From a young age, Michael Platt loved two things: the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and cupcakes. He imagined ways he too could fight for justice. He memorized figures about income inequality and childhood hunger. But he also spent afternoons at his home computer, amazed by YouTube bakers who made perfect cupcakes.
When his parents gave him a pair of Toms shoes for Christmas three years ago, Michael saw a way to connect his twin passions. At age 11, he founded a bakery that operates on the Toms one-for-one model: For every cupcake, cake or cookie that Michael sells, he donates another to the homeless and hungry. Twice a month, he heads to locations to pass out goodies. Michael, now 13, said he especially enjoys handing out cupcakes to kids.
“I know I like cupcakes, but also cupcakes are part of a child’s childhood so they should get them,” said Michael, noting that he always eats one with whippedicing (打发的糖霜) on his birthday.
Michael calls his baking business Michaels Desserts. He left out the apostrophe (撇号) as a reminder that he is baking for others, not himself. “I always wanted to have a purpose for what I do.” he said. “It’s all about helping people--- not just having a purpose for yourself, but thinking about, ‘How does this touch other things? ”
When he started the bakery, he knew that he wanted his business to do more than make money. That’s why the intention of Michaels Desserts is fighting hunger and giving back, which Michael accomplishes through his giveaways. Michael hopes his cupcakes inspire others to work for social equality.
Sometimes, Michael admits, he grows tired of being in the kitchen. Then he remembers the homeless boy he met once while handing out cupcakes. A couple of days afterward, the boy’s father messaged Michael on Facebook to say that his son, encouraged by Michael’s example, now desired to become a baker.
“That inspired me,” Michael said. He smiled and looked down.
24. What inspired Michael’s method of helping the poor?
A. His admiration for Martin Luther King.
B. A Christmas gift his parents gave him.
C. A bakery that runs on a one-for-one model.
D. A baking program he watched on YouTube.
25. Why did Michael name his business Michaels Desserts instead of “Michael’s Desserts”?
A. To attract more consumers.
B. To show its connection with Toms shoes.
C. To remind himself to always think about others.
D. To remind himself to have a life purpose.
26. What does Michaels Desserts intend to do?
A. Provide children with perfect cupcakes.
B. Inspire more people to love baking.
C. Help homeless people.
D. Feed hungry people.
27. Which of the following best describes Michael?
A. Sympathetic and selfless. B. Honest and outgoing.
C. Talented and modest. D. Ambitious and diligent.

Researchers have created a device that uses brain waves to translate what paralyzed (瘫痪的) people who can’t speak intend to say into sentences. The device, created by a team at the University of California, San Francisco, analyzes brain waves to decode what a patient is trying to say and then displays the text on a computer screen.
Volunteering to test the device was a man in his late 30s who 15 years ago suffered a brain-stem stroke that caused widespread paralysis and robbed him of speech.
The researchers implanted electrodes (电极) on the surface of the man’s brain, over the area that controls speech. A computer analyzed the patters when he attempted to say common words such as “water” or “good”, eventually becoming able to differentiate between 50 words that could generate more than 1,000 sentences.
Prompted (提示) with questions such as “How are you today?” or “Are you thirsty?”, the device eventually enabled the man to answer “I am very good” or “No, I am not thirsty”—not voicing the words but translating them into text, the team said.
It takes about three to four seconds for the words to appear on the screen after the man tries to say them. That’s not nearly as fast as speaking, but quicker than tapping out a response.
Harvard neurologists Leigh Hochberg and Sydney Cash called the work a “pioneering demonstration”. They said, “If the technology pans out, it eventually could help people with injuries, strokes or illnesses like Lou Gehrig’s disease whose brains prepare messages for delivery but those messages are trapped.”
The team has spent years mapping the brain activity that leads to speech. How did they know the device interpreted the man’s words correctly? They started by having him try to say specific sentences such as, “Please bring my glasses,” rather than answering open-ended questions until the machine translated accurately most of the time.
Next steps include ways to improve the device’s speed, accuracy and vocabulary size — and maybe one day allow a computer-generated voice rather than text on a screen — while testing a small number of additional volunteers.
28. What do we know about the device in the text?
A. It can make paralyzed people speak again.
B. It was implanted into a man’s heart.
C. It can produce words on a screen.
D. It can help restore patients’ lost memory.
29. What does the underlined word “differentiate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. learn B. distinguish C. organize D. speak
30. Which of the following may the researchers of the team agree with?
A. The device may have a promising future.
B. The device can do anything for paralyzed people.
C. In the future the device can produce pictures on a computer.
D. In the future the device can be affordable to more people.
31. What may be the best title of the text?
A. Researchers Found Good Methods to Help Paralyzed Patients.
B. Device Uses Brain Waves of Paralyzed Man to Help Him Communicate.
C. Paralyzed Man Communicates Normally with a Speech-aided Device.
D. Repeated Questions Given to Paralyzed Man Make Device More Intelligent.

Cikgu Azam worked in an IT department. At the same time, he had a side job where he prepared activities for school children with special needs.
In 2007, during a program, he succeeded in helping a boy with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). “While I was assisting him, I could see the tears of joy coming from his parents who were there with us as well,” he said. “If you had more expert knowledge, you’d help more people,” his friends told him. With that, he went back to school to get a degree in special education.
In 2009, he became a special education teacher in a school. Trained to help students with cerebral palsy, when he came to the school in the first year, he was surprised to learn that he would also be teaching blind students. However, he did not back down in the face of such pressure, Cikgu took the time to educate himself on what would best help his students.
“It’s disappointing to see they are so used to their closed environment. It’s not because they are disabled, but because they don’t have the courage to explore the outside world that has caused them to be depressed.” He changed this by helping them run, simply putting his hands on their shoulders to guide them. One of his students, Nur Yusrina Alisya, won several awards in sporting events.
But as he’s gotten older, it’s difficult to keep up with them. “So, one day, I saw one student pushing a foldable trolley (推车) and the idea suddenly came to mind,” he said. Ever since then, Cikgu has made it his mission to create an even better device. He’s built Caballus RAFVI which is named after a blind but brave horse. “My students need it so they can participate in sporting activities. I’ll try to improve it,” he said. “I’m going to stick with my job though I’m getting older.”
32. What made Cikgu get a degree in special education?
A. The IT department’s requirements.
B. His success in helping a boy.
C The boy’s parents assisting him.
D. The encouragement of his friends.
33. How did Cikgu find his first year in the special education school?
A. Challenging. B. Disturbing.
C. Promising. D. Refreshing.
34. What did Cikgu think the students lack?
A. Healthy bodies. B. Self-confidence.
C. Daily exercise. D. Families’ concern.
35. What can we infer about Cikgu from the last paragraph?
A. He’ll retire immediately. B. He’s looking after horses.

In a small town in New York, there lived a young girl named Emily who had always dreamed of becoming a writer. Her parents, however, had different plans for her future. They wanted her to study business and take over the family store. Despite their wishes, Emily continued to write stories in her free time, hoping to one day published a book.
On a chilly winter morning, Emily was reading a magazine when she noticed an ad for a writing competition. She decided to give it a shot and submitted a short story without giving it much thought. Time passed, and she had almost forgotten about it until one day she received a notification informing her that she was invited to attend the final round of the writing competition in New York City. Excited and surprised, she realized her love for writing had earned her recognition.
Emily was overjoyed, but her excitement quickly turned to disappointment when her parents refused to support her. They argued that the competition was a distraction from her studies and her future responsibilities. Heartbroken but determined, Emily decided to find a way to attend the competition on her own.
She took on extra jobs after school and saved every penny she could. She also reached out to local businesses, asking for sponsorships. Her persistence paid off when a local bookstore owner, Mr. Thompson, offered to cover half the cost of her trip. With the remaining money she had saved, Emily was able to afford the competition.
In the following weeks, Emily was busy getting ready. She used all her spare time to improve her writing. On late nights, she leaned over her desk, writing down ideas in a notebook and revising sentences to make them clear and full of emotion. During this time, Emily read many books to gain new inspiration and discussed with friends who shared their love for writing, getting lots of useful advice. Every day, she rose early to practice writing and went to bed late after completing her tasks. She was a bit nervous but also thrilled at the thought of the upcoming competition.

W: Let’s sort them out there. Story books for donation. Academic ones for recycling. By the way, do you know the center is looking for volunteers to deliver the donations?

W: Hmm. Can you tell us about a race?
M: OK. There’s a race called The Dragon’s Back, which takes place over five days and over a distance of 200 miles across the mountains in Wales. But before listeners sign up for it, I should point out that only people with lots of experience are allowed to enter.
W: So it’s very demanding?
M: Yes. Even experienced runners need to get used to running over rough grass, rocky paths, or through mountain streams. The training is very hard. A lot of running injuries are due to the repetitive nature of movement, but the hardest part for me is running downhill, which is more difficult than running uphill.

18. Why does the speaker give the talk?
A. To support the idea of banning fireworks.
B. To announce a new regulation on fireworks.
C. To free animals from being hurt by fireworks.
19. What issue does the speaker stress about fireworks?
A. They are too loud. B. They cause pollution. C. They can be dangerous.
20. What is the speaker’s attitude toward China’s drone display?
A. Uncertain. B. Supportive. C. Curious.
A 19. C 20. B
Many people in the UK enjoy fireworks, but I am part of those who think they should be banned (禁止). While it is nice for families to go and see professional firework shows, too many people are able to buy them privately. Children in towns and cities are regularly seen setting them off dangerously, even aiming them at animals or other people. This year, one woman has had enough. She made a request to ban the private sale of fireworks. She had managed to get one million people to sign her request, and was supported by an animal charity, due to how many animals were scared and frightened by fireworks. I understand letting fireworks off at New Year or other cultural events, but more and more people are using drone (无人驾驶飞机) shows instead. I read in the newspaper that China set the record for using over 10,000 drones rather than fireworks during a show. I think that is the future for these types of celebrations.

C A bakery that runs on a one-for-one model.
D. A baking program he watched on YouTube.
25. Why did Michael name his business Michaels Desserts instead of “Michael’s Desserts”?
A. To attract more consumers.
B. To show its connection with Toms shoes.
C. To remind himself to always think about others.
D. To remind himself to have a life purpose.
26. What does Michaels Desserts intend to do?
A. Provide children with perfect cupcakes.
B. Inspire more people to love baking.
C. Help homeless people.
D. Feed hungry people.
27. Which of the following best describes Michael?
A. Sympathetic and selfless. B. Honest and outgoing.
C. Talented and modest. D. Ambitious and diligent.

When his parents gave him a pair of Toms shoes for Christmas three years ago, Michael saw a way to connect his twin passions. At age 11, he founded a bakery that operates on the Toms one-for-one model: For every cupcake, cake or cookie that Michael sells, he donates another to the homeless and hungry.(三年前,当他父母送他一双Toms鞋作为圣诞礼物时,迈克尔看到了一种将他的孪生的爱好联系起来的方法。
Michael calls his baking business Michaels Desserts. He left out the apostrophe (撇号) as a reminder that he is baking for others, not himself.(Michael称他的烘焙公司为Michaels甜点。
That’s why the intention of Michaels Desserts is fighting hunger and giving back, which Michael accomplishes through his giveaways.(这就是为什么迈克尔甜点的目的是对抗饥饿和回馈,迈克尔通过他的赠品实现了这一点。)

Then he remembers the homeless boy he met once while handing out cupcakes.(迈克尔承认,有时他会厌倦在厨房里工作。 故选A。
C
D In the future the device can be affordable to more people.
C 29. B 30. A 31. B
根据第一段“Researchers have created a device that uses brain waves to translate what paralyzed (瘫痪的) people who can’t speak intend to say into sentences. The device, created by a team at the University of California, San Francisco, analyzes brain waves to decode what a patient is trying to say and then displays the text on a computer screen.(研究人员发明了一种设备,可以利用脑电波将瘫痪的不能说话的人想说的话翻译成句子。这种设备是由加州大学旧金山分校的一个研究小组发明的,通过分析脑电波来解码病人想说的话,然后在电脑屏幕上显示出来)”可知,文本中的装置,可以在屏幕上生成单词。故选C项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据前文“The researchers implanted electrodes (电极) on the surface of the man’s brain, over the area that controls speech. A computer analyzed the patters when he attempted to say common words such as “water” or “good”(研究人员将电极植入该男子的大脑表面,即控制语言的区域。当他试图说出“水”或“好”等常用词时,计算机分析了这些模式)”可知,计算机通过分析大脑控制语言的区域的变化来识别文字,推知differentiate应是“区分”之意,和B项意思相近。故选B项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“Harvard neurologists Leigh Hochberg and Sydney Cash called the work a “pioneering demonstration”. They said, “If the technology pans out, it eventually could help people with injuries, strokes or illnesses like Lou Gehrig’s disease whose brains prepare messages for delivery but those messages are trapped.”(哈佛大学的神经学家Leigh Hochberg和Sydney Cash称这项工作是“开创性的示范”。他们说:“如果这项技术成功,它最终可以帮助那些受伤、中风或患有卢伽雷氏症等疾病的人,他们的大脑为传递信息做好了准备,但这些信息被困住了。”)”可知,究人员可能同意这种设备可能有一个很好的未来。故选A项。
根据第一段“Researchers have created a device that uses brain waves to translate what paralyzed (瘫痪的) people who can’t speak intend to say into sentences. The device, created by a team at the University of California, San Francisco, analyzes brain waves to decode what a patient is trying to say and then displays the text on a computer screen.(研究人员发明了一种设备,可以利用脑电波将瘫痪的不能说话的人想说的话翻译成句子。这种设备是由加州大学旧金山分校的一个研究小组发明的,通过分析脑电波来解码病人想说的话,然后在电脑屏幕上显示出来)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述研究人员发明新设备,可利用一名瘫痪男子的脑电波,将他想说的话变成句子,所以B项“Device Uses Brain Waves of Paralyzed Man to Help Him Communicate.(设备利用瘫痪者的脑电波帮助他交流)”是本文最好的标题。故选B项。
D
C. The boy’s parents assisting him.
D. The encouragement of his friends.
33. How did Cikgu find his first year in the special education school?
A. Challenging. B. Disturbing.
C. Promising. D. Refreshing.
34. What did Cikgu think the students lack?
A. Healthy bodies. B. Self-confidence.
C. Daily exercise. D. Families’ concern.
35. What can we infer about Cikgu from the last paragraph?
A. He’ll retire immediately. B. He’s looking after horses.
C. He’s a potential inventor. D. He’ll participate in a sport.
D 33. A 34. B 35. C

根据第二段的最后两句“‘If you had more expert knowledge, you’d help more people,’ his friends told him. With that he went back to school to get a degree in special education.”(“如果你具备专业知识,你就能帮助更多的人。”
根据第三段的第二、三句“Trained to help students with cerebral palsy, when he came to the school in the first year, he was surprised to learn that he would also be teaching blind students. However, he did not back down in the face of such pressure.”(他接受的培训是帮助患有脑瘫的学生,但他第一年到学校时惊讶地发现他也要给失明的学生授课。 故选A项。
根据第四段的第二句“It’s not because they are disabled, but because they don’t have the courage to explore the outside world that has caused them to be depressed.”(并不是因为他们身患残疾,而是因为他们没有勇气去探索外面的世界,致使他们沮丧。)
根据最后一段的“one day, I saw one student pushing a foldable trolley (推车) and the idea suddenly came to mind(有一天,我看到一个学生推着一辆可折叠的手推车,我突然想到了这个想法)”以及“Ever since then, Cikgu has made it his mission to create an even better device. He’s built Caballus RAFVI which is named after a blind but brave horse.(从那以后,Cikgu把创造更好的设备作为他的使命。他建造了卡巴勒斯·拉夫维,这是以一匹失明但勇敢的马命名的)”可知,阿扎姆看到一个学生推着一辆可折叠手推车,这给了他发明灵感,于是他发明了旨在帮助失明学生跑步用的Caballus RAFVI设备,而且他还要不断地改进该设备。由此可推知,他是一个潜在的发明家。故选C项。
