Perfectly Pan-fried Tofu
The familiar smell of garlic, soy sauce, and onion filled the air as I opened my lunch bag to see what my mom had packed for me. On any other occasion, I would have been delighted to eat my mom’s braised (炖) pan-fried tofu: a Korean dish that I often ate for dinner. But not today, the day a nice girl had invited me, the new girl at school, to sit with her friends during lunch.
“Charis, over here!” My new friend was waving her arms, trying to get my attention.
As I prepared to walk over to the table, memories of elementary and middle school lunch times came back to me. I remembered my embarrassment as my friends would hold their noses, or simply run away from me when I brought homemade Korean food. I remembered how my embarrassment shifted to anger when I complained about the smell to my mom.
I had argued with my mom that I wanted “normal” food for lunch. I remembered the look on my mom’s face, a mix between disappointment and confusion. But I was determined and she gave in because she worried about my making new friends every time we moved. So for the remainder of middle school, my mom packed smell-less, non-Korean food like ham and cheese sandwiches. However, that day, she was in a rush to get to her new job and packed me leftovers from dinner.
As soon as I got to my new lunch table, I tried to sneak my brightly colored lunch bag down under my seat before anyone noticed the strong smell. I looked up to see the other girls at the table, opening their normal American lunches— from cheese sandwiches to chicken salad tortilla wraps (鸡肉沙拉卷饼) to waffles and fresh fruit sandwiches, everything just looked so normal and so American. I sat quietly, trying not to be noticed when Katrina, my new friend, asked where my food was.

It was a cold November day. I sat on the bus headed to Los Angeles waiting for it to set off while other passengers piled on. An old woman with straggly (散乱的) grey hair and a weathered (饱经风霜的) face sat behind me. She wore a ragged blue and white shirt with faded brown trousers. Her shoes were worn.
Then a blond-haired girl, about sixteen years old, took the seat in front of me. The bus driver followed behind and demanded her fare. “I paid already. Yesterday, online,” the girl insisted. “No, no record of it!” the bus driver pointed to the paper in his hand and waved it in her face. “See. No pay! You pay, or you must get off.” He angrily pointed to the exit door. “But I don’t have money left. Please! ” The girl pleaded, on verge of tears.
The bus driver picked up his mobile phone and made a call to find out if there had been an error with the paperwork. About a minute later, he cut the call. “No, you have not paid. You must pay!” He roared. “But please, I don’t have any money on me. I must get to LA today. Please!” The girl begged, tears streaming down her face.
For days I had been very excited about going on a tour of LA.My dream of visiting Disneyland was about to come true. But while I sat there comfortably in my seat, thinking about my next adventure, this young girl was in tears, with a man standing over her, demanding money harshly.
I wasn’t sure what I should do. Was she telling the truth? It wouldn’t be the first time someone had extracted money by telling a sad story that turned out untrue. Maybe the bus driver would show some compassion and allow her to sort the payment out later? But no, the bus driver continued to demand she pay $40 or get off. It seemed the driver would throw her off the bus.

It was a beautiful sunny day when the moving van pulled onto the tree-lined street. Mark and Mindy stepped out of the van and looked at their new home with pride. They had both been saving for a long time to purchase their first house together and were very excited to go on a new venture.
Within an hour they had unloaded a number of boxes and were pleased with their progress. The sky had begun to darken slightly, but the weather was still pleasant. Then Mindy heard it - even felt it. There was a large clap of thunder and then a bolt of lightning. Mindy and Mark immediately froze and looked at each other, then looked at the boxes scattered on their lawn. They hastily raced to get their belongings indoors, but not before getting caught in heavy rain.
The couple stood in their living room, wet from head to toe, surrounded by what were now very wet boxes. Then, Mark noticed a pool of water in the hallway.
He went to inspect (检查) and found that there was water dripping from the ceiling. “We can have someone fix it,” Mindy said. “I’ll grab a bucket to catch the water for now.”
A moment later, Mark heard a scream and raced into the kitchen just in time to see a mouse running across the floor. Mindy was frozen with fright.
“Don’t worry. We can take care of that!” Mark said, trying to sound as reassuring (安心的) as possible. “Let’s go unpack some of the boxes. That will make us feel better.”
Mark and Mindy made their way to the living room, but when they opened a box holding their kitchen utensils (器皿) and dishes, they found that all of their plates, bowls and cups were broken. They looked at each other in dismay.
“What do we do now?” Mindy asked.
Their first day in their new home was not turning out to be the joyous occasion they had expected. Just then, they both heard a noise. There was a knock at the door.

Sophie had always been an average student in her high school. But one day, everything changed. It started with a simple act of kindness that turned into a journey of self-discovery and friendship.
Sophie’s troubles began when she was assigned a complex science project that required her to build a model of the solar system. Science was always the troublesome subject for Sophie. Despite her best efforts, she found herself struggling to grasp the concepts behind the project and to create something that would impress her teacher, Mr. Jenkins. Frustrated and close to tears, Sophie sat alone at lunch, staring blankly at her half-finished model.
Across the dining hall, Alex, a quiet boy, known for his exceptional skills in art and science, noticed Sophie’s sadness. He remembered how he himself had once felt lost and alone, and he decided to approach her.
“Hey, do you need any help?” he asked, sitting down beside her.
Sophie was hesitant at first. Being lacking in confidence, she was afraid to ask for help or cause trouble to others. Without friends to turn to, she would rather give up when getting stuck in face of challenges. But this time, she gathered courage, opened up to Alex about her struggles with the project, and asked politely, “Could you join me in the project?”
After knowing what happened, Alex nodded his head and determined to try his best to help Sophie. Over the next few days, Alex taught Sophie during their free periods, explaining the motion of planets and the importance of scale (比例) in model-making. Sophie was amazed at how patient Alex was, never once losing temper in spite of her many questions. Slowly but surely, Sophie’s understanding of the material improved, and so did her confidence. They were making and painting the model step by step and getting closer to the goal.

“The cleaners said I could pick our stuff today,” Jet’s mom said on the drive to school.
“Do you think they were able to clean Big Dog?” Jet asked, trying not to sound too worried.
But he was worried. Big Dog was his favourite stuffed animal. Grandpa had won it for him at the fair when he was five years old. Jet was eight now, and he didn’t need to sleep with it or anything. But he did need it. He needed it to sit on the shelf above his bed—the shelf that was now charred (烧焦的) by the house fire.
“I’m not sure what they were able to save,” Mom said. “They said they weren’t able to save our photo albums. I sure will miss those pictures.” Jet could tell she was really sad.
“I’ll pick you up after school, and we’ll go through the boxes together. Then we’ll see if your Big Dog can come back to us.” Mom said before she hugged him good-bye and drove off.
Jet tried to focus on his schoolwork all day, but he couldn’t keep his mind off Big Dog. He clutched (紧抓) his backpack through the halls as if he were carrying his old stuffed friend. During library time, he checked out a book about dogs. At break time, his friends were playing games while his mind was completely occupied by Big Dog.
RRRRRRINNNGGG! Time for art class.
Mr. Light said it was “artist’s choice” day, so they could work on whatever they wished.
Jet stared at an empty page. He thought of his mom picking up the boxes of things that had been damaged by the fire. Then he remembered how sad his mom was about the photo albums. Most things could be replaced at the store. But the pictures were gone forever. If only the photo album could somehow be saved, Jet thought. He wished there was a way to get those memories back, to bring a smile to his mom’s face again.

My brother Gene and I are close in age but we didn’t get along when we were children. He never included me in his fun, especially when I was eight and he was nine. It was during that time that Gene and his friends built a tree house and wouldn’t let me help.
Afterwards, he hung a sign that read, “Girls Not Allowed.” I talked to Mom about his tree house and she ordered Gene to come home. “Gene, did you build a tree house at the end of the field?” she asked. “That’s right,” Gene said proudly and pointed to the distance.
Mom said seriously, “That tree is too close to the railroad tracks. You could fall off a branch right onto the barbed-wire (带刺铁丝网) fence. The fence was put there to keep kids away from the tracks.” “Mom, if you let me keep it, I promise that I’ll make everyone clear out of it when a train goes by.”
Mom said, “Okay, but stay on this side of the fence. No one goes near the tracks, and let Diana play in the tree house.”
That morning, Mom had promised if I picked a basket of wild raspberries (树莓), she would make fresh raspberry sauce for me. I really liked fresh, sweetened raspberry sauce on a bowl of ice cream. So Iran back to the house and grabbed a basket. The wild raspberry bushes near the house were nice enough, so I picked raspberries there for a while.
But these raspberries were small compared with the acre of raspberries in that forbidden territory around the railroad tracks. I dashed to the barbed-wire fence until I found where the wire sagged (向下凹). Carefully, I stepped over the fence and into the area next to the tracks.
There were green bushes with big raspberries. I began to fill my basket. When I heard the faint sound of a train in the distance, my heart began to race. “It’s okay,” I told myself. “Just find the low spot in the fence and climb over it.” But I couldn’t find the low spot.

Finding the Perfect Sandy
“Ashley, our Sandy is singing again!”
The stage manager called to me, and I walked on stage to clip the leash (扣上皮带) onto Baily, the dog playing the role of Sandy, who was supposed to be merely a supporting role in the school musical. Our director was very close to just getting a toy animal or an actor in a dog suit. Baily was our third Sandy, but I knew he would not be the last.
“Ashley, can you please find another dog for us by Monday?” asked Mr. Loomis, our director and drama teacher.
“OK!” I knew that this dog had to be perfect.
“I think I can help you get a dog,” offered Jose, our assistant director. “In fairness, Mr. Loomis has to keep our program going. There are always threats to cut it, so he doesn’t want to see anything too odd onstage.” José added.
That was why I chose to stay backstage, despite my love for singing and dancing. My giant birthmark (胎记) that covered half of my face would be too much of a distraction. I had been in the group for one musical, and loved it, but afterward I overheard a lady telling Mr. Loomis how kind it had been for him to cast (选角) me. After that, I quit and worked behind the scenes.
“Let’s avoid odd,” I agreed.
Jose nodded. “I texted my neighbor Mrs. Kart who runs a shelter, immediately Baily started howling. She replied me right back saying she knew the perfect dog.”
We walked to Mrs. Kart’s shelter. “I have got the dog for you!” she announced. “His name is Farley. He works part-time at the airport comforting passengers who are nervous about flying.” Then she burst back through the door with a cute bundle of energy. Farley had soulful eyes and black and white spots, but the main thing about him was that he was missing a leg.
“He’s a three-legged dog!” I exclaimed, stating the obvious. Both Jose and I stood back for a moment as we considered this dog.
I sighed. “Are there any other dogs at the shelter?”

I knew healing my relationship with Dad was vital, but how to go about it was another story. At the time the gulf between us seemed insurmountable (无法逾越的). My feelings of being criticized and rejected by Dad were my deepest wound.
In my early years I was the apple of his eye, and he was a hero in my childhood. We played sports and games, and often went fishing together.
As adolescence approached, however, everything changed. It became clear that I was determined to forge my own path, one completely different from his expectation. In school I was having behavioral problems, being a class joker and breaking all the rules. And having my parents read my school report was a nightmare for me. Sometimes I was punished. Their disapproval made me feel even worse. Punishments only added to the hurt.
My dad had no idea how to deal with me. He became silent and distant, setting a wall and pretending that he didn’t care. That was even more painful to me than my mother’s voiced disapproval. I hated him for that, and pretended that I didn’t want anything to do with him. We lived under the same roof, but we were a thousand miles away from each other.
I continued to have trouble with school until the time I chose to drop out and pursue my interests in music. I became totally focused on my spiritual growth, which sent shivers (寒颤) through my father’s mind. There were many hard feelings between us, feelings that hardened as time went by.
For much of my twenties, I went about my life without much of a relationship with my dad. We had stopped trying to change each other, but the walls remained, thick and cold between us.
Things all began changing four years after mom told me it was time to deal with Dad. Hesitant for a long time, I finally took her advice and wrote my father a letter.

Standing on the edge of the plane, looking at the ground below, my tandem skydiving (双人跳伞) instructor, Bill, turned to face me. “Do you have any last words?” he asked. “Yes,” I said, joking. “I hope my parachute opens.”
I’d never felt more alive as Bill and I stepped out and started our freefall. Those first few seconds were amazing. I felt like a weightless piece of paper. As we reached 44,000 feet, I felt a parachute open above us. This, I was told, would slow us down for a smooth descent (下降). So why were we still traveling so fast? Confusion turned to panic as I glanced upward: The parachute was flopping (彻底失败) unopened in the wind.
My heart raced. I could hear Bill swearing as he tried to fix whatever had gone wrong.
Seconds passed, which felt like forever, until finally our emergency parachute opened. Except it got caught in the first one, making both parachutes useless. I asked Bill, “Are we going to die?” He said he didn’t know.
At that moment, I just felt guilty. I’d brought my family along for the day: my parents, sisters, their partners and children. I’d invited them along to watch me die. I prayed for a second chance, for a miracle that would allow me to go back and redo the moments leading up to the jump. I prayed….
We hit the ground. I was immediately breathless, and an unimaginable pain shot up my back as we bounced into a lake on a golf course. I was somehow still alive. Gathering all my strength, I turned to face Bill. His screams of agony (极度痛苦) filled the air. From neck down, I could barely move.
We were found by some golfers, who quickly summoned emergency services. My mother and sisters cried uncontrollably as Bill was put into a helicopter, and I was placed into an ambulance.

In my childhood, I tried many activities, and most of them were chosen by Mom. She would always say, “Join the swim team, Tara. Your sister is a good swimmer, so you should be too.” But she didn’t know that I was really scared of water. Even though I was afraid, I had to do this activity that made me nervous.
Every Saturday was a struggle. I would ask Mom with all my heart not to make me go to the swim meet. But most of the time, I didn’t succeed. When the starting gun went off with a loud sound, I would gather all my courage and strength and jump into the cold water. I would swim as fast as I could to the other side of the pool, but I would always see the other swimmers pass me easily.
But I didn’t give up completely. The reason was my dad. When I finally reached the edge of the pool, tired and defeated, he would be there with a warm, dry towel. He would tell me that he was proud of my hard work. His words and presence were like a life buoy, keeping me going in this uncertain situation.
Then, a big turning point came. Our school orchestra (管弦乐队) came to our class and gave a performance. The drums were just annoying, and the flutes were boring. But when I heard the violin… oh, that was different. It made the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. My heart started to dance with its melody.
For the first time in my life, I was very happy. And what’s more, the orchestra director gave me a permission slip (许可单) for my parents to sign, asking me to try out for the first seat in the community orchestra. This was a new start, a glimmer of hope in a journey that had been full of challenges and uncertainties.

A dozen children ran around laughing and playing in my friend’s yard, while we parents sat chatting and sipping cool-summer drinks. The barbecue had been cleared away when our host announced a surprise. A huge truck backed up the long, narrow driveway, capturing everyone’s attention. Adults and children watched with curiosity as the driver got out, and slowly raised a huge, portable rock wall.
It was about twelve feet wide, made of gray plastic with indented (凹陷的) footholds that stretched straight up for what looked like at least a hundred feet. The enthusiastic kids swiftly lined up to give it a try, and scrambled to the top and rang the bell that hung at the highest point. There wasn’t really anything to be afraid of since they were belted into place. Three people could climb side by side and talk to each other, so gradually the adults tried it, too.
“Come on; let’s go get in line,” my husband Neil urged. “No, you go ahead without me.” I have a unique talent for seeing unthinkable danger in almost every situation. I watched everyone else having fun, though, and finally convinced myself to try it.
With all the nerve I could muster, I started the climb Concentrating on each foothold, I slowly made my way up. I avoided looking down to prevent any sudden panic, and within a few minutes I made it to the top and proudly rang the bell.
I enjoyed my success and the fabulous view of fields and farmland until I realized there was a line below me waiting for a turn. It was time to go down.
It was one thing to look out at the world in the distance, but it was a whole other thing to look straight down. I was paralyzed with fear. Taking another deep breath, I spotted a foothold about three feet away and slid my foot into it. Unfortunately, now I was spread out like a starfish across the wall. The children below recognized my fear and called up all sorts of recommendations.

My dad believed in new experiences!
I have to admit the examples from his youth fascinated me. He specialized in his adventures growing up in Omaha in the early 1900s. His brothers threw him into a lake to teach him to swim. His family kept a cow, which he led into the church at Christmas to give Baby Jesus milk at the age of four. On and on! He used those stories to urge me to fresh experiences.
One day he came home from work early and saw me watching a local TV show — Talent Sprouts, a daily con test for kids fourteen and under. It didn’t take Dad long to look me in the eye. “You should go on Talent Sprouts.” He added, “You can play ‘Ave Maria’ — an original by Schubert (舒伯特). Think of it — an unforgettable experience to be on TV as an eleven-year-old!”
I quailed (退缩). I didn’t want to. I was basically shy. But I knew it would be useless to argue, so I mailed my application with the required information. Days later, I received a notice about performance.
Dad was over the moon when I told him I had been assigned a day to perform less than two weeks away. Still, I had very little confidence in my talent. I did practice several times each day. However, I either skipped some beats or unable to grasp the rhythm well when practicing. I could never have played Schubert’s original perfectly, so I was increasingly uneasy about the coming performance.
When my Monday came, I took a bus to the TV station with my Dad. I checked in at the desk. The host of Talent Sprouts, and the musical director welcomed the participants and described the routine for us. Everything was fresh there. The crew in the auditorium pushed big cameras on wheels and adjusted lights. I waited on the seat and soon I was called.

George was so excited he could hardly wait to get to the store. He walked so fast that his sister Beth had to run. “Do you have to hurry like that?” she puffed. On his way from school he had seen that baseball cap in Rogers’ store window. Only a dollar and this was the last cap! George had looked at the cap a long time. He wanted it more than anything. Every boy at school had one.
George thought of his piggy bank, into which he put every coin for running errands (差使) for his family and neighbors.
George raced home, not stopping for anything. He held the fat iron pig, opened it carefully, and poured out the coins. Ten...twenty...thirty...ninety cents. If only he had one more dime (一角硬币)!
Lost in thought, George stared out the window. “What’s wrong, George?” asked Mother George told about the money and the cap. “If you give me what you have, I’ll add a dime,” Mother said, handing him a dollar bill.
George jumped up. “Oh, thanks, Mom. That’s great!” George gave all his coins to Mother and took the dollar bill. And away went George and Beth to the store with the dollar bill in George’s pocket.
They turned the last comer. Ahead was a group of boys and girls, talking heatedly and looking down at the sidewalk.
One of the children was Ronny, a new boy who had been in this town only a short time. Ronny’s father had been sick, so there wasn’t much money for extras - like baseball cap.
“What’s the matter?” Beth asked, anxiously.
“It’s Ronny,” answered one of them. “He’s been working and finally saved up a whole dollar, and now it’s lost!”
George went over to Ronny.

【答案】One possible version
“I’m not really hungry,” I replied in a weak voice. But Katrina had already seen me carry my lunch so she called out, “Then, I’ll eat it!” The other girls laughed. I didn’t want to be rude to my potential new friends, so I reluctantly dragged out my lunch bag and unzipped it. The moment I partially lifted the lid, a strong smell floating in the air, the girls curiously gazed at the container. I expected an “Ew” or a “What is that?” I expected them to turn away — and turn me away. What I did not expect was for Katrina to instantly grab a small piece of tofu and eat it eagerly. Most certainly, I did not expect her to encourage the rest of the table to try my lunch.
It took me a second to recognize that my foreign, Korean food was not being rejected. In fact, it had become a source of personal pride. My new friends were going on about how lucky I was that my mom took the time to prepare a cooked meal for me. They were fascinated by the fact that tofu could actually taste good. As we chatted and shared stories, we ended up exchanging our lunches, and I received quite a few bites of their American food. While I didn’t get to eat any of my mom’s pan-fried tofu, I was full of pride and gratitude. When I arrived home and my mom asked about the lunch with a wave of guilt and uncertainty in her tone, I brightly flashed her a smile, “Mom, it was perfect!” I was moved to realize that mom’ s cooking had not only nourished me but also helped me strengthen connections.

【答案】范文
Suddenly, the old woman behind me walked straight to the driver, “I’ll pay for her.” Dressed in a ragged shirt and faded trousers, she looked in need herself. She stepped forward and stood directly in front of the driver. Without asking any questions, she didn’t doubt the girl as I had. “This is for her, ” she said, holding out forty dollars and pointing to the girl. Surprised, the bus driver nodded, and took the money. The young girl thanked her for her kind offer.
At the next stop, I approached the old lady, money in hand. I said, “That was a really kind thing you did for that girl. Here, I want to share what you paid.” When I gave her the note, she looked at me with gratitude, saying that was her last forty dollars! When I was shocked by her act of kindness, a couple of others came to surround her with their money. Actually, her forty dollars made a great difference!

【答案】
They opened the door slowly and found a little cat before their eyes. An elderly man was standing on the porch with some savory (可口的) cookies. Grinning, the man introduced himself as Tom. Upon seeing the van parked outside, he brought cookies to welcome his new neighbors. Tom’s words and the smell of the cookies calmed Mark a lot, but with the boxes in the room in a mess, Mark felt embarrassed. Unexpectedly, Tom came in and helped the hosts clean up the room and finally they sat down together, enjoying the cookies happily. Suddenly they heard a noise.
The squeaking (吱吱叫) noises were coming from the attic (阁楼). Puzzled, Mindy ran upstairs. “It’s a lovely kitten,” Mindy cried cheerfully. “It must be because James, the former owner of the house, used to feed a stray cat to drive out the mice,” smiled Tom. “It was James who helped me when I was helpless, just as you are now.” Feeling the warmth from the neighbor, Mark and Mindy were very grateful. The rain is still falling, but it could never dampen their hopes for the future.

【答案】
One afternoon, Sophie accidentally knocked over a container of paint. The paint spilled all over their nearly completed model, and Sophie’s heart sank. She was on the verge of tears, but Alex quickly reassured her, “It’s okay, we can fix this.” Together, they cleaned up the mess and repainted the model, working late into the evening. This incident taught Sophie the value of perseverance and teamwork. She realized that mistakes were part of the learning process and that she didn’t have to face challenges alone.
The day of their presentation to the class came. Sophie was nervous but also excited to show what they had accomplished. As they presented their model, Sophie explained the concepts with newfound confidence, and Alex added insightful details. Their classmates were impressed, and Mr. Jenkins praised their creativity and teamwork. Sophie felt a sense of pride and gratitude towards Alex for his support. This experience not only improved her understanding of science but also marked the beginning of a meaningful friendship with Alex.

【答案】
Then, all of a sudden, he knew what he could draw. He started with a picture of himself opening presents in front of a Christmas tree. Then one of him and his mom camping. Then there was one of Grandpa, standing tall and smiling, holding out a stuffed toy—Big Dog. The lines of Big Dog came easily, as if Jet had memorized every detail. By the time class was over, Jet had a small album stretched out and was ready to surprise her mom. When Jet’s mom picked him up from school, however, Jet’s eyes were caught by Big Dog in the back seat. He squeezed Big Dog around the neck and hugged it tightly, feeling the familiar softness against his cheek. But then, something inside him shifted. He remembered the album in his backpack.
Jet gave his mom a huge hug, and said, “I have a surprise for you too!” Digging into his backpack, Jet pulled out the small album. “I know we lost a lot of things in the fire, and the photo albums were really special to you.” he said in a soft voice. As Jet’s mom flipped through the pictures, she laughed and cried. There she saw the drawings of their favorite memories. Each picture captured a moment they had shared, a moment they thought they’d lost in the fire. That night, after they unpacked more of the boxes, Jet carefully placed Big Dog back on the shelf above his bed. Maybe the fire had taken some things, but it hadn’t taken what mattered most—their love, their memories, and the chance to keep making new ones.

At the end of the album, Jet’s mom discovered a blank page. She turned it thoughtfully, noticing that Jet had left it intentionally empty. “Why is this page blank?” she asked curiously. Jet looked at her with a mischievous grin. “That’s for our next adventure,” he said. Mom laughed, wiping away a tear. “I love it,” she said, pulling him into a tight embrace. As they sat together in their temporary apartment, surrounded by their salvaged belongings, Jet felt a renewed sense of hope and happiness. He knew that no matter what happened, he and his mom would always have each other, and that was enough.

【答案】
I raced back and forth along the fence. It seemed as though the low spot had disappeared. The ground began to shake. The air was filled with the loud noises of the train’s engine. Frightened, I stuck my head through the barbed wire and tried to climb over it. My shirt and pants were caught on the barbs. I screamed, but the train drowned out my voice. Then I felt someone’s hands grab my hands and freed me from the barbs quickly. Unexpectedly, it was Gene! The train was inches away when we found the low spot.
Using all his strength, Gene pushed me over the fence. Then he followed me over it. Right away, the train passed by and then all was quiet. He hugged me while I buried my head into his shoulders and cried. “You are so reckless! Thank God! I was in the tree house and spotted you!” he said proudly. Then he seized the basket from my hand and we began to walk back home. After getting home, we didn’t tell Mom what had happened. But after raspberry sauce was presented, I put a scoop of sauce on his ice cream. Casting me a mysterious smile, he whispered, “Would you like to join in the party in my tree house tomorrow?”

【答案】One Possible Version:
Unfortunately, my weekend search did not produce any other possibilities. Despite visiting numerous shelters, each attempt left me discouraged than the last. With the performance day approaching, I felt like an ant on a hot pan as my pressure mounted and panic set in heavily. But when I stood in front of Farley, watching him playfully chase his tail and his soulful eyes glittering, I finally determined to give the three-legged creature a try. On the day of performance, to my great amazement, Farley didn’t chew or bark or do anything inappropriate, but acted like a star, following the directions given and performed perfectly for his tender nature. Thunderous applause erupting from the audience confirmed that Farley’s was the perfect Sandy despite his imperfection.
“I thought that performers had to be perfect.” I said to Mr. Loomis after the performance. Startled by my words, Mr. Loomis gazed at me cautiously, shaking his head, “Actually, I was very confused and disappointed when you quit casting. You were cast for your good vocal range and passion for the stage.” With choked emotions, I explained, “I didn’t want to create visual tension due to my birthmark. I thought you cast me out of pity but what you desired definitely was perfection.” Patting me on the shoulder, Mr. Loomis told me that theater was for everyone, and perfection isn’t about being flawless, yet it was about bringing a genuine spirit and connection to the performance. With these words striking into my heart, I decided to follow my passion and be the perfect Sandy myself.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
After sending the letter, I felt a heavy weight on my mind. Would he receive it? How would he respond? I waited for his reply, nervously opening up the mail each day. Days later, his response arrived. I read the letter again and again, disbelief washing over me — it wasn’t the distant, silent dad I knew but someone wise, tender, approachable. I plucked up my courage and called him. We both fumbled for words, but couldn’t find any. Finally, a shaky “I love you” passed between us before we hung up, both overwhelmed by the weight of the moment. His words had stirred a deep desire for me to see him, to seek for the love that we had lost for so long.
I visited my father soon after receiving his letter. My time with my father was sweet and meaningful. We sat on the porch, the familiar scent of cut grass and old wood filling the air. The awkwardness of the past seemed to melt away, replaced by a shared history of laughter, tears, and the unspoken desire for connection. Though our paths had been apart, they were now coming back together. It was a conversation filled with a quiet understanding. It was a conversation filled with shared openness. It was a conversation filled with unexpected warmth. Together, we stepped forward on a journey towards healing and forgiveness between a father and a son.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】possible versions:
Para 1: The next four or five months were really challenging. I had broken my back, and the doctors said I was really lucky to still be breathing. But the injury meant I couldn’t walk, and my long, dull stay in the hospital left me yearning for the outdoors. Despite my family’s constant presence and encouragement, I sank into despair. After being discharged from the hospital, I isolated myself, locking my bedroom door and relying on painkillers to numb both physical and emotional pain. The thought of facing the world outside terrified me, and I couldn’t see a way forward. Yet, deep down, I knew I couldn’t live like this forever.
Para 2: Years later, I heard that Bill had made a full recovery and returned to skydiving. I was shocked and wondered how he managed it. With my family’s encouragement, I gathered the courage to visit Bill again. Our conversation was brief, but it left a lasting impact on me. His strong will and persistence reignited something in me. I realized that life is too short to live in fear. Nothing compares to falling from 44,000 feet without a parachute and surviving - it forced me to re-evaluate everything. We made a promise that day: I would try tandem skydiving again, not as a test of fate, but to embrace life’s weightless, freeing moments.
Para 1: The next four or five months were really challenging. My severely injured back caused constant, unbearable pain. What’s worse, at first, I was unable to move on my own, forcing me to rely completely on my family for everything. Watching them rush around to care for me, I felt like a fool, regretting my reckless decision to make that dangerous jump. The frustration in my heart matched the physical pain in my body, making the recovery process feel endless. Although I eventually began to regain some normalcy, I was convinced that the darkest days of my life would forever keep me grounded, far from ever skydiving again.
Para 2: Years later, I heard that Bill had made a full recovery and returned to skydiving. The news excited and confused me, as I had been told that Bill’s injuries were even more severe than mine, and surely his recovery would have been longer and harder. I called him to offer my congratulations and to ask the question that had been bothering me: “Aren’t you afraid of skydiving after the accident?” After a brief silence, he responded calmly, “I love skydiving. Since God gave me another chance at life, I want to pursue what I love.” His words struck a chord with me — perhaps the true value lies not in avoiding pain, but in finding courage and gratitude in the face of it, between life and death.

【答案】
Tightly holding the permission slip, I ran all the way home after school. I burst through the door, eager to share my discovery with my mom. I explained how the violin’s sound had captivated me, and to my surprise, she sensed the genuine passion in my words. With a gentle smile, she signed the slip, giving me her silent blessing to pursue this new path. That evening, I immersed myself in the violin’s world, my fingers exploring its contours, learning its structure. As I practiced, each scale and note became a step in my transformation, from a hesitant swimmer to a budding musician.
Finally came the tryout for the first seat. I stood before the mirror, the violin secure under my chin, feeling the strings resonate with my touch. The notes I played were echoes of my dedication, reflections of the hours I’d spent honing my skills. Stepping into the audition room, I felt the outside world melt away, leaving only the music and my connection to it. The judges’ gazes were upon me. The violin was no longer just an instrument; it was a part of who I was becoming, and as the last note faded, I knew I had found not just a voice, but a new identity. This audition marked my emergence from the challenges of the past into a future filled with potential.

【答案】
All well-intentioned advice, but the fact remained that I couldn’t move. I heard some commotion below, and then my husband was suddenly next to me on the wall. We chatted about the party for a few minutes, and then he said, “Col, brush that fly away from your head.” Without thinking, I did, and then instinctively reached out for a different ledge to grab. I smiled, realizing that, of course, I could move. Over the next fifteen minutes, Neil talked me all the way down, step by step.
By the time we got to the bottom, I felt great. I wasn’t anxious or stressed; in fact, I was calmer and more peaceful than when I started out. It was a great lesson in mindfulness. Fixating on being stuck on the top of the wall paralyzed me from being able to move on. Focusing instead on all the good things I could see along the way down connected me back to the moment and distracted me from my fear. Who would have thought that an adventure on a rock wall would teach me such a good lesson about life?

【答案】
I went to the piano and began to play. Easy, so easy! Fun almost ...right up to the coda at the end. I suddenly realized I should not be at the end! My heart jumped to my mouth. I had skipped a part. A huge part. How did that happen? Taking a deep breath, I calmed down. Somehow my brain went to work and I continued playing. I tried to smile at the camera and played the rest smoothly as if no skipping had happened. After what seemed an eternity, I stopped playing. However, it turned out that my performance had probably lasted barely a minute.
Disappointed, I returned to my seat, where my dad was waiting for me. Surely the result was as expected — I wasn’t the winner. On my way home, I surprised myself by feeling more relieved than disappointed. I could not pretend that my performance was the best. In truth, the other three were far superior. When I talked about The Big Skip, Dad smiled, “It may not have been noticed by someone who doesn’t know Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria.’ Your movement was smooth. You didn’t fall apart. All in all, a worthwhile experience.”

“We’ll all help look. We’ll find it!”
“I was going to get that last cap in Rogers’ window. I wanted it a lot. With that cap, I could join them.” Ronny said slowly.
Suddenly George remembered how Ronny had watched the fellows playing baseball, his eyes lighting up eagerly as they shouted and ran.

【答案】
George stared at the ground, thinking hard. That cap would make Ronny feel he really belonged to the fellow group. But he himself had longed for it so much. He bit his lower lips, with his hand tightly clutching the dollar. Ronny’s words constantly flashed through his mind. It hit him that he should do something nice for Ronny. He bent down and gave a shout, “Look! Look here!” They all crowded around. There almost hidden in the leaves was the unmistakable green of a dollar bill! Overwhelmingly excited and delighted, Ronny picked up the bill. “Come on!” someone shouted, and they then made a dash for the store. “Why not come together and get something else with your dollar?” Beth asked George.
Forcing a smile, George showed Beth the empty pocket. Eyes wide open, Beth uttered in surprise, “George, you didn’t really find Ronny’s dollar. It was yours.” George nodded, a broad smile flickering across his face. He explained in a calm tone that the baseball cap mattered a lot more to Ronny. With the cap, he thought, Ronny would feel it easier to fit in with others. After knowing what her brother had done, Beth felt a flush of pride flooding over her. And not far away from them, Ronny was among the group of boys, wearing his new cap. The look on his face made George feel good-very good. The one dollar had traded what he thought was more than a cap.
