Quickly finishing their dinner, the pair went upstairs and started planning. Maria and Peter decided to take advantage of the Internet. “Maybe we can write an article to arouse people's awareness.” Maria proposed. “Good idea! We can also make a video!" Peter added. The next few hours witnessed their heated discussion and growing confidence in a clean and beautiful coast. The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately. Countless comments flooded in saying how heartbroken they were when looking at the polluted beach and ocean. What amazed Maria and Peter more was that numerous people in their community, encouraged by their efforts, offered to join in their clean-up. More and more people came to the beach to collect plastic bags and they also appealed to others to avoid throwing or using plastic bags. A year later, with their joint and continuous effort, the coast regained its beauty and Maria and Peter regained their long-awaited pleasure.

My wife and I have gardened together for years, but the great birch tree (桦树) challenge of 2024 put our teamwork to the test.
We’d agreed to replace two birch trees we’d lost and buy trees small enough for me to manage. Yet, at the garden center, my wife’s attention was drawn to a towering 15-foot birch with a root ball the size of a big exercise ball. When I asked an employee about its weight, he estimated, “About 400 pounds.” I tried to make sure my wife could hear so I raised my voice on purpose, “So, you’d need to be a sportsman to move that, right?” She nodded. Game over, I thought.
“Call Brian,” my wife said, referring to our strong firefighter son-in-law. The next morning, Brian arrived with 800 pounds of birch trees in his truck. After much pushing and struggling, we managed to get them off the truck, but they went no further than the driveway. Brian left for some reason, and the trees remained where they’d landed.
That night, it sprang to my mind that we’d been asking the wrong question. Instead of “How do we move a 400-pound tree?” we should be asking, “How can we make the tree lighter?” With that shift in mind, I got out of bed and removed the 300-pound pile of earth, dirt and rocks from each root ball, making them much easier to handle. Two months later, the two trees are tall and solid, already casting shadows. To me, they are more than just trees—they are reminders of the times I limit myself by sticking to the usual methods. I am grateful for having a partner who pushes me to look up and change the way I think about things.
24.How did the author probably feel at the sight of the 15-foot birch?
A.Excited. B.Concerned. C.Relieved. D.Astonished.
25.Why did the author raise his voice on purpose?
A.To prevent his wife from buying the tree.
B.To warn his wife about the tree’s poor health.
C.To show his determination to be a sportsman.
D.To express his dissatisfaction at the employee.
26.What did the author do with the trees that night?
A.He threw them away.
B.He just left them in the driveway.
C.He reduced their weight before planting.
D.He asked Brian to take them home by truck.
27.What do the trees represent to the author?
A.The power of teamwork. B.A devotion to hard work.
C.A physical challenge he overcame. D.The value of thinking out of the box.

An artificial intelligence can decode (解码) words and sentences from brain activity with surprising accuracy. Using only a few seconds of brain activity data, the AI guesses what a person has heard. It lists the correct answer in its top 10 possibilities, researchers found in a primary study.
Developed by the parent company of Facebook, Meta, the AI could eventually be used to help thousands of people around the world who are unable to communicate through speech, typing or gestures.
Most existing technologies to help such patients communicate require risky brain surgeries to put in electrodes (电极). This new approach “could provide a possible path to help patients with communication problems, avoiding the use of surgeries,” says neuroscientist Jean-Rémi King, a Meta AI researcher. King and his colleagues trained a computational tool, also known as a language model, to detect words and sentences on 56,000 hours of speech recordings from 53 languages. The team applied an AI with this language model to databases from four institutions that included brain activity from 169 volunteers. In these databases, participants listened to various stories and sentences, while the people’s brains were scanned by magnetoencephalography (MEG) (脑磁图).
Then with the help of a computational method that helps account for physical differences among actual brains, the team tried to decode what participants had heard using just three seconds of brain activity data from each person. The team instructed the AI to match up the speech sounds from the story recordings with patterns of brain activity that the AI computed as corresponding to what people were hearing. It then made predictions about what the person might have been hearing during that short time, given more than 1,000 possibilities. Using MEG, the correct answer was in the AI’s top 10 guesses, the researchers found.
“The new study is the decoding of speech recognition, not production,” King agrees. “Though speech production is the final goal, for now, we're quite a long way away.”
28. Whom might the AI benefit?
A. People unable to read. B. People who are unconscious.
C. People who can't move around. D. People unable to communicate normally.
29. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. The purpose of the AI. B. The significance of the AI.
C. The advantage of the AI. D. The working principle of the AI.
30. What does the AI require to make its prediction?
A. Speech production. B. Top ten guesses.
C. Patterns of brain activity. D. Disabled volunteers.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. A New Way to Decode Speech B. The Employment of MEG Technology
C. An Advance in Artificial Intelligence D. A Solution to Communication Problems
D
Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t hop out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay put until — well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling fable is more than just a metaphor (隐喻).
Climate change is becoming one of the biggest threats to frogs and other amphibians, according to a major study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the primary reason why more than 100 amphibian species were slipping toward extinction.
The spread of disease among frogs and the destruction of their habitats have long been recognized as reasons why many amphibians are decreasing. But this new study establishes climate change as a major risk for amphibians around the world, too. The soft-skinned animals lack the fur and feathers to help adjust their temperature in this hotter and more drought-stricken world.
Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds. But losing amphibians would be disastrous because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators (捕食者). “Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the breakdown of this food web,” said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group.
Luckily, habitat protection and other conservation measures have been taken to help recover more than five dozen amphibians from Costa Rica to Malaysia. “It’s not all bad news,” said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase investment in amphibian conservation.”
32. How is the topic introduced?
A. By listing facts. B. By explaining ideas.
C. By sharing a story. D. By raising a question.
33. What is the main reason for the decrease of amphibians according to the new study?
A. The spread of disease. B. The loss of habitats.
C. The rise of temperature. D. The lack of feathers.
34. What will happen if the number of amphibians decreases?
A. The food chain will be destroyed. B. Wolves will depend more on insects.
C. Predators will be the key role of the web. D. The ecosystem will become more diverse.
35. How does Luedtke feel about the future of amphibians?
A. Critical B. Hopeful. C. Uncertain. D.Tolerant
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The path to healthy weight combines two key elements. Exercise and eating habits form its foundation. Some believe they demand lots of effort or planning. But that’s not true. In fact, the best way to work them into our lives is by making small changes that gradually become part of our routine. ___36___
Regular Exercise
Teens should get 60+ minutes of daily physical activity. ___37___ All that matters is that each week you get the right balance of activity, including dancing, brisk walking, or stair-climbing. Breaking workouts into 15-minute “exercise snacks” (e.g., morning yoga, lunchtime walks) throughout the day makes goals more achievable. This strategy avoids burnout while keeping energy steady.
Good Eating Habits
___38___ Actually, crash diets cause weight rebounds. A 2022 study found 80% of teens regained weight post-diet. Therefore, teens should eat a variety of foods, and there’s nothing wrong with the occasional treat. A candy bar somehow beats snapping daily.
To build lasting habits, reshape your mindset. ___39___ When stressed, try brief walks rather than reaching for snacks. Track weekly progress with a checklist—small achievements boost motivation strongly.
In conclusion, creatively design routines blending exercise and nutrition in your own way. ___40___ While others choose gym workouts, you might prefer playing Frisbee with your dog. Knowing what’s right for you will make it a lot easier to do!
A. You’re all different after all.
B. Independence matters in habit-building.
C. View food as fuel, not emotional comfort.
D. Low-calorie diets ensure steady weight loss.
E. Eating well doesn’t mean dieting over and over.
F. It doesn’t mean doing tough exercises or hitting the gym.
G. Here’s how to make these other healthy habits just as easy

第二节(满分25分)
Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their passion for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea from waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened?” Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.” Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other. Suddenly, an idea flashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes, that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus (异口同声).

Let's begin with the upper classes. In Victorian times, the upper classes made up blessed than three percent of the population, yet held more than ninety percent of the country's wealth. Most of their servants were very poorly paid, but we're always living in the homes of upper class Victorian families. So they didn't have to pay for housing, food and clothing. The money which they did turn they sent to their families. Many servants came from the countryside. Among them were cooks, cleaners, gardeners and so on. The family would also employ a child's nurse whose main role was to care for the children. SHE was responsible for teaching the children how to behave and taking care of them when they were ill. Nurses did not, however, educate the children. Generally, children from wealthy families didn't attend school outside the family home. Tutors would come to the house to do this. Now the Victorian upper classes have the reputation of being quite cruel, but this wasn't always the case. They were also quite generous. Some schools were set up with money from the upper classes so that poor children could have some form of education. Additionally, most Victorian parents were very proud of their children. This goes against the common idea that parents were very strict with their children. In fact, the opposite was generally the rule. However, the situation for lower class families was very different.
