It’s often said that people who are born blind or lose their sight, especially when young, can touch, taste, smell, and hear better than those who can see. Donna Posont, who is blind, helps others use their enhanced hearing to detect thousands of bird songs.
Posont is a graduate of the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She leads a monthly program she founded at the college. It’s called Birding by Ear and Beyond. It’s held on Saturday each month. During the program, Posont leads visually-impaired people through 120 acres of campus forest. They listen for the sounds of many birds. These include crows, geese, chickadees, woodpeckers, robins, and red-winged blackbirds.
Participants learn to tell the sometimes subtle differences between bird species. They also learn how each bird fits into their habitat. “The world is designed for sighted people, but nature is a special place where it’s okay to be blind,” Posont told The Washington Post. “You can use your other senses to learn why birds and nature are important and how it all works (as one). To me, that’s the beauty of it.”
Posont is 67 years old. She has been blind since second grade. She was born with retinitis pigmentosa. It’s a worsening condition that affects the back wall of the eye. She graduated in environmental studies from the college. She’s also a certified interpretive guide and part-time naturalist at Michigan-Dearborn.
Jerusalem Crawley first met Posont at a summer camp for the visually impaired. He’s been attending her classes for 15 years. As a child, Crawley said he had no idea there were thousands of bird species. “I used to think all birds were alike,” Crawley told Audubon Magazine. “This opened my eyes,” he said.
Through her program, Posont not only helps visually impaired individuals connect with nature but also inspires them to challenge their perceptions and embrace the world through a different lens. The ability to identify birds by ear becomes a gateway to understanding the relationships within ecosystems and the value of nature.
4. What does Posont’s program focus on?
A. Training blind people to be nature guides.
B. Providing blind people a safe outdoor space.
C. Helping blind people identify birds by sound.
D. Leading blind people to protect campus forest.
5. Why does Posont think nature is a special place for blind people?
A. Nature helps people learn about birds’ habitat.
B. Nature benefits blind people’s physical health.
C. Blind people can study the behavior of wildlife.
D. Blind people can experience nature with other senses.
6. What can you infer from the last paragraph?
A. The process of Posont’s program.
B. The challenge of Posont’s program.
C. The development of Posont’s program.
D. The significance of Posont’s program.
7. Which would be the best title for the text?
A. Birding by Ear: A Program for the Blind
B. Beauty of Nature: A Journey of Discovery
C. Natural Sound: A Journey to the Unknown
D. Donna Posont: A Volunteer for Bird Protection
C 5. D 6. D 7. A
根据文章第二段“During the program, Posont leads visually-impaired people through 120 acres of campus forest. They listen for the sounds of many birds. These include crows, geese, chickadees, woodpeckers, robins, and red-winged blackbirds. (在这个项目中,波斯特带领视障人士穿过120英亩的校园森林。他们倾听许多鸟的叫声。这些鸟类包括乌鸦、鹅、山雀、啄木鸟、知更鸟和红翼黑鸟)”可知,Posont 的项目旨在帮助视障人士通过声音辨别鸟类。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中 Posont 所说“The world is designed for sighted people, but nature is a special place where it’s okay to be blind(这个世界是为视力正常的人设计的,但大自然是一个特殊的地方,在那里盲人也没关系)”以及“You can use your other senses to learn why birds and nature are important and how it all works.(你可以用你的其他感官来了解为什么鸟类和自然是重要的,以及它们是如何作为一个整体运作的)”可知,她认为自然界为视障人士提供了利用其他感官体验世界的机会。
根据最后一段“Through her program, Posont not only helps visually impaired individuals connect with nature but also inspires them to challenge their perceptions and embrace the world through a different lens. 【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“It’s often said that people who are born blind or lose their sight, especially when young, can touch, taste, smell, and hear better than those who can see. Donna Posont, who is blind, helps others use their enhanced hearing to detect thousands of bird songs.(人们常说,天生失明或失明的人,尤其是在年轻时,比那些能看见的人在触觉、味觉、嗅觉和听觉方面都要好。唐娜·波森特是盲人,她帮助其他人利用他们增强的听觉来探测成千上万的鸟鸣)”及第二段“She leads a monthly program she founded at the college. It’s called Birding by Ear and Beyond.(她领导着她在学院创立的一个月度项目)”及最后一段“Through her program, Posont not only helps visually impaired individuals connect with nature but also inspires them to challenge their perceptions and embrace the world through a different lens.(通过她的项目,Posont不仅帮助视障人士与自然联系,还激励他们挑战自己的观念,通过不同的视角拥抱世界)”并结合全文可知,本文主要讲述了 Donna Posont 为视障人士创办的 故选A项。
C
Where were the dull sounds of flying insects hitting against the light bulb? Even the absent singing of cicadas or crickets, whichever they were, had quieted its instruments. Where have all the insects gone?
Our own existence depends on a diverse insect world. Studies show that where more insect species are present, pollination (授粉) is more reliable. As Dave Goulson, professor of biology, points out in his book Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse, about three- quarters of all crops grown by humans require pollination by animals, the vast majority by insects. “We could not feed the global human population without pollinators,” he writes. It’s not just about bees and butterflies, the beautiful insects. Other, less visually appealing pollinators such as flies, moths, and earwigs are also showing declines. Several of these species don’t just pollinate. They also eat the pest (害虫) insects that ruin crops.
It turns out that ecologists and entomologists around the world have been warning about declining insect numbers for years. The culprits are climate change, habitat loss, light pollution, intensive farming, pesticide and fertilizer use.
But it’s a struggle to get people to act. After all, we humans have a complicated relationship with our six-legged fellow companions. Who can forget the horror of Kafka’s Metamorphosis (《变形记》), where a travelling salesman wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into an insect? Even insects like butterflies and bees can seem strange when you look at them closely. Maybe we’ve been ignoring them because they seem different from us.
Some steps may be as simple as turning off artificial light. A recent study in China found that trees in Beijing, lit by street lights at night, seem to have tougher leaves. In other words, insects are probably being starved in the area.
We should change our attitudes to insects. Those annoying flies hovering around your food are simply doing what they were born for. They’re recycling. Without them we might be wondering what to do about rotting (腐烂的) waste. Besides, they’re food for birds, and UK bird populations have greatly decreased in recent years.
8. What can we learn about insects in the first two paragraphs?
A. Less appealing insects are on the increase.
B. Beautiful insects can help kill the pests.
C. Insect pollination affects the crop types.
D. Insect decline threatens global food supply.
9. What does the underlined word “culprits” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Solutions. B. Causes. C. Effects. D. Consequences.
10. What does the author want to say by mentioning Kafka’s Metamorphosis?
A. The book of insects is interesting.
B. Unattractive insects are ignored.
C. Insects are everywhere in our lives.
D. People have complex feelings to insects.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To explore the diversity of the insects.
B To compare the different features of insects.
C. To warn about the insect decline and its effects.
D. To review the history of human-insect relationship.
D 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第一段“Where were the dull sounds of flying insects hitting against the light bulb? Even the absent singing of cicadas or crickets, whichever they were, had quieted its instruments. Where have all the insects gone? (飞虫撞击灯泡的沉闷声音在哪里?即使没有蝉或蟋蟀的歌声,不管它们是什么,也使乐器安静下来。昆虫都到哪里去了?)”和第二段“Our own existence depends on a diverse insect world.
根据上文“It turns out that ecologists and entomologists around the world have been warning about declining insect numbers for years. (事实证明,世界各地的生态学家和昆虫学家多年来一直在警告昆虫数量下降。)”,所以可推测下文指出了昆虫数量下降的原因是气候变化、栖息地丧失、光污染、集约化农业、农药和化肥的使用。“culprits”指的是这些导致昆虫数量下降的因素,也就是“罪魁祸首”,即“原因”,和causes同义,故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“But it’s a struggle to get people to act.
D
How important are the first three episodes (集) to a show? The first three episodes of a drama are crucial for keeping viewers engaged. Tencent Video data suggests that almost 40% of viewers abandon a show within the first three episodes, with 35% of those abandoning it within the first seven minutes of the first episode.
But now, the old rules of judging a show by its first few episodes are fading. The audience has developed from the double-speed watching at the beginning to the commentary- style (弹幕式) watching, and then to the fragmented (碎片化) watching that is appearing now. The audience’s speed of watching shows has been speeding up.
When the audience is more and more casual in watching shows, we can’t help but ask, is it because shows nowadays are bad? Or is it because the audience is impatient? For young people who are active on social media, they have many choices. When a new show comes out, they will not watch the first three episodes, but go to Weibo, Douban and other social media platforms to watch short video clips. When a show can’t get popular in the first week, it basically fails.
The poet Coleridge said “Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink.” This explains the value of short videos: in the crowded field of information, you can’t get any useful knowledge. Watching shows by short videos is different from watching movies or reading novels. While we are surrounded by short videos, finding real knowledge is a struggle. Short videos offer instant satisfaction but lack depth, finally destroying the artistic value of film and television. This constant stream of fragmented information can make us lazy thinkers.
Nowadays, people don’t have the patience to watch a movie, a famous book, or an in-depth article. Neil Postman’s warning that we’re becoming “amused to death” is proving true.
12. What does the data from Tencent Video suggest?
A. Viewers’ expectation for shows.
B. Viewers’ impatience with shows.
C. Viewers’ opinions on making shows.
D. Viewers’ reasons for abandoning shows.
13. Why have the audience changed their habits of watching shows?
A. The shows have become longer today.
B. The quality of shows has decreased greatly.
C. Audience may not like watching shows as before.
D. Social media provides many choices of short videos.
14. What is the influence of watching shows by short videos?
A. It will reduce viewers’ confusion.
B. It will narrow viewers’ horizon.
C. It will weaken viewers’ thinking abilities.
D. It will provide viewers useful knowledge.
15. How does the author feel about the change in watching shows?
A. Worried. B. Surprised. C. Uncertain. D. Satisfied.
B 13. D 14. C 15. A

由文章第三段“When the audience is more and more casual in watching shows, we can’t help but ask, is it because shows nowadays are bad? Or is it because the audience is impatient? For young people who are active on social media, they have many choices. When a new show comes out, they will not watch the first three episodes, but go to Weibo, Douban and other social media platforms to watch short video clips. When a show can’t get popular in the first week, it basically fails. (当观众越来越随意地看节目时,我们不禁要问,这是因为现在的节目不好吗?还是因为听众没有耐心?对于活跃在社交媒体上的年轻人来说,他们有很多选择。当一部新剧播出时,他们不会看前三集,而是去微博、豆瓣等社交媒体平台看短视频。如果一部剧在第一周不受欢迎,它基本上就失败了。)”可知,社交媒体提供了很多短视频的选择,改变了观众的观剧习惯。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第四段中“This constant stream of fragmented information can make us lazy thinkers. (这种持续不断的碎片化信息会让我们变得懒惰。)”可知,这说明通过短视频看剧会削弱观众的思维能力。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由文章最后一段“Nowadays, people don’t have the patience to watch a movie, a famous book, or an in-depth article. Neil Postman’s warning that we’re becoming “amused to death” is proving true. (现在,人们没有耐心去看一部电影、一本名著或一篇深入的文章。Neil Postman警告说,我们正变得“被逗乐到死”,事实证明这是真的。)”可知,作者对观剧习惯的改变感到担忧。故选A。

I’d just returned from a beautiful fall early-morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken.
I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but it was all in vain.
At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch in exhaustion. I began to take key inventory (盘点). The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one takes a lot of time. I had a spare car key, but it was unstable, and the key fob (钥匙) would be expensive to replace. But the iron heart made by my grandson was precious beyond measure. Just thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes.
For some reason I will never understand, I didn’t begin the various tasks involved in getting replacements. Instead, I continued with the day.
That night, it turned colder and we had a snow flurry. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening.
It was peaceful until I heard the horrific screech (尖叫) of my car alarm blasting from the garage. I rushed to the car, inserted the unstable key in the door and finally opened it, and then wiggled it in the ignition (点火装置) until the alarm stopped. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next-door neighbors being startled and annoyed.
I went back in the house but it started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm blasted again. I repeated the process.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell.

I took the keys in my grateful hands, amazed by such a clever neighbor.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Assuming it was a neighbor ready to fuss at me, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready. In the light snow stood a neighbor from several streets away, who held out her gloved hand, with my keys hanging from her pointer finger and a giant smile on her face! “Oh, my goodness! My keys!” I exclaimed, unable to believe my eyes as I stood there in utter amazement. “Sorry about all the noise, but your key fob has the alarm button, and we kept pressing it until we found your home!” she said, handing them over with a wink.
I took the keys in my grateful hands, amazed by such a clever neighbor. “Thank you soooo much,” I stammered, my voice thick with emotion. “You’ve saved me a huge hassle. Please, come inside and have a cup of hot cocoa.” “No thank you,” she said softly. “I’m just glad I could help.” And with that, she turned and disappeared into the swirling snowflakes, leaving me standing there, clutching my keys and realizing how a simple act of kindness had transformed a frustrating and chilly day into a heartwarming one.

A. To explore the diversity of the insects.

D Viewers’ reasons for abandoning shows.
A. Worried. B. Surprised. C. Uncertain. D. Satisfied.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell.
