Unit 4 In the neighbourhood-E Writing This writing section in Unit 4 “In the neighbourhood” focuses on guiding students to write about their neighbourhoods. It aims to help students organize their thoughts, use appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures to describe the location, facilities, activities, and people in their neighbourhoods. By the end of this writing lesson, students are expected to be able to produce a well - structured and vivid description of their living environments. 教学目标 A. Knowledge Objectives Students will be able to master relevant vocabulary about the neighbourhood, such as “bakery”, “bookstore”, “shopping centre”, “park”, “cinema”, etc. They can correctly use sentence patterns like “There be...” to describe the existence of things in the neighbourhood, and use simple present tense to talk about daily activities and general situations. For example, “There is a beautiful park near my home. People often go there for a walk in the evening.” B. Ability Objectives Develop students' writing skills, including how to organize paragraphs, make the description logical, and use proper connecting words. For instance, they can use “besides”, “in addition”, “moreover” to add more details. Improve students' ability to observe and summarize. They should be able to notice the characteristics of their neighbourhoods and express them accurately in writing. C. Emotional Objectives Foster students' love for their own neighbourhoods by writing about them, and enhance their sense of community. Encourage students to be confident in expressing their ideas in English writing. 教学重难点 A. Key Points The application of relevant vocabulary and sentence patterns for describing the neighbourhood. The construction of a clear and organized writing structure. Usually, it can follow the pattern of overall introduction, detailed description of different aspects (such as facilities, people), and conclusion with personal feelings. B. Difficult Points How to make the description vivid and attractive. This requires students to use adjectives and adverbs properly, like “lively”, “quietly”, “friendly”. Helping students overcome the fear of writing in English and guiding them to think in English during the writing process. A. Vocabulary Neighbourhood facilities: bakery (a place where bread and cakes are made and sold), bookstore (a shop that sells books), shopping centre (a large building or area with many different shops), park (a public area with grass, trees, and often playgrounds), cinema (a place where people go to watch movies), library (a building where people can borrow books, study, etc.), hospital (a place for treating the sick), school, post office, bank. Activities: play basketball/football, fly a kite, go shopping, read books, watch a movie, take a walk, have a picnic. Descriptive words: beautiful, quiet, lively, convenient, friendly, clean. B. Sentence Patterns There be 句型: There is + singular noun + location. e.g. There is a small bakery on the corner. There are + plural nouns + location. e.g. There are many trees and flowers in the park. Simple present tense for habits and general statements: Subject + verb (base form or - s/es) + other elements. e.g. People often go to the shopping centre on weekends. I like to play in the park after school. C. Connecting Words To add information: and, also, besides, in addition, moreover. To show contrast: but, however. To give examples: for example, such as. 教学过程 A. Lead - in (5 minutes) Show some pictures of different neighbourhoods on the PPT, including pictures of parks, busy streets with shops, and quiet residential areas. Ask students: “What can you see in these pictures? Do you like these neighbourhoods? Why or why not?” Encourage students to share their opinions briefly. This can arouse students' interest and activate their prior knowledge about neighbourhoods. B. Knowledge Presentation (10 minutes) Vocabulary review Present the vocabulary about neighbourhood facilities on the PPT one by one. Pronounce the words clearly and ask students to repeat after the teacher several times. Then, randomly point to a picture and ask students to quickly say the corresponding word. For example, when pointing to a picture of a cinema, students should say “cinema”. Sentence pattern explanation Write the “There be” sentence patterns on the blackboard. Explain the structure and usage with examples. Let students make their own sentences using the “There be” pattern based on the pictures of the neighbourhood facilities. For instance, a student may say “There is a library near my school.” Review the simple present tense. Give some examples of sentences about daily activities in the neighbourhood, like “People walk their dogs in the morning.” Ask students to identify the verb forms and explain why they are in the simple present tense. Then, ask students to make sentences about their own daily activities in the neighbourhood using the simple present tense. C. Writing Guidance (15 minutes) Structure analysis Present a sample passage about a neighbourhood on the PPT. Analyze the structure of the passage with students. Usually, it starts with an overall introduction, such as “My neighbourhood is a wonderful place to live.” Then, it has a detailed description of different aspects, like “There is a big park in my neighbourhood. People can do various activities there. Besides, there are many nice shops nearby.” Finally, it ends with personal feelings, “I really love my neighbourhood because it is so convenient and full of life.” Let students understand the importance of a clear structure in writing. Brainstorming Divide students into groups of four. Ask each group to brainstorm about their own neighbourhoods. They can discuss the following aspects: The location of their neighbourhood. The main facilities in the neighbourhood (such as shops, parks, schools). The activities people usually do in the neighbourhood. What they like or dislike about their neighbourhoods. Each group chooses a representative to write down the key points on a piece of paper. Outlining Guide students to make an outline based on their brainstorming results. For example: Introduction: Briefly introduce their neighbourhood, such as its name and general impression. Body: Describe the facilities (use “There be” sentences). Talk about the activities (use simple present tense). Mention likes and dislikes. Conclusion: Express personal feelings about the neighbourhood. Walk around the classroom to provide guidance and help students who have difficulties in making the outline. D. Writing Practice (10 minutes) Ask students to start writing their own descriptions of their neighbourhoods according to the outline they have made. Remind them to use the vocabulary, sentence patterns, and connecting words they have learned. The teacher walks around the classroom, observing students' writing process. Provide individual guidance, such as correcting grammar mistakes, suggesting better word choices, or helping with the organization of ideas. For example, if a student writes “There have a lot of trees in the park.”, the teacher can point out the mistake and correct it to “There are a lot of trees in the park.” E. Peer Review and Revision (5 minutes) After students finish writing, pair them up. Each student exchanges their writing with their partner. Give students a peer - review checklist, which may include items like: Are there any grammar mistakes? Are the vocabulary and sentence patterns used correctly? Is the structure clear? Are there enough details? Are the connecting words used properly? Students read their partner's writing carefully and mark the mistakes or give suggestions according to the checklist. Then, they return the writing to the original writer. The original writer makes revisions based on the partner's suggestions. 教学反思 In this writing class, the use of pictures in the lead - in part effectively attracted students' attention and made them actively participate in the discussion. However, in the future, more real - life videos of neighbourhoods can be shown to provide students with more vivid and comprehensive visual information. During the knowledge presentation, most students could master the vocabulary and sentence patterns, but some students still had difficulty in using the “There be” sentence pattern correctly. In the follow - up exercises, more targeted practice should be arranged for these students. The group brainstorming and outlining activities helped students organize their thoughts before writing. But some groups spent too much time on brainstorming, which affected the writing practice time. Next time, more specific time limits should be set for each step of the group work. Peer review was a new experience for many students. Some students were not very good at giving constructive suggestions. Teachers can provide more examples of good peer - review comments in advance to guide students to make more useful reviews. Overall, this writing lesson achieved most of the teaching objectives, but there is still room for improvement in teaching methods and time management. 2 / 37 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
