Music is not just a collection of sounds — it’s a powerful force that affects our lives in many ways. Scientists have been studying the effects of music on humans, and their findings are truly amazing.
A study from the University of Toronto showed that listening to music before a test can improve focus. Students who listened to calm music for 10 minutes before an exam scored higher on average than those who didn’t. Another research by the University of Oxford found that making music, like playing the guitar or singing, can boost (提升) people’s self-confidence. People who spent 30 minutes a day practicing music reported feeling more positive about themselves.
Moreover, music helps us connect with others. Whether it’s singing along at a concert or sharing playlists with friends, music creates a sense of community. So, the next time you listen to your favorite song or play an instrument, remember: music is much more than entertainment — it’s a key to a better mood, stronger focus, and deeper connections.

Is it time to stop visitors coming to Bath? That’s the question that leading travel guide Fodor’s Travel has asked its readers, in light of the fact that the ancient city — home to famous Roman baths and impressive Georgian architecture (建筑) — struggles to deal with levels of tourism it just wasn’t built for.
Fodor’s Travel’s Samantha Priestley points out that in high season and on weekends, visitors outnumber the locals in the city — population 94,000 — by 63 to one. Fodor’s Travel says: “The tourists who don’t stay long and don’t spend any money inside the city are the problem. Day-trippers create traffic problems in the streets while contributing very little to local business. This makes many locals unhappy because they think the day-trippers are causing trouble.”
That’s not a view shared by all. Libby Windle, founder of Shop Local Bath, tells Fodor’s Travel: “I personally love having a busy tourist industry in Bath and having lots of different people from all over the world visiting our beautiful city. Obviously, it can make you feel dejected if you’re trying to get from A to B in the city centre quickly, but it’s worth that.”
Fodor’s Travel puts forward the suggestion that a tourist tax (税) might create a better environment for thoughtful tourists to enjoy the city’s culture and history, and worries over what tourism does to historical sites could be reduced by the funds for their protection. At the same time, editors at Fodor’s Travel are thinking about whether to add Bath to its influential No List — places you should reconsider visiting that are suffering from over-tourism.
9.What do we know about Bath?
A.It is limiting the number of visitors.
B.It is expecting to be explored by more visitors.
C.It is trying to bring ancient buildings back to life.
D.It is facing challenges in managing high tourism levels.
10.How does Fodor’s Travel find those taking quick trips in Bath?
A.They’re thoughtful. B.They’re responsible.
C.They’re troublesome. D.They’re disorganized.
11.What does the underlined word “dejected” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Comfortable. B.Upset. C.Embarrassed. D.Safe.
12.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Benefits of tourism to Bath. B.Poor protection of historical sites.
C.Possible ways to manage Bath tourism. D.Bath’s increasing international influence.
D
There are numerous art forms in the world, each with its unique charm. Painting allows artists to express their vision on a flat surface. Whether it’s the vivid oil paintings with their rich colors and thick textures, or the delicate watercolor paintings that seem to hold a dreamy quality, every stroke tells a story. Sculpture, on the other hand, gives life to materials like stone, metal, or wood. The great stone sculptures from ancient times stand as a testament to human creativity, with their figures carved with precision and grace.
Music is another powerful art form that can stir our emotions. Classical music with its complex compositions and symphonic arrangements can transport us to another world. Pop music, with its catchy melodies and relatable lyrics, is loved by the masses. Dance is the art of movement. Ballet dancers move with such elegance and poise that they seem to defy gravity. And modern dance allows for more freedom of expression, with dancers using their bodies to convey deep emotions.
Literature has the power to create entire universes within the pages of a book. Novels can take us on epic adventures, while poetry captures the essence of a moment in the most beautiful and concise way. Theatre combines acting, dialogue, and sometimes music and dance to present stories in a live setting. From the tragic dramas of Shakespeare to the colorful musicals of Broadway, theatre offers a diverse range of experiences.

A.Oil paintings and Chinese paintings

Most of us don’t put much thought into the way we smile when we have our picture taken or meet someone new, but a recent study by scientists in the US found that certain types of smiles have a better impact on people than others.
According to the study, having a “good” smile is an important way to present ourselves well to other people. “A lot of people don’t understand how important their smiles are and how important this aspect of communication we do with each other every day is,” said Stephen Guy, a co-author of the research.
But what exactly is a good smile, and how did the scientists come to their conclusion? A group of 802 members of the public, aging from 18 to 82, were shown a 3D animated face. The face displayed different types of smiles, and the subjects were asked to rate them, from “creepy” to “pleasant”.
After analyzing the results, the scientists discovered that the “best” smiles are the ones where the mouth is at an angle of between 13 and 17 degrees, and the mouth isn’t too broad or perfectly straight. In simple terms, don’t smile like a shark if you’re trying to make a good impression.
It’s believed that the findings could be used in a number of ways, including making video game characters appear more realistic. The scientists also hope their work will help doctors who are trying to restore facial movement to patients who have suffered from strokes or other conditions.
But Guy pointed out that nobody should feel bad if they don’t match up to his study’s definition of perfection. “It is important to be clear that there is not just one really, really good smile,” he said. “Just because your smile is different... doesn’t mean it is in any way bad.”
17.The scientists’ conclusion is supported by ________.
A.professional research that was conducted B.questionnaires collected by researchers
C.theories that have been proved D.experiments that were carried out in the past
18.What can we learn about a good smile according to the study?
A.The broader your mouth is, the better your smile will be.
B.There is no good smile at all.
C.It has something to do with the angle of your mouth.
D.The smile is bad if it doesn’t match up to the definition of perfection.
19.To which aspect can we apply the scientists’ findings?
A.Bringing facial movement back. B.Curing severe strokes
C.Solving all kinds of problems. D.Playing video games.
20.What could be the best title for the passage?
A.What Are the Benefits of Smiling? B.Why Is Smiling Important?
C.What Are the Different Ways of Smiling? D.What’s a Good Smile?

B.There is no good smile at all.
C.It has something to do with the angle of your mouth.
D.The smile is bad if it doesn’t match up to the definition of perfection.
19.To which aspect can we apply the scientists’ findings?
A.Bringing facial movement back. B.Curing severe strokes
C.Solving all kinds of problems. D.Playing video games.
20.What could be the best title for the passage?

根据第一段“That’s the question that leading travel guide Fodor’s Travel has asked its readers, in light of the fact that the ancient city — home to famous Roman baths and impressive Georgian architecture (建筑) — struggles to deal with levels of tourism it just wasn’t built for.(这就是知名旅游指南《福多尔旅行指南》向读者提出的问题,因为这座历史悠久的城市(拥有著名的罗马浴场和宏伟的乔治亚建筑)正面临着其基础设施无法承受的游客数量所带来的挑战)”可知,巴斯在应对高游客量带来的管理问题方面面临挑战。故选D。
10.细节理解题。根据第二段“Day-trippers create traffic problems in the streets while contributing very little to local business. This makes many locals unhappy because they think the day-trippers are causing trouble.(一日游游客在街道上造成了交通拥堵,但却对当地经济贡献甚微。这让许多当地人感到不满,因为他们认为这些一日游游客给当地带来了麻烦)”可知,福多尔旅行社认为那些来巴斯进行短途旅行的游客很麻烦。故选C。
11.词句猜测题。根据上下文“it can make you feel dejected if you’re trying to get from A to B in the city centre quickly”(如果你想在市中心快速从A地到B地,这种情况会让你感到______),结合第二段“Day-trippers create traffic problems in the streets while contributing very little to local business.(短途游客在街道上造成了交通拥堵,但却对当地经济贡献甚微)”提到了游客多导致拥挤的现象,可推断“dejected”应表示负面情绪。结合选项,B选项“沮丧的”最为接近。故选B。
12.主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Fodor’s Travel puts forward the suggestion that a tourist tax (税) might create a better environment for thoughtful tourists to enjoy the city’s culture and history, and worries over what tourism does to historical sites could be reduced by the funds for their protection. At the same time, editors at Fodor’s Travel are thinking about whether to add Bath to its influential No List — places you should reconsider visiting that are suffering from over-tourism.(福多尔旅游公司提出了一项建议,即征收游客税或许能为那些注重体验的游客提供一个更好的环境,让他们能够更好地领略这座城市的文化与历史。同时,对于旅游业对历史遗迹造成损害的担忧或许也能因用于保护这些遗迹的资金而有所缓解。与此同时,福多尔旅游公司的编辑们正在考虑是否将巴斯列入其颇具影响力的“不推荐名单”——那些因过度旅游而遭受破坏、值得重新考虑是否前往的旅游地)”可知,最后一段主要讲了管理巴斯旅游业的可行方法。故选C。

【答案】17.A 18.C 19.A 20.D

That’s because Daisy is actually an AI chatbot. She was 23 by a U.K. phone company to speak to scammers on the phone and make them 24 they’re talking to a real person. Unfortunately, 25 people are easily cheated by scammers. In July 2024, a U.K. study found that about 67% of people over 75 were 26 of at least one scam (骗局) in the six months before the study-with nearly 75% of those being involved in phone scams.
Meet Daisy, who has been 27 to have conversations with phone scammers, and waste their 28 . Some conversations can last nearly an hour. She talks about her cat, Fluffy, and people in her family. In some conversations, she even gives the scammers what they eagerly want — 29 details. But of course, they’re prearranged and not 30 . “Daisy is also there to 31 you that the person you’re speaking to on the phone might be untruthful,” the company says.
And that’s the whole 32 — Daisy can’t stop scammers, but she can 33 them down. Whenever she’s on the 34 with a scammer, your parents, your grandparents, or your relatives are not being cheated, Daisy acts as a(n) 35 in the fight against fraud (诈骗).

【答案】Top Meal of the Day
Nowadays it’s common for many high-school students to skip breakfast, leading to both poor school performance and damage to their health.
When asked why they skip breakfast, some students say they think of breakfast as the least important meal of the day, and think it unnecessary, while others say they have too little time in the morning to have breakfast. And a third group, mostly girls, say they want to lose weight so they skip breakfast.
