IV. 能力提升 A As they were looking up at the ceiling, they saw that there were thousands of bats (蝙蝠) hanging there. They were so afraid that they started to quickly walk toward the other side of the room. They tried another way, because they thought it was not safe to go back through the room with the bats. Tom and Becky walked on, hoping the paths (小道) would curve (弯曲) back around and lead them to the staircase again. But the children never found themselves back at the staircase. “Tom, we’ re lost, aren’t we?” she said. “I’m so sorry, Becky. I don’t know where we are.” Becky fell to the ground and started to cry wildly. Tom tried to ease her thoughts, but there was little he could do to help. “Surely, your mother will see tonight that you haven’t comeback.” he said. “She’ll send people out to look for you.” Becky thought for a moment, and then started to cry even harder than before. “Oh, Tom. She thinks that I’m sleeping at the Harpers’ tonight. She won’t find that I’m missing until late the next morning!” “Alright, Becky. Let’s not cry. We should just keep walking. As long as we walk, there’s hope.” So they walked with no idea where they were going. Tom, after a while, had to put out the candle in order to save it, for he only had one more in his pocket. And so much of the time they walked in total darkness. Tom tried calling out for help several times, but never got any answer in return. Some new plans had to be come up with or they would surely die. Tom had some kite string (风筝线) in his pocket. He took it out, and tied (系) one end to a rock, then he told Becky to sit and wait for him. Tom lit the candle again, and made his way down one of the passages (通道). He didn’t get far, when the floor in front of him suddenly dropped sharply (急剧地) into the black below. He stretched (伸长) his arm to feel how deep the drop was. While he was feeling around, his hand touched another hand. Tom jumped back and held out his candle to see who was there. A face then appeared. It was the face of Injun Joe. —— Adapted from The Adventures ofTom Sawyer 1.Which “ease” in the following sentences has the same meaning of “ease” in the passage? A. B The Chinese language differs from Western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters (汉字) which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture. Chinese characters began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese characters. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent (代表) different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult overtime. However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard (标准的) forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountaintops together. This became one mountaintop and three lines, and overtime turned into the character used nowadays. Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects. Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down”, which are opposites of each other. Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced (发音). Therefore, away was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way. In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope to make learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland. 5.Which is NOT included in the process (过程) of inventing the first Chinese characters? A. Watching the footprints of animals. B. Creating shapes of objects. C. Using different shapes. D. Drawing physical objects. 6.Which Chinese character used the underlined method? A. 山 B. 竹 C. 明 D. 妈 7.What can we learn from the passage? A. Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before. B. Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by large numbers of people. C. Chinese characters existed at the very beginning and are still in use today like other ancient symbols. D. Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together. 8.What might be the best title for the passage? A. How to Form Chinese Characters B. The Development of Chinese Characters C. The History of the Chinese Language D.
