A woman came to his restaurant and ordered a one dollar cup of cola. Then SHE quickly paid for her order and left. But SHE left a very generous tip of five hundred dollars for casey. Without saying anything. The woman left a note on the table where he wrote the reason for such a present. He turned out that casey met a very upset elderly lady in a supermarket a few days ago. He thought he lost her wallet, so he tried to make her happy by paying for her groceries. IT was only seventeen dollars, and although I hadn't found my job at that time, IT wasn't about the money, casey said. IT was about showing someone you care. The older lady turned out to be the mother of the generous visitor, and he was so depressed because her husband passed away on the same day three years ago. Nobody was paying attention to her. But casey, in the woman's note, SHE wrote, although we have a big successful family company, nothing makes my mom happy since my dad passed away. But your kind words made her day wonderful. In the first experiment, toddlers watched a scene in which two puppets (木偶) had conflicting goals: One was crossing a stage from right to left, and the other from left to right. The puppets met in the middle and stopped. Eventually one puppet bowed down and moved aside, letting the other one pass by. Then researchers asked the toddlers which puppet they liked. The result: 20 out of 23 toddlers picked the higher-status puppet — the one that did not bow or move aside. It seems that individuals can gain status for being dominant (占优势的) and toddlers like winners better than losers. But then researchers had another question: Do toddlers like winners no matter how they win? So, researchers did another experiment very similar to the one described above. But this time, the conflict ended because one puppet knocked the other down and out of the way. Now when the toddlers were asked who they liked, the results were different: Only 4 out of 23 children liked the winner. These data suggest that children already love a winner by the age of 21 — 31 months. This does not necessarily mean that the preference is inborn: 21 months is enough time to learn a lot of things. But if a preference for winners is something we learn, we appear to learn it quite early. Even more interesting, the preference for winners is not absolute. Children in our study did not like a winner who knocked a competitor down. This suggests that already by the age of 21 — 31 months, children’s liking for winners is balanced with other social concerns, including perhaps a general preference for nice or helpful people over aggressive ones. In a time when the news is full of stories of public figures who celebrate winning at all costs, these results give us much confidence. Humans understand dominance, but we also expect strong individuals to guide, protect and help others. This feels like good news. 24. Which of the following is the purpose of the experiments? A. To teach toddlers how to gain higher status. B. To offer toddlers a chance to watch a scene. C. To observe the process of toddlers’ solving a conflict. D. To find out toddlers' attitude towards winners and losers. 25. The toddlers regarded bowing and moving aside as ________. A. a sign of obeying rules B. a sign of gaining status C. a sign of giving in to the other D. a sign of showing good manners 26. What does the second experiment tell us about toddlers? A. They are excellent learners. B. They are always changeable. C. They show mercy to the loser. D. They value kindness over winning. 27. What does the author think of the results of the series of experiments? A. Disappointing. B. Encouraging. C. Unexpected. D. Controversial. 【答案】24. D 25. C 26. D 27. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了通过一系列实验研究幼儿对赢家和输家、欺凌者和受害者的态度。 【24题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“In a recent series of experiments at the University of California, researchers studied toddlers’ thinking about winners and losers, bullies (欺凌者) and victims. (在加州大学最近的一系列实验中,研究人员研究了幼儿对赢家和输家、欺凌者和受害者的看法。)”可知,实验的目的是为了了解幼儿对赢家和输家的态度。故选D。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“Eventually one puppet bowed down and moved aside, letting the other one pass by. Then researchers asked the toddlers which puppet they liked. The result: 20 out of 23 toddlers picked the higher-status puppet — the one that did not bow or move aside. (最终,一个木偶鞠躬并移到一边,让另一个木偶通过。然后研究人员问幼儿他们喜欢哪个木偶。结果是:23个幼儿中有20个选择了地位较高的木偶——那个没有鞠躬或移到一边的木偶。)”可知,幼儿把鞠躬和移到一边看作是向对方屈服的标志。故选C。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Children in our study did not like a winner who knocked a competitor down. This suggests that already by the age of 21 — 31 months, children’s liking for winners is balanced with other social concerns, including perhaps a general preference for nice or helpful people over aggressive ones. (我们研究中的孩子不喜欢把竞争对手撞倒的赢家。这表明,在21到31个月大的时候,孩子们对赢家的喜爱就已经与其他社会关注点相平衡,这可能包括总体上更喜欢善良或乐于助人的人,而不是好斗的人。)”可知,第二个实验告诉我们幼儿更看重善良而不是输赢。故选D。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“In a time when the news is full of stories of public figures who celebrate winning at all costs, these results give us much confidence. According to Boyer, the small increase in hormones associated with enjoying an afternoon of art is similar to that offered by exercise, making museum visits prescriptions ideal for the elderly experiencing pain that prevents them from regularly joining in physical activity. The museum visits are designed to improve traditional methods. As Bondil notes, spending time in a peaceful environment can provide a welcome distraction. “What is most important is this experience can help them escape from their own pain, ” she says. “When you enter the museum, you escape from the speed of our daily life. ” “I am convinced that in the 21st century, culture will be what physical activity was for health in the 20th century, ” said Bondil. “Some people would do well to recall that just in the 19th century, sports were believed to do harm to the body. Just as doctors now prescribe exercise, they will be able to prescribe a visit to the MMFA. ” 28. What does Hélène Boyer think of museum visits? A. They can cheer people up. B. B In a recent series of experiments at the University of California, researchers studied toddlers’ thinking about winners and losers, bullies (欺凌者) and victims. D To find out toddlers' attitude towards winners and losers. C A walk through the galleries of Quebec’s Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) places individuals face-to-face with some 43, 000 artworks ranging from Chinese ceramics to Inuit sculpture. While the visiting is an incredible cultural experience, a group of local physicians will soon be able to prescribe (开处方) museum visits as treatment for some illnesses. “We know that art contributes to neural (神经的) activity, ” said MMFA director Nathalie Bondil. “What we see is that being in contact with art can really help your well-being. ” Hélène Boyer, vice president of a Montreal-based medical association, explains that museum visits have been shown to increase levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter (神经递质) known as the “happy chemical” which helps to lift the mood. B. They can reduce physical activity. C. They can slow down our life pace. D. They can increase levels of art appreciation. 29. How do museum visits affect people? A. Stop them concentrating on pain. B. Stop them focusing on traditional methods. C. Encourage them not to be absent-minded. D. Encourage them to slow their steps while walking. 30. What does the last paragraph suggest? A. Physical activity was popular in the 19th century. B. Sports are considered to be harmful to the body. C. Ideas of treating illnesses are changing over time. D.
