There have been many great inventions or things that change the way we live. The first great invention is the one that is still very important today—the wheel. This makes it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances.
For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn’t have to explore much any more. They began to work in order to make life better.
In the second half of the 19th century, many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all play a big part in our daily life today.
The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1946, jet planes in 1939. It was also a time when a new material was first made—Nylon (尼龙), which came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wore.
The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and allowed them to live longer. By the 1960s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.
By this time most people in developed countries had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire (渴望) to explore again. The Earth was known to man but stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia, United States, China and Japan have made their own steps into space.
In 1969, man took his biggest step away from the Earth. Americans first walked on the Moon. This is certainly just a beginning, though. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved music. While most kids played outside in the sun, I felt happy inside my house, practicing my cello (大提琴) for hours. Playing the cello took me to a different world, free from worries. It never felt boring.
After months of practice, the big day arrived—the Alberta Provincial Music Festival. I sat beside my mother and felt nervous. My hands were shaking as I practiced the notes in my mind. My mother encouraged me as my turn was coming.

One day, she told us that our class would put on a play she had written. “I need someone to play the lead role. Does anyone want to try?” she asked. A few hands were raised—mine wasn’t one of them. Mrs. Smith walked up to me and said, “I think you’re perfect for it, but you didn’t raise your hand.”

Working on a team is a good thing. To create a successful team, good communication is the most necessary part for both team members and the leader. The following are some helpful suggestions.

Do you have true friends? Do you want to know better between you and your friends? There are three different kinds of friends; “pest friends”, “guest friends”, and “best friends”.
The first kind of friend is an acquaintance (熟人), and all you usually know about them is their names. You may meet this kind of friend at school, or on the bus, but you don’t miss them when they’re not around. When this kind of friend does something bad, you don’t tell them. That is why they are called “pest friends”.
The second kind of friend could also be called “social partners”. They are closer than acquaintances, but not as close as true friends. You know their names, a little of what they like or dislike, and a little of their family histories; you usually have a few things in common, but you don’t talk about anything deep, such as your wishes or fears (恐惧), and they don’t open up to you how they really feel.
The last kind of friend, the “best friend”, is the one you know the deepest. You’re like family, and know everything about each other. You have no problem staying at each other’s houses, and you share your deepest feelings and thoughts. They will correct you when you’re wrong. They will always care about you, and never do anything on purpose (故意地) to hurt you.

Everything changed when I tried a triathlon (铁人三项) after only two weeks of training. The running part was so difficult that I mostly walked! I have been a fan of Italian traveler Marco Polo since childhood. This hobby later led me to become a tour guide. About 20 years ago, my interest in China was started by a student from Beijing who stayed in my home. We became very good friends and she made me more curious (好奇的) about China. Following that, I found myself interested in The Travels of Marco Polo. So I read it over and over again to understand China.
In 2018, suddenly I wanted to hike (徒步旅行) along the ancient Silk Road. The idea encouraged me to plan a journey from Venice to Beijing. This road passed through 15 countries in three to four years. At first, my children thought it was impossible. However, as they saw the details (细节) of my plan, they changed their ideas.
My journey began on April 26, 2022. For more than two years, I experienced many obstacles: bad weather, tiredness and lonely moments. Along the way, I learned about the history, culture, and traditions of each country I visited. As I hiked along the ancient Silk Road, I was shocked by the changes that our world has experienced.

Life has its ups and downs and people sometimes feel anxious (焦虑的). If the feelings of anxiety become too strong, they can make you unwell. Usually, we might see a doctor or take some medicine to feel better. But it would be helpful to have something to use at home that does not involve (涉及) medicine. So, we made a robotic cushion (抱枕) to help manage anxiety.
Our team was made up of scientists from several fields. We built a few different robotic cushions, and each one offered a different calming experience, like the feeling of breathing, a heartbeat, and one of them even had colourful lights inside. We asked people to try them out and tell us which they liked the best. Most people liked the cushion that felt like it was breathing. So, we decided to work more on that one.
For our final cushion, we made it bigger so it was easier to hug. We made a robotic part that could push air in and out of a balloon inside the cushion, to control the “breathing”. We did this because slow breathing helps people feel calmer.
Now, we wanted to see if our cushion really could help with anxiety, so we did a test. The test had to do three things: make people feel anxious, check their anxiety levels, and compare the effect of the cushion to something else.
We made people feel anxious by having them do some difficult math problems in front of others. Afterwards, we asked them to score their anxiety levels from one to ten. To see how well the cushion worked, we put people into three groups. Group A used the breathing cushion, Group B tried meditating (冥想), and Group C just sat quietly without anything to help with their anxiety. After 10 minutes, we asked them to score their anxiety levels again.
We found that people who hugged the breathing cushion had much less anxiety than those who just sat quietly. And we saw that meditation also helped people reduce their anxiety.
Meditation can be difficult because it needs attention and practice, but hugging a cushion is easy! And, you could hug the cushion while doing other things. By doing more research like this, we can find ways to help people who need different ways to feel better. What do you think? Would you like to have a breathing cushion to hug when you’re worried?
1.What is the final cushion like?
A.It uses air to make the sound of a heartbeat.
B.It has a robotic part to make it “breathe”.
C.It comes in all shapes and sizes.

Water is important to all living things, but some areas in the world are short of water a lot. So we should try to protect and save water.
A group of students from Zhejiang University have successfully developed an “air hand-washing machine”. The machine uses an infrared ray induction system (红外线感应系统), which can feel the presence of our hands. If it feels there are hands, the water with the air will come from the tap. And it has been proven that it is nearly as effective as traditional hand-washing. It uses only ten percent of the water that regular hand-washing does. The students have even set up a company to introduce the product to the public.
Li Qizhang, a member of the team that developed the machine, told a reporter that a model of their machine had already been placed in a classroom building at the university and that it worked very well.
In 2014, a student called Chen Puyang first thought of the idea while he was washing his hands. Washing one’s hands uses a lot of water, Chen thought. Would it be possible to replace the water with air? Others may not give the question a second thought. However, for Chen and Li, who were studying fluid mechanics (流体力学) at the time, this was considered to be an excellent idea.
Soon, Chen, Li and several classmates started on the project. After a year of research, the team came up with a gravity-driven (重力驱动) hand-washing machine successfully.

Do you want to make your life more interesting? Do you want anyone to encourage you to go through the hard time? Do you want anyone to share happiness with you? Do you want anyone to give you advice when you don’t know what to do? If your answers are “Yes”, then make friends. Here is some advice for you.
Let others know you. It takes time to make friends. No one can know you well when you meet for the first time. Give you and the new friend enough time to learn about each other well.
Differences are important. Some people may think it’s necessary for friends to be the same. However, it’s not always true. Having similarities is nice, but having differences may bring you a lot of surprises.
Friends’ friends can be your friends. This is one of the best ways to make new friends. You don’t have to think of ways to know new people. Have a party and ask your friends to bring their friends. Then you may make some new friends.
If they’re important, let them know. People want to feel they are important. Show your friends that they are important to you and they will do the same. When they know you need them, they will feel happier and be friendlier to you.
Good friends make a difference to you, so try to make more good friends in your life. Remember, it’s never too late to make new friends or contact (联系) your old friends.

Free time is a great chance for teenagers to have fun. But what about free time when parents are around? Some teenagers want to play freely without parents watching over them, while parents and experts might think differently.
Lin Tao, a middle school student, believes teenagers should be able to play freely. “Last time I played with my parents nearby, I had a knot in my stomach and was unable to have a really good time,” Lin says. “My friend Chen Xiaoxin has the same kind of experiences. Once, he went out to play with his classmates, and everyone felt uncomfortable because his mother was watching.”
Wang Min, Lin Tao’s mother, thinks playtime needs parents’ supervision (监督). She says, “People often say I like to restrain my child, but that’s not true. I’m just worried he might get into trouble. Some kids might have a bad effect on him, and some games like LARP (剧本杀) might lead him the wrong way. He could even lose himself into the stories and have a hard time getting back to real life.”
Mr. Ma, a social studies doctor, says it’s easy to understand that teenagers want freedom. Playing freely helps them learn to be independent (独立的). Parents can give them more space. They don’t have to watch them all the time. But teenagers should know all the details (细节) about the activities before they go to play. Then they can talk with their parents and decide together if they can go out to play by themselves.
In my view, both teenagers’ freedom and parents’ supervision are important. They need free time, and they also need parents’ proper (恰当的) supervision.

When my name was finally called, I took a deep breath and walked on stage. I carefully put my cello in place and began to play. The deep, rich sound filled the room, and everyone watched quietly. Then, my finger slipped and hit the wrong note. I kept playing as if nothing had happened, but inside, I was worried. I thought to myself, “I’ve just lost my chance.”
As soon as I finished, the audience cheered loudly. My mother said that I did well, but I felt disappointed about my mistake. As the last performer finished, the teacher began to announce the winner. I lost hope.
To my surprise, the teacher called me again, saying, “You may now come to the stage and accept your award.” I couldn’t believe it! My hard work finally paid off. When I received my award, one of the teachers told me, “Don’t be so hard on yourself. We all make mistakes.”

I used to be very shy, so I usually just listened to other people’s conversations. My teacher, Mrs. Smith, always encouraged me to communicate with others.
Me, the lead? Was she crazy? Mrs. Smith continued, “I was thinking of you when I created the role! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you.” Suddenly, I thought it was time to throw away my shyness and show the world who I really was. I looked at Mrs. Smith and said, “OK, I’ll try.”
After five months of practicing, the big day finally arrived. My knees shook and my heart beat like I’d just run a mile. “It doesn’t matter how the performance will be,” said Mrs. Smith, as if reading my thoughts. “You’ve already shown yourself how wonderful you are. That’s the most important thing.”

The smart watch, a new product, is changing our lifestyle. More and more people prefer to wear a smart watch in their daily lives. And there are also many different brands (品牌) to choose from. Here are some reasons why people choose a smart watch.
First of all, it can tell the time like a usual watch. But the most important difference is that a smart watch can also be connected to (连接) your mobile phone. You are able to use it to answer the phone call, while a traditional watch can never do that. Besides, the smart watch looks fascinating. It’s very popular among teenagers because it’s cool. Thirdly, now many people have known the importance of health. They play sports every day to keep healthy. It’s helpful to know how far they have run or how many steps they have got with a smart watch. The watch shows the results every day and they’ll know whether they have achieved their goals or not.

Have you ever thought about talking with people working in space? This is something Ezekiel Wheeler from the US began to try when he was 8. Now, as a homeschooled 13-year-old boy, he made a device (设备) by himself to help others speak to astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS).
When Wheeler was young, he was very interested in science. When he turned 8, he decided he wanted to talk with the ISS using ham radio (业余无线电).
To make this happen, a ham radio was not enough. He also needed a satellite tracker (卫星跟踪器). He made his own tracker with a 3-meter-long antenna (天线), and two more small trackers made of Lego. “I wanted to use a fun, practical way to teach students about electrical (电机) engineering,” said Wheeler. So he 3D-printed a desktop satellite tracker.
The program helped Wheeler win second prize in the 2024 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, one of the top middle school STEM competitions in the US.
Wheeler wasn’t only interested in talking to the astronauts himself. He wanted to let his friends talk to them too. For him, science is everything. “I like to face challenges (挑战),” he said. “I really want to get a result that will work.”

Working on a team is a good thing. To create a successful team, good communication is the most necessary part for both team members and the leader. The following are some helpful suggestions.
Don’t criticize other people. When someone on your team does something wrong, don’t criticize him. You can help him to find out the reasons and then help him to solve the problem. Criticizing your team members too often may make them keep away from you. As a result, you may feel lonely.
Think about other people’s ideas carefully. When someone tells you about his ideas, you should think about them carefully, no matter how silly they may seem. This shows you are interested in his ideas and makes him feel good.
Listen to other people actively. When someone is speaking to you, you need to listen to him actively. If you’re unclear about something, you should ask him about it. By doing this, you can clear any confusion (困惑) before moving on.
Share your ideas with other people. When you have a new idea, talk about it with your team members. This helps to improve the idea. Besides, it also helps to improve your relationships with your team members.

Jimmy: I’m a student. I hate talking about my feelings, but sometimes it really hurts to keep all my bad feelings inside. A few people say I can talk to them about anything. But whenever I tell anyone about my problems, it makes me think that I’m sharing a vulnerable (脆弱的) side of me. I keep thinking about what the other person thinks of me. What can I do?
Luna: I know how that feels, Jimmy. I once almost reached breaking point with all my feelings kept inside. One day, I talked to a friend. After talking with her, I was worried. I thought she would laugh at me. However, in the following days, she treated me the same, and I knew it was OK to open up to someone sometimes.
Susan: Whenever I hear someone say “I don’t want to trouble others with my bad feelings.”, I feel very sorry for them. Sharing feelings is important to everyone.
We all have our pest, guest and best friends. We should value (重视) all friendships and remember, all best friends start out as just acquaintances.

B.Feng Zhongfan’s parents never ask him about whom he plays with.
C.Liu Xiang will join in the activities without knowing anything about them.
D.Xie Hao told his parents where to go and whom to play with before playtime.
4.What’s the main idea of the text?
A.Teenagers need free time to be independent.
B.Parents should keep an eye on their children all the time.
C.Teenagers can’t play LARP without parents’ supervision.
D.Teenagers need both freedom and parents’ proper supervision.
