What makes you look the way you do? Why do you have curly hair while your friend has straight hair? Why do some people have big eyes and others have small ones? The answer is genes (基因).
Scientists find that many genes decide our facial features (面部特征). Some genes come from our mother, and some come from our father. That's why we often hear people say, "You look like your mom!" or "You have your dad's nose."
Let's learn about some features and genes:
• Eyes: If both your parents have double eyelids (双眼皮), you may have double eyelids or single eyelids (单眼皮). If both have single eyelids, you usually have single eyelids.
• Hair: If one of your parents has curly hair, you may have curly hair too. Straight hair often comes from genes too—if both parents have straight hair, you probably do too.
• Skin colour: If one parent has light skin and the other has dark skin, your skin colour is usually between light and dark.
• Chin (下巴): A big chin often runs in families. If one of your parents has a big chin, you may have one too.
No two people in the world look exactly the same—even twins! Their faces are very similar, but there are small differences, like a bigger nose or a smaller mouth. Genes make each of us special.
1. What decides our facial features according to the passage?
A. Our hobbies. B. Our genes. C. Our friends. D. Our food.

Jake is a 12-year-old boy from Australia. His favourite hobby is making model planes. He started this hobby when he was 8 years old.
One day, Jake saw a model plane in a shop. It was expensive, so he couldn't buy it. He thought, "Why not make one myself?" He asked his grandpa for help—his grandpa used to be a pilot (飞行员) and knew a lot about planes. His grandpa taught him how to draw plane designs (设计图) and cut wood.
At first, Jake's model planes didn't look good. Some had broken wings (翅膀), and some couldn't "fly" (he put them on a string and ran with them). But Jake didn't give up. He tried again and again. After 6 months, he made his first good model plane. It was blue and white, just like his grandpa's old plane.
Now Jake makes a new model plane every month. He uses different materials (材料): wood, paper and even old boxes. He also joins a model plane club at school. Every Saturday, he meets other students in the club. They show their model planes and talk about how to make them better.
Jake's dream is to be a real pilot one day. He says, "Making model planes teaches me to be patient. I believe if I keep trying, my dream will come true."
