Sunshine Middle School is now having a Space Week. The Class One Grade Nine students are doing a project named “ living in outer space”. 一、基础性作业 1. Daniel and his group members are talking about life in outer space. Fill in the blanks with the help of pictures or words. Sandy: It’s said that you’ve been interested in living in outer space these days. Is that true, Daniel? Daniel: Yes. I’ve read many books about it. Amy: Do you want to travel to space one day? Daniel: Yes. I am really looking forward to that. Simon: What would you take if you travel to another planet? Daniel: I’d take a pair of because of the low . Besides, I’d take a . Sandy: If I travel to outer space, I would take some d food because there’s no fresh or . Daniel: I’ve found out an article about life in space. Some people believe by the year 2100, could live on Mars. With the (develop) of technology, the journey to Mars might only take about 20 minutes in spacecraft that travel (以光速). By then, a large number of (乘客) can travel there by spacecraft. Sandy: But the journey might be very (comfortable). As the earth is becoming more and more and , I am afraid that we would have to find another planet to live on. Daniel: (compare) to Earth, Mars might be a little better, (special) in environment. Simon, Do you in (agree) that we might live on Mars one day? Simon: It’s hard to say. life on Mars might be hard and (challenge), more and more people would think about moving there. Amy: The world is changing so (rapid) and there would be more (possible) waiting for us. Sandy: I quite agree. I really wonder what the world would be like in 100 years. Daniel: Me too. 2. Is there any life on Mars? Daniel has found a news report about this question. But some words are missing. Read and complete it. The question whether there is life on Mars has made the public think a lot for more than a century. The closest picture which was sent back by the c 1 showed Mars to be a dusty, cold world, covered by air too thin to b 2 . A British spaceship and Europe's Mars spaceship plan to l 3 on Mars or enter the orbit around it.One of the NASA's(美国宇航局)spaceships is e 4 to land on January 3rd, the other is going to land on the opposite side of Mars on January 24th. Since 1960, over twenty spaceships which were sent to Mars have f 5 .Most have been lost on flying up or landing because those are the most difficult times of any flights. Scientists wanted to find out whether there was water on Mars . In October, a team of scientists reported that Mars had been a d 6 wasteland. But weeks later, a second team reported d 7 that they had found some marks showed clearly that they were made by the rivers.Such m 8 told us that Mars was a warmer place billions of years ago, - just as life first appeared here on Earth.Scientists at once r 9 a question:if what they said is t 10 , what happened on Mars? Then what about the Earth? 3. Alice, Daniel’s classmate, has written an article about her opinions and questions about living on another planet. But some information is missing. Let’s help her complete it. Since Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon surface, people have been more and more interested in outer space. I still remember I took my first flight ( 在 我 十 岁 时 ). I felt so excited (因为速度很快) that I fell in love with flying in the air at once. When I got older, I was told that (没有了重力), everything will float in the air. How amazing! Since then, I have read a lot of books about flying in space. I have been aware (地球和月球的距离). When I think (糟糕的气候和环境问题) on the earth, I am a little worried about our future. I start to wonder (是否搬离地球). Over these years, people have known more about Mars and they have found Mars is a planet ( 拥有和地球相似的环境) but its gravity is only three-eighths of that on earth. That means if we move there one day, we would see (穿特制靴子的人们). Besides, there is no Oxygen on Mars, people would have to wear air tanks if they live there. Though I know (地球生活和太空生活有别), I am still looking forward to moving to Mars and I am sure all these problems will be solved if we never give up. 二、拓展性作业 1. Mr Wu has recommend students a documentary about the exploration of Mars. Watch this documentary and take some important notes. 2. Daniel is now working on a report about life on Mars. Daniel has read a new report by chance recently. But he has difficulty finding out the answers to the questions. Let’s read the article and help Daniel together. The plan: turn Mars into a blue world with streams and green fields, and then fill it with creatures from the earth. Are you in agreement that this idea may sound like something from a science fiction, but it is actually being taken seriously by many researchers. This suggests the future for the "red planet" will be the main topic for discussion at an international conference hosted by NASA this Week. Leading researchers as well as science fiction writers will attend the event. It comes as NASA( 美 国 宇 航 局 ) is preparing a multi-billion-dollar Mars research programme. "Turning Mars into a little earth has long been a topic in science fiction," said Dr. Michael Meyer, NASA's senior scientist. "Now, with scientists exploring the reality, we can ask what are the real possibilities of changing Mars." Most scientists agree that Mars would be possible to turn into a little earth, although much time and money would be needed to achieve this goal. But many experts are shocked by the idea. "We are destroying our own world at an unbelievable speed, and now we are thinking that we could ruin another planet," said Paul Murdin from the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, UK. Over the past months, scientists have become increasingly confident that they will be able to find Martian life forms. Europe and America's robot explorers have found the proof that water, mixed with soil, exists in large amounts on the planet. In addition, on March 28, two different groups of scientists announced that they had found signs of methane( 甲烷) in the Martian atmosphere, the gas is a waste product of living creatures and could be produced by microbes(微生物)living in the red planet's soil. But scientists such as Dr. Lisa Pratt, a biologist at Indiana University, say that these microbes will be put in danger by the little earth project. "Before we have even discovered if there is life on Mars, we are talking about carrying out projects that would destroy all these native life forms, all the strange microbes that we hope to find buried in the soil," said Dr. Pratt. Monica Grady, a planetary scientist at the Natural History Museum, London, shares this view. "We cannot risk starting a global experiment that would wipe out the precious information we are looking for," she said. "This is just wrong". 1. Who is interested in the future of Mars? 2. What does Dr Michael Meyer think is the long-term topic in science fiction? 3. Could Paul Murdin agree on the plan for changing Mars into a little earth? 4. Why have scientists been confident that they will be able to find life forms on Mars? 5. What’s the best title for this article? 三、综合实践性作业 1. Draw a map about life on Mars or another planet and introduce it to parents. 2. To do this project, there is another task. Work in groups of four. Make a survey on your group members’ ideas about whether to live on Mars or other planet. Students’ names Do you believe that humans might move to another planet? If you can have a chance, would you like to move to Mars or another planet? Why? Why not? Do you have any worries about it? If so, what are they? A B C Yourself 2. Write a report according to the result and make a speech in front of the whole class. Dear teachers and classmates: Today I am glad to make a speech about life in outer space. During this week, we have studied a lot and we have further understanding about this topic. In our group, 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
