56.Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you’ll come to China. You said you wanted to learn about the customs in China. Now, let me tell you something about them.
China is a country with a long history and there are many customs in China. Now let me introduce some to you.
When you meet friends, you should greet each other and just say “hello”, instead of shaking hands frequently. When you eat at a friend’s home, you should use your right hand to hold chopsticks. It is best not to make noise when eating. It’s polite to eat all the food in your bowl. Don’t knock bowls or plates with chopsticks. This is impolite. After dinner, the host usually makes tea for the guests. When you leave, you should say goodbye to the host politely. If your friends invite you to the party, you’d better arrive a little earlier, 5 to 10 minutes in advance. You can bring a small gift to your friends. But your friends won’t open presents immediately. This is different from other foreign countries.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. If you obey these, I think you’ll have a great time in China.

Confucius (551-479 BC), one of the most important Chinese philosophers (哲学家), lived during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). After all these years, his influence is still strong in modern times.
Unlike the abstract philosophy of Laozi, Confucian ideas about right and wrong are easy to understand and apply to daily life. “It’s all about the everyday. It’s all about family,” Roger Ames, a Confucius expert at Peking University, told China Daily.
For example, many Chinese learn at an early age to “be filial to parents and respectful to brothers” (入则孝,出则悌). Confucius believed that if everyone knows how to love their families, they will know how to love others, love their country, and love the world.
“Don’t do to others what you don’t want others to do to you” is the favorite Confucius doctrine (信条) of Guo Jiulin, a professor at Dalian Minzu University. “It reminds me that if a person wants to fulfill (实现) his social ambitions (抱负), he must first be strict with himself in words and deeds,” he toldChina Daily.
Another important Confucian idea is he, or harmony (和谐). Sun Yiting, a student from Zhejiang University, values it. “It reminds me to calm down when I get angry,” she said. “It reminds me to put myself in others’ shoes. This way of thinking makes my life much happier.”
Confucian ideas can even be applied to today’s global problems, according to Ames.
“Confucius believed that the only way I can take my stand is by helping other people take theirs (己欲立而立人,己欲达而达人). If my neighbor does better, I do better. That’s the Confucian wisdom. This is really needed in the world today,” said Ames.
16.According to Confucius, ________ is of special importance.
A.the harmony of human and nature B.love for the country C.family
17.What does the underlined “This” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The understanding between people.
B.The spirit of helping one another.
C.The wisdom of being respectful to brothers.
18.What can you infer from the passage?
A.People may find it difficult to understand the philosophy of Laozi.
B.Guo Jiulin believes that those who are strict with themselves will never fail.
C.Sun Yiting values “he” a lot because she used to get angry easily.
19.Tom is a primary school student who can’t get on well with his family. Which of the following is the most helpful for him?
A.“Be filial to parents and respectful to brothers.”
B.“Don’t do to others what you don’t want others to do to you.”
C.“The only way I can take my stand is by helping other people take theirs.”
20.What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing this article?

C.To explain why Confucian wisdom still plays an important role.

Dear Jack,
It is quite rude for children or adults to bring electronic games, mobile phones, etc. to the dining table whether at home or in restaurants.
One of my worries is some adults leave their mobile phones on ringer (响铃装置) and have conversations next to me when I am trying to enjoy my meal. When people enter a restaurant, their mobile phones should be closed, on silence or on vibrating (震动). If they must answer a call they should excuse themselves from the table and go to the rest room to speak.
Children should be taught the art of conversation at a very early age when dining. They should not be allowed to interrupt (打断), but talk at the proper time. Some family-style restaurants provide coloring materials for young children to play with while they are waiting for their meals. This is a quiet activity and they can still have a conversation, too.
Some adults treat restaurants as offices and talk about business during their meals. When it bothers (打扰) others who are enjoying their meals quietly, then it should not be done.
The basic rule of having good manners is to treat others the way you like to be treated and that is with respect (尊重) and consideration.
Thank you for writing.
Yours,
Tony Black

If you spend some time in an English speaking country, you might hear the term “etiquette”. It means normal and social behavior. This may seem like a difficult word at first, but it can be very useful to understand.
Etiquette is not the same in every culture or in every situation. For example, standing very close to the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. However, if you do this in Europe, some people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China, we all know that etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes is fine, but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library, a museum or a movie theater is impolite. Even if you are with your friends, it is better to keep your voice down in public places.
If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette, we may politely give them some suggestions. One of the most polite ways is to ask someone, “Would you mind doing this?” or “Would you mind not doing that?” People don’t usually like to be criticized, so we have to be careful how we do this.
Although rules of etiquette can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world! For example, dropping litter is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask him, “Would you mind picking it up?”
51.What does the underlined word “etiquette” probably mean?
52.What’s the key sentence of Paragraph 2?
53.If your friend talks loudly in the library, what would you say to him/her?

“It reminds me that if a person wants to fulfill (实现) his social ambitions (抱负), he must first be strict with himself in words and deeds,” he told China Daily.

Dear Jack,
It is quite rude for children or adults to bring electronic games, mobile phones, etc. to the dining table whether at home or in restaurants.
Yours,
Tony Black

根据“...gives it”是person的定语从句可知此处应填一个关系词,先行词person是人,故填who/that。
根据此句是“it is+adj.+to do”结构可知此句是动词不定式作真正的主语,故填to explain。
根据“the meal is well prepared”和“Please excuse me for my poor treat”是转折关系可知,此处需填表示转折关系的连词,although/though符合语境,故填Although/Though。
根据“you should make the host believe that there is plenty to eat by admiring the food.”

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you’ll come to China.
