Passage 1
It’s 8:00 p.m. You are sitting in front of the television and feel like some chocolate ice cream. You can’t stop thinking about it. If you can’t find any in the fridge, you may even go to the shop to get some.
We all have those strong wishes for delicious food like ice cream, fast noodles, or fried chicken. Eating a little is not bad for your health, but eating too much can give you weight problems. So how do you stop yourself from eating more? Experts have some easy ways to get over your cravings.
Let them pass. Studies show that the cravings last only about 10 minutes, so try to wait for a short time to let the cravings pass before you walk into the kitchen or to the shop.
Eat less at a time. You need to care about how much you are eating. Try to eat only a little bit of food at one time. For example, put potato chips in a small bowl and just eat those in it .
Eat healthy food. Try to eat a similar food that is healthier than the one you want. A glass of milk is better than sweets. Or, low-fat yogurt (酸奶) is healthier than ice cream.
Eat all kinds of food. Every food is good for your health if you eat in a right way.

Passage 3
Eating healthy and balanced meals is one of the keys to good health. But there’s another important key which is often forgotten by us. That is having those meals at the right time.
Understanding the science behind meal timing can have a huge influence on your health. More research is showing that correct mealtime might help people lose weight and reduce risks of disease. According to the experts, “It’ s about the when, rather than the what.” Incorrect mealtimes can be against all the advantages of your healthy diet.
In addition, each of us needs a given amount of energy each day. This energy is produced from the grains, proteins, and fats that we take in. When we fail to eat adequately through the day (for example, only one or two meals), it can be challenging to meet our energy needs.
There are different ways to have a meal plan that makes you feel your best. The list below may be a good place to start.
●6:00-9:45 a. m. Break your fast. This window is the perfect time to have breakfast. Think of a breakfast that includes healthy fat and protein like eggs, cheese, or plant seeds and so on.
●10:00-11:00 a. m. Snack it up. Given breakfast has now been a few hours ago and lunch still feels light years away. Having something light but tasty is wonderful. Pick an apple or some pine nuts (坚果). The high-fiber and high-protein snack is helpful to stop you from feeling hungry.
●1:00 p. m. Lunch Break. Work and study tasks can make you have lunch later or even forget it. But waiting until later in the afternoon or evening could lead to eating too much and making less healthy choices. Research supports eating an earlier lunch.
●3:00 - 4:00 p. m. Snack again. As with your morning snack, a high-fiber and high-protein snack is a good choice.
●6:30 p. m. Dinnertime. Research supports having dinner at 6-7 p. m. Eating an earlier dinner and getting away from late night (10 p. m. and after) meal can help you sleep better. A dinner that is high in fiber and low in fat can help you fall asleep faster and increase your time in dreamland.

Three students write about a project they have done.
Kemal
For my project, I had to find out about our teeth, mouth and stomach. I had to find pictures of them and explain what happens to food, from the moment we put it in our mouths to when it goes into our stomachs. Then I gave a talk about it all to my class. Writing the project was interesting and I learned a lot about the body, but I didn’t like giving the talk. I felt really worried before I did that.

I did a project about why and how we get some health problems, such as colds, having a temperature, toothache and pain. With all the information I found, I had to make a web page for teenagers to use. I enjoyed doing the project, especially the talk to my class at the end. After the talk, I gave them a quiz (测试) and they answered everything really well. Perhaps I should be a teacher in the future!

Passage 6
The youth across the U.S. are struggling with mental health. Now a new study has found that teaching bike-riding skills to middle school students during physical education classes might help improve their mental health.
The study was made because of the fact that students are starting to experience all kinds of pressure from school and home. Generally, the key period of encouraging children to enjoy the benefits of bike riding is in the middle school. So, Sean Wilson and his team decided to test whether taking part in a cycling instruction program could result in measurable changes in health and happiness for young people.
They invited more than 1, 200 students from middle schools across the country and they were offered a program called Riding for Focus, provided by the nonprofit organization Outride. The invited students were asked to take part in cycling classes for at least three days a week for 6-8 weeks. They learned about cycling safety and skills while having fun and increasing their heart rate through outdoor activities. The researchers gave questionnaires (问卷) to the invited students at the beginning and end of the program to measure their well-being.
“From the results of the surveys, we know that physical activities like cycling can benefit not only the body but also the mind and social relationships,” says Esther Walker.
The study is encouraging, but it’s not a cure-all. “It’s important to realize that other factors (因素) also play a role in healthy living. For example, students who didn’t limit their screen time to at most two hours a day or who got less than eight and a half hours of sleep saw less improvement in their well-being,” says Sean Wilson.

Passage 4
“We have Dante, Shakespeare and Du Fu (712-770). These poets create the very values by which poetry is judged,” said Harvard professor Stephen Owen in Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, a BBC documentary (纪录片).
Despite the fact that Du Fu is usually mentioned in the same breath as Dante and Shakespeare, he has remained largely unknown in the Western world for long. However, with the screening of the first English-language documentary featuring the poet, the days of Du Fu as China’s best-kept literary secret seem to be numbered.
It is written and presented by Michael Wood, a skilled television historian who also directed other China-related documentaries such as The Story of China and The Story of China’s Reform and Opening-Up (2018).
From the Yellow River to the Yangtze Gorges, and down to the forested hills of Hunan province, Wood visited a number of places such as the poet’s birthplace Gongyi in Henan province and the Tang Dynasty capital Chang’an, today’s Xi’an. Along the way, he met and talked to ordinary people, dancers and musicians, who helped to tell the fantastic story of the poet. Interviews with famous scholars specializing in Chinese literature also helped present a clearer picture of the poet’s life experiences, literary significance and his friendship with Li Bai, another great Chinese poet.
Born in 712, Du Fu lived in the Tang Dynasty, a time marked by extraordinary cultural achievements. However, after a wave of civil unrest (国内骚乱), Du Fu, the former civil servant at the Tang court, was forced to become a porter, and suffered from starvation. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing, pouring out his concern for his country and people as well as celebrating the simple joys of life.

If you asked any of the new monkeys why the beatings took place, the answer would probably be: “I don’t know. I guess that’s how things are going here.”
If you keep doing things in the old way, you will never change the world. So try to be different!

“Thank you so much, Pinocchio,” the fairy said. “You are so kind. To thank you, I will give you a special gift. But you must promise to use it only for good.” Then, she gave Pinocchio a magic pencil. “This pencil can make anything you draw become real,” she explained.
Pinocchio was very happy. He thanked the fairy and continued his journey home. As soon as he got home, he decided to draw a beautiful garden with lots of colorful flowers and a big tree. He started drawing with the magic pencil, and as he finished his drawing, the garden came to life right in front of his eyes!

Eat healthy food. Try to eat a similar food that is healthier than the one you want. A glass of milk is better than sweets. Or, low-fat yogurt (酸奶) is healthier than ice cream.

C.What to eat is more important than it. D.It’s against the advantages of healthy diet.

Dan
I did a project about why and how we get some health problems, such as colds, having a temperature, toothache and pain. With all the information I found, I had to make a web page for teenagers to use. I enjoyed doing the project, especially the talk to my class at the end. After the talk, I gave them a quiz (测试) and they answered everything really well. Perhaps I should be a teacher in the future!
Jerzy
My project was about what you should do when people get ill suddenly or hurt themselves, so it was really useful. For example, I now know how to help a friend who has cut himself badly, or a family member who has broken an arm or a leg. I had to write a ten-page document (文件) for teenagers. I found most of the information I needed online. One thing the project taught me is that I certainly don’t want to be a doctor or a nurse when I’m older!

1.Why did the researchers do the study?
A.To give students cycling safety tips. B.To measure students’ health condition.
C.To develop students’ interest in cycling. D.To test riding’s effects on kids’ mental health.

A.They hoped to improve their cycling skills.
B.They took cycling classes as many as possible.
C.They took part in both outdoor and indoor activities.
D.They completed questionnaires before and after the program.
5.What does Wilson think of the study?
A.It should include more young students. B.It needs to be improved in a new situation.
C.It is helpful but can not solve any problem. D.It was a failure but worth being studied more.

“Du’s poetry reflects the country’s historical events mirrored in his own spiritual journey, so he becomes a part of the emotional vocabulary of Chinese culture,” said Stephen Owen, who in 2016 finished the eight-year-long project to translate Du Fu’s 1,400 poems into English.

Passage 1
It seems that the world is always trying to make you be like everyone else, so one of the greatest tasks in your life is to be yourself.
For research purposes, some scientists placed five monkeys in a room, with a ladder (梯子) in the middle and bananas on the top. Every time a monkey went up the ladder, the scientists splashed (泼) the other monkeys with cold water. After a while, whenever a monkey tried to climb the ladder, the other monkeys would beat him up. As time went by, no monkey would go up the ladder.
Scientists then replaced (代替) one of the monkeys with a new monkey. As expected, the new monkey tried to go up the ladder to get the bananas and the other monkeys beat him up. After several times, this new member learnt not to climb the ladder, though he never knew the real reason.
Then, scientists replaced another old member with a second new monkey, and the same thing happened again. The first new monkey also joined in beating the second new monkey. If you asked any of the new monkeys why the beatings took place, the answer would probably be: “I don’t know. I guess that’s how things are going here.”
If you keep doing things in the old way, you will never change the world. So try to be different!

When he pushed the bushes aside, he saw a little fairy trapped in a spider’s web. The fairy was crying for help. “Please, Pinocchio,” she said, “save me from this web.”
Pinocchio felt sorry for the fairy. He knew he had to help her, but the web was very sticky. He tried to pull the web apart with his hands, but his fingers got stuck. Then he thought of an idea. He found a big leaf and used it to carefully break the threads of the web. Finally, the fairy was free.
Just then, his friend, a lazy boy named Lampwick, came to visit him. When Lampwick saw the magic pencil, he got a bad idea. “Pinocchio, let’s use the pencil to draw bags of gold coins. We can be rich and never have to work or study again!” he said.

Harry picked it up in surprise. No one had ever written to him before. Who would? He had no friends or other relatives. But here it was, a letter for him, with just a simple address:
“Hurry up! What are you doing, checking for letter bombs (炸弹)?” Uncle Vernon laughed at his own joke.
Harry went back into the kitchen, still holding the letter. He handed Uncle Vernon the bill and the postcard. Uncle Vernon quickly opened the bill and then read the postcard.
“Marge’s ill,” he said, looking at the postcard. “Ate something strange.”
Just as Harry wanted to open the letter, Dudley suddenly shouted,
“Dad! Harry’s got something! ”
Uncle Vernon grabbed (抓) it from him.
“That’s mine! ” Harry said, trying to grab it back.
“Who’d be writing to you?” said Uncle Vernon, opening the letter and looking at it. His face went from red to green, then to white, like old porridge.
“Petunia!” Uncle Vernon shouted.
Dudley tried to grab the letter, but Uncle Vernon held it high. Aunt Petunia turned around and took the letter and read the first line. She looked like she might fall down.
“Vernon! Oh my god -Vernon!” she said.
They stared at each other, not noticing that Harry and Dudley were still in the room. Dudley wasn’t used to being ignored (忽略).
