专题05 阅读理解之说明文 Passage 1(2025·江苏盐城·中考真题) What do you think will happen if you draw a picture with crayons and cover up that picture with paint? Now follow the steps below to find out the answer. What you need *crayons of different colours *drawing paper *blue poster paint *a small bowl *a cup filled with water *a paintbrush How to do it Step 1      Think about a scene under the sea with different-coloured fish and sea plants. And then draw the fish and sea plants with your crayons. The more colours you use, the better your picture will be.   Step 2      Pour a little blue paint into the bowl. Add a bit of water and stir (搅拌) to make your paint a little thinner.   Step 3      Dip your brush into the blue paint in the bowl. Cover your whole picture with the blue paint. What happens? You have sea plants and animals living in a blue sea! Why it happens      Your crayons are made of wax (蜡). Wax resists, or stays away from the paint. That’s why it does not cover the picture. So your sea plants and fish are still there. 1.Which tool is needed for Step 1? A.A paintbrush. B.Different crayons. C.A small bowl. D.Some blue paint. 2.Which picture shows what you do in Step 2? A. B. C. D. 3.What does the underlined word “it” in the last part mean? A.Paper. B.Water. C.The bowl. D.The paint. Passage 2(2025·江苏淮安·中考真题) If you search for places of beauty, wetlands probably won’t be high on your list. Wetlands are areas of land that are often completely wet with water. Although they might not look very pretty, the roles that they play in nature might go beyond many people’s imagination. Wetlands appear naturally in almost every part of the world. There are many different types of wetlands on Earth. Along with rainforests, they are among the most diverse (多样的) places on Earth. Besides natural wetlands, humans are also creating man-made ones for a number of purposes about water management. One of the main advantages of wetlands is that they can prevent floods. They do so by storing water for a certain time and then slowly releasing (释放) it over time. Wetlands operate similarly to a sponge (海绵). When it rains heavily and water levels rise, they take in the extra water which may cause floods. This prevents water from entering rivers and streams. Then, when water levels become low later, they will release it. In many cases, wetlands offer a much more natural way than dams (坝). However, it’s important to note that wetlands, like dams, don’t stop all dangers from flooding. Once there is a very heavy rainfall, wetlands may fill up and any extra water will start to run off. Wetlands also play a part in cleaning water. Farming actions and city waste are main causes of water pollution. Wetlands include plants and organisms that can reduce this pollution by clearing out unwanted things. Wetlands have other advantages for the environment as well. They can help to feed nearby fish populations by releasing something that can be used as food for them into rivers. Also, many animals like frogs use wetlands as baby-raising grounds because they provide the place for catching food and the water required. Some birds also come to the wetlands for food and shelter. Although wetlands may not look pretty, it’s clear that they are able to do the important work which is necessary to make sure that the circle of life remains unbroken. 4.Why does the writer mention “sponge” in Paragraph 3? A.To explain the flood-preventing work of wetlands. B.To describe the sponge’s feature of storing water. C.To show the wetlands can take in water quickly like a sponge. D.To compare the similar points between wetlands and a sponge. 5.What can we learn about wetlands from the passage? A.People create man-made wetlands to deal with water. B.People praise wetlands for natural beauty. C.Wetlands can solve the pollution problems. D.Wetlands can completely prevent the dangers caused by floods. 6.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? A.Wetlands—Circle of Life B.Wetlands—Home of Living Things C.Wetlands—Friend of Earth D.Wetlands—Cleaner of Environment Passage 3(2025·江苏无锡·中考真题) Brazilian artist Vik Muniz uses everyday objects in unusual ways. Through his art, Muniz makes people think differently about their everyday lives-even their own rubbish. In 2007, Muniz worked on a two-year project at one of the world’s largest landfills. Until its closure in 2012, Jardim Gramacho received about 70 percent of the rubbish from Rio de Janeiro. About 3,000 rubbish pickers, known as catadores, worked there. Their job was to hunt through the rubbish for recyclable cans, bottles, and other materials. They then made money by selling the objects to recycling companies. The catadores’ work was dirty and dangerous, and most of them only received between $20 and $25 a day. Despite the hard conditions, many catadores were proud of their work. Valter Dos Santos, a worker at Jardim Gramacho for more than 25 years, told Muniz, “I am proud to be a picker. I try to explain to people that recycling prevents great harm to nature and the environment. People sometimes say, ‘But one single soda can?’ One single can is of great importance! That single can will make the difference.” Muniz became friends with Dos Santos and other catadores. They allowed him to take their photographs at the landfill, where they posed for artistic portraits. For example, Muniz photographed a landfill worker in the style of a famous French painting. The workers then helped Muniz create huge images of these photos on the floor of his workshop. They used materials from the landfill to add color and depth to the images. ________ Muniz says he wanted to “change the lives of people with the same materials they deal with every day.” A photograph of his recreation of the French painting sold for £28,000 ($50,000) at a London art auction. Muniz gave the money to the catadores workers’ organization. In 2010, a movie called Waste Land was made about Muniz’s project. The film received many awards and helped make people aware of the rubbish collectors’ lives. The catadores also began to see themselves differently. “Sometimes we see ourselves as so small,” says Irma, a cook at Gramacho, “but people out there see us as so big, so beautiful.” 7.Why did the writer mention Valter Dos Santos? A.To tell the story of a catador’s life. B.To describe the catadores’ hard conditions. C.To show the value of a catador’s work. D.To give an example of successful catadores. 8.What can we learn about Muniz’s photographs? A.They were all taken at the landfill. B.He spent a long time on each of them. C.They were only part of his unusual creation. D.He took them in the style of famous paintings. 9.Which of the following is the most suitable for ________? A.Why take such photos of these catadores? B.Why create such huge images using rubbish? C.How to help these people in a creative way? D.How to turn everyday objects into art pieces? 10.Which of the following shows the right order of the things that happened? a. A movie was made about Muniz’s project. b. Gramacho stopped receiving rubbish. c. Dos Santos started working at Gramacho. d. Muniz made friends with some catadores. A.d-c-b-a. B.c-d-b-a. C.d-c-a-b. D.c-d-a-b. Passage 4(2025·江苏南通·中考真题) Sports might have started as a way to survive. Long ago, people ran, jumped, and climbed to stay alive. Hunters were known for their special skills. Wall paintings from centuries ago, showing activities like wrestling or dancing, were found in an Egyptian tomb. The ancient Greeks made a big change by holding the first Olympic Games. Modern sports began in England in the early 19th century and then spread globally. These became the models for sports such as football that we play now. Sports come in many shapes and sizes. Organized sports, whether swimming or ice hockey, are serious forms of play. There are rules to obey, skills and positions to learn, and plans to carry out. Team sports like soccer require you to work with teammates, while individual (个人的) sports such as tennis focus on your personal performance. There’s no doubt that sports are valuable. The American Academy of Pediatrics says play is important for kids’ and teens’ thinking, bodies, social lives and feelings. Sports exercise our bodies and teach us about ourselves and our world. Organized sports get us using our bodies and minds, which makes us more imaginative, curious, and creative. The skills we learn can help us in school and later at work. In an ideal world, sports would always be fun. But in reality, sports can cause physical hurt like broken bones, and also harm in mind. In team sports, misunderstandings and hurt feelings are part of the learning process. Sports are supposed to bring people together, but they can also drive people apart. But even when they’re not always a cheerful experience, they show us how to face life’s challenges. You don’t have to be on a school team. But many, like school coaches, have found ways to make play their work, which makes them feel whole. There’s no better place to play and learn about the world than on a sports field. No matter what sport you choose, the key is to play for fun. When you do, you’re already a winner. 11.In which part of a newspaper can we probably read this passage? A.Travel. B.Nature. C.Technology. D.Entertainment. 12.Why is play important for teenagers according to the passage? A.It reduces their physical hurt easily. B.It improves their mind and body health. C.It helps them have more time for sleep. D.It teaches them how to win competitions. 13.Which of the following is the writer’s opinion? A.People should try to become a famous athlete. B.People can play mainly for fun and enjoyment. C.Trying team sports is better than individual ones. D.Avoiding sports that cause hurt is the best choice. 14.What may be the best title for the passage? A.The Styles of Sports B.The History of Sports C.The Charm of Sports D.The Challenges of Sports Passage 5(2025·江苏南通·中考真题) ①Do you sometimes feel too afraid to try new things? If you want to grow and get better, you need to take risks and challenge yourself. But your brain often tells you to stay safe. It might say, “Don’t bother trying something new.” Even when these thoughts aren’t reasonable, our anxiety (担心) can still win. Instead of thinking about the good things that could happen, we worry more about “What if something goes wrong?” ②Avoiding all risks might seem smart, but it can make you feel unhappy. The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts. We think, “The more scared I feel, the riskier it is.” But feelings aren’t always reasonable. If we knew how to think about risks clearly, we’d know which risks are worth taking. For example, trying a new hobby like painting might feel scary at first, but it could bring you joy and new skills. ③Whether you’re afraid to change your job or too nervous to ask a friend for coffee, learning to take “good risks” can improve your life. Here are good ways to help. ④Balance feelings with facts. Many times, we think fear means something risky. But that’s not true. For example, driving a car feels safe because we do it every day, but giving a speech in public might make your heart beat fast. Yet the fact shows that car accidents are much more common than getting hurt while speaking! So before you avoid doing something scary, take three deep breaths and ask yourself, “What’s the real risk here?” ⑤Take steps to succeed. You can do many small things to lower risks. If you’re nervous about a test, make a study plan and review each day—this helps you feel more prepared. It’s okay to feel butterflies in your stomach when you try something new. Facing fear helps build your mental muscle, just like exercising builds physical muscle. So, taking smart risks helps you become mentally stronger. Each time you try something scary, you will learn to deal with uncertainty and anxiety. You’ll also get new skills and grow from mistakes. If you try out for a dance team and don’t make it, you can ask for the reason and then practise more. With practice, you’ll get better at facing risks, and your chances of success will rise. 15.Which of the following is TRUE according to the first two paragraphs? A.Avoiding risks is a smart way to stay happy. B.Taking risks requires us to trust our feelings. C.Our brain often tells us to face challenges bravely. D.Our feelings often influence us to make decisions. 16.What does the underlined phrase “build your mental muscle” mean in the last paragraph? A.Develop strength in your mind. B.Exercise your body to stay healthy. C.Think mainly about cheerful things. D.Avoid situations that make you afraid. 17.What is the structure of this passage? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2...) A. B. C. D. 18.What is the main idea of the passage? A.Taking smart risks can push us forward. B.Trying many small things can reduce risks. C.Learning clearly about real risks can help a lot. D.Practising more can help deal with risks better. Passage 6(2025·江苏常州·中考真题) For those whose hearts often go off beat, pacemakers (心脏起搏器) are life savers. By providing a small electrical support at the right moment, they can keep a heart working properly. Their main problem is that they use batteries. Even the best of them will run out of energy, and changing the batteries requires operations. Since operations are usually best avoided, the search has been on for long-lasting batteries. Different choices have been explored for a long time. Today, pacemakers with lithium (锂) batteries last between 5 and 15 years. Zhang Hao, from Shanghai Second Military Medical University, and Yang Bin, from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, tried a way to refill a pacemaker’s battery with electricity (电) by getting energy from inside the body. They report in the magazine ACS Nano that they have also used the heart muscle (肌肉) itself to work. Earlier efforts by other scientists to use heart muscle power to run pacemakers depend on piezoelectric materials (压电材料). These materials can be connected to a beating heart and produce electricity when they are slightly deformed (弯曲). This has worked, but not well enough: the output has rarely been over 5 microwatts (微瓦), while most pacemakers require at least ten. Dr Zhang and Dr Yang believed that they could improve matters by making their piezoelectric materials more dramatically deformed, and then produce 15 microwatts, because the more deformed, the more electricity will be produced. They put their idea to the test in a 50kg pig. It made enough electricity for the pacemaker to work as expected. Whether such an idea will pass human tests remains to be seen. But if it does, the days of pacemakers that need battery changes through operations may not last long. 19.According to the first two paragraphs, what is a problem with pacemakers? A.They often go off beat. B.Their energy can be used up. C.Operations often influence them. D.They sometimes do harm to hearts. 20.From this passage, what do we know about piezoelectric materials? A.They can be used to produce electricity. B.They can deform the heart to make it beat faster. C.They were first used by Zhang Hao and Yang Bin. D.They were proved to produce 15 microwatts in human tests. 21.What does the word “dramatically” in the 4th paragraph most probably mean? A.Comfortably. B.Safely. C.Greatly. D.Rapidly. 22.What is the best title for this article? A.No Need to Use Pacemakers B.The Problem with Piezoelectric Materials C.The Contribution of Chinese Scientists to Heart Operations D.Chinese Scientists Found a New Way to Improve Pacemakers Passage 7(2025·江苏常州·中考真题) Citizen science is when public volunteers take part in scientific projects by collecting information or monitoring (监测) possible problems and then report their findings back to research groups. When finishing his coffee, Jim checked text messages on his phone. Then, he got his bag and went to the nearest railway station. He wasn’t there to take the train, though. Instead, Jim chose one of the public bicycles lined up outside the station. After unlocking a bike with a smart card, he set out for his job on the other side of the city. He joined other cyclists in the bike lanes (道), safely separated from car traffic. Amsterdam wasn’t always bicycle friendly. In fact, cycling used to be dangerous, especially during the second half of the twentieth century. This was a time of rapid growth in Amsterdam. As people got richer, they were able to afford expensive goods such as cars. For the first time, driving became popular. Highways were built for cars. This meant there was less space for cyclists. Having had a long tradition of cycling, this was a big change for the city. As car traffic increased, so did the number of biking accidents. Many of the cyclists were children. People in Amsterdam were angry. They organized protests (抗议) in the city streets. Government officers listened. Hoping to solve the problem quickly, they started to think of ways to make the city safe for cyclists again. Soon there were separate bike lanes, and some areas were closed to cars forever. The changes were so effective (有效的) that today Amsterdam is a model of biking safety for other cities around the world. 26.How does the writer start the passage? A.By comparing two places. B.By describing a scene. C.By answering a question. D.By listing a number. 27.Why did Jim go to the nearest railway station on work day morning? A.To work there. B.To take the train. C.To see a friend. D.To ride a bike. 28.What does the passage tell about Amsterdam? A.It has no highways for cars. B.It is always bicycle friendly. C.It seldom sees changes. D.It is famous for biking safety. 29.What type of book is the passage probably taken from? A.Science fiction. B.Romantic novel. C.City culture. D.Detective story. Passage 9(2025·江苏宿迁·中考真题) Where does the water in our homes come from? How do people change sea water into fresh water? How does water come into our homes? This passage will answer these questions. In most places, people get their water from lakes and rivers. The water is usually seen all year round. In some places, people get their water from under the ground. They use wells to get the water. In some other places, windmills (风车) are used to get water from under the ground. In some country areas away from the city water supply, people collect rainwater that falls on their roofs (房顶). Pipes from the roofs lead the water into tanks (罐子). The water from rainwater tanks is usually clean enough to drink. In some countries that are in need of water, fresh water is made from sea water in special treatment factories. This is called desalination (脱盐). In most treatment factories, salt water is heated until it turns into steam (蒸汽) and the salt is left behind. When the steam is cooled, it becomes fresh water. Only a little salt is left in the fresh water. This makes the water taste better and also stops the pure water taking salts and minerals (矿物质) out of our bodies. Have you seen tanks or towers on the tops of buildings? These tanks or towers are used for storing clean water. Before the water is put into these tanks or towers, it goes to a water treatment factory. Some water from rivers or lakes is not clean. If we drink it directly, we may be ill. In the water treatment factory, workers make the water clean and safe for people to drink. Then pipes bring the water to our homes. Water is very important for all living things, but sometimes there is not enough water. We should use water wisely. 30.How does the writer begin the passage? A.By comparing ideas. B.By giving examples. C.By asking questions. D.By explaining reasons. 31.Where do people in most places get water from? A.Lakes and rivers. B.Lakes and underground water. C.Rivers and rainwater. D.Rainwater and underground water. 32.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to (指代)? A.Rainwater. B.Salt water. C.Fresh water. D.Pure water. 33.What are tanks or towers used for according to the passage? A.Storing salt. B.Storing pipes. C.Storing minerals. D.Storing clean water. Passage 10(2025·江苏苏州·中考真题) A medical breakthrough in China is giving new hope to people with spinal cord injuries (脊髓损伤). Scientists have created a brain-spinal chip (芯片) that allows paralyzed (瘫痪的) patients to move their legs, and even walk again. The chip, only 1mm wide, is designed to be fitted into the brain and spinal cord. If the natural communication between the brain and muscles (肌肉) is lost, this chip becomes the bridge. When the chips work, they create a direct connection between the brain and muscles. The results have been amazing. A 34-year-old man, paralyzed after a fall, could move his legs just one day after the operation on January 8, 2025. Two weeks later, he walked five meters with help. Three other patients had similar operations in February and March, all getting better within weeks. Even though the patients’ nervous systems were damaged (受损), the chips helped them walk again. This marks a big step in China’s progress in medical science and it brings hope for over 3.7 million people in China. “This is just the beginning,” Jia, the lead researcher, says. “With the technology, these people may one day leave wheelchairs behind after 3 to 5 years of training.” Behind this achievement is a long journey of careful research and bold thinking. It took the researchers over 10 years to develop the chip. They tested it on animals first, and then on people. They faced many challenges, yet they never gave up. Step by step, they developed a system to reconnect the mind and body in ways once appearing only in science fiction. As the chip continues to improve, it lights a new path forward—one built on science, shaped by care, and aimed toward a brighter future. 34.What do we know about the chips mentioned in the passage? A.They are only as wide as 2 mm. B.They are fitted into the man’s arms. C.They help the patients walk again. D.They improve the patients’ memory. 35.Which of the following meanings is suitable for the underlined word “bold”? bold /bəʊld/ adj. 1. PERSON/ACTION not afraid of taking risks and making difficult decisions: He had the ability to take bold imaginative decisions. 2. COLOURS/SHAPES very strong or bright so that you notice them: Stripes are bold, bright, and fun to wear. 3. LINES/WRITING written or drawn in a very clear way: The print should be bold and easy to read. 4. PRINTED LETTERS printed in letters that are darker and thicker than ordinary printed letters: All the headings are in bold type. (From the dictionary) A.1. B.2. C.3. D.4. 36.What is the writer’s main reason for writing this passage? A.To recommend a science story. B.To report a pioneer doctor in medicine. C.To compare different treatments. D.To introduce a new medical success. 37.What would be the best title of this passage? A.China’s Chips Bring New Hope B.Future of China’s Medical Science C.Science Fiction Changes Our Lives D.Challenges for Chinese Scientists Passage 11(2025·江苏扬州·中考真题) Many marine species (海洋物种) depend on specific routes to migrate (迁徙). The routes offer these seafaring travellers the right conditions, at the right time of year, to guide them through the oceans. We humans try to discover the routes and have drawn our own lines, but they are not clear to us because of unexpected changes in nature. To find out the routes that migratory marine species regularly take, a research team of scientists in Australia and the US have now created an interactive map that shows the paths connecting ocean habitats (栖息地). The new map, named the Migratory Connectivity in the Ocean (MiCO), collects data and makes it easier for scientists to see where migratory marine species may be falling into the paths. The database (数据库) includes information on 109 species, based on around 30 years of data, and shows where they are going to and from—including which species cross into whose national waters. “MiCO connects almost 2, 000 important habitats and shows the importance of cross-boundary teamwork,” says the research team. They find that all of the species recorded in MiCO have less protection at some point in their life history because of different situations in different countries. That means no country is able to fully protect migratory species if there is no help from others. “For example, green turtles nest in Costa Rica and migrate north through Nicaragua and out to islands in the Caribbean,” the team says. “Although largely protected in Costa Rica, it is allowed to fish for turtles in Nicaragua and huge numbers are lost off the coast there every year.” MiCO works to provide useful knowledge on migratory connectivity to help protect marine species. In 2023, a UN report found climate (气候) changes are having bad influence on migratory species. MiCO catches the information from different time periods and the team hopes it may be used to tell those changes in connectivity. MiCO is also expected to collect information on more migratory marine species because there is less than one-third of data collected now. “So far, the migratory information revealed within the MiCO system only touches the surface of the true connectivity of the global oceans,” the team says. 38.How does the writer lead in the topic? A.By offering advice. B.By presenting study results. C.By expressing opinions. D.By giving background information. 39.What is MiCO? A.A map that humans draw to look for marine species. B.A route which guides marine species through the oceans. C.A database that shows the lines marine species migrate along. D.A system which scientists use for researches on temperature changes. 40.Why does the writer take the example of green turtles? A.To prove the harm in fishing for migratory species. B.To show the importance of cross-country teamwork. C.To share the methods of marine species protection. D.To explain the reason for marine species to migrate. 41.Which of the following can be the data MiCO collects? A.Over 10 laws are made on marine species protection. B.There are mainly 3 elephant species living on the earth. C.Leatherback turtles travel about 20,000 km from Indonesia to Oregon. D.Thousands of people visit the whale shark habitat in South Africa every year. Passage 12(2025·江苏连云港·中考真题) Saturn (土星) is famous for the beautiful rings around it. Now, it’s getting attention for being even more amazing. Scientists have discovered 128 new moons around Saturn, bringing the planet’s total to 274. A moon is any naturally formed object that moves around a planet. Moons come in different shapes and sizes. Scientists discovered the moons with a powerful telescope (望远镜), which is used to study stars and planets in great detail. Scientists took many photos of areas in space and piled them on top of each other to make the moons appear bright enough to discover. Most of Saturn’s new moons are small objects, just one or two miles wide—quite different to Earth’s Moon, which is a 2,159-mile-wide ball. These space rocks are in unusual orbits (轨道) too. They go around Saturn in the opposite direction to its own movement. At between 6.5 million and 18 million miles away from the ringed planet, the newly discovered moons are also further away than Saturn’s biggest moon, Titan. Why does Saturn have so many moons while Earth only has one? According to scientists, several billion years ago, the giant planet’s gravity attracted some rocks and ice. Over time, some of them crashed against each other, breaking into smaller pieces or coming together to create many small moons. The new moons were first discovered in 2023 by a team of scientists led by Edward Ashton, and were recently confirmed by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). Saturn now is the planet with the most moons—Jupiter is not far behind with 95. However, Dr Ashton believes this might be the limit for moon discovery. “I don’t think Jupiter will ever catch up,” he said. “With present technology, I don’t think we can do better than what has already been done,” he added. 42.What do we know about the new discovery? A.Newly found moons look the same. B.Scientists found new moons by accident. C.Saturn’s rings attract many scientists. D.128 new moons were found around Saturn. 43.What does “the ringed planet” in Paragraph 3 refer to? A.Earth. B.Saturn. C.Moon. D.Titan. 44.What led to the large number of Saturn’s moons? A.The size of the planet. B.The weights of the moons. C.The orbit of the planet. D.The crashes of the moons. 45.What can we learn from Dr Ashton’s words in the last paragraph? A.Jupiter will soon catch up with Saturn. B.Saturn’s new moons might support life. C.The IAU presented a medal to his team. D.He is satisfied with their moon discovery. Passage 13(2025·江苏扬州·中考真题) Have you ever wondered what else you can do on the train besides sleeping or scrolling through your phone? Actually, in China, trains have turned into centres which bring together the public and the nation’s intangible cultural Heritage (ICH,非物质文化遗产). Trains go across China and they are becoming ideal places for introducing local traditional culture. A good example is the K7041 train from Harbin to Mohe in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province. On the ICH train, Gulayier, dressed in traditional clothes, sang Oroqen folk songs and his partner played the Oroqen jaw harp, a musical instrument. Tourists on the train, especially those from southern China, sang and danced excitedly with the two performers (表演者) together. Gulayier said the train made it easier to hold tourists’ attention to his shows. He thought the train was a good platform for promoting (促进) ICH. Traditional heritage comes to life on trains. More ICH such as Qinhuai lanterns from Nanjing, Yulin puppet shows, and tea-picking operas in Guangxi has also made appearances on high-speed trains across China. It offers passengers a close-up way to experience traditional culture. Professor Xiao Fang from Beijing Normal University shares Gulayier’s opinion on the new use of ICH trains. He has pointed out another advantage of this. Beyond cultural promotion, it offers help for tourism. When passengers enjoy local traditions on board, they often develop a deeper interest in exploring the places they pass through. However, the ICH train journeys still have challenges, including the narrow space on trains and passengers getting on and off at each station. D.Lake Huron. 52.Alex finds something missing in Part 3. Which of the following will he put in the empty box? A.Value. B.Change. C.Protection. D.Development. Passage 15(2024·江苏南京·中考真题) A new study suggests that roosters can recognize themselves in a mirror (镜子). Scientists use the “mark test” to test whether an animal can recognize itself. A mark is put on an animal, usually in a spot that can only be seen in a mirror. Then the animal is allowed to look in a mirror. If the animal seems to pay attention to the mark, scientists believe the animal has recognized itself. The list of animals who can recognize themselves in a mirror isn’t long. The skill has mainly been found in animals with large brains, like dolphins, chimpanzees and elephants. Until recently, only one kind of bird had passed the test. Scientists at the University of Bonn in Germany recently ran the mark test on roosters. They put a pink triangle (三角形) on the chests of the roosters. But when the roosters looked in a mirror, they didn’t seem to notice the mark. The scientists then needed a different way to test whether the roosters could recognize themselves. When there’s danger—like a hawk (鹰) flying above—roosters make loud calls to warn nearby chickens. But roosters only make the cries if other chickens can hear them. If they’re alone, they remain quiet so the hawk won’t see them. The scientists realized that they could use the shadow (影子) of a hawk to test whether or not the roosters thought they were alone—even when they could see “another” chicken in a mirror. First, the scientists let the roosters spend time getting used to being in a closed-in space and having a mirror around. Then, they ran several tests by making a hawk shadow appear above a rooster and watching how it reacted. When there was no mirror, the roosters reacted as usual. It called out when it was near another rooster (Picture ▲ ), but remained quiet when it was alone. But when a rooster was in a space where it could see itself in the mirror, it wasn’t fooled into thinking there was another rooster. It remained silent under the hawk shadow. It did this even if there was a rooster hidden behind the mirror. The scientists say the results show that the roosters knew they were seeing themselves in the mirror, and not other roosters. 53.What is the purpose of the “mark test”? A.To test a bird’s ability to fly. B.To measure an animal’s brain size. C.To see if an animal can recognize itself. D.To compare different animals’ intelligence. 54.What does the underlined word “them” refer to? A.Hawks. B.Roosters. C.Chickens. D.Scientists. 55.Which of the following pictures can be put into ▲ ? A. B. C. D. 56.What can we infer from the passage? A.Roosters prefer to make no sounds when it faces danger alone. B.Roosters are not as smart as dolphins, chimpanzees and elephants. C.The mark test can exactly tell if an animal can recognize itself in the mirror. D.When seeing its image in the mirror, the rooster thinks there’s another rooster. Researchers have found the health benefits of dancing for people in poor health condition, from improving brain health to creating community. Becky is teaching a group of 80 adults some dancing skills. Many of her students are seated in the dancing room because they have difficulty in moving. When they are following Becky’s pretty movements, a sense of peace comes over them. Dance as a medicine Helen, a researcher, says that dance requires different parts of the brain to work at the same time, that is to say, dance requires more “brain power” than simpler repetitive (重复的) exercises. She invited two groups of adults to take part in programmes for over six months. One group practised dancing and the other did a traditional exercise like cycling. Both groups improved their level of physical fitness, but the group of dancers improved more cognitive abilities, such as memory, attention and high-level thinking. Dance described by Helen as “pleasure double-play” can lift the mood and reduce stress. Dance as body acceptance Besides the physical and mental benefits, dance can also help people with diseases accept what their bodies can and can’t do. Jenny is Becky’s student. Her body went numb when she was in her mid-twenties. She had no feelings from the knees down. She suffered from serious muscle tightness and balance problems, making standing and walking difficult for her. Jenny recently joined an online dance programme. Not only has it improved her coordination (协调性). but it has enabled her to overcome her fear of being judged (评价) for how she moves, both in the dance class and out in the world. “I see so many people moving like me,” she says “I don’t have to be perfect in my dancing or make sure my leg lifts this way—it makes me comfortable with where I am right now.” Dance as community Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of dance is the sense of community it creates. Dancing with others not only makes people feel less different in their moving abilities, but also helps to fight against loneliness and problems in getting along with others. Becky started teaching more than 22 years ago, and she has helped 300 communities in 28 countries around the world. In some countries, such as India and South Kores, people have put their own cultural dance styles into their classes. Becky wants to create a sense of family and community for this group of people. Whenever and wherever she teaches, she hopes to make them feel joyful, get much closer to the community, and explore the limitless possibilities for the rest of their lives. 60.In which part of the website may you find this passage? A.Jenny feels sad because she is weak in dancing. B.Jenny wants to be perfect after practising dancing. C.Jenny accepts the disabilities of her body after dancing. D.Jenny thinks she should treat her leg for better dancing. 63.What’s the best title for this passage? A.Dancing helps to cure illness B.Dancing helps to better yourself C.Dancing helps to change moods D.Dancing helps to reduce loneliness Passage 18(2024·江苏南通·中考真题) Some people think creativity is making something completely new, so they do not think of themselves as creative ones. However, some other people think creativity can just be expressing themselves through everyday acts and they are born creative because it is not an all-or-nothing quality or skill. Whether or not we realize it, we all have the ability to express creativity. Sometimes the path to creative productivity is being willing to do something different. Are you someone who loves to read comics? Perhaps it is time you create one of your own. Don’t worry if you cannot draw very well or feel that you cannot write humorous reports for characters. Nobody says this is an exam! You only have to please yourself, to gain the satisfaction that you try something new, all on your own. If you feel easy, you can of course share it with our loved ones, or post it on social media, Are you someone who likes to express yourself in writing? Try writing a blog. This is like the new version of a diary. In your blog, you can write about your thoughts, opinions and experiences. You can also write stories or plays, if you feel up to it! The blog provides you with a platform to create something new every day, in written forms. Are you someone who likes to be alone? Now, think about the things that make you happy. Find a small place in your room, or any place in your home, where you can spend time with yourself. It can be a small corner next to your bed or a wall. It can be a poster of your favourite rock star or photos of your friends. You can also pick a guitar if you like to play instruments, or a few storybooks if you love reading. Some of you may like flowers, candles or pretty things. Decorate your area with your favourite things in any way you like. That is creativity! And if you do feel bored with this, you can change, add or remove something. By realizing the chances in our daily lives to inspire our creativity, no matter how small, we may become more comfortable with taking bigger creative leaps in other aspects of our lives. 64.How does the writer begin the article? A.offer us all kinds of ideas and experiences B.teach us knowledge of different life skills C.encourage us to make something important D.ask us to develop creativity through small acts Passage 19(2024·江苏淮安·中考真题) Just one bite of cake with eggs is enough to make John feel very sick. Susan gets a terrible skin (皮肤) problem whenever she eats anything containing seafood, and David nearly died when he first ate a peanut cookie The body’s reaction (反应) to certain foods can be quite serious resulting in breathing problems or even the death. There are many things we eat that may cause our bodies to react badly if we have a food allergy (过敏). There are three common ways to test food allergies. Probably the simplest way is to give a child a food test. The doctor watches the child eat a little certain food to see if the child has an allergic reaction. This method takes quite a long time so it is used less often than the other two methods—skin tests and blood tests. In a skin test, a doctor puts allergens under the child’s skin and then waits to see if the child’s skin reacts. In a blood test, doctors take some of the child’s blood and add allergens to it and then check the blood. Dr. Jennifer from Stanford University spent 10 years studying the methods. She found a surprising fact. Skin tests or blood tests given to patients who visited their doctor for treatment of skin problems or stomachaches showed that these patients were allergic to certain foods. However, later tests showed that although they tested positive (阳性), fewer than 50 percent of them actually had food allergies. The problem might be food intolerance (不耐受) instead of a food allergy. Food allergies have something to do with a person’s immune system, while food intolerance has something to do with a person’s digestive system and the reaction is usually less serious. One of the most common kinds of food intolerance happens to people who have trouble taking in the sugar in food like milk, cheese and ice cream. Though allergy tests may show false positive results, they are still useful and can save lives. Some children’s food allergies may disappear as they grow older, so even though doctors don’t cure food allergies, sometimes the body itself does. 68.The underlined word “allergens” refers to (指的是) ________. A.something that hurts people’s skin B.something that protects people’s skin C.something that prevents an allergic reaction D.something that causes an allergic reaction 69.What can we learn from Dr. Jennifer’s study? A.Patients who tested positive may have food intolerance. B.Skin tests are much better than blood tests. C.Stomachaches are usually caused by food allergies. D.People with food intolerance should avoid food with sugar. 70.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage? A.Food allergy—Can we cure it? B.Food allergy—How to test it. C.Food allergy tests—Can we trust them? D.Food allergy tests—How to improve them. Passage 20(2024·江苏徐州·中考真题) After the haircut It’s getting hot. You go to have your hair cut. The barber Tony cuts off part of your hair and sweeps it away, but your hair’s journey is not over after the haircut. Have you ever thought of planting your old hair after it’s cut off? Some farmers do! What comes up? Not wigs (假发), but bigger and tastier crops. Hair is full of nitrogen (氮) that helps plants to grow. When cut hair is mixed into soil, the hair breaks down, slowly letting out nitrogen so it can help flowers and vegetables get big a little faster. If you’ve got a wool sweater on, you’re wearing a sheep’s haircut. Sheep grow fine curly (弯曲的) fur called wool. All those curls make air pockets that trap heat, keeping the sheep warm. Farmers shear the sheep in summer, so the sheep don’t feel too hot. And we use the hair to make warm clothes, socks, and hats. Wool can even take in rain without feeling wet. Wool also doesn’t catch fire easily. What does your hair say about you? Even many years after it has been cut, hair can tell surprising secrets. Because hair is made from bits of old cells, it has trace (微量) of chemicals (化学物质) that were in the body when the hair grew. When people are kept in the situation of dangerous chemicals, these traces remain in the hair, even long after they have disappeared from the body itself. Testing hair can help doctors know if there are dangerous chemicals in the food and water. Hair can tell another important secret—whose hair is it? This can be used to help solve crimes. Hair does so many things for us. It keeps us warm and cool, helps farmers, shows mysteries, and provides endless styling fun. One thing is for sure, it’s not just for wigs any more. 71.In which part of a magazine can we probably read this passage? A.History. B.Fashion. C.Science. D.Health. 72.How does hair help plants to grow? A.It provides nitrogen. B.It breaks down soil. C.It takes in rainwater. D.It lets out a smell. 73.What does the underlined part “shear the sheep” mean? A.Give enough food to the sheep. B.Wash the sheep many times. C.Find living place for the sheep. D.Cut the wool off the sheep. 74.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4? A.Hair helps keep warm. With their big round eyes, flat noses, thick fur coat and hairy ears, these cute animals have become a popular symbol of Australia. However, appearances can be tricky. The koala at the zoo was very fierce. Soon the burglars had deep scratches (抓痕) from the koala’s sharp claws (爪), so they decided to steal something easier. They stole a crocodile instead! Koalas are interesting animals. A koala mother carries her baby, called a joey, in a warm pouch, or pocket, on her stomach. Koalas eat only the oily leaves of eucalyptus trees (桉树). These leaves are harmful to many other animals, but koalas eat about two and a half pounds (just over one kilo) every night. There is enough water in these leaves, so koalas do not drink very much. In fact, in one local Australian language the word koala means “no drink”. 76.What did the burglars steal in the end? A.A koala. B.A crocodile. C.A joey. D.A tree. 77.What will “fierce” animals probably do? A.They show politeness. B.They always feel hungry. C.They sleep all day long. Each has a different function (功能). ●Head Feathers Head feathers come in all sizes. Tiny ones grow in overlapping (交叠的) rows to make a silky covering for a bird’s head. ●Primary Flight Feathers The outer wing feathers are long and strong. They are usually wider on one side. Their job is to push air as birds fly. ●Secondary Flight Feathers A row of smaller feathers grows on the bottom of the wing closer to the body. These also push air, so birds can fly. ●Tail Feathers Tail feathers help birds fly forward and stop during their flight. ●Down Feathers Down feathers grow under the other feathers. They are light and soft. Their job is to keep birds warm. ◆FlightFeathers push down on the air, so birds can fly. Feathers can move, so birds can change the shape of their wings. And feathers are light, so they don’t add too much weight. ◆Social Media Birds’ feathers tell the world who they are. Eye-catching feathers are good for attracting mates. ◆Protection Feathers of different colours and shapes act like camouflage (保护色), hiding birds from enemies. And often when an enemy tries to catch a bird, all it gets is a mouthful of tail feathers. ◆Keeping warm and cool Down feathers stop heat from getting in or out. This helps the bird stay just the right temperature. Feathers are so good at catching heat that penguins can stay warm even when standing on the ice sheet at 40 below zero. 80.Which part of a bird is introduced in the passage? A. B. C. How can we live on a green planet? One way is to use clean energy. Clean energy does not harm the Earth. It never runs out. Energy from the Sun is clean. We just need to learn how to get and store more of it. Plants use energy from the Sun. They use it to turn water and air into sugar. The sugar can be used as food. Scientists know a lot about how plants make food. Some scientists want to get energy from the Sun like plants do. They want to make a machine that can use sunlight to make fuel (燃料) from water. Water is made up of two different parts. Breaking water into its parts is hard. Plants do it all the time, though. It is part of how they make food. With energy from the Sun, the new machine will break water into its parts. One of the parts will be used as fuel. Then the fuel is used to make electricity (电). The electricity can power cars, houses, and so on. This fuel is better for the Earth than gasoline (汽油). It does not pollute the air. Plants can help us learn how to make clean energy! 87.How does the writer start this article? A.By telling stories. B.By asking questions. C.By comparing facts. Passage 25(2024·江苏常州·中考真题) ①China published the world’s first highly clear lunar geologic (地质的) atlas (地图集) on April 21. According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), it will provide up-to-date information for future lunar research and exploration. ②“These maps will help choose locations for future lunar research stations,” Ouyang Ziyuan, a well-known lunar scientist, said. “They can also help us better know about the Earth and other planets in the solar system, like Mars.” ③The world has seen great progress in the field of lunar science over the past half a century. However, the lunar geologic atlas that was developed during the Apollo Program remained unchanged. “As lunar geologic studies develop, those old maps can no longer satisfy future needs,” said Liu Jianzhong, a CAS researcher. ④Since 2012, Ouyang and Liu have led a team of scientists from several research centers in compiling (编制) this atlas. Their work was mainly built on information gained from China’s Chang’e Program. Information from other research projects and international tasks was also used. ⑤The new geologic atlas, which is published in both Chinese and English, presents a scale (比例尺) of 1: 2.5 million. Passage 27(2024·江苏无锡·中考真题) A theory of emotionTwo scientists called Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer developed the two-factor theory of emotion in 1962. They said that emotions are formed in two parts. First, the body has a physical response to a threat and then the mind considers the physical response as an emotion, which is then felt by the person. For example, imagine you are walking through a forest and you see a bear. Seeing it would probably start a physical response, such as your heart beating very fast and sweat breaking out. Your mind then decides that this is fear, which you feel as an emotion. A new study has suggested that the key to reducing feelings of anger is not venting (letting the angry emotions out) but doing calming activities such as yoga or meditation. The study was published in March by Sophie Kjaervik and Brad Bushman from Ohio State University in the US. They wanted to explore the popular theory that venting (expressing) anger is a good way of reducing it. Examples of venting anger include shouting or hitting something like a cushion, so that you let go of the emotion and therefore don’t feel it any more. The pair looked at 154 other studies on anger. These involved 10, 189 people, and included a variety of ages and backgrounds. In their study, Kjaervik and Bushman define anger as “an emotional response (反应) to a real or imagined threat (威胁)”. They used a theory of emotion (情绪假说) that says emotions are partly felt in your body and partly in your mind. The scientists looked at the other studies to see how different activities influenced anger. They found that activities such as running or boxing—which are often thought to be good for dealing with anger—weren’t very good at reducing it. In fact, some of these activities actually made it worse because they increased physical responses in the body that are linked to feeling angry. For example, they made people’s hearts beat faster. However, activities that decreased physical responses in the body did help to reduce feelings of anger. These included activities that slow the heart rate, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga. Bushman says activities that increase physical responses may be good for heart health but are “definitely not the best way to reduce anger”. The team found jogging was most likely to increase anger. However, some heart-rate increasing activities—like ball games and team sports—could reduce anger. 97.What is the main finding of the new study? A.A new method of venting anger. B.A new method of reducing anger. C.Good activities to vent anger. D.Good activities to reduce anger. 98.What can we learn about calming activities? A.They can reduce feelings of anger. B.They can increase the heart rate. C.They are good for mind health. D.They are good for heart health. 99.According to Schachter and Singer’s theory, what happens first if you see a snake and feel afraid? A.You get the feeling of fear. B.You get the feeling of calm. C.Your heart beats fast. D.Your heart beats slowly. 100.The following sentence can best be put at the end of ________. They think this shows that fun or playful activities help to reduce negative feelings. A.Paragraph 1 B.Paragraph 2 C.Paragraph 3 D.Paragraph 4 Passage 28(2024·江苏苏州·中考真题) China has become the world’s largest producer and market of EVs (电车). Really “outside.” Walking from the car into the mall doesn’t count. Now think about how much time you spent indoors—on the Internet or playing video games or watching TV. You may say, “I play inside more than outside and I like to play games on the computer.” If so, it’s likely that you spent more time inside four walls than outside in fresh air. Kids today spend two fewer hours per week on sports and outdoor activities than kids did 20 years ago. That’s according to a University of Michigan study. Non-moving activities are more popular. The costs “include overweight, greater stress, higher rates of physical and emotional illness and less joy…,” says Richard Louv, writer of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder. Play is important, even for adults. Outdoor activity betters your senses. The next time you sit down to message your friends, take note of your senses during and after your texting. Then do the same experiment after you’ve done something outside. You will find being outdoors brings the senses to life. “Hiking, exploring, and fishing help hone all of your senses,” says Betsy Keller. She’s a professor of exercise and sports sciences at Ithaca College in New York. “Smell, sight... all of your senses are in use when you’re outside.” Outdoor play frees your mind. Are you stressed out? Having trouble devoting your mind to what you’re doing? Too much time indoors — away from the natural world — may be a cause. Louv uses a term to describe the set of problems caused by too much time indoors: nature deficit disorder. He says, “I use it to describe the price we pay for being so separated from nature.” Spending time outdoors brings you closer to the environment. When you’re out, breathe in fresh air, hear the leaves crackle underfoot and search cool birds and plants in the woods. It can help you feel more connected to the natural world. No woods nearby? Nature can be found right outside your back door or in your local park. So the next time you sit down to spend quality time with a video game, consider treating yourself to a little outdoor play instead. 109.How does the writer first introduce the topic of outdoor play? A.By presenting the results of a recent study. B.By introducing different kinds of outdoor play. C.By inviting the reader to think about his or her own case. D.By telling the reader outdoor play is good for body and mind. 110.Which sentence should go in the empty box in Paragraph 5? A.Outdoor play helps form relationships. B.Just getting outdoors does wonders. C.Nature can remind us of life beyond our worries. D.The outdoors is the best place to practise physical skills. 111.Which word is closest to the meaning of “hone” in Paragraph 6? A.improve B.limit C.produce D.organize 112.Which of the following is a good way to enjoy outdoor play? A.Walking from your car into the mall. B.Spending your quality time with TV drama series. C.Playing a video game of making sandcastles by the beach. D.Watching in your local park how fast the clouds are moving. Why do some people like them but others don’t? A new study has found that other people’s likes and dislikes could be a reason. According to the research, people who eat vegetables and show a clear dislike for them can influence others. People may make facial expressions (面部表情) when eating. How does it affect a person watching them? A team of scientists in the UK did a study. They asked more than 200 young women to watch videos of other adults eating broccoli (西兰花). The people in the videos had different expressions while eating. They would smile, seem neutral (neither happy nor sad), or look disgusted. The study found that when people in the videos look disgusted while eating broccoli, people watching them began to like broccoli less. The opposite was not true, however. When someone had a smile while eating broccoli, people watching them did not like broccoli more. By watching others, humans learn which behaviors will be good for them. Scientists believe that people might avoid food that looks terrible. In this way, people can protect themselves from eating something bad or dangerous. The research focused only on adults, but the team believe that the results could also work for children. This means, if children see their parents not enjoying certain foods, including vegetables, they might not want to eat them either. How does the behavior of adults influence children’s choices of food? The team said they hope to understand more about it. This could help find ways to encourage children to eat more healthy foods. 120.What does the underlined word “disgusted” in paragraph 2 mean? A.Excited. B.Amazed. C.Unhappy. D.Untidy. 121.What’s the result of the study? A.People may prefer the food others like. B.Children dislike eating certain vegetables. C.Young women are easily affected by others. Passage 35(2023·江苏南京·中考真题) You can volunteer with three or four friends to do a team experiment (实验). First, you need to know a little about the water cycle. The water cycle starts when the sun heats ocean water. The sun converts, or changes, the water into water vapor (蒸气). The sun and wind cause the water vapor to rise into the air. Water vapor cools off in the atmosphere (大气层), or the air that surrounds Earth. Then it changes to drops of water. The drops then cluster, or hold together, forming a cloud. The water in the cloud falls as rain or snow. It may fall back into the ocean, or it may fall on land. If it falls on land, it finally works its way back to the ocean as a water overflow called runoff. As you begin your experiment, remember this amazing fact. The amount of water on Earth now is the same as it was in the past and will be in the future. About 71% of Earth’s surface is water. This includes not only the water in oceans, rivers, and lakes. It also includes the water in clouds, rain, snow, and groundwater and in the icy areas at the North and South Poles. Now make a model of the water cycle with a partner or small group. Use the instructions below: ●Fill cup about halfway with water. ●Add red food color to the water and stir. ●Use the marker to show water level. ●Put the cup in the bag and sea lit. ●Put the bag in a sunny window. After you finish making the water cycle model, watch carefully what happens to the water in the cup. Check the mark showing the water level. You should see that the water level becomes gradually lower. You should also begin to see small drops of water on the sides and bottom of the bag. The water is evaporating (蒸发) from the heat and then changing from the gas created by evaporating to water drops on the sides of the bag. The drops rundown the sides and will begin to collect at the bottom. This is what happens when the sun heats the ocean. Water vapor rises and forms clouds. The drops running down the sides of the bag are like rain filling on Earth. 128.In which part does “runoff” appear in the picture? A.A B.B C.C D.D 129.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Earth’s surface. B.The water on Earth. C.Your experiment. D.This amazing fact. 130.How does the writer introduce the way of making the water cycle model? A.By showing the steps in order. B.By explaining cause and effect. C.By comparing and contrasting. D.By providing the examples in detail. 131.What can we learn from the experiment? A.Successful experiments need a lot of time and hard work. B.Simple experiments can also help understand science well. C.Students do the experiment in order to show their team spirit. D.Students know the amount of water on Earth from the experiment. 132.From which is the passage most probably taken? A.A storybook. B.A book review. C.A science magazine. D.A tourist guide. Passage 36(2023·江苏盐城·中考真题) A team of Chinese scientists and climbers reached the top of Qomolangma at about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23. It’s the second time since last year for the science expedition (考察) team to reach the top. The team was made up of 13 Chinese scientists and climbers. They set off at a height of 8,300 metres for the top at about 3 a.m. After more than 8 hours of hard climbing, they arrived at the 8,830-metre weather station. After fixing steel ropes, changing batteries and putting in wind speed and direction sensors (传感器), they finished improving the world’s highest automated(自动化的) weather station, which was set up by Chinese scientists last year. Besides, they collected ice-snow samples on the top for further research. The weather station records temperatures, wind speeds and other key data for studying climate change. Climate scientists have found that global warming has had a large influence on the glacier number on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (青藏高原). Over the last fifty years, the temperature on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau has risen about 0.5℃ every ten years. Studying the ecosystem(生态系统) of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau will help scientists have a better understanding of the influence of climate change, and help scientists and the government make proper decisions. Since the mid-20th century, China has sent different research expedition teams to Qomolangma. But because of limited resources and technologies, many key scientific questions are still unanswered, such as whether global warming can melt the ice at the top of Qomolangma, and how ecosystem can change as height increases to extremity. 133.How many times has the Chinese science expedition team reached the top since last year? Passage 37(2023·江苏盐城·中考真题) Throughout history, people all over the world have loved watching shows. What types of shows can we see? Let’s take a tour of the colourful world of shows. Beijing opera is a type of musical theatre. It joins singing, dance, acrobatics, and martialarts together. It has a lot of music and is called opera, but the actors tell the stories in dialogues. The stories are taken from Chinese history, tales and literature. When an actor appears, the audience know quickly if the character is smart, stupid or bad because of his face paint. For example, a red face is loyal. A lot of make-up makes the audience see the actor’s mouth, eyes, and face from faraway. Wayang kulit is from Indonesia and is the oldest form of puppet theatre in the world. The stories are legends and folk stories. The puppets are all different characteristics. The biggest ones are the bad guys, and the heroes are usually thin puppets with long pointed noses, Wayang kulit performances are still very popular in Indonesia. Ballet is a form of dance. It started in Italy in the 15th century. In early ballet, dancers wore masks and heavy costumes, and they were all male. The first female dancer appeared about 200 years later. Both male and female ballet dancers have to be in very good shape and strong. One ballet performance can take 5,000 hours of practice. And in one performance a male dancer often has to lift a lot of female dancers. Two famous story ballets are Swan Lake and Peter Pan. Street theatre is really fun, and it is the oldest form of theatre. It was performed outdoors on the streets of ancient Egypt. Now you can see it in shopping centres and on street corners in many cities of the world. The performers do all kinds of things like juggling, dancing, and singing. Everyone can stop to watch it. And it’s free! 137.In Beijing opera, if an actor’s face paint is red, the character is . A.bad B.loyal C.smart D.stupid 138.What can be learnt from “One ballet performance can take 5, 000 hours of practice.”? A.Practice makes perfect. B.Well begun, half done. C.Many hands make light work. D.Actions speak louder than words. 139.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.We can enjoy singing, dance and juggling in Beijing opera. B.The stories in Wayang kulit are from history and literature. C.Swan Lake and Peter Pan are two famous story ballets. D.We can see street theatre indoors now in many cities. Passage 38(2023·江苏盐城·中考真题) 3-D films are not new. They first appeared in 1903. The inventors wanted viewers to feel like they were really inside the film they were watching! When you watch a 3-D film, you feel as if the people on the screen are close enough to touch and that the airplane flying at you is flying right off the screen. To watch 3-D films, you may need to wear special glasses. Usually, people buy or borrow the glasses in the cinema. But have you ever thought of making one pair by yourself? Here are tips for making your own 3-D glasses. ① Get some card boards. Cut out the shape of glasses. Make sure you can see through each hole when you hold it up to your eyes. ② Get some red and light blue acetate (醋酸透明塑胶片). ③ Glue the blue acetate on the right hole and the red on the left one. Next time when you go to watch a 3-D film, don’t forget to take your own handmade glasses! 140.3-D films were invented to ________. A.make the airplane fly right off the screen B.make viewers touch the people on the screen C.make the people on the screen closer to viewers D.make viewers feel like they were really inside the film 141.According to the passage, our own 3-D glasses are made up of __________. ①glass     ②cardboard     ③acetate     ④paper A.①② B.②③ C.①③ D.③④ 142.The passage probably comes from __________. A.a storybook B.a film poster C.a news report D.a science magazine Passage 39(2023·江苏常州·中考真题) Scientists who study happiness have evidence (证据) to show that being kind to others can result in happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can lift a person’s mood, for example. Everyday life is full of chances for such actions, yet people do not always make the most of them. In studies, behavioral scientist Nicholas Epley and I examined a possible explanation: people who do kind acts underestimate (低估) how much the ones receiving kindness value their behavior. In the experiments (实验), about 1, 000 people were asked to do some actions to make someone else feel good. We asked both the person performing (执行) the kind act and the one receiving it to answer some questions. The performers were asked to report their own experience and to guess how the receivers might feel. We wanted to understand how valuable people considered these acts to be, so both the performer and receiver had to rate (评分) how “big” the act seemed. In all cases, we compared the performer’s expectations of the receiver’s mood with the receiver’s actual (实际的) experience. For one, both performers and receivers experienced more positive (积极的) moods. For another, the receivers felt much better than the kind performers expected. The receivers also rated these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did. At first, we studied acts of the kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But we found that performers underestimated their positive influences on strangers as well. In one experiment, performers in a public park gave away hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day to people that just happened to be nearby. Again, the kind act brought more happiness than the performers expected. These findings suggest that what might seem small could matter a great deal to the person we do it for. Considering these warm actions can improve our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can? 143.What did the receivers do in the experiments? A.They showed kindness to others. B.They guessed the performers’ feelings. C.They rated how valuable the performers’ act of kindness was. D.They compared the performers’ expectations with their actual results. 144.What is paragraph 5 mainly about? A.Different purposes of the research. B.More evidence for the research results. C.Possible influences of the research findings. D.Another explanation of the research methods. 145.What is the writer’s attitude (态度) towards showing kindness to others? A.Supportive. B.Unclear. C.Doubtful. D.Uninterested. 146.What is the main idea of this article? A.Being kind can reduce one’s happiness as expected. B.Kindness can have unexpectedly positive influences. C.Choosing kindness is more difficult than expected. D.Showing kindness is more valuable than receiving it. Passage 40(2023·江苏常州·中考真题) Sending astronauts to Mars is a big challenge. Astronauts will have to take everything they need, including food, air and water. The room inside the spaceship is too limited to hold many things. So packing a spaceship is a huge challenge for a trip to Mars. Six astronauts on an eight-month trip to Mars will need at least 18,000 kilograms of water for drinking and washing. They’ll also need water to protect themselves from space rays which can pass right through spaceship walls and harm astronauts’ living cells. But a layer of water placed around the ship can stop the harm. That’s a lot of water. And sending water into space is too expensive. It costs $33,000 to send one cup of water to Mars. The more you take, the more it costs. We have the technology to get to Mars, but the problem is that it’s too expensive. But Flynn, an engineer at NASA, thinks he has a way of solving the problem. Instead of building a heavy spaceship and packing it full of stuff (物料), why not use the stuff as part of the spaceship? Imagine a spaceship that blows up like a balloon. Inside, the walls have pockets like a big honeycomb (蜂巢). These hold lots of plastic bags filled with water, dried food and algae (水藻). All these make hard walls and great radiation (辐射) protection. And stopping radiation doesn’t influence the food or water itself—it’s safe to eat and drink. And what if the same water could be reused again and again? Flynn and his team call their packed-pocket idea Water Walls. Making oxygen and taking away CO2—the waste gas you breathe out—is another problem in space. “Water Walls will take away CO2 the same way it’s done here on our Earth—with living plants,” Flynn says. Living plants take in CO2 to make their food, and give off oxygen. “Plants are hard to grow in a spacecraft, so we use algae,” he says. Algae are tiny plants that live in water. The algae will live in bags in the walls too, fed by human waste and sunlight, eating up CO2 and making oxygen for the astronauts to breathe. Flynn thinks his onboard recycling system has many advantages. He hopes it will help make flying to Mars a reality very soon. 147.What does the underlined phrase “packing a spaceship” in paragraph 1 most probably mean? A.repairing things in a spaceship B.recycling things in a spaceship C.checking things in a spaceship D.putting things into a spaceship 148.What is the advantage of Flynn’s system? A.Cost is saved. B.Travelling time is saved. C.Plastic bags are saved. D.Food is saved. 149.What is one purpose of Flynn’s idea of Water Walls? A.To prevent space rays during the space trip. B.To make the whole spaceship stronger. C.To control the temperature in the spaceship. D.To produce water in the spaceship. 150.Why are algae put in the plastic bags? A.To prevent water from being polluted. B.To serve as food for astronauts. C.To provide oxygen for astronauts. D.To help other plants grow in a spaceship. Passage 41(2023·江苏南通·中考真题) Climate change (气候变化) has brought a serious warning to the living areas of the Siberian crane, increasing the need to better protect the birds and their migratory channels (迁徙路径), an expert said. The Siberian crane breeds (繁殖) in northeast Siberia in Russia and flies to Poyang Lake for the winter in East China’s Jiangxi Province. About 95 percent of the birds spend the season in Poyang. Qian Fawen, a research professor from the National Bird Banding Center of China, said that Poyang’s water levels decide whether it is suitable for the birds to live there. However, climate change has made the levels change often. “In some years, the lake experiences floods; in others, it experiences droughts. Both of these situations create food shortages in the cranes’ living area,” he said. The Siberian crane is listed as seriously endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List. “We need to protect their living area, which is mainly wetland, so that we can protect them,” Qian said. In the recently announced National Action Plan for the Protection of Bird Migration Channels (2021-35), 1, 140 places in China were considered as important breeding grounds, wintering grounds and staying stops, including Poyang and the Yellow River wetland in Ningxia. The plan said that the government should watch and count the number of migratory birds and pay farmers for losses caused by the birds. A.Wetlands—Circle of Life B.Wetlands—Home of Living Things C.Wetlands—Friend of Earth D.Wetlands—Cleaner of Environment 【答案】4.A 5.A 6.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了湿地看似不美观,但分布广泛、类型多样,还具备防洪、净化水质、助力生物生存等重要作用,对维系生命循环具有重要意义。 4.细节理解题。根据第三段“When it rains heavily and water levels rise, they take in the extra water which may cause floods. A.d-c-b-a. B.c-d-b-a. C.d-c-a-b. 【答案】15.D 16.A 17.C 18.A 【导语】本文主要探讨了如何通过理性评估风险、克服恐惧心理,并采取“明智的风险”来促进个人成长和生活改善。 15.推理判断题。根据“The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts.”可知,我们的决策常常受情感影响。故选D。 16.词句猜测题。根据“Facing fear helps build your mental muscle, just like exercising builds physical muscle. So, taking smart risks helps you become mentally stronger.”可知,面对恐惧有助于锻炼你的“精神肌肉”,就像锻炼身体肌肉一样,因此明智地冒险可以帮助你在精神上变得更强大。此处的划线部分指“增强心理力量”。故选A。 17. A.No Need to Use Pacemakers B.The Problem with Piezoelectric Materials C.The Contribution of Chinese Scientists to Heart Operations D.Chinese Scientists Found a New Way to Improve Pacemakers 【答案】19.B 20.A 21.C 22.D 【导语】本文主要介绍中国科学家发现了一种改进心脏起搏器的新方法。 19.细节理解题。根据“Their main problem is that they use batteries. 【答案】38.D 39.C 40.B 41.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了一个名为MiCO的交互式地图系统,该系统用于追踪海洋物种的迁徙路线,并强调跨国合作对保护迁徙物种的重要性。 38.推理判断题。根据“Many marine species (海洋物种) depend on specific routes to migrate (迁徙). 【答案】42.D 43.B 44.D 45.D 【导语】本文介绍了科学家们在土星周围新发现的128颗卫星,使得土星的卫星总数达到274颗,成为拥有最多卫星的行星。这些新发现的卫星较小,且轨道独特。文章还解释了土星拥有众多卫星的原因,以及科学家对未来的卫星发现的看法。 42.细节理解题。根据“Scientists have discovered 128 new moons around Saturn”可知科学家们发现了土星周围128颗新的卫星。故选D。 43.词义猜测题。根据“At between 6.5 million and 18 million miles away from the ringed planet, the newly discovered moons are also further away than Saturn’s biggest moon, Titan.”可知这些新发现的卫星距离土星650万至1800万英里,也比土星最大的卫星泰坦更远,故此处“the ringed planet”指的是土星。故选B。 44.细节理解题。根据“the giant planet’s gravity attracted some rocks and ice. Therefore, some solutions are coming up cultural corners show traditional arts, and QR codes connect to more digital information. These help passengers to explore ICH at their own pace and continue learning after their journey ends. The success of ICH trains offers valuable lessons for cultural protection worldwide, proving that innovation (革新) and tradition can work together to keep cultural heritage alive for future generations. 46.What is the fresh experience for passengers on the K7041 train? A.Travelling farther north. B.Joining in live shows. C.Wearing traditional clothes. D.Having fun on the phone. 47.What do Gulayier and Professor Xiao both agree? A.ICH encourages more local visits. B.Trains help make ICH more popular. C.ICH improves the Chinese train journeys. D.Passengers welcome performers on ICH trains. 48.What does paragraph 5 mention about the ICH train journeys? A.Their features and influence. B.Their reasons and results. C.Their problems and methods. D.Their future and improvement. 49.What can be the best title for the passage? A.Trains push China’s cultural heritage further. B.China puts arms around local artists on ICH trains. C.More ICH trains begin running on railways in China. 【答案】53.C 54.B 55.B 56.A 【导语】本文主要介绍了公鸡是否能够通过镜子识别自己。科学家通过“标记测试”发现公鸡在镜子中看到自己时,并没有被欺骗,而是意识到镜中的影像是自己,而不是另一只公鸡,这表明公鸡具有一定的自我识别能力。 53.细节理解题。根据“Scientists use the ‘mark test’ to test whether an animal can recognize itself”可知“标记测试”是用来测试动物是否能够识别自己在镜子中的影像的。故选C。 54.词义猜测题。根据“But roosters only make the cries if other chickens can hear them. If they’re alone, they remain quiet so the hawk won’t see them.”可知公鸡只有在其他鸡能听到的情况下才会发出叫声,如果它们是独自一个,它们会保持安静,这样鹰就看不见它们了,故此处them指代“公鸡”。故选B。 55.推理判断题。根据“When there was no mirror, the roosters reacted as usual. It called out when it was near another rooster”可知当没有镜子时,公鸡在靠近另一只公鸡时会发出警报声,选项B符合。故选B。 56.推理判断题。根据“But roosters only make the cries if other chickens can hear them. If they’re alone, they remain quiet so the hawk won’t see them.”可知公鸡在独自面对危险时会选择保持安静,以免被猎鹰发现。故选A。 Passage 16(2024·江苏南京·中考真题) Exercise is important in our life. Here is what she reads. A.Culture. B.Fashion. C.Health. D.Literature, 61.From “Dance as a medicine” part, we can learn that ________. A.the act of dancing helps to improve “brain power” B.the act of traditional exercise requires more attention C.dance needs more high-level thinking to lift the mood D.dance needs more repetitive exercises than “brain power” 62.How do you understand the underlined part of this passage? 【答案】68.D 69.A 70.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了三种常见的方法可以检测食物过敏,虽然过敏测试可能会显示假阳性结果,但它们仍然有用,可以挽救生命。 68.词义猜测题。根据“In a skin test, a doctor puts allergens under the child's skin and then waits to see if the child’s skin reacts”可知在皮肤测试中,医生将过敏原放在孩子的皮肤下,然后等待孩子的皮肤是否有反应,故此处划线部分指代“引起过敏反应的东西”。故选D。 69.细节理解题。根据“although they tested positive (阳性), fewer than 50 percent of them actually had food allergies. The problem might be food intolerance (不耐受) instead of a food allergy.”可知检测呈阳性的患者可能存在食物不耐受。故选A。 70.最佳标题题。本文主要介绍了三种常见的方法可以检测食物过敏,虽然过敏测试可能会显示假阳性结果,但它们仍然有用,可以挽救生命,以选项C“食物过敏测试——我们能相信它们吗”为标题最合适。故选C。 Passage 20(2024·江苏徐州·中考真题) After the haircut It’s getting hot. 【答案】109.C 110.B 111.A 112.D 【导语】本文主要介绍了户外运动的好处。 109.细节理解题。根据“Think about how much time you spent outside last week”可知作者通过让读者思考自己在户外待了多长时间来引出话题。故选C。 110.推理判断题。根据“Play is important, even for adults”以及“Outdoor activity betters your senses.”并结合下文内容可知玩很重要,所以此处引出户外运动的好处,选项B“只是到户外就有神奇的效果”符合语境。故选B。 111.词义猜测题。根据“You will find being outdoors brings the senses to life. ‘Hiking, exploring, and fishing help hone all of your senses’”可知户外活动给生活带来了感官,徒步旅行、探险和钓鱼有助于磨练你的所有感官,故此处划线部分和improve意义相近。故选A。 112.推理判断题。根据“Nature can be found right outside your back door or in your local park.”可知大自然就在你的后门外或你当地的公园里,所以在你当地的公园里观察云朵移动的速度有多快,这是享受户外运动的好方式。故选D。 Passage 31(2024·江苏扬州·中考真题) Chinese culture has great attraction for people both at home and abroad.
