When Leon Martin asked for his parents’ advice on how to become a UX designer, they both went silent. “In fact, I had no idea what he was talking about.” said Anne, his mother.
Even when her 18-year-old son explained that it was something about “behind the scenes” online design, his mother was still a bit lost. “I felt like I had totally failed as a parent,” she said. “My job as a parent is to open doors so my children can achieve best of their ability, but how can I do that when I don’t even understand what their dreams are?”
________ Research has found that more than 2/3 of parents in England are now facing the problem that, when their children express interest in job choices, they may know nothing about them. Over 75% of parents feel it is impossible to offer their children good advice in such a fast-changing job market.
Michelle Rea did a survey of over 2,000 parents of secondary school students in England. She found that many parents were afraid their children would just stop talking about their career plans simply because their parents could hardly follow them. “We all know parents’ opinions and suggestions play an important role in shaping their children’s career dreams,” she said. “But we usually depend much on our own experiences. And things have changed so much since most of us were at school.”

Judy was about to turn 7 years old when her mom suggested a new way to celebrate her birthday. “What would you think about donating your gifts to a children’s hospital?” her mom said.
At first, Judy wasn’t sure. Then she gave it some thought. “It can be a good idea.” Judy told TIME for Kids. “I already had everything I needed, and these kids that were going through things at the hospital— they needed it more than I did.”
Now a freshman in high school, Judy continues to bring joy to kids and teens being treated for serious illnesses. In December 2023, it was her 9th year to donate her birthday gifts to the children’s hospital in San Antonio, Fexas.
“Just to see their little faces when she hands them the gifts, that’s always been our favorite part,” says Judy’s mom, Sondra Perez. “Seeing the kids’ reactions just touches our heart.”
Kids, 10 and older are more often hospitalized for mental health problems. Whatever the patient’s age, a hospital stay can be stressful. Judy’s effort is a bright light during a difficult time.
Along with an invitation to Judy’s party, her friends get a list of gift ideas for kids at the hospital. For the littlest patients, gifts might include building blocks or toy trains. “And for the teenagers, my age or older,” Judy says, “it might be nail polish or books.”
After the first round of donations, Judy shares the list with family, coaches, and teammates. The number of donations “grows every year,” she says, but she doesn’t keep an exact count. Instead, she judges by sight. “We measure how much of the carpet it covers in our living room,” Judy says. “Last year, it covered the whole carpet (地毯).”
Then it’s time to share the gifts with kids at the hospital. “Seeing other people’s happiness—— that’s all that matters to me,” Judy says.
Natalie Gutierrez works in the public relations office at the children’s hospital. She has seen firsthand the influence of Judy’s gift-giving. “She puts smiles on the faces of these little patients in our hospital and on our nurses and doctors.” Gutierrez says. “They are all amazed at how generous she was at such a young age.”
Judy’s efforts to help kids in the hospital have encouraged others to follow in her footsteps. Friends have collected and donated gifts for their birthdays too. And Judy says her 11-year-old twin sister helps animals by donating to the Humane Society.
“Giving to others, it’s just a good feeling to have at the end of the day,” Judy says. “I want to keep doing this as long as I can.”
36.How many times has she donated her gifts to the children’s hospital before 2024?
A.7. B.8. C.9. D.10.

D.Because she brings these kids happiness during their difficult time.

五、阅读填空(共20小题;每小题1分,满分20分)
A.请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填1个单词。请将答案填写在答题卡的相应横线上。
This is an unusual truth that anyone older than 25 will already know: as life goes on, time seems to speed up. Think back to childhood when holidays seemed to last forever and you attended a school for what felt like decades. Now consider last year, by contrast, and it probably raced by. As those in their 30s and 40s will know, the effect gets worse with age—and, for people in their 70s, a year can flash by what seems like days. “Where did the time go?” we wonder.
The best reason is that we can keep the important facts in mind longer when our brains have to process more information. Childhood and young adulthood are full of novelty (新奇)—the first time you rode a bike, had a romance, get a job—but, as we get older, things get more routine (常规). You can test this out by remembering a recent experience of novelty in your life, such as travel. A few years back, I went skiing for the first time, and that four-day trip still feels “long”. But I might have difficulty noticing a four-day period in my ordinary life.
One way that can work things out, then, is easy to see: try lots of new things. Travel more, if you can, and to strange places. Try new hobbies and meet new people—you’ll be using your brain with a lot of efforts, and the result will be a life that feels longer, more meaningful. But small changes work, too: even making a change in the route (路线) you take to the office, reading different kinds of novels or choosing a different place to buy your sandwich at lunchtime will have an influence on your feelings.
But novelty can only go so far. Besides, a fulfilling (令人满意的) life requires routine: you can’t build deep relationships, or rise through the ranks at work if you always make new friends or get new jobs or even have new husbands or wives. That’s why the Buddhist teacher Shizen Young suggests another method: learn to meditate (冥想). Even a few minutes a day will get you to have better concentration (专注), and the better you get at concentrating, and the more information your brain will take in during any experience, no matter how boring.
You need to believe in yourself. You’ll be making your whole life a little more novel (新颖的). You’ll be more present and time will pass less quickly; in fact, you’ll make your life longer—without magic pills or creative medical technology.
How to stop time 56 up
The problem
It is not a common truth to anyone who is 57 25 years old that time seems to go faster as life goes on. The 58 you get, the faster time races by.
The 59 of the problem
When things become usual in our life, it might be 60 for you to pay attention to them and so on time passes by. So, experiencing something fresh and special can make you 61 things longer.
Advice on how to solve the problem
●It takes you a lot of efforts to use your brain when trying new things, making you feel that your life is longer and 62 more to you.
●Changing something a little can also make a 63 to your feelings.
●Learning to meditate helps people 64 their concentration and take in more information from boring experiences.
Conclusion
Trust yourself. 65 there might be no new medical technology, you can still live a bit more novel life and experiencing slow flow of time actually makes your life longer.
