Many people experience this in their daily lives. In fact, your body parts don’t really fall asleep. Saying they fall asleep is just an expression. It describes the feeling you can get after you sleep on your arm or sit for a long time with your legs crossed. It might feel as if “pins and needles (针)” are pushing nerves against your limb. It means that your hand, foot, arm, or leg may feel thick and heavy. That’s because one or more nerves were pressed on for a long time. Throughout your body, nerves carry signals to and from your brain. Pressing down on these signal-senders can temporarily (短暂地) cut off their ability to pass along messages. It’s like standing on a running hose (水管) and stopping the water. When you take your foot off the hose, the water can run through again. But it may take a minute or two for the hose to get back into shape and let the water through. Similarly, certain ways of sitting or standing, especially for a long time, can press on a nerve enough to temporarily cut off the signals it is getting or sending. If you move your body to take the pressure off the nerve, the signal can go again. But it might take a few minutes for things to get back to normal. The strange feeling usually goes away pretty quickly. Doctors say you may be able to get feeling back faster by gently shaking the limb that fell asleep. 46.The writer starts the passage by ________. His theory was that 250 million years ago there was one giant continent (洲) . He called the giant continent “Pangacea”. He thought Pangacea changed millions of years later. It started breaking up. The pieces of land slowly drifted (漂移) apart. They became the seven continents we know today. Wegener made many studies. He looked at world maps and thought that some continents were like puzzle pieces. They could fit together. He went to South America as well as Africa. He looked at mountains on both continents. They would match if the continents were pushed together. Wegener found similar fossils (化石) plants and animals on both continents. Alfred Wegener called his theory “continental drift”. In 1912, he told other scientists about his theory. Most thought Wegener was crazy. They didn’t believe huge pieces of land could move. Later, other scientists did more studies. They discovered that continents are actually moving all the time. Scientists know that the surface (表面) of Earth is not one piece. They think it’s broken into large pieces of hard rock called tectonic plates (地壳板块). Scientists believe there are 30 tectonic plates on Earth and the continents lie on top of them. Under Earth’s surface is the mantle. The mantle is a layer (层) of rock about 2,900 km thick. The temperature rises to 3,700℃ at the bottom of the mantle. The heat causes the mantle to become hot, molten (熔化的) rock which flows around. The tectonic plates float like rafts on top of the hot, molten rock but they move very slowly—only about 4 inches each year. Since continents lie on top of the tectonic plates, they also float, or move. Today, scientists know the continents are still moving. Alfred Wegener’s theory proved correct. 56.What was the name of Alfred Wegener’s theory? 57.How did Alfred Wegener think one giant continent became the seven continents? 58.What did Alfred Wegener find to prove his theory? 59.Why do scientists think continents can move? 60.What should you do if you come up with a new idea while others disagree? 【答案】56.Continental drift. 57.It started breaking up and the pieces of land slowly drifted apart. 58.He found that some continents were like puzzle pieces, mountains matched if pushed together, and similar fossils on both continents. 59.Because continents lie on tectonic plates which float on molten rock and move slowly. 60.Keep studying and proving your idea with evidence. 【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲述了阿尔弗雷德·魏格纳提出的大陆漂移理论及其证据,以及后来科学家对这一理论的验证。 56.根据文章第3段“Alfred Wegener called his theory ‘continental drift’.”可推知,魏格纳的理论名称。故填Continental drift. 57.根据文章第1段“It started breaking up. Last year, I didn’t like English. I was afraid to answer the questions because of my poor pronunciation. Besides, I was a very slow reader. I had to look up the new words in the dictionary when I read my English book. New words were bad dreams for me. I couldn’t memorize their meanings or spell them correctly. Some students even laughed at me. I felt quite sad about it. Luckily, my classmates helped me out and they gave me advice on English learning. Then I did a survey and it helps me choose the best way to learn English. I hope it can help you. _________ Experts say whether or not you can learn English well depends on your learning habits. You should connect what you need to learn with something interesting. In this way, your brain is more active and you can pay more attention to what you need to learn. Everything you learn today will become a part of you and make you better in the future. 41.How did Bob feel in the English classes last year? A.Surprised. B.Relaxed. C.Unhappy. D.Excited. 42.What percent of the students learn English by making word cards? A.50% B.37.5% C.75% D.87.5% 43.Which is the most popular way to learn English? A.By listening to tapes. C.What problems confuse you to learn English? D.Why should we learn English well? 45.In Bob’s survey, some learning methods are mentioned EXCEPT ________. A.watching English movies B.working with a group C.making English word cards D.listening to English songs B Have you ever felt like your body parts fell asleep? A.giving an example B.asking a question C.explaining an expression D.sharing a saying 47.Which of the following may make you lose the feeling of your body parts? A.①② B.①③ C.②③ D.②④ 48.The underlined word in para.3 can be replaced by ________. A.nerves B.bodies C.brains D.messages 49.What can be the best title for the text? A.How to keep healthy.
