The Answer Is In the Trees
Dave Meko, a scientist at the University of Arizona, noticed that from 1999 to the following years it became drier and drier. And water levels in the huge Colorado River were dropping rapidly. This was the b 51 of a serious drought (干旱). Everyone began asking, “How long will it last?” Meko believed that he could find the answer in the trees.
Meko is a tree-ring expert. He studies the rings within a tree to find information about climate change. Each year, a tree adds a new layer of wood. These layers look like a series of rings. During times of h 52 rainfall, a ring is wide. When there is a shortage of water, a ring is narrow. These rings are nature’s record of rainfall and climate change.
Meko and his team quickly started a new research project. Their goal was to find out how long previous droughts lasted. The team collected as many old wood samples as possible. They tested wood samples from 1,200 years ago until the p 53 . When they examined the rings, the news about rainfall in the past was not good.
Meko’s research showed that the 20th century was an unusually wet time. Trees from this period had wide, healthy rings. Rain was plentiful during that century, millions of people moved to the region. Before that time, however, the rings showed that droughts occurred on a r 54 basis. In fact, drought was part of the usual climate pattern. There were severe droughts in the 900s, the 1100s, and the late 1200s.
Human history s 55 to support Meko’s findings. The native Anasazi lived in this area for hundreds of years, starting around 500 AD.They were farmers and depended on water to grow their crops. However, at the end of the 13th century, the Anasazi suddenly left the area. Experts do not know e 56 why the Anasazi left. They think it was because there was no longer enough water to farm. And Meko’s tree rings clearly show a serious drought at that time.
How long will the current drought last? Using nature’s c 57 from the past, experts predict that this drought may continue for another 50 years.

D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答问题) (12 分)
Dreams, Cheers and Tears
JUST think about it: How long is 46 seconds? A computer might take 46 seconds to start up. And it might take you that long to lace up your sneakers. But on August 4, swimmer Pan Zhanle swam 100 meters in 45.92 seconds. With their amazing speed, he and his teammates redefined (重新定义) the game. They became the first non-American team to win the Olympic men’s 4×100m medley relay in more than 40 years.
That was just one of China’s many breakthrough moments from this summer’s Olympics. Three days earlier, Pan had shocked the world in the men’s 100m freestyle. Like a flying fish, he touched the wall in 46.40 seconds. It was a new world record. Outside the pool, “Queen Wen,” or Zheng Qinwen, won China’s first Olympic tennis gold. Deng Yawen bagged China’s first gold medal in BMX freestyle.
One thing that struck me was how young these champions are. Most of them were born this century. Diver Quan Hongchan already has three Olympic gold medals, yet she is only 17 years old. I spend my days writing for kids, but now, I’m finding myself writing about many of them because, even at their young age, they’re already making waves on the world stage.
The gold medalists certainly got the most attention. Some athletes, however, made history even without winning medals. One of them is skater Cui Chenxi. In the women’s skateboarding street final, the 13-year-old finished fourth. It was China’s best result so far in this Olympic event.
Naturally, while some cried tears of joy, others shed tears of regret. Swimmer Zhang Yufei returned home with one silver and five bronze medals but no gold. The 26-year-old isn’t sure about her chances for the 2028 Games. All athletes want gold medals, but “it’s a competitive world.” Zhang said in an interview. “You can’t always get what you want even if you’ve done your best.”
It will be another four years until the next Olympics, but our athletes are already dreaming big. Do you also have a dream? How about chasing it alongside your favorite sports heroes?
58.Which country’s team did Pan Zhanle and his teammates defeat in the Olympic men’s 4×100m medley relay after more than 40 years?
59.Pan Zhanle set a new world record with a time of 46.40 seconds, didn’t he?
60.What Olympic achievement did Zheng Oinwen make?
61.How did 13-year-old skater Cui Chenxi perform in the women’s skateboarding street final?
62.Why did Swimmer Zhang Yufei return home in tears of regret?
63.Do you think winning gold medals is a good way to measure an athlete’s success? Why or why not?
【答案】58.The American team. 59.Yes, he did. 60.Zheng Qinwen won China’s first Olympic tennis gold. 61.Cui Chenxi finished fourth in the women’s skateboarding street final. 62.Because she won one silver and five bronze medals but no gold. 63.No. Winning gold medals is not the only way to measure an athlete’s success because success can also be defined by personal improvement, breaking records, or inspiring others.
