Review
1.Help students to retell what Jim's family members want to do or will do in the new house. The teacher can provide some incomplete sentences and ask them to fill in the blanks.
◆Jim wants to ________________ in the big living room.
◆Dad asks Jim to help him ________________.
◆Helen wants to ________________ on the balcony.
◆Peter wants to ________________ to their new house.
◆Mum asks Peter to ________________.And she will ________________.
2.Have students play the roles of the family members and work in pairs to make requests or ask for permission using the information above.
Teaching Tip:For high level students, the teacher can encourage them to add more details or activities in the conversation.
Pre-listening
2a
1.Have students skim the conversation and figure out what Jim's family is talking about.
Invite some students to share answers in class and guide students to draw the main idea:Jim's family is talking about what to do for grandparents' arrival.
2.Ask students to read the conversation again in pairs and infer what information can be filled in the blanks according to the context. The teacher can give them the following tips to help them infer:
◆Focus on the part of speech(e.g.verb phrase or noun phrase)
◆Pay attention to the forms(e.g.doing or to do;singular or plural)
◆Use context clues(e.g.sentences before and after the blank)
3.Encourage some pairs to share their inferences and why they think so.
Teaching Tip:For high level students, the teacher can even encourage them to fill in the blanks according to the inferences.
While-listening
2a
Have students listen to the conversation and fill in the blanks.Check their inferences.
2b
1.Let students read the complete conversation and answer the questions.
2.Check the answers with the students.
3.Show the listening scripts and let students read.Draw their attention to the questions beginning with modal verbs can or could.Invite some students to translate their meanings and explain the function.
4.The teacher can make a brief summary of the two sentence structures to prepare for the next activity.
2c
1.Have students work in pairs to complete the mind map with the information from 2a.And add more things to the “other” section.
Teaching Tip:For the “other” section, the teacher can encourage students to list as many things as possible.Besides adding things and cleaning up,students can also brainstorm more aspects.
2.Invite some students to show their answers.
2d
1.Have students work in groups of five and assign roles in each group.
2.Let students listen to the conversation again and remind them to pay attention to the tone, intonation and feelings of their roles.
3.Then every group roleplays the conversation at the same time.During the process, the teacher can walk around to observe if every student is engaged in the activity.Provide help, praise or encouragement if necessary.
4.Invite one group to roleplay the conversation in class.Ask other groups to give feedback after watching.
Post-listening
2e
1.Have students read the instruction and the phrases in the box.Make sure they get the meanings.
2.Read the sample conversations and draw their attention to the sentence patterns “Could you…?” and “Can I…?” and the answers to these questions.
3.Have students work in the same groups as they are in 2d.Discuss which role can help with the activities in the box.For example,Helen can help to make the biscuits and Mum can help to cook a meal. Then make up the conversations between Peter and other members using the sentence patterns “Could you…?” and “Can I…?”.

Teaching Reflection
In this lesson, there were achievements and drawbacks. The diverse teaching activities helped students master the target vocabulary and sentence patterns, and improved their listening and speaking skills. However,I failed to manage time well.Group activities took too much time, making the 2e part rushed. Also,I didn't pay enough attention to individuals. Some students with weak foundations or introverted personalities had low participation. In future classes,I'll allocate time more rationally and focus more on individual students to enhance the teaching quality.
