Once he was asked how he became good at writing. He said it all started from an experience with his mother when he was six. He tried to write a short story about his pet dog, but he crumpled (揉皱) the paper and threw it away—he thought the story was terrible. The paper was all over his desk. When his mother came into his room, she didn’t get angry. Instead, she said, “Dear, what a interesting story draft (草稿) you have! I’ve never seen such a lovely description of a dog. Would you like to read it to me before we fix the parts you don’t like?” He nodded and read it. After that, they talked about how to make the story better together. Then his mother said, “This is just a small step for your writing. Let’s go to the park tomorrow and watch your pet dog again. Maybe you can find more details to add to your story.” The young writer did as his mother said. He watched the dog run, play and eat, and added those details to his story. The story became much better. That lesson stayed with him forever. The writer later said that moment made him know writing wasn’t about being perfect at first. He learned that small mistakes or bad drafts are just chances to make things better—which is what writing is all about. Even if your first work isn’t good, you can always improve it with more effort. 1. When did the story between the writer and his mother happen? 2. What did the writer’s mother ask him to do before fixing the story? 3. Why did the mother suggest going to the park the next day? 4. What did the writer learn about writing from this childhood experience? 5. What can you learn from the writer’s experience? 答案 词句新知速递 1. finish homework by oneself 2. run faster than me 3. all the other friends 4. read two books a week 5. learn English by oneself in the library 6. more carefully than the other students in the class 基础知识巩固 一、单词 1. finish 2. carefully 3. yourselves 4. pages 5. half 二、改写句子 1. is cleverer than any other boy 2. jumped lower 3. the best; any other student 4. draw pictures on his own 5. by ourselves 能力提升 1.
