第二节(满分25分)
One possible version:
I was wheeled into the operating room the next day.My mom was standing outside.I wanted to cry.The doctor
noticed that and asked me to take a deep breath.Gradually I fell asleep. When I woke up after the operation,I felt very
weak and my mother was sitting beside my bed. When she saw me moving, she asked me if I was still up for those burgers
and fries.I said I didn't want to have them any longer. Two days later, the pain disappeared, but a new realization dawned on
me:life is unpredictable, and no amount of avoidance can shield me from unexpected challenges.
When I finally returned home,I made a decision to change.I started joining small study groups in school, where I
met new friends with different backgrounds.I also went to the coach and asked him if he could get me on the swimming
team and help me learn. He agreed. With his assistance and my own hard training,I participated in some big
competitions.Whenever new friends asked me what led me to swim professionally,I often replied,"Appendicitis."It
took an illness for me to learn the true nature of life and how to never waste time and talents. And that experience also
taught me life's most valuable lessons come from the most unexpected places.

听力原文
Text 1
W:I have worked from home for about eight years now.
M:What did you do before?
W:I taught in a school. Now,I write something at home, and I find it interesting.I also want to try making cakes when
I'm free.
Text 2
W:Mr Lee's marketing class is so inspiring.Don't you think so?
M:Well, always the same old thing. It's hard to apply his theory to practice in modern business.
Text 3
W:Unfortunately, there's another car accident on the highway. We're going to be stuck for a while.
M:Just be patient and take it easy.Well, let's put on some music.
Text 4
W:Excuse me,do you know how to use this?
M:Yeah,I'll show you.First, you have to put the correct amount of coffee in here.Next, you put this here and turn it
until it's quite tight. After that, you just press this button.
W:OK,that seems clear.I will try.
Text 5
W:Do you have any experience in doing this kind of work,Mr Smith?
M:I'm afraid not,but I've always been interested in it.And I have a lot of other experience,as you can see from my
paper certificate.
Text 6
M:Hi,Mary. This is Mark speaking.I'm going for a walk along the beach with my friends later in the afternoon.Would
you like to come?
W:Thank you for asking me,but I don't like the beach at all.
M:Why not?Is it because you don't want the sand to get in your shoes or something?
W:No.I actually don't mind the sand.I'm just scared of the sea.My brother nearly drowned last year during the summer
holiday.
M:Oh no!That's terrifying indeed.I understand.I will see you on Monday at college then.
W:Bye.Have fun!
Text 7
W:Good morning.Can I help you?
M:Yes.I'd like to have this shirt dry-cleaned.
W:OK.Just leave it here and then you can pick it up tomorrow morning.
M:But I have to wear it this evening.Do you offer urgent service?
W:Yes.Now it's 10:00 am.It can be done in three hours.
M:That's OK.I'll pick it up as soon as you finish. So how much do I have to pay in total?
W:The normal price is $20.But you'll have to pay an extra $10 for the urgent service.
M:OK.I've already paid for it.
W:By the way,why don't you just wear another shirt if I may ask?
M:Actually, this is my only black shirt that can match my white suit.I'm going to host my company's annual meeting in
—2
the evening.
Text 8
M:Susan, have you decided on your trip?Britain or America?
W:Yes,my mother and kids want to go to Canada. But,David,I'm kind of worried.
M:What is it?
W:You know, planes make me nervous. But John insists on flying.
M:There's nothing to be frightened of.I think your husband just wants to save time.Hundreds of planes fly across the
Atlantic every day.And how often do you hear of a crash?Once or twice a year?
W:But planes fly so high and fast that once is enough.
M:There are more road accidents per day than air crashes per year.Air transport is really safe compared with road
transport.
W:I still prefer to go by sea.Ships may not travel fast but at least you can relax.
M:It's fine if you're a good sailor, but have you ever traveled far in a rough sea?
W:No.I've only been in a boat once.I sailed down the River Thames on a sightseeing tour, but in any case I'd rather be
seasick than dead.
Text 9
W:Hello,is that Patrick Jones?
M:Yes,speaking.
W:This is Mrs Norman.I'm calling to confirm the application you sent to our company. You'd be a good fit for our team.
Can I know more about your work experience?
M:Absolutely.I studied computer technology at university. But after graduating,I changed direction.Recently,I've
been studying business and working for a bank now.
W:You applied for a sales position. How did the idea come into your mind?
M:My roommate is a salesperson in a foreign trade company. He has always talked about how to sell garden tools abroad.
Then I decided to have a try.
W:Interesting,Patrick. We're a new company and want to find young salespersons. One thing we care about is how long
you'd like to work here.
M:As I'm a young worker,it's my goal to find my way within a company in the following years.
W:Great.I'll invite you to meet our sales director next week.
M:Thank you.
Text 10
M:You are listening to the morning news. This is Steven Johnson.Sydney and the New South Wales coast have
been hit by heavy rains.Major roads, the airport, trains and buses were all thrown behind schedule as more than a
month's worth of rain fell in just one hour during the morning rush. All traffic into Sydney remains very heavy.Pittwater
Road is closed due to a car crash.Consider using Wicks Road instead.A police officer was hurt when assisting drivers in
North Ryde.A woman is believed to have broken her leg after a tree fell on her car.The roof of Town Hall Station has
fallen in,causing delays for passengers. The rain is expected to be at its heaviest from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.Today
a total of up to 200 millimeters of rain is being forecast to fall, along with damaging winds of more than 90 kilometers per

continue your journey after the storm passes.

Butterflies are sensitive to environmental changes, meaning they are important indicators of
ecosystem health, but they are in decline.New research suggests butterfly numbers can be boosted
by making small changes to road verges(边缘).
While most studies on road verges and butterflies have focused on temperate climates with
natural plants in rural areas, new research from Nanyang Technological University(NTU)examined
planted vegetation along major roads in big cities of Singapore.
Researchers surveyed 101 road verges, each at least 30 m long, located along major roads with
speed limits between 50 km/h and 70 km/h,and planted with non-native bushes.They found
verges with a mixture of different flowering plant species directly increased the total number of
butterflies and butterfly species."A greater diversity of flowering plants can offer a variety of nectar
(sources for butterflies. This can attract more species of butterflies, especially those that
prefer a broad range of nectar from different flowers,"explains Associate Professor Eleanor Slade
from NTU's Asian School of the Environment.
Selective thinning and less frequent cutting also benefited butterfly numbers and species
diversity, with the verges seen as paths linking the insects to other green spaces.Slade says this
could be because a greater variety of plant heights within road verges creates different micro-climatic
conditions-variations in temperature,humidity()and light intensity-that appeal to different
butterflies.More uniform plant heights created by frequently cutting verge plants can reduce the
population of the butterflies and species richness and offer less protection.
The study also showed busy roads negatively affect butterflies and butterfly species,
particularly when traffic density()is higher;this typically occurs when road speed limits are
higher, and vehicles travel faster.Roads with more traffic also have greater vehicle pollution,
which can affect both plants and butterflies.
But the researchers say the benefits of road verges could cancel out these effects if traffic
speeds are proper. They found that for roads with speed limits of up to 70 km/h,the bad effects of
traffic on butterflies could be reduced by increasing the variety of flowering plants on road verges
and allowing them to grow to varying heights.

Sprinting()involves short,all-out efforts-bursts of movement lasting anywhere from 15
seconds to a minute, followed by periods of rest or active recovery. This style of training has been
shown to improve VO,Max-the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise.
36 Boosting your VO2 Max through sprinting can also make other workouts feel easier.
37 In a 2016 study, women who performed just four minutes of sprint intervals per week
for 12 weeks achieved greater VO Max gains than men following the same plan."We've seen that
more women respond favorably to this type of training,"Hirsch,an expert in sports, says.
Sprinting can also support overall heart health and reduce cardiovascular(心血管的)risk
factors, such as blood pressure.38 While sprinting, you apply high rates of force to the
ground, stimulating fast-twitch muscle fibers."As we age,we tend to lose those fibers in both size
and volume,which is a problem,says Hirsch.39
It's also one of the few cardio workouts that support bone density. You won't get the same
benefits from cycling.A 2023 study even found that short-distance runners had better bone mineral
density than long-distance runners.
The most surprising benefit?40 "We've seen VO2 Max and muscle health benefits with
just two sessions a week,"says Hirsch."It's one of the most cost-effective options."
A.You don't need to do much of it.
B.But the benefits of sprinting go beyond that.
C.It is considered one of the best markers of cardiovascular fitness.
D.Sprinting helps preserve them, which can be beneficial later in life.
E.It is proved that sprinting can actually contribute to burning off more calories.
F.You should practice it two to three times a week to achieve the maximum effect.
G.Some research suggests sprinting may be especially effective for women's health.

As far as I was concerned, life experiences that taught me a lesson were not my cup of tea.I
had never concerned myself with going out to strange places or meeting new people and learning
about their cultures. That was how I spent my life till that day when something completely
unexpected occurred. And I never thought that I needed to make a change.
I was in high school and as expected,I was miles away from social activities and organized
sports.I had some interest in swimming and I could have done well, but I was shy and did not
consider it a rewarding experience within my comfort zone though the coach asked me to try
swimming many times.
Before that experience,I always thought that I was as strong as an ox().Be it summer or
winter,I could tolerate anything. One day I returned from school and felt a pain in my stomach.I
drank plenty of water and even took some medicine to relieve the pain, but none of these worked.
Therefore,my mother decided to drive me to hospital. When we reached the hospital,I was silently
crying with pain. After I got out of our car and sat down in the wheelchair,I was feeling like a
long-time patient.I had a feeling that something was going to happen.
A doctor came and she asked me to point with my finger at where it hurt.I did and she
touched the place and then asked the nurse for scans.Later,it turned out to be appendicitis
)I could not believe it.I was strong and could ward off any disease with a smile. How could
that happen to me?I felt helpless and weak and that was most disturbing for me.
Till the operation,I was only getting fluids().I asked the nurse when I would be able to
eat burgers and fries. She smiled and promised me that it wouldn't take long.
