How do the teenagers in the picture feel? Why do you think so? 2. What’s the probable relationship between them? Step 2 Getting to know learning objectives Have students read the unit overview on page 6 and answer the following question. What’s the topic of this unit? What will we do in this unit? Step 3 Talking about your good friend Have students talk about the qualities of good friends. Who is your best friend? What is he/she like? What makes him/her so special? Step 4 Learning about good qualities 1. Have students finish Part A on page 7. 2. Have students talk about the qualities of good friends and the explanation in Part A using complete sentences. e.g. Good friends should be _________, and they _________________. Step 5 Further thinking Have students answer the following questions. What other qualities can you find in good friends? Can you explain your idea? Step 6 Listening and filling Have students listen to the conversation in Part B on Page 7 and complete the table below. Name Ideas about qualities of good friends Supporting details Millie (1)__________ and (2) __________ They (3) __________ when you are unhappy. Step 7 Reading and and thinking 1. Have students read the tip in Part B and answer the following question. How does Mr Wu ask for opinions? 2. Have students read the conversation and answer the following questions. How do the students talk about their opinions of good friends? How does each student respond to show they agree with the previous student? What other expressions can you use to express agreement/disagreement? Step 8 Listening and reading Have students listen to the conversation and read along, and then read aloud in different roles. Step 9 Practising Have students work in groups and talk about what qualities are important in good friends using the conversation in Part B on page 7 as a model. A:What do you think makes good friends? B:Well, I think ... C: That’s true. They should .../ That’s an interesting view, but ... D: l couldn’t agree more./I’m not sure I agree. Good friends should ... A: I agree. And they ... Step 10 Discussion Have students discuss in groups of four and answer the following question. What role do friends play in our lives? Step 11 Proverbs Have students read the proverbs of friends. A friend in need is a friend indeed. A friend is never known till a man has need. The only way to have a good friend is to be one. Step 12 Self-reflection Have students finish Part C on page 7. What qualities do you think you have as a friend? Step 13 Summary Have students summarize what they have learnt in this lesson. Step 14 Homework Compulsory homework: Be grateful and make a postcard for your best friend.
