“Why do I live? Why do I wish for anything, or do anything? Is there anything in my life that will not be destroyed by my death?” Like Leo Tolstoy (列夫·托尔斯泰), the famous Russian writer, many people ask these difficult questions. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer these difficult questions.
As a young man, he thought people could achieve perfection if they tried hard enough. So he worked very hard to be the best in everything. He thought that he would find meaning and truth in success. In 1850s, he wrote his first stories. He wrote about his life in the army. He also told stories about his childhood. These works were published and Tolstoy became a well-known writer.
He earned the respect he always wanted. Many rich and smart men met and talked with Tolstoy. Some of them were writers like him. They talked a lot about faith and the meaning of life. But soon Tolstoy recognized that these men were not perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.
So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life.
He opened a school for the children of his serfs—the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor. He wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the rich people he knew.
Tolstoy learned a lot from his workers. He understood how they worked hard to support their families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.
The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy’s life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous books—War and Peace and Anna Karenina (《安娜·卡列尼娜》). Many experts say that War and Peace is one of the greatest books ever written. In these books, Tolstoy believed humans should live a simple life and take care of their families. Tolstoy thought this would satisfy him and bring him happiness.
Leo Tolstoy is still a very respected writer today. His faith and writings have influenced many people all over the world.

“I can’t believe you put that photo of me on WeChat!” Does this sound familiar? Do your parents post photos of you online? Are there photos out there that you really don’t want the world to see? Posting photos of your children online which is also called sharenting is becoming more and more popular around the world.
But French police have warned that parents could face future lawsuits (起诉) from their children. Under French law, you are not allowed to publish a photo of someone without their consent.
Some children have asked their parents not to share photos online. Children grow up fast and parents must respect that.
“Mom, we’ve discussed this. You may not post anything without my consent.” Apple Martin wrote the above comment under a photo taken by her famous mother, Gwyneth Paltrow, of the two of them skiing, and a media storm followed.
Ray Fitzgerald, a parenting coach, advises his followers to stick to the “three P rules of posting”.
•Privacy—Make sure private images stay private and check that your privacy settings are as tight as possible.
•Perception—If you were a teenager, would you like your parents to share that picture of you online? If the answer is no, then don’t post it.
•Permission—Always ask a teenager’s permission before posting an image.
I asked some teenagers and here are some of their comments.
“I don’t usually mind. My mum and dad have given me a very happy childhood. They’ve been great parents. But last week my mum shared a picture of me and her in the park. It was such a bad picture. I was so embarrassed. Sharenting is bad news.”
— SAM
“My mum has so few followers, I don’t mind. But it’s different if your parents are famous or have lots of followers. Gwyneth Paltrow is very famous and so many people saw that skiing picture. I do think her daughter was right to be angry.”
—JACK
After much discussion, most people seem to agree that it’s time to stop sharenting when your children are about 12 or 13 years old. The pictures can be so embarrassing and they’re out there forever. Which side are you on?
34.Which of following might be sharenting?
A.Dale, a teenage boy, likes taking photos of his parents and posting them online.
B.Grace, a teacher, likes taking photos of her own daily life and posting them online.
C.Anna, a mother, likes taking photos of her 6-year-old son and posting them online.
D.Kevin, a father, likes taking photos of the beautiful nature and posting them online.
35.What does the underlined word “consent” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Agreement. B.Advice. C.Action. D.Ability.
36.What can be known from the passage?
A.It’s all right for parents to post their children’s photos online.
B.It’s necessary for parents to stick to the “three P rules of posting”.
C.Both Sam and Jack think it’s a good idea to post children’s photos online.
D.All parents should stop posting pictures of children older than 12 years old.
37.Which is the best title for the text?

A
“Why do I live?
26.Which is the correct order of the following events?
① Tolstoy served in the army. ②Tolstoy got married.

You may think you cannot live through summer without electric fans. But in ancient China, hand fans were almost the only ones to help people keep cool. There are many types of hand fans with different uses.
Chinese people started to use hand fans over two thousand years ago. The fans came in different shapes such as round and square. They were also made of all kinds of materials. The ancient round fans have different shapes which are made according to their own preferences. Palm (棕榈) leaf fans were not expensive and not difficult to make even most of people can have. Feather fans once could be used only by a few people who had wealth and had power. Sandalwood fans could send out a sweet smell that let people liked them.
Later, hand fans became far more than just something that could cool you down. They developed into artworks in which tuanshan (round fans) and zheshan (folded fans) were the most common. In the shape of a full moon, tuanshan were usually made of silk. They had beautiful birds and flowers on them. Women, especially those in the imperial palace liked using them.
Meanwhile, men, especially the poets, used zheshan. The poets liked them because zheshan were usually made of paper and they could paint and write poems on them. It was a way for them to show off their ability in literature painting and handwriting. Almost anything can be painted on zheshan.
