He is a Shifu, a Chinese word meaning a master of martial arts (武术). Tokuda has reason to be proud. He has been involved with Chinese martial arts for almost forty years. After learning them at the martial arts school in New Mexico State, today he is among the most experienced kung fu teachers of the school. Practicing martial arts two to three hours and helping students improve their skills have become Tokuda’s daily routine. He expects to practice and teach martial arts for the rest of his life. “I’m still learning. It’s worth more than a lifetime to learn Chinese martial arts,” he said. “Once I started, I just couldn’t stop. I think it’s also the magic of Chinese culture.” Tokuda was sent to the martial arts school when he was 10. He still remembers how unwilling he was when starting out. “My father had always wanted to learn Chinese martial arts but he never got the chance, so he wanted his kid to learn it,” he said. “I was so afraid at that time because I thought kung fu was all about fighting.” But things changed after he learned that martial arts were more than punching and kicking. “One of the things martial arts teach me is overcoming difficulties,” Tokuda said. “As a little kid, my first lesson was like, oh, look, this is a thing that I can get through by hard work and perseverance (毅力), and that was priceless for my life.” Learning Chinese martial arts opened a gateway for him to better understand Chinese culture because he could hear a lot of ancient Chinese kung fu-related stories. He said, “I feel martial arts preserve something of ancient China that can’t be found in books. They are sort of an oral history.” Tokuda has also been invited to various events in his home state to show traditional Chinese culture, including the dragon dance and lion dance, which he also learnt at the martial arts school. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers—the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India. 2 When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was brought up on the Mesopotamian Plain—the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. 3 Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t distinguish from the European culture a lot. 4 Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like human race difference count as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference(干扰)from the other. The differences are everywhere. 5 But different cultures make the world of the 21st century more colorful. The cultural gap should not be the obstacle to the civilization of human beings. It ought to be the motivation of our going farther. A.Let us work together to keep a variety of culture. B.One important thing is to learn about other cultures. C.And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. D.At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences. E.This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole. F.They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles. G.They are obvious and affect people’s ways of thinking and their views of the world. At the age of 16, I went to Australia as an exchange student and lived with a host family. years可知,动作从过去开始,持续到现在,且对现在造成了影响,时态应用现在完成时,主语The old soldier是第三人称单数,助动词用has, donate“捐赠”的过去分词是donated。 故填as people have done for more than 3,000 years。 6.The purpose of the activity 【详解】考查名词短语。 的目的”常用短语the purpose of... The purpose of the activity。 7.The length of the Great Wall 【详解】考查名词和短语。 长度”可用短语the length of,表示“长城”可用专有名词the Great Wall。 The length of the Great Wall。 8.are He is a Shifu, a Chinese word meaning a master of martial arts (武术). 1.根据前文“The cultures of the East and the West really distinguish from each other a lot.(东方文化和西方文化确实有很大的不同)”可知,东西方文化确实有很大的差异。E 选项“This is because the culture systems are two separate systems on the whole.(这是因为文化系统总体上是两个独立的系统)”解释了为什么东西方文化差异大,因果关系紧密。故选E。 2.根据前文“Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers—the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India.(这两种文化都是由河流发展起来的——中国的黄河和印度的印度河)”可知,中国和印度文化由黄河和印度河孕育,F选项“They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system.(以语言系统为例。 5.根据前文“The differences are everywhere.(差异无处不在)”可知,本句应进一步论述文化差异的影响,G选项“They are obvious and affect people’s ways of thinking and their views of the world. At the age of 16, I went to Australia as an exchange student and lived with a host family.
