①Have you read Harry Potter? Fans of the Harry Potter books will know Quidditch, the magical sport where players fly around on broomsticks (扫帚柄). But do you know that the game is in the real world, too?
②It’s called quadball, and it first began back in 2005, when American college students decided to create their own, real-life version (版本) of Quidditch. More and more people started playing the game, with countries all over the world making their own teams.
③The rule of quadball is very similar to that of Quidditch. Although players don’t fly in the sky on broomsticks like in the books, they must play with a “broomstick”—usually a wooden pole (木杆)—between their legs at all times.
④And like Quidditch, there are four types of players on a quadball team. Thc Chasers try to score goals by throwing volleyballs through the opposite team’s hoops (篮筐), and the Keepers try to stop goals from being scored. The Beaters throw dodgeballs (躲避球) at other players. If a player is hit, he has to drop any ball he is carrying and runs back to his own hoop. And the Seeker, which was the position that Harry Potter played in the books, has to find the Snitch. In the books, the Snitch was a small, gold ball that flew around the pitch (球场). But in quadball, the Snitch is a person—the Flag Runner, a fair player who runs around the pitch with a flag tied to his back. If a Seeker catches the Flag Runner’s flag, his team gets 30 points and the game ends.
⑤Quadball is an exciting sport to watch and even more exciting to play. In 2012, the world’s first Quadbail World Cup was held.
29. How does the writer lead into the topic of “quadball”?
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By raising problems.
30. Which paragraph shows the development of quadball?
A. Paragraph 1. B. Paragraph2. C. Paragraph3. D. Paragraph 4.
31. What can be learned about quadball from Paragraph 4?
A. The Secker must fly around in the sky on broomsticks.
B. The Beaters can only throw dodgeballs at the Keepers.
C. The Flag Runner should run around the pitch with a flag.
D. The Chasers need to throw basketballs through the hoops.
32. Who will most probably be interested in this passage?
A. Technology fans. B. History researchers.
C. Book sellers. D. Sports lovers.

Believe it or not, my friends often come first in my heart because I want to make them happy. If anyone asks me for help, I always say, “Yes!” “Can you help me with English practice?” Grace asked me on the first day after she became my deskmate. “Of course,” I answered without hesitation. Grace has been working really hard on her studies and she needed my help though I didn’t have much time left for her.
One day after school, while I was doing lots of homework, Grace’s phone call came. She complained (抱怨) a lot and it made me feel bored, but I still felt bad about saying no. When Grace ended the call, it was 0:15 a.m. I still had homework left but I wanted to sleep. This was bad for a junior high school student in Grade Eight who is going to take an important exam later.
Finally I began to cry. I felt so tired and realized that the stress (压力) had an effect (影响) on my health. I tried to get myself out. Studying is more important than other things, so Grace has to come the second. It’s now important for me to say no, no, no.
“Can you give me a hand?” Grace asked. “Sorry… I just have to go over (复习) my maths notes,” I answered. “All right. It’s up to you,” she said. I felt completely relaxed when I heard her reply. Anyway, it’s not so hard to say no at all.
To be honest, I have felt much happier since learning to say no. I have more time to spend on my study at present. I still try my best to help others, but sometimes I say no because I know everyone has a limit.
33. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “hesitation” in Paragraph 1 in Chinese?

B. They often stayed up too late.
C. The writer felt completely relaxed after he said no to Grace.
D. They shouldn’t help each other.
36. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. To spend more time on study. B. Helping friends is not so important.
C. How to make ourselves happy. D. We should learn to refuse.
D
More and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities around the world now. Some climb the highest mountains and others travel to different parts of the world. I would think bungee jumping (蹦极) to be a good example of such an activity.
Bungee jumping is not a new activity. It appeared (出现) hundreds of years ago. The men tie (绑) long vines (藤) from plants around their ankles (踝关节). They spend days building tall towers out of vines and logs (原木). Then they jump off them. In their old story, a woman tried bungee jumping first. She decided to run away from her rude husband (丈夫). So she climbed up a tall tree and tied some vines around her feet. Her husband also climbed up the tree and tried to catch her. The woman jumped and the man followed. The vines saved her life, but her husband died.
However, bungee jumping becomes much safer nowadays. You jump from a high place 200 metres above the ground with an elastic (有弹性的) rope tied to your feet. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. It is said that over 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping.
Why do people take part in such activities as these nowadays? Some scientists think that it is because life in modern world has become safe and boring. In the past, people had to go out and hunt for food. They didn’t have a doctor if they were ill, and life was harder for them. Nowadays, people live and work safely. They buy food in shops. And there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill. Then some people take part in such activities like bungee jumping.
It is important to remember that this sport is not suitable (合适的) for everyone. And remember, if you do not want to do it yourself, you can watch other people jump.
37. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refers to (指) ________ ?
A. vines B. towers C. logs D. ankles
38. What can we learn about bungee jumping?
A. Bungee jumping is a good sport for everyone nowadays.
B. People can jump as high as they can when they try bungee jumping.
C. The longer the elastic rope is, the safer people will be in bungee jumping.
D. People won’t hit the ground with the help of the elastic rope in bungee jumping.
39. Why do people take part in bungee jumping nowadays?
A. Because they live and work safely. B. Because they think life is exciting.
C. Because they worry about being ill. D. Because they feel bored with life.
40. What is the main purpose (目的) of the passage?
A. To tell an old story of bungee jumping.
B. To let people know about bungee jumping.
C. To ask more people to try bungee jumping.
D. To tell why people take part in bungee jumping.

Simple songs play an important role in kids’ life. They can change a kid’s life forever. Think about it, you may still remember some songs from when you were little. The same thing happens today. Songs can help kids learn faster and remember new things better in daily life.
Music and speaking both have rhythms. When kids sing, they can feel the rhythms. In talking, we use stops and stress on syllables or words to show feelings and important points. Songs and rhymes can help us remember different kinds of things. Music goes to many parts of the brain, and gets stored (储存) in different memory (记忆) places. When kids store memories in more places, they can remember things better.
Kids learn languages faster by singing than by listening to long talks. Singing helps kids learn new words and expressions quickly. If your kid is young, singing is a good way to teach him new words and expressions. Singing more times helps turn what they learn into long-term (长期的) memory. Small differences in spoken language can influence (影响) young kids’ reading. Consonants such as “b” and “p” are hard for kids to tell apart on paper, but they can learn from songs. This can help them know the difference when reading.
Also, songs can improve (提高) kids’ creativity. When kids listen to songs, they often imagine different pictures and stories in their minds, which helps with their creative thinking. What’s more, singing songs together with friends or family can make kids more confident (自信的) and help them have better social skills.

B. The Beaters can only throw dodgeballs at the Keepers.
C. The Flag Runner should run around the pitch with a flag.
D. The Chasers need to throw basketballs through the hoops.

A. vines B. towers C. logs D. ankles

A. To tell an old story of bungee jumping.
