How to Improve Your Reading Skills
When you are learning English, listening, speaking and writing are important. But reading can also be very helpful. When you read you not only learn some new words, but also learn how to use them in sentences which are good examples for writing. Here are some suggestions for reading.
Try to read something that you can understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary, it means you still have a long way to go to improve your English.
Try to make your vocabulary larger. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. But don’t write them while you are reading. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read. After you have finished reading, come back to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.
Read what you think is interesting. Choose a book or magazine about a theme that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. You can also read newspapers. There are always popular themes for you to choose.
1.Are listening, speaking and writing important when you are learning English?
2.What do you do when you find new words while reading?
3.What time do you look up the new words?
4.Why do you read newspaper?
5.How many suggestions are mentioned in this passage?
【答案】1.Yes, they are. 2.Try to guess the meanings. 3.After I have finished reading. 4.Because there are always popular themes. 5.Three.

Hello, I’m Wei Fen. Last year, I did not like my English class. Every class was like a bad dream. The teacher spoke very quickly and I couldn’t understand her most of the time. I was afraid to ask questions because I didn’t know how to read the words correctly. I just hid behind my textbook and never said anything in class.
Then one day I watched an English movie—Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie. So I began to watch other English movies, too. Although I could not understand everything the characters said, their body language and the expressions on their faces help me get the meaning. I understood I could get the meaning by listening for just the key words. I found out that listening to something interesting is the secret to the language learning. I also learned some useful sentences like “It’s a piece of cake”or “It serves you right”. I did not understand these at first. But because I wanted to understand the story, I looked them up in a dictionary.
Now I really enjoy my English class. I want to learn new words and more grammar so that I can have a better understanding of English movies.

I am Canadian. I started learning French when I was 10 years old. But my whole experience with the language was in the classroom. All of that changed, however, during my last summer of high school. As a 17-year-old girl, I flew across the country by myself for the first time! I headed for Quebec to live in the province with a French-speaking host family, who didn’t speak any English. And I would learn French at a local school.
On the first day of school, all of us students were given a test to determine(测定)our language level. We were required to speak only French all summer.
I made every effort to communicate in a second language by making new friends, seeing movies and even ordering food from restaurants in French. Though I couldn’t understand most of it at the very beginning, the whole experience was exciting and refreshing.
On weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different places around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St. Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see huge whales swimming around our boat. The most memorable part of our trip was a visit to historic Quebec City. I walked along the stone streets, took pictures of the European-style(欧式的)buildings, and learned some stories there.
Finally my efforts paid off! At the end of the summer, I was able to communicate pretty well. I couldn’t wait to go back to school and talk with my French teacher. Being fully immersed(沉浸)in a French-speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. And it could be the main reason for my improvement in French.

2.How did the local school determine the students’ language level?
3.Did the writer enjoy the experience of communicating in French?
4.What did the writer think of the visit to historic Quebec City?

3.此处问作者喜欢用法语交流的这段经历吗,是一般疑问句,用yes或者no来回答。根据第三段 “Though I couldn’t understand most of it at the very beginning, the whole experience was exciting and refreshing.” 虽然我一开始大部分并不太明白,但整个经历是令人兴奋和耳目一新。由此判断作者非常喜欢这段语言学习的经历,是肯定的回答。根据“did the writer”可知助动词是did。故答案为Yes, she did.
4.此处问作者对历史悠久的魁北克市的这次访问是怎么看的。根据倒数第二段 “The most memorable part of our trip was a visit to historic Quebec City.”我们这次旅行最难忘的部分是参观历史悠久的魁北克市。因此作者认为参观历史悠久的魁北克市是旅行中最难忘的部分。故答案为It was the most memorable part of the trip.

There are many holidays and festivals. But do our grandparents have a special festival? Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for the old people in China. It started long ago. The festival is on lunar September 9th. On this day, people show love and respect to the grandparents.
There are many ways in which Chinese people express their respect. When an older person enters a room, everyone stands. People are introduced from the oldest to the youngest. When we present a book to an older person, two hands are used. Young people always offer their seats to older people on a crowded subway or bus.
Respecting older people is a tradition in China. That’s because the Chinese know that older people have knowledge and experience that young people can learn. Chinese people are proud of being old.
In Western countries, however, older people seldom think they are old. They are called “senior” instead of old people. They’d rather do everything themselves. Even after retirement (退休), they take up hobbies, part- time jobs and new activities to keep their bodies working well.
Westerners respect their older people, too. Usually, seniors don’t have to buy tickets for trains and buses. They are given discounts (折扣) in stores and restaurants.
But Western seniors don’t often live with their children—they live alone. For holidays, the family usually gather at the grandparents’ home. A great smile and a warm hug for the parents are enough for grown children to show their respect.

If you ask people from different countries “Could you tell me the way to the post office?”, you will get different answers.
In Japan, people use landmarks (路标) instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. For example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions. They will often say, “Follow me.” Then he or she will take you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes if a person, like a New Yorker, doesn’t know the answer to your question, he or she might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.”
But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers like “I don’t know”. People there think “I don’t know” is not polite. They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. A visitor can often get lost in Yucatan!
But one thing will help you everywhere. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually point to the correct direction. Go on in that direction and you may find the post office!
1.Will Americans use landmarks to tell people the way?
2.How many examples are given in the article?
3.What is the passage mainly about?
4.Do you like the way people in Yucatan answer visitors’ question? Why or why not?

Try to make your vocabulary larger. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. But don’t write them while you are reading. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read. After you have finished reading, come back to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book. Then try to remember them.
Read what you think is interesting. Choose a book or magazine about a theme that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. You can also read newspapers. There are always popular themes for you to choose.

1.When did the writer start learning French?
2.How did the local school determine the students’ language level?
3.Did the writer enjoy the experience of communicating in French?
4.What did the writer think of the visit to historic Quebec City?
5.What could be the main reason for the writer’s improvement in French?

These days, the ways of celebrating the Spring Festival are very different from before. The younger generation (一代) is making the celebrations more colourful.
Xiao Yao is a college student from Guangdong Province. He always has lots of traditions to follow during the Spring Festival, such as hanging lanterns and praying (祈祷) at temples.
Chinese families used to give out lucky money in a red paper envelope to their young and unmarried relatives at the start of a new year for good luck.
However, in recent years, as technology has highly developed, Xiao has taught his family members how to give hongbao filled with lucky money to a group through WeChat wallets on their mobile phones. “The hongbao is often grabbed (抢) by group members in only a few seconds. We compete against one another. It’s fun,” said Xiao. “The world is developing as social needs are changing, and now ideas make traditional festivals creative.”
According to a report by China Youth Daily, having parties and going skating are the most popular activities for the young to celebrate the Spring Festival. While new ideas are appearing, many young people still believe following traditions can make them feel close to the older generation. Li Yu, a college student from Hunan Province, said that putting up couplets (对联) and watching the Spring Festival Gala on television with parents have never been missed. “While accepting new ways, I think traditional cultures are what matter the most, especially during festivals,” she said.

Modern life is impossible without traveling. The fastest way of traveling is by plane. With a modern airliner (大型客机), you can travel in one day to places which needed a month or more to get to hundreds of years ago.
Traveling by train is slower than by plane, but you can see the places you are traveling through. Modern trains have comfortable seats and dining cars. They even make the longest journey enjoyable.
Some people prefer to travel by sea. You can visit many other countries or different parts of your country. Ships are not so fast as trains or planes, but traveling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.
Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own timetable. You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty or one hundred miles a day, just as you like. You can stop if there is something interesting, for example, at a good restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal, or at a hotel to spend the night. That’s why traveling by car is popular for pleasure trips, while people usually take a train or a plane when they travel on business.

China’s railway miracles (奇迹) have been on since last century. It is seen as one of the new four great inventions in modern China.
During the Qing Dynasty, building a railway without other countries’ help was believed to be impossible. But Zhan Tianyou, an engineer of the Jingzhang Railway, got over all kinds of difficulties and succeeded in finishing the task. The 200-kilometer-long Jingzhang railway was completed in 1909. As China’s first independently-designed (自主设计) railway, it plays an important part in Chinese railway history.
110 years later, the world’s first intelligent, high-speed railway line, connecting Beijing and Zhangjiakou, came into operation. The railway line is 174 kilometers long with 10 stations. Running at a high speed of 350 km/h, the railway line has greatly reduced the travel time between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, from over 3 hours to only 47 minutes. Some trains on the Beijing-Zhangjiakou line are smart because they provide 5G signals and wireless charging (无线充电) for passengers. These trains can start, open and close doors, and deal with problems by themselves.
All the ten stations provide e-tickets for passengers. Passengers who have bought e-tickets online can use their ID cards instead of waiting in line for paper tickets. They are convenient and help save much paper every year.
1.What is Zhan Tianyou?
2.Why is Jingzhang railway important in Chinese railway history?
3.How long does it take from Beijing to Zhangjiakou by high-speed railway now?
4.What service can the passengers enjoy on some smart trains?
