or over open fires, 4 in harmful smoke from so-called solid fuels such as wood, charcoal and animal dung.
