Recently, the news that a school in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, serves premade meals to its students has sparked heated discussions across the country. People doubt if premade meals, despite being convenient, are healthy and nutritious enough for growing teenagers.
Premade meals refer to halffinished or finished dishes that are already cooked or prepared, according to the China Cuisine Association. There are several types of premade foods, including readytoeat food, such as canned food or cooked food in packages, and readytoheat or readytocook food, which requires heating or cooking before being served.
Many people tend to think that readytoheat and readytocook foods are less nutritious because they usually need to be kept in refrigerators. “Actually freezing does not cause nutrient loss,” Liu Junya, a 33yearold dietitian in Beijing, said. “Nutrient loss typically occurs during the heating or frying process.”
Vitamins from the B group and vitamin C found in meat and vegetables are heatsensitive and can be lost during the process. By being heated or cooked twice or more, “premade foods can be less nutritious than freshly prepared and cooked foods,” Liu said.
Meanwhile, “many premade food companies prioritize taste over nutrition,” said Liu. This leads to higher levels of salt and sugar in the food, which may lead to health problems, such as high blood pressure in the long term.
Additives(添加剂) are also a major concern related to premade food. In China, there are strict standards for food additives. Currently, China's food industry has welldeveloped techniques to preserve premade food without the excessive use of additives. Some food can be sterilized(消毒) and then sealed after cooking, followed by lowtemperature storage, allowing for a longer shelf life. However, it's essential that customers buy premade meals from qualified food companies or supermarkets.

It is hoped that regulations on premade meals can be strengthened to better ensure nutrition and hygiene(卫生). This way, “premade meals will be more accepted by the public,” Liu said.

A. They are rich in various vitamins.
B. They are popular among youngsters.

D. They are already partially or fully cooked.
( ) 5. According to Liu Junya, when does nutrient loss typically occur in premade foods?
A. During cooking. B. During freezing.
C. During packaging. D. During sales.
( ) 6. What is one of the key recommendations for consumers regarding premade meals?
A. Keep premade meals frozen. B. Buy from reliable sources.
C. Follow the cooking instructions. D. Pay attention to the additives used.
( ) 7. What does Liu Junya think of premade meals?
A. They are a safe choice for all.

It is generally acknowledged that young people from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds tend to do less well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called “Head Start” was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It took children into preschool institutions at the age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing, because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, “Head Start” children returned to the same disadvantaged home environment.
To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child's first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The fouryear study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different socioeconomic status, age and family structure. The program involved trained educators visiting and
