课时教学内容分析(含教材分析)
This section comes from Starter Unit 1 Hello! of the People's Education Press (2024) English textbook for Grade 7. The main content is to teach students how to use a dictionary. The textbook provides a dictionary page as an example, guiding students to observe the word arrangement order in the dictionary, understand the function of parts of speech, and learn to select appropriate definitions according to the context. This content not only helps students master an important learning tool but also deepens their understanding of the English alphabet order and lays a solid foundation for future independent learning.
课时学情分析
Knowledge Base: At this stage, students have already learned the 26 English letters and some simple words and phrases in primary school. They have a certain foundation in pronunciation and spelling, which can help them understand the alphabetical order in the dictionary. However, they are still in the initial stage of systematic English learning, with limited vocabulary and weak language application ability.
Learning Interest and Motivation: Grade 7 students are generally full of curiosity and enthusiasm for new knowledge. The topic of learning to use a dictionary is closely related to their daily learning, which can arouse their interest. But due to the relatively abstract nature of dictionary knowledge, some students may find it difficult and may lack learning motivation.
Learning Ability and Style: Students at this age have strong imitation and memory abilities, but their independent learning and problem-solving abilities are still in the process of development. In terms of learning style, some students are more visual learners, while others are auditory or kinesthetic learners. Therefore, diversified teaching methods need to be adopted to meet the needs of different students.

课时教学过程(应包括教学步骤、教学、设计意图、组织形式等内容)
Lead-in (5 minutes)
Greet the students as usual, creating a relaxed classroom atmosphere.
Show some pictures of different types of dictionaries (such as English-Chinese dictionaries, English-English dictionaries, electronic dictionaries) on the PPT and ask students: "Have you ever used a dictionary? What kind of dictionary have you used? What do you usually use the dictionary for?" Encourage students to share their experiences, and then briefly introduce the importance of dictionaries in English learning, such as helping us understand the meaning of new words, learn correct pronunciation, and expand vocabulary.
Presentation (12 minutes)
Use the PPT to show a sample dictionary page, enlarge it to make the details clear. Point to different parts of the dictionary page, such as the entry word (in bold), the pronunciation symbol, the definition, and the example sentence, and explain their functions one by one. For example, say: "Look at this word 'apple'. The bold part is the entry word we are looking for. Next to it, you can see the pronunciation symbol, which tells us how to read this word. Then, here are the definitions, explaining what 'apple' means. And this is an example sentence, showing how to use 'apple' in a sentence."
Show the dictionary page in Project 2a on the PPT. Ask students to read the page carefully and circle the words in blue. Then ask: "What order are these words in?" Guide students to observe and think. After a while, invite some students to answer. If students have difficulty answering, give some hints, such as comparing the first letters of these words. Finally, summarize with the students that all the words in a dictionary are arranged in alphabetical order.
Write some words on the blackboard, such as "cat", "dog", "apple", "banana", "elephant". Ask students to come to the blackboard and arrange these words in alphabetical order. This can further reinforce students' understanding of alphabetical order.
Practice (15 minutes)
Look at the words in Project 2b on the PPT. Divide the students into pairs. Each pair is required to put the words in alphabetical order. Walk around the classroom, observe the students' progress, and offer help and guidance when necessary. After most pairs have finished, ask some pairs to come to the front of the classroom and share their answers on the PPT. Have a class discussion, correct any mistakes, and clarify any misunderstandings.
Organize a friendly competition. Divide the class into several groups. Each group is given a dictionary. Show the words in Project 2c on the PPT, such as "short", "animal", "tomato", "beautiful", "brown", "lake", "glass", "house", "picture", "shoe". Announce the rules of the competition: the group that can find these words in the dictionary as fast as possible and correctly write down the word class and a simple definition for each word wins. Emphasize the importance of accuracy while pursuing speed. Start the competition and time it. After the competition, check the answers of each group, and give praise and encouragement to the winning group and all the participating groups.
Production (8 minutes)
Divide the students into groups of four. Each group is given a set of words, which are a bit more difficult than the previous ones, such as "hesitate", "magnificent", "opportunity", "restaurant", "umbrella". Each group needs to use the dictionary to find the following information for each word: pronunciation, word class, main definitions, and an example sentence.
Each group member is responsible for looking up some of the words. Then, they share the information they have found within the group, discuss and organize it. After that, each group selects a representative to come to the front of the classroom and present their findings to the whole class using the PPT or the blackboard.
During the presentation, other groups listen carefully and can ask questions or make comments. This can not only train students' ability to use dictionaries independently but also improve their cooperation and presentation skills.
Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summarize the key points of this class with the students, such as the importance of dictionaries, the alphabetical order of words in the dictionary, how to find information about words in the dictionary, and how to select appropriate definitions according to the context.
Assign homework: Ask students to create their own small dictionaries. They need to collect at least ten new words they have learned recently or encountered in their reading, write down the words, pronunciation, word class, definitions, and example sentences for each word in alphabetical order. This homework can help students further consolidate the knowledge of using dictionaries and expand their vocabulary.
