Pittsburgh isn’t a city of blockbuster sights; it is for return visitors. Here is what you can see and do in America’s steel city.
FEDERAL GALLEY
A hip food hall within walking distance of the Andy Warhol Museum, Federal Galley serves as a testing ground for startup restaurants, presenting cuisines from all corners of the globe beneath its corrugated tin roof. With a changing list of restaurants, there’s something for every appetite, from American breakfasts to short ribs, fancy salads and much more.
MATTRESS FACTORY
Step into a bewildering world of darkness, light and texture at this contemporary art museum (it calls itself a “laboratory”), housed in a former mattress storehouse. Founded in 1977, it offers four floors of interactive exhibits — both revolving exhibitions and permanent pieces by the likes of Greer Lankton, James Turrell, Yayoi Kusama.
AUGUST WILSON AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER
Pittsburgh native August Wilson was a pioneer for Black playwrights and poets in the 1960s and ‘70s. His 10-play Century Cycle(recording the Black experience in Pittsburgh in the 20th century) is a key piece of US theatre; today visitors can see the works staged at this cultural centre, whose calendar of events, poetry readings and talks honor Wilson’s legacy.
CARNEGIE MUSEUMS
The Oakland neighbourhood boasts a complex of museums and galleries. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History puts visitors face to face with two towering dinosaurs and the Wertz Gallery shines with its displays of jewels and gems; the Carnegie Museum of Art meanwhile, is home to works by the world’s finest impressionist painters, including van Gogh, Monet, Pissarro and Henri Le Sidaner.
1. What does Federal Galley have to offer?
A. A bite of the world. B. Entrance to a museum.
C. A place for food inspection. D. Education in starting restaurants.
2. Which man plays a role in Black literature?
A. Andy Warhol. B. James Turrell.
C. August Wilson. D. Henri Le Sidaner.

The room on this day is in a Florida assisted living facility and is full of residents, staff, family, and even a local news photographer. Yet Magic wanders over and rests her head in the lap of one particular resident, who begins talking to her. “Isn’t she beautiful?” the resident says. The activities director begins to cry. It turns out that the woman hadn’t spoken a word since she arrived three years ago.
That’s the Magic touch. Our 14-year-old therapy black horse has won the hearts of many. She’s been called in to cheer up survivors of tragedy and natural disaster. Often our little black pony comes home with stains on her white nose from being kissed by all the ladies. Magic also has a very special relationship with children in hospital care. One little boy who had both a heart transplant and leukemia said Magic made his face hurt from smiling so much.
To work indoors, all the miniature horses have to go through basic training. Magic is no exception, but proves to be exceptional: riding elevators, taking stairs, and staying calm around loud noises. We often play the song “Do You Believe in Magic” before bringing her in. She knows exactly what that means. She raises her ears and does a little prance (腾跃) for everyone.
At one facility, a woman was waiting in the lobby bright and early on the morning Magic was scheduled to visit. At another, one man’s family contacted the facility to alert them that he’d taken a turn for the worse: He’d just called and said there was a tiny horse in his room. They were relieved to learn it was not the hallucinatory (幻觉的) kind — the Magic kind.
4. What brings the activities director to tears?
A. The change of a resident.
B. The assistance from a facility.
C. The discussion on a miniature horse.
D. The interaction with a news photographer.
5. What is a characteristic of Magic’s job?
A. Carrying out rescue. B. Attending to sick kids.
C. Encouraging friendship. D. Offering comfort and joy.
6 What does Magic’s performance in Para.3 show?
A. Magic is a natural leader. B. Magic is a household name.
C. Magic is a figure in the lyrics. D. Magic is a seasoned professional.
7. Which of the following columns is the text probably selected from?
A. Pet Pal Tales. B. Animal Behavior.
C. Conservation Insights. D. Horse Training Guidance.

How can anyone feel bored in a world with social media, streaming movies, and the ability to download just about every book in the world? It may sound paradoxical, but according to a study published in Communications Psychology by Katy Y. Y. Tam and Michael Inlicht, digital media does make us more bored.
Why am I bored all the time? According to researchers, here’s what’s happening. Given that we have access to entertainment whenever we like, the bar for what we consider entertaining or stimulating has increased. It’s like when someone is an addict and they keep needing more and more of the same substance to get the high they desire.
Another reason flipping through TikTok leaves you feeling bored and listless is that digital media divides our attention, making it hard to focus on the activity at hand — we quickly switch between videos and activities, our phones pulse and beep with notifications (通知), and texts pop up on the screen.
As we pointed out with the Dorito Theory a while back, sometimes experiences that aren’t fulfilling can still be maximally addictive. As we scroll (滚动浏览) and try to come across something that cures our boredom, it’s time to ask ourselves how we feel after the experience. Did logging in deliver the experience we thought we’d get? Or, did the crazy search for content keep us occupied until the boredom came back again?
“If people want a more enjoyable experience when watching videos, they can try to stay focused on the content and minimize digital switching, like paying for a more immersive experience in a movie theater. More enjoyment comes from immersing oneself in online videos rather than swiping through them,” Tam suggests. However, this may prove more complicated than years ago, as our attention spans are much shorter.
8. What does the underlined word “paradoxical” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Ignorant. B. Unfamiliar. C. Dangerous. D. Contradictory.
9. What makes people bored when using TikTok?
A. Lowered stimulation levels. B. Ineffectiveness in relaxation.
C. Constant interruptions of focus. D. Reduction in a sense of meaning.
10. What does Tam suggest readers do?
A. Purchase online videos. B. Engage in certain content.
C. Improve attention spans. D. Seek pleasant experiences.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Access to Entertainment Is Harmful
B. How the Dorito Theory Relates to Us in Life
C. Why Digital Media Contributes to Our Boredom
D. How Smartphone Addiction Affects Our Psychology
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. C

根据划线词上文“How can anyone feel bored in a world with social media, streaming movies, and the ability to download just about every book in the world?(在一个拥有社交媒体、在线电影播放以及几乎能下载世界范围内所有书籍的世界里,人们怎么会感到无聊呢?)”可知,在一个拥有社交媒体、流媒体电影,以及几乎能下载全球所有书籍的世界里,会有人感到无聊,这听起来是矛盾的。故划线词意思是“矛盾的”。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Another reason flipping through TikTok leaves you feeling bored and listless is that digital media divides our attention, making it hard to focus on the activity at hand — we quickly switch between videos and activities, our phones pulse and beep with notifications (通知), and texts pop up on the screen.(另一个让你在浏览 TikTok 时感到无聊和无精打采的原因是,数字媒体会分散我们的注意力,使得我们难以专注于当前的活动——我们会频繁地在不同的视频和活动中切换,手机上不断有通知提示响起,屏幕上还会不断弹出短信)”可知,使用TikTok时让人感到无聊的原因是持续的注意力干扰。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段““If people want a more enjoyable experience when watching videos, they can try to stay focused on the content and minimize digital switching, like paying for a more immersive experience in a movie theater. More enjoyment comes from immersing oneself in online videos rather than swiping through them,” Tam suggests.(塔姆建议道:“如果人们希望在观看视频时能获得更愉悦的体验,他们可以尝试专注于视频内容,并尽量减少频繁切换电子设备的操作,就像在电影院里为获得更沉浸式的观影体验而付费一样。更多的乐趣来自于全身心投入到在线视频中,而非随意翻阅浏览。”)”可知,塔姆建议读者参与某些内容。故选B。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“How can anyone feel bored in a world with social media, streaming movies, and the ability to download just about every book in the world?(在一个拥有社交媒体、在线电影播放以及几乎能下载世界范围内所有书籍的世界里,人们怎么会感到无聊呢?)”

A baby’s early life has a lot of milestones: first giggle (咯咯笑), first tooth, first step. A brain scanning study adds to the list: first memory.
Infants can form memories, and they use a memory structure in the brain called the hippocampus, a seahorse-shaped structure, to do it, researchers report in Science.
Young babies can be difficult research subjects. But for the new study, awake babies were kept calm in a functional MRI scanner with a parent nearby and earphones to protect them from alarming sounds. In the scanner, these babies, who ranged from 4 months old to nearly 25 months old, saw images, one after another, of people, places or objects. All the while, scientists recorded blood flow in the babies’ brains.
Occasionally, the babies were tested with a pair of images, one of which they had seen before. If the babies looked longer at the previously seen image, researchers reasoned, they likely remembered it. In the study, 13 babies were younger than a year, and 13 babies were older than a year. The older babies could remember about half of the images they had seen before. And this memory feat agreed with brain activity in a part of the hippocampus.
The results add to other evidence from earlier research that babies, the human sort as well as rats and mice, can in fact form memories, and start to answer how. Still, the results don’t explain why we can’t recall some of the earliest moments of our lives, a phenomenon known as infantile amnesia. It’s possible that these memories aren’t effectively stored elsewhere in the brain. Or it could be that neural (神经的) traces persist but aren’t able to be called back up.
12. How does the author present the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By providing data. B. By listing examples.
C. By analyzing a study. D. By quoting a scientist.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The process of the research. B. The function of the scanner.
C. The activities of the parents. D. The diversity of the subjects.
14. What makes scientists tell if babies remember an image?
A. Whether the image is seen previously.
B. Whether babies pay more attention to it.
C. Whether the image is shown long enough.
D. Whether babies reach over one year of age.
15. What can be inferred from the results?
A. This study refines relevant research to some extent.
B. Gradual brain damage leads to inability to remember.
C. The hippocampus determines mammals’ learning ability.
D. Rats and mice are good at storing the earliest memories.
【答案】12 B 13. A 14. B 15. A

Building strength helps you stay healthy as well as fit. Try these ways to make the most of your muscles.
● Use it or lose it.
We start to lose muscle mass from the age of 30, but it’s never too late to improve it. If you do, it can help with your balance, reduce your risk of falls, increase bone density, which will help guard against osteoporosis (骨质疏松), and benefit heart health too. ___16___
● Start small.
___17___ There’s no need to go to the gym and lift dumbbells or kettlebells if that’s not your thing.
You can use your own body weight to build strength. There are plenty of free beginners’ workouts on YouTube and on the NHS website. And resistance bands — stretchy elastic strips (弹性带) — are just as good. ___18___ They come in different tension levels. Don’t forget to have rest days to allow your body to recover.
● Pack the protein.
Building strength isn’t all about getting physical. ___19___ Protein is key. Include it in all your meals in the form of lean meat, fish, beans, tofu, eggs or dairy produce. Focus on mixing protein and carb, such as fruit, rice, sweet potato and quinoa, as these will help with muscle growth.
● ___20___
Exercising with others will help you stay motivated and it’s always nice to be with like-minded people. Find yourself an exercise buddy, such as a friend or family member; do live Zoom classes or go to in-real-life gym classes.
A. Be sociable.
B. Create a motivation.
C. Meanwhile, you should eat well.
D. Or maybe it’s just all of those combined.
E. In fact, they may make you less subject to injury.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My grandmother always said, “Can’t never could until he tried.” My mother took up this mantra (咒语) and recited it to me many times during my childhood. She normally used it to try and push me into doing something I didn’t want to do. It was like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Irritating as it was, it took root.
Many years ago, my husband was downsized out of his job, leaving us with a single income — mine. We were a two-income family with two-income bills and two children to support. He had been given a generous severance (解雇金), but that money would only last so long. Just when it looked like things couldn’t get any worse, they did. I lost my job too.
While my husband was out pounding the pavement, knocking on doors, making calls and scanning the papers for another job, I stayed home and did my best to figure out how to make the most of every cent. It was often difficult to maintain a hopeful, positive attitude, but we did our best.
Anxious about our situation, I tried to think of something that I could do to earn some money. Even a little would help. One day I had lunch with a former coworker who insisted that I would be great at teaching computer classes. I had used word processing software extensively at my former job and was definitely an expert, but could I sell that skill? Was it possible that people would actually pay me to teach them? The only teaching I had ever done was in Sunday School. I remembered my mother’s mantra — Can’t never could until he tried.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Recalling my Sunday School teaching experience, I contacted the community.

To my surprise, my computer class was in great demand.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Recalling my Sunday School teaching experience, I contacted the community. Fortunately, I received an immediate and enthusiastic response. For days I prepared relentlessly, rehearsing lessons aloud to an empty living room, my voice growing steadier with each repetition. When the first class began, I saw my own nervousness reflected in the students’ faces. But as I guided them through opening their first document, their concentrated expressions slowly softened into smiles of triumph. In that moment, I felt my mother’s mantra transform from childhood irritation to profound truth.
To my surprise my computer class was in great demand. Seeing the growing need for digital skills, I developed an online course mainly teaching elderly people how to use computers and the Internet. With more and more people registering for my course, the additional income helped stabilize our family’s finances and I gradually found myself immersed in the interest of education which became my lifelong career ultimately. What began as a desperate attempt to survive became a journey of self-discovery. I had tried despite my fears, and in doing so, realized I could not only endure but thrive.

6. What does Magic’s performance in Para.3 show?

A This study refines relevant research to some extent.
B. Gradual brain damage leads to inability to remember.
C. The hippocampus determines mammals’ learning ability.
D. Rats and mice are good at storing the earliest memories.

Many years ago my husband was downsized out of his job, leaving us with a single income — mine.
