Dear Chris,
I am glad to learn that you will visit our school for a one-week exchange and deliver a lecture on
western art.It is nice of you to ask us for advice on the lecture.
Being a music fan,I wonder if you could give us a lecture on music.I am crazy about traditional
Chinese music. Not only does it keep me relaxed, but it brings me pleasure. In addition to that,I am
curious about western music, such as classical, jazz and rock music.Could you show us some great
musical works and tell us how to appreciate them?
I hope I can benefit a lot from your lecture and have a better understanding of the differences between
Chinese and western music.
Thank you for your time.
Yours,
Li Jin

If you are applying to universities overseas, you can't avoid having a video interview, whether you like it or not. Here are some steps to follow when preparing for the perfect video interview.
Step 1: Start with the basics
Before your interview, find out what platform or application the school uses for video interviews, and make sure that you know how to operate it.
You need to set up a clear and focused interview environment. You also need a strong internet connection.

A professor I have worked pretty closely with has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. It has been heartbreaking for us.
What made him extraordinary was not only that he was a rising star. He had only recently collected the highest honors for young researchers at the White House. We truly admired him ——as someone put it,“He always has a smile and a kind word for everyone.” It is very hard to find someone who is extremely intelligent should be so nice a human being.
I decided that we needed him to know our attitude and also how we are all praying for his recovery.I bought him a simple card which read, “Healing thoughts and wishes coming your way.” I met all the students he worked closely with and got them to sign on it. Each student signed and also added a message. “We love you so much,”“Please come back,”“Thank you for being such an inspiring teacher”... These were some of the messages that were written. Most of the students were really glad we were doing this.
He is still undergoing treatments, and trying his best to stay optimistic and hopeful I didn't see a sign of self-pity or sadness when I met him last week. Instead, he paid attention to every word of my presentation and asked me several questions related to my work. I was amazed at how much he gave his100% on that day in spite of being in pain because of chemotherapy(化疗). He did not know if he even had another month to live. “I hope to be back this summer,” he said,
Needless to say, I saw an expression of joy and hope on his face as he opened the card. He said he was truly touched to see the messages from the students he worked with:
There is one thing I learned from last week: It is so important to tell people how much they mean to us and what inspiration they are before it becomes too late. My professor, in spite of being too sick to teach classes, has managed to continue being a great teacher, introducing his last valuable message to us.

In the past few decades, great progress has been made in the field of space exploration, which has enabled mankind to have a deeper understanding of the solar system, our place in it and in the universe.“We sent probes(探测仪) to every planet in the solar system . This is by far the best one.” said Clayton, vice president of Blue Origin. “Let’ s focus right now on protecting the Earth environment, and then we’ ll go from here. Space science and technology should be people-cent-ria and application-cent ria, and focus on improving human life. We need to have a strong footing(立足点) on the Earth, learn to solve the day-to-day problems of the society.”
“Space technology can help achieve the 17 sustainable development goals to be achieved by 2030set by the United Nations. Satellite monitoring can really help with agriculture.” said Victoria, CEO of a company working on sustainable development. “Through Global Navigation Satellite System, animals’ movement information recorded on self-recharging devices can be transmitted(传输) to the company’ s server. Farmers can be alerted in real time if anomalies(反常现象) are detected. We can use it to ensure the traceability of the entire meat chain. As a result. it enables consumers to know that the beef they are eating does not come from protected areas or the cattle don't contribute to deforestation.”
As early as 2007, Michael Griffin, former Administrator of NASA, put forward the concept of the“space economy” in a speech. He is very optimistic about the market prospect of commercial space and said, “According to the latest data, the global space industry could reach $1 trillion in 2040, up from$378 billion currently. I believe more business models and space activities will be created in the future to achieve the economic scale of$1 trillion.”
As an entrepreneur(创业者) herself, “' pictorial thinks the thriving space market will bring countless opportunities for entrepreneurs. She mentioned future settlements on Mars or on the Moon. “If we are going to develop a new society outside the Earth, we will need all types of applications and all types of startups. . When people have positive feelings for one another then they are able to sit down and talk about what really matters, that is, the true purpose and meaning of life. When envy and jealousy. flee. truth has a rich soil to grow and ripen.
-In order to really talk, people have to be willing to admit their weakness, and open up. But if there is anger, envy, jealousy or feelings of superiority, truth cannot exist because everyone is measuring what they are saying, trying to avoid making themselves vulnerable (脆弱的) in any way.
. Perhaps the biggest truth-killers of all are envy and jealousy. Envy is desiring what someone else has, while jealousy is feeling unhappy that someone has something that you would like.
The objects of envy and jealousy can be material possessions such as jewelry and houses, and other intangibles such as popularity and respect.
Most of us hold back when we think about being envious or jealous. But do we really understand how these feelings express themselves? It`s not always so obvious — unless we slow down and examine ourselves, we may miss the signs.
We think to ourselves: That person who just won that award/ contract/ position doesn't deserve it.She thinks her child's so great but he's not very good and is really a mediocre guy. Who does he think he is — he doesn't know anything about that subject.
We may not in truth want what the other person has, but we don't want them to have it either. This is what we call“Dead-end Envy”. It's the feeling of dissatisfaction that occurs when someone else owns/ achieves something and you aren't happy about it. If you turn-envy or“Dead-end Envy” inside out,you get schadenfreude(幸灾乐祸), taking pleasure in someone else's misfortune. In an earlier study,“neural correlates(神经关联) of envy and schadenfreude were tied together, with the magnitude (量级)of one predicting the strength of the other,” says researcher Matthew D. Lieberman who specializes in respect and how people get along.
Can envy ever be positive? In terms of motivating people to push themselves to succeed—yes. But in terms of personal relationships? That's harder to prove a positive. Once you accept that someone is your superior in one aspect or another, or has been blessed with a unique talent or quality, and they become a role model, envy may turn into something else, respect.
66. The author intends to tell us that when people talk with others, .
A. envy and jealousy are unavoidable B. people don't need to be open up
C. people should measure what they are saying D. positive feelings help talk deeply.
67. About envy and jealousy, the author thinks that .
A. there is no difference between them B. most people are willing to accept them
C. they have a bad influence on truth D. they are easy to understand and recognize
68. What does the underlined word“mediocre” mean?
A. Ordinary. B. Useless. C. Outstanding. D. Unique.
69. What can we conclude from Paragraph 7?
A. Envy is the opposite of schadenfreude. B. “Dead-end Envy” can lead to schadenfreude.
C. People with envy or jealousy have no sympathy. D. People always want what others have.
70. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Envy and Jealousy, the Power of Success
B. The Harmfulness of Envy and Jealousy
C. How to Overcome Envy and Jealousy Successfully
D. Envy and Jealousy and Their Effects

阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Before entering college,I had heard so many stories about how stressful freshman year could get and that this would potentially be the most difficult experience I would ever have to go through. And yes,for the most part, those stories did live up to the reality.
In the first several months,I was urged to improve my social skills and to befriend people.Personally, there was a clear struggle on wanting to adjust and not simply adapt. Adapting required a change in behavior for the sake of fitting in and I didn't want that. Luckily and eventually,I was able to find my own group. It just required extra work and patience.
Naturally, there were academic obstacles that arose. The biggest one was my major. I was enrolled as a communication studies major. I chose it because it seemed like a safe haven(避风港). But I later discovered that it didn't actually fit my likes. After two quarters, serious thinking and several mini breakdowns, I switched to philosophy.
Ever since I was younger, I have known I wanted to work in the field. It has always intrigued me.To be honest, I’ve never had to read such challenging texts in my life, but I enjoy it. It pushes me beyond my limits in a good way. It introduces me to concepts and theories that I’ve never heard of. More importantly, it doesn't only make me more logical. It also makes me more empathetic(有移情作用的)and understanding of others.
I eventually overcame the obstacles. As I recall it now,I'm thankful that the good always outweighed the bad. The good came in the form of new friends, significant learning and deepened self-understanding. As I head off to sophomore year,I plan to bring this good with me.
