Dear Victor,
I have received your loving letter from school and I am glad to know that you are becoming responsible (有责任的) enough to decide on your career.
You are now in the final year of high school and are going to start further education in college. You know that we belong to different times, and my social life is different from yours. However, all I can say as advice is that you must choose a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. You must get a job which not only provides you with something useful, but also you are pleased with. Then, you must read a lot in the field you are aiming at. Also, you should get to know the men and women who work in that field. When mind and heart work together, success is inevitable.
No career is more or less important. I think your interest may be in the field of making TV programmes. Your good communication skills, your taking an active part in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all lead you to that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV Film Production will bring luck to you. If you succeed in that field, you will become famous and rich.
Think a thousand times before making any final decision about your career. After all, we want you to be a man of success.
We all know that you are old enough to think for yourself. With all the best wishes!

Unit 2单元话题
The world around us is full of colors. Green is the color of nature. Yellow is the color of the sun. Red is the color of blood and fire. Black is the color of the night. In the dark we cannot see what is around us, so we are sometimes afraid of the unknown and do not like black as a color. What a pity it will be if someone can not see all the colors!
There are people who are blind to certain colors. Human color blindness is hard to explain. In a single eye, there are millions of very small things called “cones (视锥细胞)”. They help us to see in bright light and to tell the difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but they are used for seeing when it is nearly dark. They show us the shape but not the color.
Do color blind people see the world in black and white? Color blindness doesn’t usually mean that people see the world like an old movie. They usually can’t tell certain colors from each other, especially green and red. Another commonly confused (弄混的) pair of colors is yellow and blue. There are different levels of color blindness. Some people are only colorblind in low light. However, in the most serious form of color blindness, everything is gray.
As for some birds, some of their eyes have few or no cones, so they can not see colors. Cats and dogs cannot see colors as well as we can. But some insects can even see X-rays. Scientists know that there are other colors around us which insects can see, but which we can not see.
1.How do rods help us?
A.They help us see in bright light. B.They help us see the colors during the day.
C.They help us tell the difference between colors. D.They help us see the shape but not the color.
2.What can we know about the color blind people?
A.None of them see colors in darkness. B.They see the world in black and white.
C.They may have different levels of color blindness. D.All of them can’t tell green and blue from each other.
3.Which animals can see more colors than us from the text?
A.Birds. B.Insects. C.Cats. D.Dogs.
4.What is the structure of the text? (P= Paragraph)
A. B. C. D.
5.What is the best title for the text?

What do comic book villains have in common? They harm others or break the law to get what they want. Another thing is that they often wear costumes in green and purple colors, and some even have green or purple skin. But why do they wear these colors? Let’s find out.
First, let’s look at culture and history. In Shakespeare’s play Othello, a character warns another about envy and calls it a “green-eyed monster”. This is where the saying “green with envy” comes from. However, even before this play, people connected the color green with negative (消极的) feelings like greed. The ancient Greeks believed that when a person was sick, their skin might turn green because of too much bile (胆汁). Over time, green has come to stand for greed, sickness, envy, and ambition—feelings that are often found in villains.
But what about purple? The color purple is often connected with power. It is not a color that we see a lot in nature, and in ancient times, purple dye (染料) was very hard to make. This made it rare and expensive, so only the most powerful people could afford it. In ancient Rome, only leaders could wear clothes in purple, and in England, Queen Elizabeth I allowed only close relatives to wear purple. So, when a villain is shown wearing purple, it suggests they are powerful or think of themselves as powerful. It also shows that they want respect from others.
Now, let’s look at color theory (理论). When the three primary colors ( red, yellow, and blue) are mixed together, they create white light. If you mix any two primary colors, you get one of the three secondary colors: orange, purple, or green. Most superheroes wear at least one primary color, and some have all three. If heroes wear bright primary colors, comic artists often use secondary colors like green and purple for villains. This way, even if you don’t know the story or the characters, you can quickly tell the heroes and villains apart just from their colors.
1.What does the underlined word “villains” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Main characters in stories. B.Writers of comic books.
C.Characters who harm others. D.Superheroes in the stories.
2.Who is allowed to wear purple clothes in old times?
A.Villains. B.Rulers. C.Superheroes. D.Artists.
3.How does the writer organize his ideas?
A.In time order. B.In space order.
C.From specific to general. D.From general to specific.
4.According to the colour theory, what colour should we use for Superman?
A.Orange. B.Purple. C.Green. D.Red.

We live in the world full of colours. Does a colour have weight? If you say “no”, you are wrong. If you don’t believe, you may do an experiment.
First, put two objects (物品) with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Third, wrap one box with a red piece of paper, and the other with a white piece of paper. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why? A scientist found that different colours have different weight in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he found that every colour has its own weight in our mind and their order is the same. The heaviest colour is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white.
The scientist told us that colours also have smell. Can you smell the colour? Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so? That is because every colour stands for a kind of light with a certain wavelength (波长), and it reaches our brain (脑) through sense organs (器官).
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colours they like, and refuse the colours they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colours you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. For example, if you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there for only an hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change with different colours.
1.The first three paragraphs tell us that ________.
A.the two boxes have the same weight
B.colours can change the weight of an object
C.the red paper is heavier than the white paper
D.different colours have different weight in people’s mind
2.The underlined word “wrap” in para 2 means ________.
A.拆开 B.包裹 C.吸住 D.称重
3.Why did the scientist think that colours have smell?
A.Because we can smell colours with our nose.
B.Because every colour has its own sweet smell.
C.Because people can sense the light of colours.
D.Because every colour can give off light of the same length.
4.Which of the following is NOT True according to the passage?
A.People may get ill if they refuse the colours they don’t like.
B.People can stay longer in blue rooms than in red rooms.
C.In people’s mind, red colour is heavier than white colour.
D.People’s body temperature will change with different colours.

That is because every colour stands for a kind of light with a certain wavelength (波长), and it reaches our brain (脑) through sense organs (器官).”可知,科学家认为颜色有气味是因为每种颜色都代表一种具有特定波长的光,它通过感觉器官到达我们的大脑,即因为人们能感觉到颜色的光芒。故选C。
4.细节理解题。根据最后一段“So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colours you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill.”可知,使用喜欢的颜色身心都会健康,否则会紧张甚至生病。故选A。

Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents. However, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap.
Don’t argue with your parents. Your parents probably won’t consider (考虑) your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but he only drove it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) for them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your opinions. Tell your parents what you care about and why. Understanding your opinions might help them see your purposes (目的) in life.

In today’s society, many young people worry about how they look, which leads to feelings of anxiety (焦虑).
In Japan, people are usually shyer and quieter than people in Western countries. This can make students less confident and stop them from showing who they are. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, masks became a daily part of life. Even after the pandemic, many Japanese students still wore masks because they felt nervous about showing their faces.
In Sweden, many students worry about how they look, and social media (社交媒体) is a big reason. The pictures students see online often show people who look perfect, and this makes them feel like they need to look the same. This problem gets worse because of apps like Photoshop, which make people look even more perfect. Students compare themselves with these pictures and feel anxious.
In Mexico, students feel nervous about their looks, too. Ana, a 14-year-old, has seen some classmates get anxious when they get pimples (青春痘) and others talk about makeup tips and share cosmetics (化妆品) in the restroom. These worries are common among teenagers as their bodies change and grow. She thinks things like social pressure from friends, bullying (霸凌), and seeing pop stars influence these feelings. She says that overcoming these worries helps teenagers better understand and accept themselves. She also encourages everyone to focus on what they’re good at and remember that it’s okay to look different because nobody is perfect.
However, things get better in Singapore. Huang Luofei, a 13-year-old, noticed that not many people at her school worry about how they look. She believes this is because Singapore is a multicultural (多元文化的) country with many different ideas of beauty and style. People there care more about personality than appearance, and schools let students truly be themselves.
Do students in your country worry about how they look? What makes them feel this way? What do you think about it? Anyway, it’s important for you to remember that everyone is different and everyone can be beautiful in their own way.

A.The magical eyes B.The colorful world
C.Different kinds of animals D.World through color blindness
5.The passage is probably ________.
A.a short novel B.a news report C.a science report D.an advertisement

It is very important for better teenagers to have one good friend or a group of friends.
