(predicative) Step 3 Learning about the structures Activity 3 Learning about the structures—the v-ing form used as subject (Get the students to read the grammar explanations in RB or Appendix by themselves and complete the exercises in RB in advance.) I. v-ing形式作宾语 1. 跟v-ing形式作宾语的动词 常见的有:admit承认,advise建议,allow允许,avoid避免,consider考虑,delay推迟,deny否认,dislike不喜爱,enjoy喜爱,escape逃脱,fancy想要,finish完成,forbid禁止,forgive原谅,imagine 想象,keep保持,mind介意,miss错过,permit允许,practise练习,prevent阻止,risk冒险,stop停止,suggest建议等。 e.g. He also admitted that he had enjoyed making her run around and saw it as a game. 他还承认,他喜欢让她到处乱跑,并将其视为一场游戏。 She imagined walking into the office and telling everyone what she thought of them. 她想象自己走进办公室,对每个人说出自己对他们的看法。 The moral of the story is that a wicked person cannot escape being punished. 这个故事的寓意是一个邪恶的人无法逃脱惩罚。 2. 跟v-ing形式作宾语的动词短语: 常见的有:insist on,give up,devote...to...,put off, keep on,leave off, look forward to,think of,feel like, succeed in等。 e.g. She insisted on being present at all the interviews. 她坚决要求出席所有的采访。 We offered to give Sharon a ride home, but she declined, saying that she felt like walking. 我们提出送莎伦回家,但她拒绝了,说她想走路。 3. 在以下结构中常使用v-ing形式作宾语: get down to doing sth 开始做某事 be opposed to doing sth 反对做某事 be worth doing sth 值得做某事 can’t stand/bear doing sth 不能忍受做某事 be/get used to doing sth 习惯于做某事 stop/prevent/keep...from doing sth阻止……做某事 be busy (in) doing sth 忙于做某事 have difficulty/trouble (in) doing sth做某事有困难 e.g. On our arrival, we got down to working together as planned. 我们一到就开始按计划一起工作。 I have been looking forward to seeing you. 我一直盼望见到你。 注意:有的动词后接动词-ing形式作宾语时通常带有逻辑主语。 e.g. Do you mind my/me opening the window? I want to let some fresh air in. 你介意我打开窗户吗?我想让新鲜空气进来。 4. 有些动词后既可跟动词-ing和跟动词不定式作宾语应注意的问题。 1) 有些动词后既可跟动词-ing形式作宾语, 也可跟动词不定式作宾语, 且后接以上两种形式作宾语时意义上没有什么区别。常见的有:begin, start, continue等。 e.g. I began reading / to read this novel last month and I still haven’t finished it. Everyone in the class started laughing /to laugh. Sally wanted to continue working / to work after she was married. We all love talking / to talk about ourselves. 2) 有些动词(短语)后既可跟动词-ing形式作宾语,也可跟动词不定式作宾语,但用法和意义都有所不同。常见的有:remember, forget, stop, regret, try, mean, go on等。 区别如下: remember doing sth.记得做过某事 remember to do sth. 记住去做某事 forget doing sth. 忘记做某事 forget to do sth. 忘记要做某事 stop doing sth. 停止做某事 stop to do sth. 停下来(原来的事)去做某事 try doing sth. 尝试着做某事 try to do sth. 努力做某事 mean doing sth. 意味着做某事 mean to do sth. 打算做某事 go on doing sth. 继续做同一件事 go on to do sth. (做完某事)接着做另一件事 e.g. He took a long look at the girl and finally remembered seeing her at a party somewhere. Remember to call me when you arrive! Stop shouting — you’re giving me a headache! We should stop to get a drink of water. He went on working until he was 91. Go on to do the other exercise when you’ve finished this one. II. v-ing形式作表语 1. 用来说明主语的具体内容。在这种情况下,主语和表语通常是对等关系,可互换位置。 e.g. Her job is keeping the lecture hall as clean as possible. 她的工作是尽量使报告厅保持干净。 =Keeping the lecture hall as clean as possible is her job. Her hobby is collecting stamps in her free time. 她的爱好是在业余时间集邮。 =Collecting stamps in her free time is her hobby. 2. 用来表示主语所具有的特征。这时多为v-ing形式的形容词,如:astonishing,amusing,confusing,disappointing,boring,encouraging,inspiring,moving,tiring,interesting,surprising等,这类现在分词有“令人……的”的含义。 e.g. The argument is very boring. 这个争论是很令人厌烦的。 The story he told us was very interesting. 他给我们讲的那个故事很有趣。 注意:不定式和动词-ed形式也可作表语,但不定式通常强调一次性的、具体的、将要发生的动作;动词-ed形式则表示被动、完成含义,主语常常是人。 e.g. We are to set out for the destination at four this afternoon. 我们将于今天下午四点出发前往目的地。 I am surprised at what you have said and what you have done. 我对你所说的和所做的感到惊讶。 Step 4 Using the structures Activity 4 Using the structures (exercises in the textbook) 1. Complete the sentences using the v-ing form of the words and phrases in the box. Two are extra. Then state their functions. Answers: 1) Bill’s job is teaching sign language. (predicative) 2) The theme of his presentation is breaking down barriers between groups. (predicative) 3) By bowing, we mean “bending our head or body forward as a sign of respect or shame”. (object) 4) Getting through three kilometers of heavy traffic took me almost 25 minutes. (subject) 5) We intended to visit the theme park but ended up calling on Professor Zhang. (object of the verb phrase) New word: bend vi . vt. 弯腰;(使)弯曲;屈从;拐弯 n. 拐弯处,弯道;弯曲 e.g. He bent (his head) and kissed her. 他低下头吻了她。 She bent forward to pick up the newspaper. 她弯腰去捡报纸。 The crash occurred on a sharp bend. 撞车发生在一个急转弯处。 2. Complete the passage with the correct forms of the words and phrases in the box. Reading body language is not an easy task. It can be challenging because interpreting the signs that another person shows requires considering the whole picture. In this sense, it can be compared to a doctor evaluating a patient’s condition. Considering individual differences is also key to reading people’s body language accurately. For example, when lying, some people avoid eye contact. By contrast, others may maintain eye contact even longer than usual. 3. Talk about the body language you can read from the following pictures. Use at least one -ing form for each picture. Suggested answers: 1) The man enjoys looking at himself in the mirror. 2) The woman shows her impatience by looking at her watch. 3) The boy is fearful, trying to run away from an angry dog. Activity 5 Using the structures (exercises in the workbook) Practise using v-ing form to complete the exercises in workbook. Suggested answers: Exercise 1: Body language is as important as words in communicating with other people. The crucial factor is recognising the fact that body language differs in various cultures, but it is also important to do in Rome as the Romans do”. For example, showing the gesture for “OK” can mean “money” in Japan or “zero” in France. By contrast, making such a gesture in Brazil or Germany can be offensive! Of course, some body language is shared by all cultures. For instance, waving one’s hand while seeing your friend off is like saying “Goodbye” and smiling often gets people through difficult situations. Exercise 2: looking at the ceiling; suddenly changing their mind; asking a question; gradually getting to know you; waiting for you to go on talking; stretching; feeling uncomfortable; experiencing anxiety; staring at your eyes Exercise 3: v-ing form as the subject: Swimming is my favourite activity. /Watching films can be very entertaining. v-ing form as the object: Nearly everyone enjoys eating ice cream now and then. /Mike prefers riding bikes over walking v-ing form as the predicative: Our emphasis in this class is learning body language. /Jim’s hobby is collecting stamps. v-ing form as the attribute: A little child learning to walk often falls. /The smiling waiter brought us our food. v-ing form as the adverbial: She went out shutting the door behind her./Climbing to the top of the mountain they saw a magnificent view. v-ing form as the object complement: I caught my cat climbing the curtains Bob found his dog wandering the streets after it escaped from the garden. Step 5 Evaluation and summary Activity 6 Self-evaluation Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects. 1. How is your mastery of the usage of v-ing used as object and predicative? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 2. What are your problems with practising using v-ing as object and predicative? 3. What are you going to do to consolidate the usage of v-ing used as object and predicative? Activity 7 Summary (The teacher) Summarize the usage of v-ing as object and predicative. Homework: 1. Read the grammar explanations in RB to understand the usage of v-ing as object and predicative better. 2. Complete the (grammar) exercises in RB. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
