It was the morning of my final audition (试镜) to play Harry Potter in 2000. Instead of practicing, I spent half an hour styling my hair, hoping to impress (留下深刻印象) the Hollywood producers. However, getting the lead role in one of the biggest film series required more than just a good hairstyle. During the audition, I nervously stumbled (结巴) over my lines and looked into one of the producers’ eyes. He smiled, but I could tell he had already made his decision.
My story began in 1998 when I first read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and quickly became a big fan. The next year, I heard there were auditions for the movie, open to British kids of my age. Even though I didn’t have much acting experience, I thought I could give it a try. In the first audition, there were about 300 other kids. After my performance, a director said to my mum in a low voice, “He’s quite good.” But weeks passed and I didn’t get any news.
Months later, I got a call to audition at Leavesden where the films would be made. I practiced two scenes for weeks, but during the audition, I felt shy and nervous, even forgetting my lines. As I left, I knew I didn’t get the part. I was sad and regretted not trying harder. I was also worried about what my classmates would think.
Not getting the role wasn’t the end of the world, but that mix of sadness, regret and embarrassment was hard to shake. I’m glad I was able to experience all those ups and downs, which turned out to be valuable training for my future life.

Have you heard of microplastics (微塑料)? Can we see them in our daily life? Are they good or bad for human beings?
Microplastics are very small. According to National Geographic, microplastics are usually less than five millimeters (毫米) in size. But they bring big problems. This small size lets them go everywhere, even in water and air. They don’t break down easily and can stay in the environment for hundreds of years. A new study said that by 2040, microplastic pollution could be twice as bad as it is now.
Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic. They come from many places. For example about 60 percent of material made into clothes is plastic. Every time the clothes are washed, they produce microplastics. When water bottles and other big plastic products are left outside, they break down slowly into microplastics. These microplastics can be bad for our health and even cause cancer. In August, The Conversation reported that scientists found microplastics in people’s brains for the first time. They may hurt brain cells (细胞) and change how the brain works.
Wild animals are also at risk from microplastic pollution. Each year, up to three million tons of plastics end up in the ocean. As they break down day by day, they become virtually invisible gradually (逐渐地). Fish may eat them by mistake and become very sick.
To deal with the problem, scientists think the best way right now is to make and use less plastic. As students, we can reduce plastic things in our daily life, such as using glass or metal cups instead of plastic bottles and cups.

Teenagers are known for being full of new ideas. Let’s have a look at these teenage inventions (发明) that might change the world.

31. Why did the writer spend half an hour styling his hair on the morning of the final audition?
A. Because he loved styling his hair.
B. Because his mother asked him to do so.
C. Because he had nothing else to do.
D. Because he thought it would help him get the role.
32. When did the writer first read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?

Nowadays watching live streaming (直播) shows has become part of people’s lives. At the same time, traditional culture has found a bigger stage online. Many traditional artists are starting to live stream on platforms like Douyin and Bilibili. Some of them sing Peking Opera, some make paper cutting, while others perform Chinese classical music. A growing number of young people are starting to become more interested in traditional culture because of live streaming.
Li Jun is a Peking Opera performer from the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company. The 59-year-old took up his smart phone and started live streaming. Unlike performing on a real stage, Li uses common places as his stage, including his office and study room. Except singing, Li also teaches viewers (观众) about Peking Opera. People can ask him questions and get answers directly. “Live streaming has brought this traditional art down to earth.” One viewer said, “It gives young people an easier way to learn more about the traditional art.” Li has more than 6,000 fans on Douyin, while one of his videos got 42,000 views on Bilibili.
On March 26th, 2024, Bilibili live streamed a huafu show on the third China Huafu Day. Performers showed clothes in traditional Chinese styles, including those from Wei, Tang and Ming dynasties.
For example, about 60 percent of material made into clothes is plastic.
