教学过程
A. Lead - in (5 minutes)
Greet the students and show some pictures on the PPT, including pictures of people engaged in different hobbies (such as a person looking through a telescope, a painter painting a picture, a photographer taking photos) and people in various careers (an astronaut in a spacesuit, a scientist in a laboratory).
Ask students: "Look at these pictures. Can you tell me what hobbies these people might have? And what careers do they seem to be in?" Encourage students to share their answers and have a brief discussion.
Then introduce the topic of this class: "Today, we are going to read a passage about some people who turned their hobbies into successful careers. Let's see how they did it."
B. Pre - reading (10 minutes)
Vocabulary Teaching
Present the new words and phrases on the PPT one by one. For each word or phrase, show its pronunciation, meaning, and an example sentence. For example, for the word "telescope", show the picture of a telescope, read the word /ˈtelɪskəʊp/, and give the sentence "He used a telescope to observe the stars last night."
Let students read the words and phrases after the teacher several times to practice pronunciation.
Do a quick vocabulary quiz. Show some words or phrases on the PPT without their meanings, and ask students to raise their hands and tell the meanings.
Prediction
Show the title of the reading passage "Road to success" and the pictures related to the passage (if there are any in the textbook). Ask students to predict what the passage might be about. Guide them to think about questions like "Who might the people in the passage be?", "What hobbies did they have?", "How did they turn their hobbies into careers?" Let students share their predictions in pairs and then invite some pairs to report to the class.
C. While - reading (15 minutes)
Skimming
Ask students to quickly read the passage within 2 - 3 minutes. While reading, they should try to find out the main idea of the passage. After they finish reading, ask them to answer the question: "What is the main idea of this passage?" Invite several students to share their answers. The main idea is that different people turned their hobbies into successful careers through their efforts and certain steps.
Scanning
Present some detailed questions on the PPT, such as "What was Patrick Moore's hobby when he was young?", "What did he do to develop his hobby?", "What career did he finally achieve?"
Let students read the passage again carefully and scan for the specific information to answer these questions. Give them about 5 minutes to read and answer.
Check the answers with the whole class. Ask students to read out the relevant sentences in the passage to support their answers.
In - depth Reading
Divide the passage into several paragraphs. Analyze each paragraph with the students. Explain the important vocabulary, sentence structures, and the meaning of each paragraph.
For example, in the paragraph about Patrick Moore, explain the phrase "used to" in the sentence "He used to go outside with his mother on clear nights and look at the sky." And discuss why he was so interested in astronomy.
After analyzing each paragraph, summarize the key points of each part.
D. Post - reading (10 minutes)
Group Discussion
Divide students into groups of 4 - 5. Give each group a discussion topic: "What qualities do you think are important for turning a hobby into a career? And can you think of any examples in your life or around you?"
Let students discuss in their groups for about 5 minutes. Walk around the classroom to listen to their discussions and offer some guidance if necessary.
Then invite some groups to share their discussion results with the whole class.
Role - play
Set up a scenario: Suppose there is a career fair. One student in the group acts as a career consultant, and the other students act as students who want to turn their hobbies into careers. The "students" should describe their hobbies and ask the "career consultant" for advice on how to achieve their career goals.
Give students a few minutes to prepare. Then let them start the role - play. After each group finishes the role - play, ask other groups to give some comments.
E. Summary and Homework (5 minutes)
Summary
Summarize the key points of this class with the students, including the new vocabulary, important sentence patterns, the main idea of the reading passage, and the results of the discussion.
Emphasize the importance of following one's interests and working hard to achieve career goals.
Homework
Ask students to write a short passage about their own hobbies and how they hope to turn them into careers in the future. They should use at least 5 new words and phrases learned in this class.
Let students search for more information about a person who turned their hobby into a successful career and share it in the next class.
教学反思
After this class, I need to reflect on several aspects. Firstly, in vocabulary teaching, although I used various methods like showing pictures and example sentences, some students still had difficulty remembering the words. Maybe I should add more interactive games in the future, such as word - building games or vocabulary bingo, to make the learning process more engaging. Secondly, during the reading process, some students had trouble understanding long and complex sentences. I should provide more sentence - analysis exercises in class and teach them some skills to break down complex sentences. Thirdly, in the group discussion and role - play activities, some students were a bit shy to speak English. I need to create a more relaxed and supportive atmosphere to encourage them to express themselves bravely. Overall, I will adjust my teaching methods and strategies according to these reflections to improve the teaching effect in the next class.
