With the back-to-school season nearing, my thoughts return to my educational journey at Greenville Senior High Academy (GSHA).
In 2008, I was called “gifted (有天赋的)” after a few rounds of tests and received an acceptance letter from GSHA. This new situation gave me the heebie-jeebies — leaving behind familiar faces to go into a world where strangers came from every corner of the Greenville area was a lot to deal with. As I stepped into the new hallways, I had no idea of the great impact (影响) this change would have on my life.
My time at GSHA marked an important period that remains a highlight of my young life. Dance became an unexpected great love for me. Ballet and modern dance classes every other day helped me create some of the best memories I have of that time. Our dance teacher Ms. Smith reminded us of Debbie Allen and when I was in the dancing room I felt like we were dancing stars. Our dance performances were unforgettable — from the stage (舞台), it was fun to see the hall completely filled.
Beyond (除……之外) artistic parts, what hangs around most in my memory are the relationships that were created. I had classmates from different backgrounds, each one of them increasing my knowledge in ways that books could not. Looking back, it’s clear that education is not only about textbooks. It includes the people who guide us, the friendships that shape us, and the experiences that form us into different individuals (个人).
4. What do the underlined words “gave me the heebie-jeebies” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Worked quite well on me. B. Made me very nervous.
C. Became so clear to me. D. Left me really proud.
5. What do we know about the author at GSHA?
A. She was crazy about dancing. B. She was thankful to Ms. Smith.
C. She was a fan of Debbie Allen. D. She was a gifted ballet performer.
6. What did the author realize after her experience?
A. Time is money. B. Hard work pays off.
C. Education goes far beyond books. D. Different backgrounds shape deep friendships.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To share her learning methods. B. To talk about the history of GSHA.
C. To remember her high school teachers. D. To think back to her high school journey.

A school has created its very own bakery (面包店) to sell cakes and bread directly to a coffee shop to help develop children’s real-life business skills.
Castle Newnham Bakery was started by GCSE hospitality and catering (酒店与餐饮业) pupils at the Bedford school which now sells its goods (商品) to Mooch Coffee in the town
The partnership came about when Martin Jenkins, a partner at the shop attended his son’s sports day at Castle Newnham School. He bought some sweet treats made by the catering pupils and was so impressed with the taste that he asked for an order.
Now, every Thursday, the pupils make different kinds of cakes after school. They work in the school kitchen. The finished food is collected on Friday morning and taken to the store.
Precious, 15, said: “I love visiting the coffee shop at the weekend and seeing our cakes being sold to the local community.”
Asi, 15, said: “I would love to own a bakery, when I am older, so this is the perfect experience.”
Mat Dunkley another partner at the shop, said: “It’s just wonderful, we don’t treat them any differently because they’re children, we treat them like any other supplier (供应商). I’m proud of the partnership. We’re paying for a service and it gives pupils the chance to learn hands-on experience in hospitality, completing the full catering cycle by also supporting the community. We are also planning to do more including working with the school to host music evenings to further add to the pupils’ learning journey.”
8. What inspired Jenkins to work with the school bakery?
A. The school’s invitation. B. The suggestion from his son.
C. The school’s standing for good catering. D. The treats he bought at the school’s sports day.
9 What can we learn from Precious and Asi’s words?
A. They value this chance. B. They find it difficult to bake cakes.
C. They are thankful for the local community. D. They are satisfied with their baked goods.
10. What does Dunkley think of the partnership with the school?
A. It is difficult to carry out. B. It helps his shop sell more goods.
C. It has more disadvantages than advantages. D. It is good for both pupils and the community.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Bakery colors pupils’ school life.
B. Forming a partnership is a piece of cake.
C. School starts bakery to sell goods to coffee shop.
D. Making the bakery dream come true has a long way to go.

A new study carried out among teenagers in a high school theater program showed how teens learned about how to use positive emotions (情绪) to drive their work. Students also used strategies to manage their own and others’ bad emotions. The research was carried out through interviews with the students during a three-month theater program. This study showed how schools and programs can support the development of “emotional intelligence” in teenagers.
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign started open-ended interviews to get an in-depth understanding of one setting — a high school theater program. Ten teenagers were interviewed every two weeks over a three-month period while the theater group prepared a musical. Two adults who guided the production were also interviewed every two weeks. What’s more, the researchers observed the rehearsals (观察排练) weekly.
During the rehearsals, teenagers reported emotional experiences, including sadness, anger, anxiety, and excitement. The program provided culture that helped them learn to deal well with the events and feelings connected to these different emotions, the researchers found. The adults led by example, helping the teens develop strategies to manage strong emotions.
“The development of ‘emotional intelligence’ is important to adult work and family life, but many young people arrive in adulthood with incomplete emotional skills,” according to Reed W. Larson, the study’s lead author. “Our research findings suggest how, under the right conditions, teenagers learn these skills. Although further research is needed, youth programs, such as the theater program, along with schools that provide these conditions may lead to better emotional learning.”
12. What did the new study find?
A. Theater programs are popular among high schoolers.
B. Doing theater helps teenagers with emotional growth.
C. Emotional skills are important to student success.
D. High school teaching is a performing art
13. How did the researchers get information for the study?
A. By holding interviews. B. By preparing a musical.
C. By teaching at the local school. D. By reviewing students’ performances.
14. What can we say about the adults in the theater program?
A. They experienced the same emotions as the teens. B. They were close observers of the program.
C. They provided models for the students. D. They were in control of the new study.
15. What is Reed W. Larson’s attitude towards the theater program?
A. Doubtful. B. Curious. C. Worried. D. Supportive.

As a senior student in high school, I committed myself to active preparation for the upcoming college entrance examination. My days were filled with studying textbooks, practicing exam questions, and making constant revisions. It felt like I was going through the motions, with the weight of pressure and expectations weighing heavily on me. The atmosphere in our class was charged with anxiety. Classmates gathered to. discuss study strategies and shared last-minute tips. Teachers provided additional classes and mock exams (模拟考试) to copy real exam conditions. Everyone desired to achieve their best in the exams to boost their confidence.
Last Thursday, a surprise exam was given to us. We were to complete all the four tests in a single day, Chinese, Maths, English and the Sciences. We had been kept completely in the dark about the exam until the very last minute. Many classmates felt upset at taking it at such short notice. As a veteran (I am repeating the last year of high school), I was used to such a surprise as our dear teachers had in store for us. It was no secret that many other schools had already done the tests. Therefore, it would be a piece of cake to get the answers online.
This term I am paired with Peter by our class director in a tutor-pupil relationship. I am the tutor (老师) ; Peter my pupil. We are supposed to help each other. Since I am more experienced, I am expected to offer tips and tricks to Peter on studies and life.
When word came that the surprise exam was in place, Peter intended to cheat. He complained to me that he would be too worn out to complete all the four tests in such a short time. He added “The exam is not that vital. Many schoolmates have got the keys anyway.”
Hearing Peter s complaint, I got extremely angry.

Dear Tony,
I’m really sorry to hear that you’re not getting used to the high-school life in the US and feel lonely. Here are some suggestions that I hope can help you.
First, you can turn to your teachers for help. The teachers there will give you a hand with both study and life problems. Second, take an active part in after-school activities. There are many clubs which you can join and where you can meet people with similar interests. What’s important is that you should communicate more with classmates. You’ll find that sharing your feelings can make you feel less alone.
I believe you’ll adapt to the new life soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Hearing Peter’s complaint, I got extremely angry. I criticised him mercilessly for a while. I told him that we should cherish each exam as an opportunity to learn and improve rather than treat it mindlessly. At this, Peter flushed. I could see a look of shame and embarrassment creeping across his face. I also asked Peter to be honest and consistent throughout the exam. Hopefully, his integrity would not be compromised by external forces. Having listened to my instructions, Peter nodded repeatedly. He promised that he would not misbehave himself in the tests.
The day came when the results were out. As usual, some students were happy while others were worried. Strangely enough, this time those who got worried included a couple of classmates who had made it to the very top of the league table. They felt uneasy for lack of a clear conscience. Even though neither Peter nor I had earned impressive grades in the exam, we learned a lot from it. The exam helped us to see not only where we were weak in our lessons but also the importance of staying true to our hearts.
