Passage 5
On a cold evening in January, little Philip went upstairs and found the door closed. Outside the door of his mother’s bedroom, he stopped and listened. Although no one told him not to go in, he had a feeling that it would be wrong to do so. He was a little afraid with his heart beating fast, but at the same time, something told him to open the door. He opened it quietly and slowly. He stood for some time before going in. He was not afraid now, but he felt strange (奇怪的). Then, the little boy closed the door behind him.
▲ Looking around it, the little boy went in the room gently and slowly. On the dressing table, Philip saw Mrs. Carey’s brushes and the hand mirror. There was a photo of him and also a photo of his father on the wall. He had often been in the room when his mother was not in it, but now it seemed different. There was something different in the chairs. The bed was made just like someone would sleep in it that night.
Philip opened a large cupboard (壁柜) full of dresses and then he went in. He took as many of them as he could in his arms and put his face in them. Then he opened the drawers (抽屉) filled with his mother’s things, and looked at them. Their smell was fresh and warm. The difference of the room left it, and it seemed to him that his mother had just gone out for a walk. She would be in any minute and would come upstairs to have a small cup of tea with him. And it seemed that he felt her kiss on his face. He just couldn’t believe it! He kept telling himself it was not true that he would never see her again. Feeling hopeless, he looked around the room again. However, it was true!

话题2 人际交往与情感
Passage 1
Laughing is one of life’s simplest pleasures. It’s free. You can do it anywhere and it makes you feel good. Laughter is infectious (感染的). Often when we hear someone laughing in a crowded room or on a packed train, for example, we start laughing too — even if we have no idea why.
Making others laugh is an act of joy and kindness. However, when people laugh at you, it’s not. That experience is lonely and no fun at all. For example, if Anna is in a funny play and people laugh with her, that’s a good thing. However, if she forgets her lines, people may laugh at her. That isn’t so good. People might even call her a laughingstock (笑柄). No one, not even a professional comedian (喜剧演员), wants to be a laughingstock.
For example, let’s say a boy likes dancing with teddy bears. He records it and accidentally (偶然地) sends it to one of his classmates. The classmate shares the video with others and the boy becomes the laughingstock of the whole school.
But our story doesn’t end there. Someone posts the video online and over 10 million people watch it. Then, the boy gets lots of offers to make advertisements for teddy bears and makes a lot of money. Now, you can say the boy has the last laugh. When you have the last laugh, you end up winning.
Another way to have the last laugh is to simply laugh off a difficult situation. It shows you just don’t care. For example, if the boy is a friend of yours, you can tell him to just laugh it off.
1.Why do we possibly follow someone else to laugh on a packed train?
A.Because laughing is free.
B.Because we have no idea why.
C.Because laughing makes us feel lonely.
D.Because laughter is infectious.
2.From the second paragraph, we can learn that _________.
A.being a laughingstock is fun
B.we shouldn’t laugh
C.laughing at someone is no fun
D.making others laugh is too difficult
3.A professional comedian _________.
A.wants to be a laughingstock
B.wouldn’t like to be a laughingstock
C.likes to laugh at others
D.often forgets the lines
4.If one has the last laugh, he _________ in the end.
A.achieves success
B.is still a laughingstock
C.makes others laugh
D.doesn’t care about the results
5.If someone makes fun of your sister and you want to tell her not to pay too much attention to it, you can say, “_________”.
A.You’re really a laughingstock
B.Hey, just laugh it off.
C.It’s not funny—don’t laugh.

5.细节理解题。根据“Another way to have the last laugh is to simply laugh off a difficult situation. It shows you just don’t care. For example, if the boy is a friend of yours, you can tell him to just laugh it off.”可知,笑到最后的另一种方法是在面对困难的情况时,简单地笑出来,这表明你不在乎。因此如果有人取笑你的妹妹,而你想让她不要太在意,你可以叫她一笑置之。故选B。

Passage 3
“It’s a waste (浪费) of time,” I said when my mom told me to join Madcaps, a mothers and daughters club that helps the poor. When she told me I had to volunteer (志愿服务) at a homeless shelter (收容所), I thought that things could not get worse.
We got there late and walked to the dirty homeless shelter, where we saw a lady shouting at a man.
He talked to her and then led us to the kitchen, where we ran into our five fellow (同伴) Madcaps mothers and daughters.
Then homeless people started to walk in and a little girl, around five years old, walked up and pointed to the food I was handing out. I handed her a cold sandwich and she smiled to say thanks. She then walked over to her parents, who sat not far away.
As she walked away, I thought about how much I had. I go to one of the top schools in San Die- go, I have a great house by the water, and I have a warm meal every night. Then I thought of how little she had. She probably didn’t go to school, and that is where she sleeps and eats every day. That little girl makes me understand just how fortunate I am.
After that moment, I had a change of heart. Now, I love Madcaps and don’t miss one meeting.
I have little trouble getting along with others and now I have many friends to play and talk with.
I believe that if you have an open mind about things, you can learn a lot about yourself and the people in your community. You can make new friends and understand yourself better. I believe you can make a difference just by doing something that you don’t want to do.

Passage 1
Scientists say they have had a “conversation” with a humpback whale (座头鲸). The scientists are from the University of California, the Alaska Whale Foundation and the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute 搜寻地球外文明研究所). They teamed up and spoke to a humpback whale named Twain. They spoke to her in “humpback language” for 20 minutes. Their conversation took place after the scientists sent a “contact call” into the ocean off the coast of Alaska. Twain heard the call and responded (回应). She swam to the research boat, circled it and chatted. The SETI Institute said it was the first ever communication between humans and a humpback whale.
The scientists said their conversation with Twain was not a deep one. Professor Brenda Mc Cowan said it was more like a series of greetings. Whales use contact calls to let other whales know where they are. The scientists made the same call 36 times over a 20-minute period. Each time, Twain responded by calling back. She even matched the intervals (间隔) between each call that the researchers made, which greatly surprised the scientists.
Professor Brenda Mc Cowan told the Business Insider website that this research could make it easier to talk to aliens (外星人). She said, “There are many kinds of intelligent beings on this planet. By studying them, we can better understand what aliens might be like.” Based on this research, scientists may identify calls from space and make first contact with aliens in the future.

Passage 3
Some animals can easily find their way home after a long journey. How do they make it? Scientific research shows that they are born with certain unusual abilities for direction.
A certain kind of ants, for example, can count their steps to avoid getting lost. They can go as far as 110 metres and bring food home. These ants live in the open desert, so they have nothing to guide them along the way. It’s like someone walking six kilometres through a dark forest.
Some fish have an unbelievable sense of smell. They can smell even a single drop of their home water in a large sea area. Some sea birds have a similar ability. They are able to make a smell map of their flying area.
Some animals can sense the earth’s magnetic field (磁场), while humans can’t. This magnetic field guides a certain kind of fish when they swim a long way to a place and then back. How can this kind of fish do that? It is still a mystery. Scientists have no good answers yet.
However, animals with such unusual abilities still have difficulty dealing with environmental changes caused by human activities. For example, many birds depend on stars for direction, but they get lost easily at night when city lights are kept on all night. To solve this problem, we can simply turn off some lights at night. Clearly, one small act of humans may mean a lot to animals.

Passage 1
People already knew that pigs can learn to “sit” and “come” as we order. A study shows pigs are even cleverer than we thought. They are able to play video games.
Some students at Purdue University (珀杜大学) in the USA did the study on pigs’ game skills. The students were surprised that their test pigs were able to play some games. They got four pigs, named Ebony, Hamlet, Ivory and Omelet, to play an easy game at different levels. They had to move a handle (把手) with their nose to make a cursor (光标) move to a bright blue wall on the screen (屏幕). If they were successful (成功), they got a delicious treat. Dr. Candace Coney, the leader, said, “It’s very clear that they understood what they were being asked to do.” The study is in a paper in the magazine Frontiers in Psychology.
It took a lot of efforts (努力) to do the research. The pigs spent many days playing the game. During the last 50 rounds, the pigs played the game at three different levels. If they were successful at one level, they moved to the next level. The higher the levels, the better the treats. A scientist said, “The pigs clearly understood the connection (联系) between their own action, the handle, and what was happening on the screen. It was not a snap for them.”
Dr. Coney said, “It is important to understand how pigs get information, and what they are able to learn and remember. This will help us to learn what pigs think of interacting (互动) with humans and understand what pigs think of different environments (环境).

①Having a bloody nose can make some people nervous, but in most cases, nosebleeds (流鼻血) are not serious and easy to stop. Around 60% of people will experience a bloody nose in their lifetime. Nosebleeds are most common in children from 2 to 10 years old and in adults aged 50—80.
②Common causes of nosebleeds include (包括) dry air and wounds to the nose or other parts of the head. Blowing your nose too often when you have a cold can also lead to nosebleeds. You probably already know how to stop a bloody nose right away, but it ' s important to do it properly and safely.
③Always sit up straight when your nose is bleeding, and never lie on your back. One of the biggest mistakes in first aid is that you lean (倾斜) back with a bloody nose, but the best thing to do is to lean forward. The blood needs to go somewhere, and if the person leans back or lies down, it will most likely go down his throat, possibly causing choking (窒息). And try not to put tissues (纸巾) into your nose.
④Pinching the nose properly stops or slows the bleeding. Hold the nose for at least five minutes. Do not let go to check for bleeding until at least the first five minutes are up. If you can, keep the pressure (挤压) on for longer. After five minutes, see if the bleeding has stopped. If not, pinch again, but keep it up for 10 minutes this time.

Passage 3
Winter can be a hard time for animals. The weather may be wet and cold, and food can be hard to find under the snow. But nature has given animals different ways to survive (存活). Let’s look at how animals go through this season.
Some animals get fat in the fall. They eat and eat, then their bodies can store the food quickly. So they needn’t eat more in winter. Moose (驼鹿) are such animals. They store (贮存) food in their bodies as fat. Their bodies use the stored fat as energy. Moose will also grow heavy coats of hair to keep warm as the weather becomes colder.
Other animals store fresh food for the cold days. For example, many animals spend cold days in burrows (地洞) like bears (熊). They stay inside and sleep in most of the winter. On warmer winter days, they wake up and then eat some stored food.
Unlike bears, hibernators don’t eat at all. Before winter, these animals eat and eat to get fat. When winter comes, they sleep all day and all night. Their hearts beat very slowly and their temperature goes down. In this way, they don’t use much of the fat stored in their bodies.

Passage 4
Take any long piece of paper and glue (黏合) the ends of the paper together. You have made a ring. Take a second long piece of paper, twist one of the ends through 180°, and glue the ends together. Now you have made a Mobius band.
The band is named after the German mathematician Ferdinand Mobius who found it in September 1858. It is special because it is single sided. To prove it, you can draw a line along the middle of a common ring. The line is only on one side of the paper. However, if you draw a line after you make the Mobits band, pay attention not to take the pen off the paper when drawing the line, just keep on going until you return to the starting point. Once you have finished, you will get an unbroken line which goes along both sides of the paper.
It is also kind of fun to see what happens when you cut the band. If you cut it in half along the middle of the Mobius band, you do not get two Mobius band. Instead, after you cut the band, it turns into one large twisted (扭曲的) ring. Then if you cut this ring in half along the middle of the band again, you get two connected twisted rings. As an experiment, try cutting around a Mobius band one-third of the way from the edge. What do you get? Make a collection of Mobius bands-fat ones. Mark them in fourths, fifths, sixths, and cut around them. Keep a record of your results.

Passage 5
①Can animals talk? It is true that they are not able to use words like ours, but most of them can talk in their own way.
②When the cat is happy and pleased, how does she show it? She purrs (发出呼噜声), and this is her way of saying. “I am quite happy now.” If she is unhappy, or in pain, or hungry, she mews. If she is angry, she sets up her back and moves her tail from side to side. If she is treated (对待) in a way she does not like, her tail goes straight up in the air, and she walks out of the room.
③If your dog is pleased, he puts back his ears, waves his tail, and seems to smile. If he is angry, he growls (咆哮), shows his teeth, puts up his tail and the hair along his back and neck, walks around slowly, and makes himself look very fierce (凶猛). This is the dog’s way of saying. “I am mad, I have a mind to bite you.”
④When a hen sees a dog coming near her chickens, have you not noticed how she waves her wings, raises her tail, and rushes to the dog? This is her way of saying “Be off, or I will peck (啄) you with my hard beak (喙).” If she sees a hawk, she makes a strange noise, and her chickens at once run away and hide themselves. They understand their mother to say “Quick, get out of sight, dears! There is danger near.” When she finds some nice food, she makes another kind of noise. The chickens know quite well what it means, and run at once to share the food their mother has found for them.

Passage 2
Moo Deng is a baby pygmy hippo. It is similar to a large hippo. But a pygmy hippo is much smaller. Moo Deng lives at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. She was born in July. Her name means “bouncing pig” or “pork patty”. Her cheeks are pink. Her belly jiggles as she runs around her pen (圈,栏,棚). She nibbles on people’s knees. She is also an Internet superstar. Every move she makes is closely watched—whether she’s being sprayed with water, being carried by zookeepers, or simply lying on the ground.
Why is Moo Deng so well loved? Scientists say it is because humans are designed to like cute babies. Even baby hippos! Many baby animals look a certain way. They have big eyes and large foreheads. They have small chins and chubby bodies. These things make babies look helpless. That makes people want to protect them.
Konrad Lorenz was a scientist from Austria. He was the first one to think of this idea. He talked about it in 1943. He explained that cuteness makes babies hard to ignore.
This is important for babies. They cannot live on their own. They need adults to look after them. Cuteness touches people’s hearts. When we see a cute baby, we want to cuddle (搂抱) them. We want to take care of them. This is how people feel when they see Moo Deng.
Pygmy hippos are in trouble. People hunt them, and the forests they live in are being cut down. Today, there are only about 2,000 pygmy hippos living in the wild. They might disappear forever.

D.often forgets the lines
4.If one has the last laugh, he _________ in the end.
A.achieves success
B.is still a laughingstock
C.makes others laugh
D.doesn’t care about the results
5.If someone makes fun of your sister and you want to tell her not to pay too much attention to it, you can say, “_________”.

B.Hey, just laugh it off.
C.It’s not funny—don’t laugh.
D.You have the last laugh.
Passage 2

Some people don’t think relationships are important, but how could kids learn from people they don’t like?
Do you know how I build relationships with kids? Once, I gave a test—20 questions. A student missed 18. I put a “+2” on his paper. I said to the unhappy boy, “You got two right. You didn’t miss them all. And when we do this again, won’t you do better?” He said happily, “Yes, I can do better, Mr. Walker.” You see, “-18” may make people feel terrible, but “+2” said, “I am not all bad.”
My mother always talked to her students, went on home visits, and bought small gifts for kids. After she retired (退休), some of her students came and said to her, “You know, Mrs. Walker, you made a difference to my life. You made me feel like I was somebody.”

Passage 4
There are about five thousand different kinds of ladybugs (瓢虫) in the world. They come in many different colours like blue, yellow, white, orange and black.
In many cultures, people think ladybugs can bring good luck. Most people like them because they are beautiful and not bad for people’s health. But farmers love them because they eat plant-eating insects. One ladybug can eat up to 5,000 small insects in its lifetime!
Ladybugs are colourful for a reason. Their colours tell other animals, “Eat something else! I taste terrible.”
Ladybugs are happy in many different habitats, such as forests, cities and along rivers. Ladybugs like to keep warm. When the weather turns cold, they look for a warm place to hibernate (冬眠), such as inside houses.
Here are some other facts about ladybugs:
Though most ladybugs eat small insects, a few kinds eat plants.
Ladybugs will clean themselves after a meal.
There are more than 400 kinds of ladybugs in North America.

Passage 2
⑤Avoid activities such as heavy lifting, blowing or picking your nose for a day after the nosebleed has stopped. Remember that if you can't stop the nosebleed with these methods, see a doctor immediately.
1.Who may most easily have nosebleeds?
A.A 10-month-old baby. B.A 6-year-old girl.

Still other animals can move south before winter and come back after spring. This is called migration (迁徙). In the fall, many birds fly south in large groups. In spring when the temperature goes up, they will return.
1.How many kinds of animals are mentioned in the passage?
A.2 B.3 C.4 D.5

1.The underlined “band” in Paragraph 1 refers to a________.
A.special line B.math problem C.music group D.ringed object
2.The most important feature of the Mobius band is that ________.

A. B. C. D.
4.After you cut a Mobius band along the middle of the band for the second time, you can get ________.
A.a large twisted ring B.two connected twisted rings
C.three Mobius bands D.four separate Mobius bands
5.The last paragraph is written to lead readers to ________.
A.do more experiments with Mobius bands
B.make a collection of Mobius bands

Pygmy hippos are in trouble. People hunt them, and the forests they live in are being cut down. Today, there are only about 2,000 pygmy hippos living in the wild. They might disappear forever.
