My son plays for the local basketball club team. Every Wednesday, he and his teammates run, do drills, and practice playing defense. His team is a mixed bag of talent. Some kids can dribble (运球), shoot, and pass better than others. Some are more competitive and want to shoot every shot. For this age group, referees call traveling and double dribble, which upsets some kids who are still learning. They get moody and give up on plays when teammates don’t pass them the ball.
This season, all was fun and games until my expectations took over. I wanted my son to be an all-star player. In my head, I had visions of him scoring like Jordan, playing defense like Scottie Pippen. My son doesn’t even know who most of these players are, but there I was thinking that he could play like them when he was still learning the game.
During one game, I yelled out (吼出) commands for him to follow. It got so bad on one play that he looked at me after making a mistake, shot his hands in the air confused about what I wanted him to do, and looked like he wanted to cry. I was embarrassed in myself partly — for behaving that way, but more so for injuring my son in his pursuit of fun and games. I felt like I needed a timeout and told my son that I wouldn’t attend his next couple of games. He was OK with that, and after each of the next two games that I missed, he returned home smiling with tales about his team’s victory. That timeout was worth it. Two games in, I watched my son score his first basket in a game. His team won the game. I was excited.
I learned that I could take a lesson from him on how to forgive someone, and how to show up in a way that helps, rather than hurts. In the game of parenting, our kids can sometimes call foul Thankfully, I was able to rebound.
4. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. The players vary in basketball skills. B. The coach focuses on winning games.
C. The team is short of good players. D. Kids struggle with fairness in competition.
5. What does the author intend to convey by mentioning Jordan and Pippen?
A. His son’s potential talent. B. His unrealistic expectations.
C. His admiration for legends. D. His son’s lack of knowledge.
6. Why did the author decide to have a timeout?
A. He lost interest in his son’s failures.
B. He prepared better coaching strategies.
C. He hurt his son’s passion for basketball.
D. He needed to reflect on his son’s performance.
7. What does the underlined word “rebound” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Make a big mistake. B. Recover from failure.
C. Win a competitive game. D. Follow others’ advice.
C
Your fingerprint and the pattern of lines in your eyes are known to be more or less unique to each person, including you, or at least specific enough to be useful for unlocking your phone.
Most people rarely think about breathing, but for researchers like Noam Sobel and his colleagues, regular cycle of in and out contains information about the brain. Every time you breathe, sensory neurons (神经元) and other cells that help monitor the environment get activated, and Dr. Sobel and Timna Soroka, a graduate student, wondered whether it would be possible to identify individuals from long-term recordings of their breathing patterns. “We assumed, brains are unique, and therefore breathing patterns would also be unique,” Dr. Sobel said.
The study was conducted in 100 people who wore sensors for 24 hours. There’s more to a cycle of breath than just breathing in and breathing out. One person might have a very consistent pause (停顿) just before each breath. Another might pause some of the time and barely at other times. Someone might tend to breathe out very quickly, or sigh more frequently than another. For many people, one nostril (鼻孔) might have a greater flow than the other for some of the day.
Neuroscientist Jack Feldman said that before the research was done, he would have considered the idea of a fingerprint-like breathing pattern highly unlikely. But he said the team’s study “provides very convincing data that we have very distinctive breathing patterns. That makes sense, because breathing is closely tied to many processes in the body, each of which might well be unique to individuals.”
Dr. Sobel and Ms. Soroka found that it was possible to link subjects’ body mass index (指数) with features of their breath and that there were potential connections between breathing patterns and subjects’ scores on questionnaires for assessing features related to anxiety, depression or autism. They also wonder whether it might be possible to identify on a more refined level exactly what a healthier pattern of breath looks like, both as a way to identify illness and to explore whether people can be taught ways of breathing that might change their biology.
8. Why did Dr. Sobel and Ms. Soroka research breath?
A. To develop new phone unlocking methods. B. To study the brain’s monitoring system.
C. To identify individuals from breathing patterns. D. To understand the sensory neurons’ function.
9. What did Dr. Sobel and Ms. Soroka find in the study?
A. People sigh as frequently as each other. B. Breathing cycles are tied to emotions.
C. Nostril airflow differs in most people. D. Each person has a unique breath print.
10. What is Jack Feldman’s initial attitude to the study?
A. Dismissive. B. Skeptical. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
11. What is the likely application of this research according to the last paragraph?
A. The environmental studies. B. The sensor development.
C. The clinical research. D. The athletic performance training.
D
Scientists have developed a low-cost, durable, highly-sensitive robotic “skin” that can be added to robotic hands like a glove, enabling robots to sense information about their surroundings in a way that’s similar to humans.
Unlike most robotic touch systems, which use separate sensors for different types of touch, this electronic skin acts as one big sensor, making it more like human skin. Although not as sensitive as real skin, the robotic skin can sense signals from over 860,000 tiny pathways, allowing it to recognize different types of touches, pressure, temperature, and even damage — all in one material.
Electronic skins work by changing physical information — like pressure or temperature — into electronic signals. In most cases, different types of sensors are needed for different types of touch — one type of sensor to find pressure, another for temperature, and so on — which are then fixed into soft, flexible materials. However, the signals from these different sensors can impact each other, and the materials are easily damaged.
“Having different sensors for different types of touch leads to materials that are complex to make,” said lead author Dr David Hardman. “We wanted to develop a solution that can notice multiple types of touch at once, but in a single material.” Their solution uses one type of sensor that reacts differently to different types of touch. While it’s challenging to separate out the cause of each signal, these materials are easier to make and stronger.
Researchers melted a soft, flexible, and conductive gelatine-based hydrogel (导电的明胶基水凝胶) and shaped it into a human hand. By testing different electrode (电极) setups, they found that just 32 electrodes at the wrist could collect over 1.7 million data points about touch across the whole hand. They tested the artificial skin by heating it, pressing it with fingers and a robot arm, and even cutting it. The team used this data to train a machine learning model so the hand could recognize different types of touch.
In future, the researchers are hoping to improve the durability of the electronic skin, and to carry out further tests on real-world robotic tasks.
12. What is the feature of the new robotic skin?
A. Being sensitive as human skin.
B. Having 860,000 human-like pathways.
C. Using single sensor for multiple touches.
D. Possessing self-recovering capability after damage.
13. Why did researchers develop the new robotic skin?
A. To replace human skin functions. B. To simplify sensor production.
C. To create self-aware robots. D. To reduce the cost of skin materials.
14. What does the fifth paragraph mainly tell us about the new artificial skin?
A. The working principle. B. The experimental process.
C. The analysis of data. D. The potential applications.
15. What might be the best title for the text?
A. New Skin Gives Robots Human Touch
B. Robots Are Covered with Flexible Skins
C. Special Sensors Add New Functions to Robots
D. Scientists Invent New Materials for Sensors

Extreme heat is the No. 1 weather-related killer in the United States and experts say its risks are often underestimated. ____16____ It is your body’s way of telling you to get out of the heat immediately, or you may develop heat stroke (中暑), a life-threatening condition that requires emergency treatment. Here’s how to plan for outings in hot weather.
Before starting your outdoor work shift or going to that barbecue, take a moment to check the heat index. It includes humidity (湿度) as well as the air temperature, giving you a more accurate read on how hot it will feel outside. ____17____ Check the wind flow as well. Think about the time of day you plan to be outdoors. Three to five p.m. is one of the most dangerous times of day.
On hot days, bring water with you wherever you go. Drinking water can help your body produce more sweat. If you’re feeling hot and need a quick way to cool down, you can also put yourself in a body of water. If that’s not possible, put your feet and arms in cold water. ____18____ Whether you’re headed to the pool or going for a walk, wear lightweight, breathable clothing. Choose cotton or linen fabrics with breathable materials that help sweat evaporate (蒸发) faster. ____19____ If your clothes are too tight, the sweat on your skin can’t evaporate, preventing your body from cooling down effectively.
____20____ Dark surfaces tend to absorb more heat than natural green spaces. Because shaded areas have less solar exposure, they can feel much cooler. If you’re a dog walker and it’s a hot day, walk those pets down a tree-lined park instead of the sidewalk. Or if you’re headed to the pool, bring a sun umbrella or a tent to provide some coverage.
A. It can cause heat-related illness.
B. You should avoid outdoor activities.
C. Choose shady and natural environments.
D. It can lower your core body temperature.

“Class, quiet please!” Ms. Tan, our teacher, called out with her arms crossed, annoyed by the noise we were making. Once the class quieted down, she continued, “Today we have a new student joining us. His name is Luke Orye! As you know, today is the first day of this school year. He is a transfer (转学) student from Sunnyfield Primary School. I hope you will help him feel comfortable in school.” All of our faces lit up. None of us had had a transfer student before! I gave Luke a friendly smile and waved from my seat. He saw it and gave a tight smile back. He lowered his head to keep his eyes fixed on the ground. I also noticed that he was nervous.
Just then, I realized something. “Oh no, Mike is going to bother Luke. A shy guy like Luke might not handle it well,” I thought. Mike was known for being mischievous (调皮). He would behave properly when teachers were watching, but act up as soon as they weren’t looking. Every student found his behavior annoying because he loved to play tricks on others.
When the bell rang for a break, I raced over to talk to Luke about Mike. However, Luke was out of the door before I could open my mouth. “He probably wants some fresh air,” I thought as I sighed and slowly walked towards the courtyard.
On my way, I saw Mike approaching Luke with a mischievous grin (咧嘴笑). “Why so quiet? Cat got your tongue?” Mike joked, pushing Luke playfully. Luke looked uncomfortable and shifted his weight nervously. Mike laughed heartily and clapped Luke on the back, thinking he was just having some fun.
As luck would have it, Ms. Tan walked by! She was the teacher on duty in the courtyard that day. Mike quickly composed himself and put on his best behavior. Luke and I exchanged worried glances. I wanted to tell Ms. Tan what happened but hesitated. “Should I get involved? This could blow up in my face,” I thought. But then I remembered how Luke looked — like he needed someone to stick up for him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Taking a deep breath, I walked over to Ms. Tan.

A 5. B 6. C 7. B

根据第二段“I wanted my son to be an all-star player. In my head, I had visions of him scoring like Jordan, playing defense like Scottie Pippen. My son doesn’t even know who most of these players are, but there I was thinking that he could play like them when he was still learning the game.
根据第三段“I was embarrassed in myself partly — for behaving that way, but more so for injuring my son in his pursuit of fun and games. I felt like I needed a timeout and told my son that I wouldn’t attend his next couple of games. (我为自己的行为感到尴尬,但更尴尬的是,我的儿子在追求乐趣和游戏时受到了伤害。我觉得我需要暂停一下,并告诉我儿子我不会参加他接下来的几场比赛。)”可知,作者为自己的行为感到尴尬,更重要的是伤害了儿子对篮球的乐趣,所以决定暂停观看儿子的比赛。C选项“他伤害了儿子对篮球的热情”符合文意,故选C。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“In the game of parenting, our kids can sometimes call foul (抗议不公平). Thankfully, I was able to rebound. (在养育孩子的游戏中,我们的孩子有时抗议不公平。谢天谢地,我能 。)”可知,在为人父母这场“比赛”中,孩子有时会抗议不公平,而作者庆幸自己能够“rebound”。结合前文作者意识到自己的错误并暂停观看儿子比赛,之后儿子表现良好,作者也感到兴奋,可推测“rebound”意思是从之前的错误或失败中恢复过来。故选B。

根据上文“Extreme heat is the No. 1 weather-related killer in the United States and experts say its risks are often underestimated.(在美国,极端高温是导致死亡的首要天气因素,而专家们表示,其潜在风险往往被低估了)”以及后文“It is your body’s way of telling you to get out of the heat immediately, or you may develop heat stroke (中暑), a life-threatening condition that requires emergency treatment.(这是你的身体在提醒你尽快离开高温环境,否则你可能会患上中暑这种危及生命的疾病,需要立即接受紧急治疗)”可知,前文提极端高温风险常被低估,后文强调“这是身体提醒你立即远离高温,否则可能中暑”,故本句承接前文风险,引出后文“中暑”这一具体疾病,故A选项“它可能会导致热相关疾病”符合语境,故选A。
根据上文“Before starting your outdoor work shift or going to that barbecue, take a moment to check the heat index. It includes humidity (湿度) as well as the air temperature, giving you a more accurate read on how hot it will feel outside.(在开始户外工作时段或准备去参加烧烤活动之前,请先花点时间查看一下热指数。这个指数不仅包含湿度,还包括空气温度,能更准确地反映出户外的温度感受)”以及后文“Check the wind flow as well. Think about the time of day you plan to be outdoors. Three to five p.m. is one of the most dangerous times of day.(还要检查一下风向和风速。考虑一下你计划外出的时间。下午三点到五点是一天中最为危险的时段之一)”可知,前文建议查看“热指数”,后文补充“也要关注风向和风速”,G 项中的“also”与后文“as well”呼应,形成“查看热指数→留意云量→关注风向”的并列建议,故G选项“你还应该留意云层覆盖情况”符合语境,故选G。
【18题详解】
根据上文“On hot days, bring water with you wherever you go. Drinking water can help your body produce more sweat. If you’re feeling hot and need a quick way to cool down, you can also put yourself in a body of water. If that’s not possible, put your feet and arms in cold water.(在炎热的天气里,无论走到哪里都要随身携带水。喝水能促使身体分泌更多汗液。如果你感觉很热并且需要一种快速降温的方法,还可以让自己泡在水中。如果做不到这一点,也可以将双脚和手臂浸泡在冷水中)”可知,前文提到“将手脚浸入冷水”的降温方法,D 项“它可以降低你的核心体温”解释该方法的作用,承接“快速降温”的需求,且“it”指代“把手脚浸入冷水”的动作,逻辑合理。故选D。
【19题详解】
根据后文“If your clothes are too tight, the sweat on your skin can’t evaporate, preventing your body from cooling down effectively.(如果你的衣服太紧,皮肤上的汗水就无法蒸发,从而无法使你的身体有效地降温)”可知,后文明确“衣服太紧会导致汗液无法蒸发,影响降温”,E选项与后文“衣服太紧”形成对比,直接给出穿搭建议,故E选项“你最好选择宽松的衣服”符合语境,故选E。
根据后文“Dark surfaces tend to absorb more heat than natural green spaces. Because shaded areas have less solar exposure, they can feel much cooler. If you’re a dog walker and it’s a hot day, walk those pets down a tree-lined park instead of the sidewalk. Or if you’re headed to the pool, bring a sun umbrella or a tent to provide some coverage.(深色表面比自然的绿色区域更容易吸收热量。

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Taking a deep breath, I walked over to Ms. Tan.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Taking a deep breath, I walked over to Ms. Tan. My heart pounded with a mix of fear and determination. “Ms. Tan.” I began, my voice trembling slightly, “I think Mike is bothering Luke. He was joking around, but Luke looked really uncomfortable.” Ms. Tan’s eyes narrowed as she scanned the courtyard, quickly spotting Mike and Luke standing together. Without hesitation, she marched over, her stern voice cutting through the air. “Mike, come with me. We need to talk.” As Mike followed Ms. Tan, I watched relief wash over Luke’s face. I approached him and whispered, “Don’t worry, he won’t bother you again.”
A few minutes later, Mike returned, his face red with shame. After Ms. Tan’s serious talk with him, he finally realized his mistakes. To everyone’s surprise, Mike sincerely apologized to Luke, his voice trembling with regret. Luke, with a nod and an extended hand, accepted the apology. From that day on, the three of us became inseparable. We spent lunch breaks sharing stories of our old schools, and worked together to help Luke adjust to his new environment. That experience taught us all a valuable lesson: standing up for others and allowing room for growth can turn conflict into lasting friendship.
