Ordering food that’s far more than one can eat. Leaving too many leftovers after meals. These examples of food waste will soon become history in China with the help of a new law.
On April 29, the National People’s Congress (NPC) passed a new food waste law that will be carried out immediately, CGTN reported.

These days, there are many shopping holidays. Singles’ Day is the big one for Chinese shoppers. It’s on Nov 11. In the United States, Black Friday is the most well-known one.
Black Friday always falls on the day after the Thanksgiving holiday. On this day, stores give special deals (特别折扣). Shoppers wake up very early. They wait in line at stores before they open. They might start to wait in line as early as 2 or 3 am. Sometimes there are too many people. They find it hard to get inside the stores.

If I could have one extra day in the week, I would have a No Noise Day. Every day, there is a lot of noise around us. It comes from cars, buildings, factories and even our family!
Noise is a great danger to people. Too much loud noise can make people lose their hearing. It can be really bad for us. So I want to have a No Noise Day. It could let people have a peaceful day! On this day, nobody would go to work. You would only hear the wind blowing through the streets. People could have a good rest and relax. For me, I would first get a lot of sleep. Then I would listen to some light music that only I can hear. Finally, I would have a big dinner. But I would not make any noise during these things. Ordering food that’s far more than one can eat. Leaving too many leftovers after meals. These examples of food waste will soon become history in China with the help of a new law.
On April 29, the National People’s Congress (NPC) passed a new food waste law that will be carried out immediately, CGTN reported.
After two readings of its draft, the newly-passed law more clearly defines (定义) food waste, as well as makes clear the responsibilities of both diners and restaurants.
According to the law, when people fail to make good and proper use of food and drinks or throw them away at will, they are wasting food. However, there might be different reasons for leaving food uneaten. For example, students might not finish their meal because they don’t think it tastes good. In this situation, school cafeterias would be advised to improve the taste of their food.
On the other hand, restaurants should not mislead diners to order too much food, either. Otherwise, they will face a fine of up to 10,000 yuan. Restaurants can charge diners a disposal fee (处理费用) if they waste too much food, China Daily reported.
The law also bans programs or videos that show binge-eating (暴饮暴食). People who break this rule will be fined up to 100000 yuan.
The new law will ensure food security and promote thrift (勤俭节约). “Food that is wasted should be used in a much better way,” said Wu Zidan, a professor at Jilin University.

Black Friday is not the only shopping festival in the US. Another similar holiday is Cyber Monday. This day always falls on the first Monday after Thanksgiving.
Personally, I don’t like any of these holidays. They place too much importance on buying things. I like Buy Nothing Day. The “holiday” falls on the same day as Black Friday. It is an international holiday that is against the trend of over-consumption (消费过度).
