My husband came across the program from my father-in-law’s high school graduation, 90 years ago. It was the class of 1928 and their class motto (格言) was “Build for character, not for fame.”
I’m pretty sure society has done a full reverse on that one.
These days, we have people who are famous for simply being famous. They haven’t done anything particularly impressive, but they do take great selfies.
We are all obsessed with fame these days, mainly thanks to social media. All we want is for people to follow us, friend us, like us, or share our posts. We are nearly desperate for fame.
“Build for character, not for fame,” is based on the assumption that one is looking up and ahead. That’s an encouraging idea, especially today, when most of us have our heads down, looking at the screens of our smartphones. Looking ahead and building for character takes thought and intentionality (意向性).
One can be intentional in building for fame as well but fame often relies heavily on the right timing and connections, as well as the creation of a base of fans and supporters.
Character isn’t subject to the ideas of others. Character is built with self-discipline (自律), and a willingness to learn from difficulties. Character grows internally (内在地) and needs no applause.
Fame depends on people looking at you, while character is who you are when no one is looking.
Fame often comes with jealousy (嫉妒); a feeling that time is running out or that someone better than you is coming to steal your fans.
Character is marked by feeling content and being generous. There is satisfaction that comes with the reward of achievements, but at the same time, good character willingly holds the door open for others who are also hoping to achieve.
This commencement (毕业典礼) season, speakers will tell new graduates to get out there and build a better world.
The best way to build a better world is to build character, the kind that runs deep and can carry you through life’s storms.
Build character with courage, justice (公正) and strength. Build character by respecting yourself and respecting others. Build character with kindness, hope and love. Build for character and you will build a better world.
4. The underlined phrase “has done a full reverse on” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. has taken full advantage of
B. has done the complete opposite to
C. has made a good practice of
D. has paid a lot of attention to
5. People’s desire for fame has a lot to do with ______.
A. the rise of social media
B. the impact of well-known stars
C. their intention to make a difference
D. their satisfaction with their achievements
6. In the author’s opinion, “building for character” requires people to ______.
A. mind their behavior when being looked at
B. connect with others at the right time
C. look ahead and gladly accept other people’s advice
D. behave themselves and readily learn from hardships
7. Why does the author value “building for character”?
A. It inspires people to achieve more.
B. It honors her family’s memory.
C It enables us to build a better world.
D. It helps us gain respect from other people.
C
Some people think asking for help is a sign of weakness, but the complete opposite is true. It takes strength to ask for help. It’s a hard thing to do. The truth is, there are more good people than bad. People truly want to help others. No one should ever have to be in that dark place.
I have a friend called Diane. Diane is one of the most positive people I have ever known. She is smart and funny, and by looking at her you would certainly think she had a perfect life. No one knew the terrible things she was dealing with. She never asked anyone for help when she was in great trouble. She thought that she would just be bothering people if she told them the truth. She thought loneliness was her answer. She masked her loneliness, but one day she hit her breaking point.
Diane tried to take her life one morning. She was lucky, though. Someone found her before it was too late. People finally knew her problems and with their help she got rid of them. She once told me that her biggest regret was not reaching out to someone sooner. Diane has greatly changed. She’s become positive and is always ready to help others.
Diane and I have grown quite close. She has helped me battle my own problems. She is an example of what help looks like.
To anyone out there who feels they are alone, I hope you know you are not. Even if you feel the world is closing in on you, there are people who care—people who will surprise you in the best ways. The best thing about our technological world is how easily you can reach people. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are not alone.
8. What does the author mean by saying “the complete opposite is true” in Paragraph 1?
A. Getting help from others is a great shame. B. Asking for help shows great courage.
C. It takes bravery to offer help. D. It is difficult to get help.
9. Why did Diane refuse to ask for help at first?
A. She was very positive. B. She had no one to turn to.
C. She considered help useless. D. She feared to make trouble for others.
10. What does the author think of our technological world today?
A. It makes people afraid of face-to-face conversation.
B. It makes communication between people easier.
C. It offers a variety of ways to care for others.
D. It is likely to make people feel lonely.
11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To share a friend’s story.
B. To explain why people refuse to get help.
C. To encourage us to ask for help if necessary.
D. To show the harm of keeping problems ourselves.
D
When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms. Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free. A study estimated that every year, 26,735 people went to the emergency room for adverse (不利的) events related to OTC cold and cough medicines.
When two or more drugs are used together, their interactions can sometimes produce unexpected harmful effects. Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.
It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients. A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.
While everyone could potentially experience adverse effects from cold and flu medicines, some groups — including older adults, children and pregnant women — may be at greater risk. Older people who are using prescribed drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are. This can put older adults at higher risk for an overdose and drug-to-drug interactions with some medicines.
The Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do not recommend giving cold medicines to children under age 4. Because of a variety of factors, young children have a higher risk of an accidental overdose and adverse events that could lead to death.
12. What does the author advise patients to do in Paragraph 2?
A. To ask for suggestions from doctors. B. To buy medicines from hospitals.
C. To read the package ingredients of drugs. D. To take drugs as early as possible.
13. What’s the purpose of mentioning cold medicines in Paragraph 3?
A. To provide a medical choice for people who catch a cold.
B. To show cold medicines are more likely to cause bad effects.
C. To explain OTC medicines often have more than one ingredient.
D. To stress the importance of learning about medicines’ ingredients.
14. What can we infer about older people in Paragraph 4?
A. They can’t cope with aging positively. B. Their body can’t handle medicines easily.
C. They are more easily affected by diseases. D. Their desire for health makes them unwise.
15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Say No to OTC Drugs B. Tips on Taking OTC Drugs
C. OTC Medicines May Not Be Safe D. How to Deal with an OTC Drug Overdose

Talking plants have long been a thing of myths and legends. Many cultures have stories of talking trees that give advice as well as ____36____ (warn) to people. Alexander the Great and Marco Polo were said ____37____ (visit) such a tree in India. And in some modern stories, such as the film Avatar, trees can communicate with animals and people.
With us long ____38____ (believe) that talking plants are fantasy, new research has revealed something amazing: ____39____ appears that plants can communicate after all.
It ____40____ (be) known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant, say a bean plant, gets attacked by insects. The plant releases tiny amounts of chemicals from the leaves ____41____ are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I’m being attacked!” When another bean plant detects the chemicals from its ____42____ (injure) neighbour, it starts to release its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract insects — the wasps! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the bean plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow crops ____43____ pesticides.
More ____44____ (surprise), plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chilli plants do this. They also “listen” to the noises from other plants. A chilli plant can tell if _____45_____ neighbouring plant is helpful, or unfriendly. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water, indicating drought is arriving.

There were once two rabbits, Wanda the Wise and Frederick the Foolish, who were walking through a field. They were good friends and enjoyed their wander together.
On this walk, they came upon two carrots. One of the carrots had large leaves coming out of the top and the other looked much smaller from the surface. Frederick was excited and ran up to the carrot with the larger leaves. “I’ll have this one.” he proudly exclaimed and proceeded to pulling it out from the ground. Wanda shrugged her shoulders and pulled out the other carrot, which turned out to be much bigger. Frederick was surprised and asked how this could possibly be. Wanda looked at her friend and replied, “You can’t always judge a carrot by its leaves.”
They kept on walking and came across another pair of carrots, again with different sized leaves. This time Frederick allowed his friend the first pick. Wanda hopped to each carrot, inspected (检查) and sniffed them carefully and, to Frederick’s surprise, chose the carrot with the larger leaves.
As they each pulled their carrots out from the ground, Frederick was confused to see that his carrot was still smaller than Wanda’s.
“You said that carrots with larger leaves are not always larger. I thought carrots with small leaves meant larger ones.” he said.
“No,” replied Wanda, “I said don’t judge a carrot by its leaves. It’s also important to remember to think before you choose.”
Frederick nodded and they ate their carrots before continuing their stroll.
For a third time, they found two carrots, again with different sized leaves. Frederick looked confused and didn’t know what to do. Wanda indicated that he could choose which carrot to eat.

We are all obsessed with fame these days mainly thanks to social media.
One can be intentional in building for fame as well, but fame often relies heavily on the right timing and connections, as well as the creation of a base of fans and supporters.
C. It enables us to build a better world.
D. It helps us gain respect from other people.
B 5. A 6. D 7.

B 9. D 10. B 11. C

A 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据第二段中的“Physicians are typically knowledgeable about potential drug interactions, so it is very important for patients to ask their healthcare providers which OTC medicines are safe for them to use.(医生通常对潜在的药物相互作用非常了解,所以对病人来说,询问他们的医生哪些非处方药对他们来说是安全的是非常重要的。)” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“It is important to read the package ingredients of OTC medicines closely to avoid duplication of doses. Cold medicines are typically made up of multiple ingredients. A person who takes a single-ingredient medicine paired with one of these multi-ingredient medicines can receive an unsafe dose of that ingredient.(仔细阅读非处方药的包装成分以避免重复剂量是很重要的。感冒药通常由多种成分组成。一个人服用单一成分的药物与其中一种多种成分的药物搭配,可能会收到不安全剂量的该成分。)”可知,作者在第三段中提感冒药是为了强调了解药物成分的重要性。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Older people who are using prescribed drugs to treat multiple health conditions may have a higher risk of drug interactions because of the higher number of medicines being used at the same time to treat different conditions. The aging body is not as expert at absorbing, distributing and clearing medicines as younger bodies are.(使用处方药治疗多种健康状况的老年人可能有更高的药物相互作用风险,因为同时使用更多的药物来治疗不同的疾病。衰老的身体不像年轻的身体那样擅长吸收、分配和清除药物。)”可以推断出老年人的身体不容易接受药物。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段中的“When colds and flu hit, many people automatically turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medicines to push through and treat their symptoms. Although these medicines are easily accessible and widely used, it might come as a surprise to many people to learn that they are not risk-free.(当感冒和流感来袭时,许多人会不由自主地求助于非处方药(OTC)来克服和治疗他们的症状。虽然这些药物很容易获得并被广泛使用,但许多人可能会惊讶地发现它们并非没有风险。)”可知,本文主要讲的是非处方药(OTC),如感冒和流感药物的风险。C选项“OTC Medicines May Not Be Safe(非处方药可能不安全)”最适合用作本文的标题。故选C。

How to Find Your Inner Self
Figuring out who you are and your place in the world is a life-long task. ___16___ Once you realize that finding yourself is an ongoing process, not some sort of goal you must achieve, you’ll realize that you know much more about your inner self than you’ve ever imagined. Here are a few tips that can help you find your inner self.
Think about the moments you are most proud of in your life.
Finding meaning in your life is not easy, nor should it be, but you can get wonderful clues from your own past. ___17___, as they often give you the most meaning and purpose while working, traveling, or learning.
___18___.
As you reflect on things that made you proud, think about what these experiences reveal about your values. Try asking yourself, what values are connected with the things that make me feel proud?
Determine the things you want in life.
Finding your inner self is as much about looking forward as looking back. Whether it is a job, a house in your favorite town, a loving partner, or lazy Sundays with a book, your desires reveal a lot about you. Simply write down the things you want in life.
Look beyond the labels(标签) given to you by others.
___19___ These labels are important to help define your roles and responsibilities in the world, but they are not you. They are just labels, and you are far more complex than a few words.
Remember that finding your inner self is a life-long process because you are always changing. Looking back on your life, note how often you were wrong about yourself. ___20___ Even if you’re sure about yourself now, this change will always happen as you move through life.
A. Recognize your values.
B. Make you proud.
C. But it doesn’t have to be frightening.
D. Think about what you want to achieve in your life,
E. Think about the things that brought your great pride in yourself,
F. How often did your likes, desires and goals change as you grew older?
G. At any one time, you may be considered a daughter, a girlfriend, an employee, and a tennis player.
C 17. E 18. A 19. G 20. F
根据前一句“Figuring out who you are and your place in the world is a life-long task.(弄清楚你是谁以及你在世界上的位置是一个终身的任务。)”以及后面的句子“Once you realize that finding yourself is an ongoing process, not some sort of goal you must achieve, you’ll realize that you know much more about your inner self than you’ve ever imagined.(一旦你意识到发现自己是一个不断进行的过程,而不是你必须实现的某种目标,你就会意识到,你对内在自我的了解比你想象的要多得多。)” But it doesn’t have to be frightening.(但这并不一定是可怕的。)
第二段的小标题是“Think about the moments you are most proud of in your life.(想想你生命中最让你骄傲的时刻。)” Think about the things that brought your great pride in yourself(想想是什么让你为自己感到骄傲)中的brought your great pride与小标题中的you are most proud of相一致,且Think about the things与小标题的Think about the moments相一致,因此E选项呼应本段主题,符合语境,故选E。
空格处是本段的小标题,由“As you reflect on things that made you proud, think about what these experiences reveal about your values. Try asking yourself, what values are connected with the things that make me feel proud?(当你回想那些让你骄傲的事情时,想想这些经历揭示了你的价值观。试着问问自己,什么价值观与让我感到自豪的事情有关?)”可知,本段主要讲的是要认识自己的价值观,A选项Recognize your values.(认识到你的价值观。)概括了本段主题,符合语境,故选A。
【19题详解】
后面的句子“These labels are important to help define your roles and responsibilities in the world, but they are not you. They are just labels, and you are far more complex than a few words.(这些标签对定义你在世界上的角色和责任很重要,但它们不是你。它们只是标签,你比几个单词要复杂得多。)”表明人在生活中有很多身份和责任,这些身份的定义很重要,“These labels”和G选项At any one time, you may be considered a daughter, a girlfriend, an employee, and a tennis player.(在任何时候,你都可能被认为是一个女儿,一个女朋友,一个雇员,一个网球运动员。)中的a daughter, a girlfriend, an employee, and a tennis player相呼应,此答案举例说明人可能有很多标签,因此G选项符合语境,在空格处起到启下的作用,故选G。
空格前说“Looking back on your life, note how often you were wrong about yourself.(回顾你的一生,注意你有多少次对自己的看法是错误的。)”,F选项How often did your likes, desires and goals change as you grew older?(随着年龄的增长,你的喜好、愿望和目标会发生多少变化?)中的How often和上文的how often相一致,且change和前面的changing及后面的this change相呼应,因此F选项承上启下,符合语境,故选F。

Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water, indicating drought is arriving.

be said to do sth. 故填to have visited。
it appears that... 故填it。
故填has been。
故填which/that。
故填without。
故填a。

Wanda smiled warmly, hopped over to the bigger carrot and pulled it out to his friend.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Frederick, the poor foolish didn’t really know what to do. He pretended to inspect and sniff them carefully, just as Wanda did, but in vain. He was about to pull the carrot with bigger leaves when he was torn inside. What if the other carrot was bigger? He was at a loss how to tell which carrot was bigger. “My best friend, please help me!” So eager was Frederick to eat the bigger carrot that he stamped his feet, sweating on his head.
Wanda smiled warmly, hopped over to the bigger carrot and pulled it out to his friend. Frederick looked to Wanda with a look of disbelief on his face. “Frederick, there’s no point in having wisdom if you’re not willing to share the benefits of it with others. You’re my friend and I want you to have this carrot. A smart rabbit with a full stomach but no friends isn’t really wise, is she?” said Wanda. Frederick hung his head in shame at the thought of Wanda’s generosity. It dawned on him that the possession of friendship made his day. (156 words)
