Friends are a part of our lives. In my life, I have a best friend named Lucy. She means a lot to me. My life would be less colorful without her. Although we sometimes argue, we still treat each other as best friends.
We met each other four years ago. She said hello to me with a sweet smile. I guessed that she was a gentle girl. And she really was. When I was in trouble, she always stood by me and made me feel better.
This winter holiday, we went to the amusement park Happy Valley together. We had fun together on the roller coaster (过山车). We held each other’s hands and shouted loudly when we were riding the roller coaster. It was so exciting. The ride made me feel a little sick, so she bought a bottle of water for me. This experience left me with a lot of good memories and made our friendship stronger.
There is a line in the movie Soulmate that says, “If you step on someone’s shadow, you will never leave each other.” So I will try my best to “step on her shadow”. Many adults think that children can’t be friends forever. But I don’t believe this.

Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert (沙漠), so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.
46. Where is this passage most probably from?
A. A storybook. B. An art magazine.
C. A guidebook. D. A science magazine.

A. Secret. B. Choice. C. Reason. D. Feeling.
49. What are people advised to do according to the last paragraph?
A. To help animals. B. To travel at night.
C. To keep city lights on. D. To develop unusual abilities.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can make public places overcrowded. The local people are unhappy about this because they also want to enjoy these places. If tourists cause too much traffic, the local people will feel the same. They will then begin to dislike tourists and start treating them impolitely. But they often forget how much tourism can help the local economy (经济) . It is important to think about how tourism affects the local people. The local customs and beauty should be kept by the local government to attract tourists. Meanwhile, the government should care about the health and happiness of the local people when developing tourism.
Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people may leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry because they can make more money there. As a result, other parts of the local economy may suffer. On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, many people may become jobless.
It costs a lot of money to build large hotels, airports, first-class roads and other support facilities (设施). For example, each room of a first-class hotel usually costs about 50,000 dollars. If the rooms of the hotel aren’t used most of the time, the owner of the hotel will lose money.
Building a hotel is just the beginning. The planning and building of all of the other related support facilities require the effort of a large number of people. If these facilities are not used because there are not enough tourists, in the long run, the economy will suffer.
51. According to the author, too much traffic caused by tourism will make the local people feel ________.
A. excited B. satisfactory C. unhappy D. confused
52. According to the author, proper development of tourism is ________ for the economy.
A. useless B. helpful C. dangerous D. responsible

Writing a wish-list to parents and waiting to open presents —festivals are often about enjoying treats. Although it can be fun, it’s easy to overlook other people in all the excitement. So we should care about the others’ feelings. Did you know that giving to others could actually make you happier?
Giving means offering something free to a family member, a friend, a stranger or a whole community. Choosing a thoughtful gift is one common way to give during some festivals, but giving is about much more than presents. “Giving isn’t just about physical things; it can be something as simple as giving your time to people,” explains Georgina Bennett from the organisation (组织) Action for Children. “For example, helping family and friends with jobs around the house or helping an elderly neighbour cross the street is giving too.”
Scientists have found that pleasure centres in our brain (大脑) become active when we give to others. “First of all, giving can boost (使增长) our happiness,” explains Bennett. According to some scientists, people who give to others report greater happiness than those who treat themselves. What’s more, giving can also help us feel more connected to other people.
Now you may want to give to others, but how? “There are lots of things that you can do. They may not cost anything or the cost may be really small,” advises Bennett. “For example, giving your time by playing with younger relatives or helping with the family pet. Baking (烘焙), writing letters to loved ones or donating (捐赠) toys and clothes are other ways to give during some festivals. Even simple things like giving food you no longer need to your local food bank can make a really big difference.

三、阅读理解(本大题共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)
A
Friends are a part of our lives.
Maybe we won’t always spend all of our time together. But I will enjoy the time I spend with her and the good memories she has given me.
41. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. Lucy is important to the writer. B. The writer’s life would be more colorful without Lucy.
C The writer never argues with Lucy. D. It’s difficult for the writer to get on well with Lucy.
42. How long have the writer and her friend known each other?
A Since she was 4 years old. B. Since last winter. C. For four years. D. For five years.
43. What did the writer and her friend do during the winter holiday?
A. They climbed a mountain. B. They rode a roller coaster together.
C. They volunteered at an amusement park. D. They watched the movie Soulmate.
44. The writer will “step on her friend’s shadow” because ________.
A. she wants to play a game with her B. she wants her life to be like a movie
C. she hopes their friendship will last forever D. she can only do this before becoming an adult
45. From the passage, we know that the writer’s friend is ________.
A. helpful and caring B. strong and smart C. brave and honest D. gentle and polite
B
47. How can a certain kind of ants find their way?
A. By imagining the way. B. By counting their steps.
C. By bringing food together D. By walking through a forest.
48. What does the underlined word “mystery” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Secret. B. Choice. C. Reason. D. Feeling.
49. What are people advised to do according to the last paragraph?
A. To help animals. B. To travel at night.
C. To keep city lights on. D. To develop unusual abilities.
50. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. Birds’ Sense of Light B. Fish’s Sense of Smell
C. Animals’ Sense of Direction D. Animals’ Sense of Magnetic Field
C
A. useless B. helpful C. dangerous D. responsible
53. In order to attract tourists, the government may try to ________.
A. keep taxes low B. create clear laws and rules
C. build many first-class hotels D. keep the local customs and beauty
54. What could happen if there is not enough tourism?
A. More roads need to be rebuilt. B. Hotel owners will feel relaxed.
C. Many hotels need to be redesigned. D. Some people will have no jobs to do.
55. What is the main idea of this article?
A. The importance of planning tourism. B. The reasons why people lose their jobs.
C. The advantages of developing tourism. D. The disadvantages of building too many hotels.
