By Mr. Able Book 6 Unit 5 Learning from nature Starting out 外研社2019版 选择性必修第二册 Read the quotes and answer the question. The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration. Claude Monet A painter should regard nature as their teacher, and never stick with just one style of painting. Zhang Daqian Let nature be your teacher. William Wordsworth Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience. Ralph Waldo Emerson Activity 1 Lead-in What is the common message conveyed in these quotes? They have a close relation with nature and they respect nature and get inspirations from nature. The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration. Claude Monet Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French painter, a founder of French Impressionist painting. Monet’s method involved painting the same scene many times in order to capture the changing of light and the passing of the seasons. A painter should regard nature as their teacher, and never stick with just one style of painting. Zhang Daqian Zhang Daqian(1899-1983) was a Chinese painter, and he is regarded as one of the most gifted masters of the 20th century. Originally a guohua painter, he also became renowned as a modern impressionist and expressionist painter by the 1960s. Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience. Ralph Waldo Emerson Let nature be your teacher. William Wordsworth William Wordsworth (1770–1850) was an English Romantic poet who, along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798). Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) was an American essayist, lecturer and poet, and one of the most influential writers and thinkers of the 19th century in the United States, who, in the mid-19th century, led New England Transcendentalism (新英格兰超验主义或称“美国文艺复兴”,是美国的一种文学和哲学运动。它宣称存在一种理想的精神实体,超越于经验和科学之处,通过直觉得以把握。) Have you ever learnt anything from nature? Can you give examples? Activity 1 Lead-in Watching birds build nests has taught me to work hard on school projects and make them as good as I can. Planting seeds and watching them grow has taught me that everything needs care and patience to reach its potential. Seeing the seasons change has taught me that change is normal and leads to new beginnings. This helps me be positive about transitions. What lessons from nature are mentioned in the video? Activity 2 Watch and answer Trees give us lessons about ________________________. Succulents in deserts give us lessons about ___________ ______________________. From birds, we learn to ___________________________ ____________________. From salmon, we learn the importance of ____________ in order to achieve our goals. Ants teach us to _________________________________. What lessons from nature are mentioned in the video? Activity 2 Watch and answer strength in the face of hard times adapt to the environment learning to spread our wings and fly to reach our full potential perseverance embrace responsibility and always do our best Which one inspires you the most? Activity 2 Watch and answer Lessons from Nature There is much wisdom to be found on Earth, but perhaps the best teacher of all is nature itself. Here are some lessons nature can teach us, if we look and listen carefully. Trees bend and flow with the winds of nature's storms. When a tree's branches break, they grow back and give us fruit once again. Trees give us lessons about strength in the face of hard times. Deserts are hot, dry places, where it seems no plants can grow. But some, known as succulents, have adapted to this environment by storing water in the ir thick stems and leaves. When we learn to adapt, we can get the most from situations and achieve things that seem impossible. For birds, taking that first flight can be scary. But without taking risks, nothing can be achieved. Like birds, we all need to learn to spread our wings and fly to reach our full potential. At the end of their lives, salmon return to the freshwater streams in which they were born. To do this, they swim hundreds of kilometres up river, determined to achieve their goal of returning home. From these salmon, we can learn the importance of perseverance in order to achieve our goals. We can even learn from some of nature's smallest creatures. Ants live and work together. The individual an t has its responsibilities, each of which is necessary for the community to function. Ants teach us to embrace responsibility and always do our best. Nature can indeed teach us many important lessons. But perhaps the first one is to respect nature, and emulate its ways in our lives. Activity 3 Listen and fill in the blanks 9 By Mr. Able Book 6 Unit 5 Learning from nature Understanding ideas 外研社2019版 选择性必修第二册 Activity 1 Lead in What are shown in the pictures? termite ['tɜːmaɪt] mound (白蚁堆) birds’ nest cell walls sailboat lotus flower algae How could you associate them with architecture? (P69) Nature in Architecture 1 Trees, plants and flowers are all around us and we enjoy their beauty every day. In fact, we are so used to them that we may even take them for granted without realising how much inspiration they have given us. When we look at a pine cone, we might think how much it looks like the tiles on a roof. An open flower might make us think how closely it resembles an umbrella. It is natural to think in this way, but of course it wasn't the umbrella that inspired the flower or the roof that inspired the pine cone. 2 Nature has inspired many of the most fascinating designs around us, including those in architecture. From Barcelona's forest-like Sagrada Familia to the modern style of Beijing's Water Cube, nature is presented in various architectural designs. Today, architects continue to explore ways to capture the beauty of natural forms, to mimic the way nature works or even to make natural organisms part of a building. Activity 3 Intensive reading Organise information from the passage and complete the diagram. ArtScience Museum, Singapore 3 People whose interest is exploring the relationship between art and science will enjoy Singapore's ArtScience Museum. The building was designed to show the connection between nature and the modern city environment in which it sits. Shaped to resemble a lotus flower, it appears to float above the waterfront promenade and the water that surrounds it. Its roof collects rainwater and channels it 35 metres down to a waterfall in the centre of the space. The water is then recycled through the building's plumbing system. Visitors are often amazed to find themselves in an urban building that so truly captures the beauty of natural forms. (P69) The Eastgate Centre, Harare 4 Harare's Eastgate Centre is a superb example of biomimicry. To use biomimicry is to create structures based on natural forms and processes. Zimbabwean architect Mick Pearce was inspired to create the Centre while watching a nature documentary in which termites were constructing their nests. The insects built mounds covered in little holes designed to allow air to move freely in and out of the mounds. In a similar way, the Eastgate Centre has a “skin” covered in holes. During the day, warm air is drawn into the building through the holes, cooling as it reaches the middle of the building. At night, the heat absorbed by the wall during the day warms the cool air, creating a comfortable temperature inside. The design reduces the need for traditional air conditioning and heating systems, so the building uses less energy and costs less to run. To 5 ______________________ Based on the form and process of termite mounds, Harare’s Eastgate Centre also has little holes in the walls allowing air to 6 ____________________________________, thus reducing the need for 7 ____________________________________. (P69) 21 Let’s See How Termites Inspired a Building That Can Cool Itself. 22 The Algae House, Hamburg 5 The world's first algae-powered building is in Hamburg, Germany. The surface of the apartment building is covered in panels that contain algae. The algae are fed with liquid nutrients and carbon dioxide to encourage them to grow. In bright sunshine, they grow faster and provide shade. The panels also capture heat from the sun and convert it into energy that powers the building. And that's not all -- the algae inside the panels can be harvested and used to produce fuel. The building therefore not only responds to its environment and uses less energy, but also reduces damage to the environment by generating its own renewable energy. Activity 3 Intensive reading Organise information from the passage and complete the diagram. (P69) To 8________________________________ The Algae House is covered in panels containing algae. (P69) 24 6 Creating buildings such as these enables us to live in closer harmony with our environment. To meet the needs of today while protecting the world of tomorrow may be a challenge, but even the simplest organisms can help teach us how to achieve this.
